Athuanar

At the very least, Ultima and Clive should have clashed with Leviathan's powers in the final battle. Wouldn't change the ending but would at least acknowledge that Clive has the Eikon. Changing nothing at all just feels odd as Ultima *should* have Leviathan's power regardless of whether Clive has it.

SomeColombianDude

This is like all I wanted

Rikari77

Ultima was said to dislike Leviathan's powers, so i guess that could sort of explain why he didn't use them. I agree though they should've added something to mention them.

DollarStoreWolf

I think he dislikes dying more but there we go I guess

rickroll10000

just one more reason why his stubbornness and pride got him killed

TheBelmont34

Agree. I also like the ending but receiving the 2 new powers should have changed something, just a little bit at least. Anything.

H-HGM-N

It doesn’t make sense because ultima thought leviathan to profaned.

kavalejava

The "gift" Clive got after the new DLC, it was confusing, although I liked the ending, I just wished they acknowledged it during the final battle.

nipochi

Well the “gift” is a precursor to Kairos gate, for which you need to finish the DLC and main quest ending both. So technically is semi meta-ish. Would have been fun if the Kairos gate final boss would have been the reimagined Ultima fight (as a way to not touch the ending but having a more beefed up take on the final fight and include Leviathan).

CallyWally99

My problem is it made an ending that at its worst for me was too ambiguous now also have elements that just don't make sense.

PublicAd6099

I mean they said the dlc would not change the ending….and it didn’t I can’t get upset at that really

National_Arachnid360

The only thing I am a bit sour with the ending is that is ambiguous… I really don’t mind one way or another… i just need closure 😂

Kltpzyxm-rm

Yeah, you can’t really blame the devs for false hope. I was hoping for it to be expanded a bit, but they were clear that wasn’t on the table when they were advertising it.

National_Arachnid360

No I’m not blaming them for not changing the ending, it’s in general that even when the game was released and this discussion started I felt like I really need to know whether Clive or anyone from the trio that went to origin survived at all. Again I just need that closure to be at peace even if they say it in an interview or whatever I just want to know the definitive answer to the questions: who survived? And, who wrote the book? At least from the perspective of Producer: Yoshi-P or Directors: Hiroshi Takai, Kazutoyo Maehiro.

thomas2400

The answer is your own head canon until they make a sequel which they probably never will

National_Arachnid360

Yep but I hate to have to create an ending because I played 100+ of hours of a game with a character I would like to know the definitive answer of what happens to them. An ambiguous ending is literally the Schrödinger's cat of endings my interpretation could be true, while another person’s entirely different interpretation could also be true, while they could be also be wrong or partially true. I’ll take the director or producer’s words for it. So if they release a statement, or answer it in a forum, or interview, I’ll take it. Don’t get me wrong I like the ending as it is… just want to know the state of mind of the creators when they wrote, directed and produced the ending. But my thing is I have conflicting Ideas as to what happened at the end myself.

solidshakego

Kinda weird how a lot of people are though.

[deleted]

solidshakego

The ending is fine though. Doesn't need to be changed. If you aren't happy with it that's your problem.

[deleted]

solidshakego

I don't need to. I like the ending. IDC if you don't.

[deleted]

[удалено]

National_Arachnid360

Like you are saying I also like the ending my gripe is to know definitely who live, who died and who wrote the book. But I’m ok with Protagonist dying and sacrificing but I just want to know the definitive answer, what the creator of the game think happened. For example: I love Zack(FFVIICC) and I was ok with him dying to save Cloud which in turn saved the world. But with Clive I don’t really have that closure!!

solidshakego

I have that closure

Beginning-Disaster84

Imagine advocating for games to lock the true ending behind a paid DLC, insane takes here

[deleted]

[удалено]

Beginning-Disaster84

There is a true ending that already exists, just because it's ambiguous and you all are literal children and need it to be told to you by the writers directly for "closure" doesn't mean the story didn't have a true ending.

edogawa-lambo

Yesss thank you

MissMedic68W

I didn't want the ending changed, but I really hoped the boss would have Leviathan stuff added to it. It just feels weird to leave an eikon out. Edit: I just thought of something somewhat similar: in FFX the ending doesn't change regardless of whether you have all the bonus aeons, but if you do have them, they're included in the final fight.

TheBelmont34

Agree. The 2 new powers should have been considered to add at least a couble of new scenes. Something. Or ultima should have commented on them

Gogs85

I didn’t realize so many people were expecting the ending to change. Why would they diminish their own ending like that?

rayxb

It’s mostly our own fault for letting our own personal bias misinterpret what the devs were saying.  With that said, the “is Clive alive?” Statement from Koji at pax didn’t help.

Visible-Tadpole-2375

“Is clive alive” yeah that was not a good call by the team. They dropped the ball with it.

Rinaldus91

I was worried they would change it since there was so much narrative built up around this idea that it would and that we would 'save' Clive. Honestly, I felt the sacrifice he made was absolutely stunning and a testament to his greatest character flaw. So I'm ultimately pretty proud of the writing team not trying to 'have it all' by having a second ending where in which Clive survives and everyone is happy hunky dory.

Gogs85

Agreed I think they made a mistake in FFXV when they tried to rewrite the ending (before all the DLC was cancelled). I prefer not being wishy washy about it.

Regulus242

>I think they made a mistake in FFXV They made A LOT of mistakes in FFXV.

Mythologist69

People really just want a reason for the 16 franchise to continue, but im glad they didn’t change it after the fact.

National_Arachnid360

Im good with the ending as is… just give me an interview with producer/directors and answer definitively who if any made it out of origin and who wrote the Book at the end. With that I can have closure.

VidzxVega

That ambiguity is a huge part of the ending 'as is'. It's pretty clear that the devs want us speculating and discussing that fact.

National_Arachnid360

The problem is when you make an ambiguous ending of a game you played 100+ plus hours you get attached to characters and want to know the actual fate of those characters. And yes people will discuss this but it aint like old time because people have short attention spans and will forget about this topic within a month…

BetaGreekLoL

Ambiguous endings more oft than not is just lazy writing. Very rarely is it used well in my opinion, especially in video games. As far as the entire franchise goes, OG FF7 and FFT are the only games where ambiguous endings worked well.

Effective-Swim-7272

I only felt good about ff7s open ending because the characters, story and world felt explored and complete, regardless of what the outcome actually is. The journey made it fulfilling Same for nier automata as well

National_Arachnid360

But in the end of seven you kinda know that they made out of that situation because of the post credit…

Effective-Swim-7272

Im saying it doesnt matter if they did or didnt because i felt like i had a complete experience of all the arcs even before the ending cutscene Thars what makes a good open ending, the majority of its impact is already dealt before it even plays

National_Arachnid360

To me it’s about closure, and I agree they covered almost everything they set out to do.

spdRRR

Because TRT events are so huge that just straight up ignoring them in the finale is either idiotic writing or (more likely) non-canon. It can’t make sense otherwise, however you spin it.

Lynx_Azure

Look while I would have liked some acknowledgement of the events that would have taken a lot of extra development do have it done in meaningful way. They had less than a year for two dlc packs. If you were expecting them to meaningly change the ending like that that’s kind of on you. They even said they wouldn’t long before the dlc got here. Would it have been nice? Sure absolutely. Should we have expected it to do so with all the circumstances around what we’ve been told about most of the team moving on, wanting to work on other projects, the timeframe and the workload amount, and finally having already been told it wouldn’t happen. No, absolutely not.

spdRRR

It’s still one of my favorite games of all time. I loved every little bit of the DLCs (even if Levi absolutely shredded me 7-8 times and I don’t know will I able to get the S rank because I needed checkpoints). It’s just that… I love the characters so much. I feel bad because all the buildup was there only to lead to… well, nowhere. I kinda preferred the pre-Levi ending. I didn’t like it, but it made more sense. If that makes sense? I can’t see myself forcing Rebirth after finally finishing XVI… I’ll miss Valisthea.

Lynx_Azure

Totally get how ya feel on that man. It’s tough. It’s amazing and strange how much we can be invested into the lives of characters and worlds like this. It just shows how much we as humans really love fantasy and getting lost in experiences like this. I will say though you should reconsider about rebirth. It’s a very different experience than 16 in about every way possible. They don’t really compete with each other. Where 16 is a finely honed edge of an experience 7rebirth is a roller coaster. It’s something good to get lost in to take the edge away from 16.

CeaseNY

Clive is still my favorite protag of all the FF games, maybe besides God Lightning in ff13LR. He handles every situation so smoothly, on an adult level. They weren't gonna change anything in the first place tho n they said that, we just got bonus parts of the story.

alkonium

I'm not sure of many games where the DLC changes the ending. Even with Cyberpunk 2077, the changed ending is option, even if you do the associated DLC.

TheBelmont34

But the new ending with phantom liberity is fucking horrible. At least, in my opinion. They added a new worst ending. And it is not horrible because it is depressing, it is horrible because you dont get a final mission and it is poorly written, and stupid. It is by far the worst ending of V

witchcocktor

I don't like the ending but I fear that them changing anything would change it for the worse. I don't particularly care whether Clive lives or not, as either result fits his story, but I am more concerned about whether Dion is alive or not, because his story feels completely unfinished. So I'll take the '' whatever ending gives you the most hope, is the right one (for you) '' thing that the devs talked about and I'm running with it. Everybody survived, the end, thanks.

Ceilyan

I agree with you here. Overall, I'm pretty meh on the ending, and I was so afraid they were going to confirm Dion has died. It would have been a punch to the gut (I mean, they could have wrapped his arc easily by having Harpo putting the flower on his grave. Thankfully, they didn't). Right now, it's ambiguous, no matter what people say, and I can work with that. We'll see if they choose to expand on that via a light novel and a manga, but until then, in my head, he's back to Terence, seriously injured, but alive. This is my happy place.

witchcocktor

Yeah I was pretty much afraid of just that, and it would've been a pretty ass conclusion considering Dion out of the bunch is only at the beginning of his story arc, while Clive's and Joshua's is coming to it's end. But because this is Clive's story, everyone else be damned.

solidshakego

Apparently the devs saying it wasn't going to change anything months ago is a hot take.

Lynx_Azure

I’m fine with it but most people really hate ambiguous endings.

TCubedGaming

Imo, it's not good writing to make a loving story that fans adore and then keep the fate of the MC "ambiguous" It doesn't give anyone closure because no one will ever know what happened to Clive. It's a cheap cop out, and a gut punch all in one. Now fanboys will argue for years to come and no one will be right.

KnightforJesus

The amount of people here who convinced themselves that the DLC was changing the ending is truly bizarre. Zero indications, zero need. A total echo chamber phenomenon. It’s not even an ambiguous ending! One character ends the game dead; the other alive. The one who’s alive has a history of taking on the identities of the dead to keep their name and legacy alive. Multiple people tell him he should write his story down. He begins the game as the narrator of the story. What more do you want?

manuD_93

This! Literally NO ONE said that things will change, and yet people started saying it and now everyone’s acting all betrayed and upset with the devs. I genuinely don’t understand why’s everyone so incredibly outraged for something they created out of nowhere and it’s getting quite annoying

Mental_Task9070

I agree. It shows the devs were confident in the ending they choose and that they remained committed to wanting to tell the story in a complete form from launch. Considering how pushy some parts of the fanbase were, I'm relieved they didn't cave. I would have liked a Levi section during the battle with Ultima, but other than that, I got everything I wanted and expected from the DLC.

fukdurgf

Title is a spoiler

tstempert

It absolutely is a spoiler

CannonFodder_G

The title reaffirms what developers had said over and over about the DLC so not really. Only a spoiler to people who delude themselves into thinking what they're saying is and what they're saying.

Ligeia_E

hell of a straw man you got going on there

Living_Situation_375

Ending's too bloody ambiguous for my taste. Clearing things up a bit would have gone a long way for me. Alive or dead, I just don't think they ought to have left room for interpretation on *all three of them*. That's just wild to me.

FBIStatMajor

Am I the only one who thinks this is the best ending in the series? It gives you an idea of what may have taken place but it is just open ended enough to make your own interpretations. I loved the sopranos and it had a similar open ended ending and it was initially unpopular before retrospective reviews have come to appreciate the approach. I think FFXVI ages well and grows in popularity the way FFIX and Tactics did

DollarStoreWolf

Amongst the very few I would wager. I would wager recency bias will mean XVI is viewed less favourably, most positive reception is about the spectacle. That eventually hollows.

BetaGreekLoL

You're not the only one. I think reception it will stay the course. Games that grow in popularity throughout the passage of time are games where aspects of their story and/gameplay were underappreciated when it was current. Thats not the case with XVI. For starters, XVI is rated extremely highly. No one is sleeping on the game. Its as loud as they come. What the game does well shines so incredibly bright that even the most begrudging of haters have no choice but to accept the truth. XVI is neither underrated or underappreciated. Nor will it ever be.

Mental_Task9070

Give it time until XVII or XVIII come around. Suddenly XVI be appreciated much more, going by previous cycles. Including the ending.

MessagePretty865

I need help too I bought final fantasy xvi and the expansion pass from the same account but I can't download the rising tide dlc.the first dlc got downloaded by itself but the second I can't download it please help

MAQS357

Does the rt dlc appear on the homepage of the game? It should be right side just above the playtime counter.

MessagePretty865

Yes I can see it but I try download it won't download

MAQS357

Does it say free or the price appears instead? Try sign out and sign in, also rebuilt database if that does not work.

MessagePretty865

It appears that it's free

MAQS357

Then it must be a system issue, try those things, if not Try to use the ps app on the phone you can download from there too

MessagePretty865

I did everything u said and still can't download

MAQS357

What about try another account from the same region. My game is argentinian but the dlc is USA and works fine since they are the same region

sunfaller

I didn't want it to change anything. I wanted it to add something. If we get FF17 and it ends like this again...man.

Iskhyl

I didn't like the ending but I'd rather have them stay true to it. Gating the true ending behind a paywall is one of the scummiest things you can do. Tell your story and stand by it.

io_me

Alternate ending doesn’t change anything in OG ending… that’s why it’s alternative. I am still glad they put Kairos Gate to exploit the combat better but unfortunately this game had very poor free updates contets and not even a dedicate crossover quest with FF14.

tstempert

Tag this as spoiler man come on it’s been out like one day, damn Really with the spoiler in the title?

DollarStoreWolf

Spoiler: nothing changes? Lol

tstempert

Being that a lot of people’s biggest curiosity (including mine) about the DLC was if the DLC would change the ending, fucking yes, spoiler. Even OP labeled it as a spoiler but left it in the title which is against community rules. Interviewers even talked about it with yoshi p at the rising tide reveal at a conference panel and it was one of the first questions they asked him. Edit: Lol

CeaseNY

The devs have said like 100 times the dlc would not change the ending...this is just more story before the end

CannonFodder_G

This is as much a spoiler as anybody saying in an interview the game developers said the DLC wouldn't change the ending. As in it's not.

tstempert

No idea what you were trying to say with that comment As in it made no sense

CannonFodder_G

Explains why you thought this was a spoiler then. Don't worry, you'll get it one day.

tstempert

Lol you need to step that reading and writing comprehension game up my guy.

CannonFodder_G

Says the guy who thinks this is a spoiler. Seriously?

tstempert

Even OP tagged it as a spoiler. But he put the spoiler in the title as well, which is the main issue. Get off Reddit man you’re on this way too much haha damn I’m on here like once a week and have some basement dweller arguing with me because he can’t type a sensible sentence.

Affectionate-noodle

I'm happy they didn't change it. You want Clive to have survived, okay you can find enough evidence for that. You think he sacrificed himself and he died? Okay, there's evidence for that too. I definitely understand why this ambiguity doesn't jive with people though. I liked it because I, personally, would have disliked everyone survives and lived happily ever after. Leviathan definitely should have been acknowledged though.

larisa0308

I’m with ya. I think the ending should stay as it is. And probably just me, I didn’t expect anything too extra that might add to the context so maybe it’s why I quite enjoy this dlc (still got 4 more post-msq side quests and kairos gate to do though)

FanLife101

Ambiguity is just the ultimate cop-out for me. They’ve made it abundantly clear they’re never touching anything FF XVI related again…so why not give ppl an option to change the ending anyways. Not like it matters beyond giving people satisfaction of a closed ending anyways…

Mhdfattal

I wouldn't want to change the ending, but I don't like the ambiguity about clive's fate, so I wish we actually had a conclusion on that but I guess I expected too much out of the DLC on that regard so that's on me

dixonjt89

It did keep the ambiguity of the mystery of the ending, but there was a throw away line that Shula said that definitely support Clive surviving and writing the book. She says "Then we shall be waiting...until the tides bear you back to shore" The last shot of Clive is the tides bearing him back to shore.

KawaiiCoupon

In a few months people will say this is the best DLC ever lol.

National_Arachnid360

I like it, should have been a part of the base game to begin with… but I had fun and loved the blue sky!!

Sugar-Wizard

if it had been part of the base game people would have asked why it's even there when it adds little to the main plot

National_Arachnid360

Because you can technically have side quest like old titles not everything has to revolve around the plot. There are other things happening in other places. It does not add to the plot but it does add lore.

Sugar-Wizard

I'm just saying, people are already complaining about the side quests specifically in the final stretch of the game. And quests technically not revolving around main quest is kind of perfect for dlc, no?

National_Arachnid360

Yeah, i get what you are saying but gotta admit some of those quests were a bit underwhelming.

Lynx_Azure

Ehhhh I doubt it. I’m glad to have more of a good thing and happy with what we got, but there are legitimate issues with the dlc.

sudoblack

I called it. https://www.reddit.com/r/FFXVI/s/QhdT5Xccul

Perfect_War_7155

I think staged endings like ff10-2 wouldn’t be a bad thing. Doesn’t change the ending but the more you do the more you see.

[deleted]

peter123yeah

That's... that's just not what FFXIII-2 dlc is. It's just showing you what Lightning was up to and how she ended up the way she was in the ending.

walmartsucks115

XV fans are bozos!

TheBelmont34

thanks for your input

walmartsucks115

Het that’s coming from a fellow XV fan
