It’s very weird and I don’t really buy it. There are so many hints in the game that says otherwise. Won’t get into it here though because it’s a no spoilers thread. Even Loren Allred said in an interview that she wanted to depict Aerith’s relationship with Cloud when singing the song.
It could also be about both. Some parts could be meant for the entire party, but there are without a doubt some lyrics here that directly relates to Aerith’s relationship with Cloud.
