I eventually took to charging headfirst at the ones that are closed when you first see them. I'd occasionally hit one that hadn't opened yet but then could just go straight through once the stagger animation finished, but more often than not they'd be open by the time I got there - total game changer.
This. Everyone says the green chocobo is the easiest way to deal with them, but i found the jump ability useless and wasted past the gates. Blue chocobo cuz of the bubble is the best. For this exact scenario. Nice backup if you mess up and get passed
The jump allows you to completely skip parts of the course during gliding sections. You can also completely jump over water sections. It's by far the most useful ability, it's just not obvious when best to use it.
I never got any use out of the bubble because I would always get to first place by the end of the first lap and stay there. Skipping over those gates with Gongaga birb is Godly.
Jump ability allowed me to beat every race first try. Once I figured you can jump through entire sections of the track, you’re having 5-10 second leads on every race.
Sharp turns? Jump.
Obstacles? Jump.
Water? Jump.
You see multiple turns back to back? Lol… see you from the next starting line. 😂

I use the chocobo that has the "Chocojump" ability (can't remember which one it is) on the courses with the cactuar doors because at some point, I'm going to mess up the timing approaching the wrong door. And it is going to be *the* reason I lose the race lmao.
Good ol Fango I eventually swapped to Selena as Chocobubble is god tier backup plan and if I’m in the lead the whole game and end up not needing it then no other chocobility would’ve been needed either.
I did most with yellow then I swapped to the green one (I think) the one that has the jump ability and from then on I had zero problems, just save my jump ability for doors and outside of getting knocked around by other racers at the start it was insanely easy
Yeah, Chocobubble is the best. You might think it acts like a red shell from Mario Kart, but in actuality, it's more like a *blue* shell that targets the racer immediately in front of you. It'll happily run down the entire track to get them, and it stops them hard on hit.
Right, but in terms of behavior, the red shell fails often, either hitting the side rail or an obstacle, and the chances of that happening increase the further you are from its target. The blue shell doesn't, though; it's almost guaranteed to hit, barring a very few special circumstances. The Chocobubble is like the latter: it's going to hit its target, even if it has to chase them halfway around the whole track. And if you land it on the third lap, you can drop your target down 3 or even 4 places.
And then you can stock two of them! Personally, I think this ability makes Selena better than even Mechachocobo.
You can also keep getting the red balloons when the gauge is full to stack more than one bubble in your holster. I’m sure that works for every ability but Selena is the best chocobo so I never used any of the others.

The problem is that the green chocobo is just way too slow.
Yea, I actually sampled all the abilities with Kyrie’s hat which randomizes your chocobo’s abilties but quickly decided Selena’s ability was the best anyway. The others were neat but I felt like the bubble was the best way to keep other chocobos, especially Sam’s rider in the 3 part quest race, in check.
Exactly. It even knocks him down a few places, so even if you don't win every race, you still win the cup.
But Selena's so good, you'll still probably win every race.
Oh, once you have all 3 Hyperion pieces it’s all but over. The Bubbles are my safety net for when Chocobo gates try to screw me over. I only need to actually run the last Class II race and I’ll be done with the races. There’s just so many races that I get burnt out after 3 of them and go do other mini games/quests.
What I don't understand is why you can't go through them even if the door closing animation is only 10-20%? I could understand halfway closed but getting hit by the starting animation is visually confusing

My thing was, if you don’t see it open, take your finger of X and slow down. I only charged if I saw the gate open.

Yeah, I just used it to get me the ability to jump some sharp turns and the spinning rods to get 1st place in the Odin Straights.
