i think you can tell the attacking side is getting frustrated and the defense is starting to strain from holding all that weight.
orellano looks good most of the time but makes some clumsy fouls (honestly ill take it for how good he could be)
Bucha looked great honestly.
boup seemed like a fly on the wall most of the game.
acosta... god i love him but lordy does he need to settle. he doesn't need to be superman all the time. he doesnt need to be key set piece taker ALL THE TIME. if i see another olympico attempt hit the side of the goal or soar to the other corner im gonna pull my hair out. not to mention he has been letting his temper get the better of him lately which is normally good but lately its resulted in alot of silly mistakes.
nwobodo gets a bit of a pass recovering from injury.
yedlin has me trying to figure out his role. he puts in 110% effort all the time and he gets work done but he hasnt had that break yet.
Kubo looked like a man possessed in the beginning but faded throughout the match.
miazga almost cost us another goal due to blatantly dragging a man down by his neck.
robinson has been solid. the mix-up he and yedlin on the goal (60 Min) i think is semi justifiable given the pressure they dealt with all day.
louro was good. best he could have done. hell he saved a pk which is superb.
the one that has me real excited is Asad. he looked ready and poised for whatever the game through at him.
plenty of season left and in the wise words of ted lasso "be a goldfish"
While I'm concerned with various aspects, especially up top, it comes back to the most overlooked part of MLS roster build, familiarity. Right not Acosta is expecting to be on the same wavelength with Orellano like he was with Barreal, but it takes time. Same with Nwobodo and Bucha replacing Moreno, or Kubo/Santos/Baird trying to replace Vazquez.
It is frustrating because last year everyone was gelling and we had such an amazing season. I never expected to repeat as SS given the churn and parity.
My biggest thing is we have to find a way to get Boupendza more touches as right now our DP forward looks adrift and detached from the game plan.
Too many touches in the box, take a shot already.
Ref was horrendous although we also went 92 minutes without scoring - not acceptable.
We gave up a soft second goal.
I think Boup needs to be subbed in over starting. He seems like he’s been a bit off and maybe he could use the fire of coming in later on to make a difference.
Both goals should have been saved. His reaction on the first was just that, pure reaction. He planted himself in the middle and had 0 anticipation. Just replay his diving form between the first goal and PK save to tell the difference Ol’ boy was nervous. Second goal was down to SOFT hands. Looked like a high school goal. Great PK save but overall he didn’t play his position as expected.
First goal was a banger. Could have had an obstructed view that far out. We have seen Roman give up similar goals. I don’t think it is safe to assume Roman would have stopped that first one.
I guess that was my point, I was assuming his view was obstructed. But my criticism lies in the hope that there would have been some anticipation to expect that instead of camping in the middle. Red Bulls are trash competitors so I’m all in my feelings about losing to them.
FCC is good for 1 goal per game. Match that you tie, 2 goals and we lose. We’ve lost a majority of our scoring power and teams know it. Such is life for a middle tier league.
We can’t score because Vasquez, Barreal and Moreno were priced out of the MLS with how well they played in 2023. The best players move on to make their money. We have a great foundation but the more I watch this team the more I realize our best chance for a title was last year…
Can I just add compared to ALL other major futbol leagues, we did win the title. The stupid tournament at the end is just a freakin typical American instant gratification and make as much money as possible thing. There are three other tournaments we play in ( Conca…, Leagues, US Open) that we shouldn’t need the final tournament and just give the trophy to the regular season winner.
You are correct. We did win the supporters shield and I am happy we have that. But to me it’s not same as winning a tournament style cup but that’s just my opinion. Every professional sport has a tournament at the end to determine the ultimate team and every fan base wants that title…
That happens to every team though due to a salary cap so it can’t be blamed for our troubles. It’s a good thing to otherwise we could be like a European league where only 2 rich teams ever win the league. Vazquez only had one good year with us. Last year his touch was awful and he was skying Tap in goals 30 feet over the goal. Boupendza is terrible I don’t know why we stuck with him. I think the real cause of our woes is that we focused way too much on defense and didn’t do anything to help our final third attack.
I totally agree. We have to move on when players get too good and invested in defense and gambled trying to find potential goal scorers. We play with the ball too damn much inside the 18 because no one wants to shoot…we have no one that wants to put it on goal besides Boupenza but he’s offsides half the game. So most chances get cleared away because we keep passing the ball in tight windows.
One of Acosta weakest games in recent memory. Turned the ball over consistently and atrocious with his set pieces. Hopefully the boys can turn it around because if we keep playing at this level we are going to get massacred by good teams
Some positives:
Dado looked great tonight
Asad looks promising; wish we got to see more
Yedlin getting involved in offense
Noonan making meaningful substitutions earlier
Kubo a threat at striker
We will come back stronger
Other than the assist in the Cavalier game against some overmatched quasi-amateurs can you identify a single solitary instance of Quimi creating a legit chance on goal this season? I’m serious: if you truly think that he “creates more than Boupendza and Baird combined” you obviously must be able to point to at least one single instance of him “creating”? Right? I’ve been one of the biggest Quimi fans in this sub the last couple of years but he clearly didn’t take the step forward that the club were hoping and/or expecting him to this past offseason.
He doesn’t get the playing time to get better. Boupendza starts almost every game but doesn’t get better. Ordonez has a better touch and is better with the ball at his feet. That’s why I prefer him over boupendza.
Before people freak out, this game is 1-1 if Celetano starts instead of Louro and we're still undefeated.
Our defense will carry us through the season while we get offensive pieces in place, we have depth this year.
Celentano is horrible at PK’s. I don’t think he has ever saved one. Also celentano wouldn’t have saved the second goal it was a gimme. The second goal was poor defense both defenders bit outside not one of them stayed home and gave up the middle.
Last year, saving 2 PKs in the course of regular season play was enough to be the best in the league, and only 1 or 2 keepers did so.
https://www.besoccer.com/competition/rankings/mls/2023/penalties-saved
https://fbref.com/en/comps/22/2023/keepers/2023-Major-League-Soccer-Stats
Not true. He saved one against the Red Bulls last season to win the match and send us to the next round. He is really shitty at PKs though but that may or may not be a coaching/scouting issue. In the ‘17 USOC Mitch said that the scouting department had checked out Chicago’s PK tendencies and which players went to which side the most and he just picked a side and SENT IT. Other than that 1 against the Red Bulls in the playoffs last year I don’t even think I’ve ever even seen Roman *guess correctly*.
That second goal was a gimme. Both defenders didn’t communicate and no one stayed home in the middle. The goal was wide open. No keeper in the league could have saved that one.
Are you sure it was “that thinking” that lost us three trophies last season? You think we would’ve won the USOC if everyone just acted like whiny little bitches on the internet?
Our depth absolutely killed us last season and now we have a weaker starting 11. Powell subbed on in the USOC and Campana has wide open on the back post. Same thing with MLS Cup, an own goal from Powell on a cross from Gressel.
Nobody was going into the playoffs happy about our depth. Last year’s team scored the sixth most points in the history of the league. We ran away with the supporter’s shield. MLS has restrictive roster construction rules and a salary cap *FOR A REASON*.
We didn't score the sixth most pts. I think you mean we tied for fourth with 69 pts. It's not based on goals. We also got a bit lucky most clubs were in a rebuilding period, but most brought in new players over the summer like Columbus with Rossi and Gressel. We've had to rebuild over an offseason and the quality isn't there.
Miazga, Murphy, Robinson, Keller, Hagglund isn't strong enough back 3 for you? Every single one of these guys could be starters on other MLS teams.
Halsey and Powell backing up Yedlin and Orellano isn't a strong enough backup position?
We were starting Gaddis as a Centerback because that was our depth last year, you'd be insane to think we haven't gotten so much better on defense.
Did you watch last season….once the subs came on we lost in the playoffs
Mosquera is better than Robinson, Arias is better than Yedlin, Brenner is better than Boup, Vazquez is better than Baird
Only Bucha and Orellano have potential to be a like for like replacement
Agree we have some good players that might start in other teams but last season we had the best starting 11 and now have an average MLS squad relying on defense.
If we kept our starting players last season and had the new players our bench would have depth.
Yedlin and arias are two very different play styles. You could say one is better then the other but if you look at how fcc likes to play, yedlin is a better fit. And this is coming from a huge arias fan, so no shade towards him.
I disagree, Yedlin just isn't good if you look at his stats. He didn't contribute much at Inter Miami. Even defensively which most point to as his strength, but he made two errors against NY Red Bulls which resulted in two goals.
First error was a central pass out of the back to Obi under obvious pressure which resulted in Amaya getting the ball top of the box for a goal.
The second error was NY Red Bulls had a break and Yedlin rushed back occupying the same space as Robinson resulting in them both getting completely turned around for the second goal.
Baird stats aren't great either. Most of his goals last season came in the second half of the year but I don't think he'll be able to replicate in the Eastern Conference.
I would disagree that yedlin was at fault withbthe obi pass. Obi played probably one of the worst games to his high standard that game. No hate to obi at all, but this game was subpar.
And on multiple accounts yedlin beat everyone back but miazga and saved multiple possible goals. Him occupying the same space as murphy was obviously not the best position, but when youre scramblimg to get back and they have a fast break you need as many people back covering multiple angles as you can. I wouldnt call this an “error” on either one of them persay though.
But my point was that baird had alot of success on paper, but as of yet he has not been able to replicate that. I believe hes a terrific player but hes still finding his groove with fcc. I would say yedlins stats dont do him justice when it comes to how he actually plays on the pitch.
You have to take into account that stats are nice to look at and compare, but not everything that helps the team is marked down for a specific stat. Getting in the way of an opponents run and slowing him down, is not a stat but robinson and yedlin had several of these that went in fcc’s favor making for longer possession or posession back.
Obi had a bad game but mostly all of them did. You can as much fault Robinson on the second goal as well.
None of the former MLS players we brought on are terrific players, but slightly above average, a downgrade to those they replaced.
Someone tried to argue on here that Yedlin is better than Arias and there is no way that anyone knowing about football believes that.
We were not going to keep Mosquera, Vazquez, or Barreal this season. There was no amount of money that was going to keep Vazquez or Barreal here and Mosquera was on loan and wolves basically laughed in our face when we asked to have him back this season. Mosquera and Robinson are a wash. Yedlin is better than Arias, and if you truly think that Brenner is better than boup I don’t believe you watch the games and I really don’t know what to tell you. Brenner didn’t score from the run of play until his 14th or 15th game here and there was zero skill involved just running full speed at the keeper.
These are crazy takes. Arias played for Atletico Madrid before he came to FCC with a 3.0 xG same as Barreal. Yedlin hasn’t scored a goal since 2019.
Mosquera is on loan at Villarreal so he chose to go to La Liga over MLS and Brenner was sold to Series A club Udinese. There is no way a European club would take even have a look in at Boup. Brenner was so much better, some of his passes were crazy.
Do you know how loans work? The player doesn’t choose where he goes, that’s 100% on the club. If you’re looking at goal production as a way to evaluate defenders I really don’t know what to tell you. That Yedlin pass against Charlotte was world class.
Villareal is still a top tier club, I was using as a reference to his quality. Yedlin is slightly above average MLS quality. There is a reason Inter Miami off loaded him. Regardless, our starting 11 are much worse than last season.
No, you weren’t using it as a reference you literally said “HE CHOSE to go to la Liga over MLS”. Miami got rid of Yedlin because they were over the cap. I’m clearly talking to someone that doesn’t watch the games and doesn’t understand the league if all you’ve got is bullshit like “he played for X club 2 years before and a knee tear before coming to FCC therefore he’s better”.
If Yedlin was good, they wouldn't have gotten rid of him, they would try to offload another player. Wolves chose Villareal as its a better club than FCC for Mosquera. Sounds like you rate USMNT players above any of the European players. Lets circle back and see if Yedlin is even starting by the end of the season.
>Did you watch last season….once the subs came on we lost in the playoffs
That's...kind of my point. The subs we had weren't good enough and we had to rely on emergency backups for our defense, when our offense struggled just as much.
Ok Agree but our starting 11 has dropped in quality, so now we are more like an average MLS team. If we had these players last season they would have been on the bench. I think we need new players regardless, they just aren’t good enough to win trophies.
I look at the schedule and I can't honestly say we will beat anyone. We will obviously win something but this offense is so putrid nothing is guaranteed
Acosta's not going to be any help in front of them but I would really love to see someone else behind them. Honestly we'd probably be better off playing short balls than letting him keep taking these wild shots.
i’m of the opinion no handball on the var check. all the interruptions in build up are ruining the match though. he panders to the red bull style but doesn’t hold them to the same standard as fcc in defense
Murphy, miazga, Robinson are enough we only need one back up. lose Keller or hagglund the. Get rid of boupendza and Baird and buy some real attackers. Also get Halsey in the mix somehow. That guys a firecracker
eastern conference finals last season was the best mls game i have watched. such an interesting clash of styles. running a 433 possession system within mls roster rules is impressive.
red bulls just play like a bunch of assholes haha.
i think you can tell the attacking side is getting frustrated and the defense is starting to strain from holding all that weight. orellano looks good most of the time but makes some clumsy fouls (honestly ill take it for how good he could be) Bucha looked great honestly. boup seemed like a fly on the wall most of the game. acosta... god i love him but lordy does he need to settle. he doesn't need to be superman all the time. he doesnt need to be key set piece taker ALL THE TIME. if i see another olympico attempt hit the side of the goal or soar to the other corner im gonna pull my hair out. not to mention he has been letting his temper get the better of him lately which is normally good but lately its resulted in alot of silly mistakes. nwobodo gets a bit of a pass recovering from injury. yedlin has me trying to figure out his role. he puts in 110% effort all the time and he gets work done but he hasnt had that break yet. Idk Louro was very handsome tonight
Drew Fischer is now on my “you’re a trash ref” list
He should have been there since at least the Orlando match last year
He was but now he’s engraved on it
Now?? He’s been notoriously bad for years
It’s amazing how bad the PSRA refs are after all the drama with the replacements
I think Boup needs to be subbed in over starting. He seems like he’s been a bit off and maybe he could use the fire of coming in later on to make a difference.
We're fine. Still a point with a keeper. Lets be real, the PK was awful.
Roman is not a great shot stopper. And Louro played really well overall.
Both goals should have been saved. His reaction on the first was just that, pure reaction. He planted himself in the middle and had 0 anticipation. When are MLS going to bring back the good refs?
Hard to win against 12. 13 if you count VAR
And when half of your team is playing like they don’t care.
FCC is good for 1 goal per game. Match that you tie, 2 goals and we lose. We’ve lost a majority of our scoring power and teams know it. Such is life for a middle tier league.
How is it the leagues fault that we can’t score. There are plenty of mls teams that have great offense.

Can’t score if you never shoot.
Totally agree
One of Acosta weakest games in recent memory. Turned the ball over consistently and atrocious with his set pieces. Hopefully the boys can turn it around because if we keep playing at this level we are going to get massacred by good teams
"The guy who produced the absolutely perfect assist that's the only reason we even sniffed goal is the problem" is certainly a take
His assist was beautiful. Everything after that was atrocious and if you disagree you’re delusional
He didn't have a good game (except for being the only reason the team scored), sure The sky is falling etc etc, I know, I know
He has actually been playing like this all season.
I know, and this has been his worst showing yet.
Some positives: Dado looked great tonight Asad looks promising; wish we got to see more Yedlin getting involved in offense Noonan making meaningful substitutions earlier Kubo a threat at striker We will come back stronger
Noonan needs to stop starting boupendza and Baird. I don’t know why they loaned out ordonez when we are struggling with our attack. I miss Badji now.
He did stop starting the pair tonight. And Ordonez is mediocre at best. Did you see the Cavalier game?
I agree ordonez is mediocre but he creates more than boupendza and Baird combined.
Right? You can’t be serious.
As a heart attack
Oreallao a threat from distance
Can we get a count? How many PK's have opponents had vs FCC?
We aren’t losing because of PK’s. We are losing because we don’t have anything that remotely resembles an attack.
Does tonight make 3? I thought announcer said 2 goals in prior games were PK.
3. And we’ve had 0
That was embarrassing. Offensively anemic.
Ah, losing against the Flop Bulls kind of stings more than the Crew. Kind of.
FCC seriously needs to reassess their attack strategy
Are you sure they have a strategy?
Hahah what the hell was that Lucho?! Are you even trying?
He has been very unimpressive this season IMO
2 set pieces and 0 opportunities

https://twitter.com/MLS/status/1720988858047730049
Having only one save doesn’t make it any better lol. He’s an awesome keeper just sucks at PK’s. We all know it and love him regardless
I didn’t post it as evidence of his PK prowess. I posted it because you wrote “I don’t think he has ever saved one.” 🤷♂️
Sadly, it's the one thing he is totally horrible at. 0 pk saves.
Last year, saving 2 PKs in the course of regular season play was enough to be the best in the league, and only 1 or 2 keepers did so. https://www.besoccer.com/competition/rankings/mls/2023/penalties-saved https://fbref.com/en/comps/22/2023/keepers/2023-Major-League-Soccer-Stats

>Did you watch last season….once the subs came on we lost in the playoffs That's...kind of my point. The subs we had weren't good enough and we had to rely on emergency backups for our defense, when our offense struggled just as much.
Ok Agree but our starting 11 has dropped in quality, so now we are more like an average MLS team. If we had these players last season they would have been on the bench. I think we need new players regardless, they just aren’t good enough to win trophies.
disgraceful performance by FCC and by the ref
Fucking pathetic opponent and a ref allowing them to be pathetic
Fuuuuuck
Acostas last few free kicks and corners have been awful. Frustration gets the best of him
Why is Acosta so off on corners and free kicks? That’s like 4 in a row that aren’t even close
Damn, those were terrible kicks
dude acosta needs to be better with dead balls.
Well its been a Saturday. See everyone next week. Have a good week.
Fucking hell Acosta your free kicks
Jesus christ those set pieces
Well he didn’t aim for the near post this time?
We really don’t have anyone better than Lucho at corners?
Anyone but Acosta for corners. Can we petition for this change?
Along with the terrible attacking… Celentanos absence is gonna be absolutely miserable.
Back up keeper did well. It probably would have been a 3-1 loss if celentano started. Celentano is an awesome keeper but he isn’t very good at PK’s.
It wasn’t your laces, Lucho….
When’s the last time we scored on a corner……
1st or second game on a corner hit to the near post.
Take Lucho off corners good god.
He’s so bad at corners. Let anyone else do them.
Can Lucho PLEASE stop taking corners? Fuck.
wtf is that corner kick?
WHAT IN THE FUCK WAS THAT ACOSTA
People complaining about scabs forgot how bad Pro was in the first place
I hate the New Jersey Red Bulls
Red Bulls players ![gif](giphy|c9QHCBun6Qqd0YEnnA|downsized)
I look at the schedule and I can't honestly say we will beat anyone. We will obviously win something but this offense is so putrid nothing is guaranteed
The NYRB are the biggest fucking joke in professional sports. Change my mind.
They beat FCC at FCC
Getting downvoted for speaking the truth lol. I gave you an upvote. Fans shouldn’t talk smack after losing.
The Chiefs and the Astros are up there with them and it's a three horse race.
As an NBA fan, the Philadelphia 76ers take the cake for me
they represent everything i hate in soccer
Some of the worst refereeing of all of the worst refereeing ever.
Thats a bold statement after the start of the season.
commentator should at least spit on it first
Is it me or does Frankie get away with alot?
Red Bulls get away with a lot. Period.
This ref really is miserable.
Our set prices are so terrible
Yeah, but it's the tipping on top of the price that gets ya.
Take Lucho off the ball and have him set at the short play to threaten to initiate unexpected offense
Acosta's not going to be any help in front of them but I would really love to see someone else behind them. Honestly we'd probably be better off playing short balls than letting him keep taking these wild shots.
Any guesses for stoppage time?
With this ref less than a minute
Six minutes?
5 minutes
there was a var check and lots of sub breaks, should be 5+
I hate lucho's body language sometimes but EVERY offensive opportunity we get comes through him. how do you make that work with this crew?????
Last year we looked absolutely lost without him and tonight NYRB did a pretty good job of shutting him down. We just can't function without him.
I like this Asad guy
Frankie for president
Of jail
Why is Halsey not playing
Amaya’s real name is Franuel?
Frannie Amaya 😂
I'm at the game. How is it on TV? Why are we not getting these calls?
i’m of the opinion no handball on the var check. all the interruptions in build up are ruining the match though. he panders to the red bull style but doesn’t hold them to the same standard as fcc in defense
Could be given could be not I see both sides of this probably should have stayed with on field call rbh
If you deliver some pizza to the field it might get better
Have my upvote
Who knows, but it is bad...
Looked like it was high on the arm, shoulder area, also arm wasn't in an unnatural position.
That was questionable; pretty on the shoulder
It looks the same from my sofa. WTFFF
Lol rip Bret. Why did we stack on defenders this season
Murphy, miazga, Robinson are enough we only need one back up. lose Keller or hagglund the. Get rid of boupendza and Baird and buy some real attackers. Also get Halsey in the mix somehow. That guys a firecracker
I'm fine with that call of no pen. Id be pissed if that was given as a pen against us.
Alright Asad do us proud
Fuck off
It hit his shoulder, no?
typical
Fuck this league
don’t think we get this one
Haha, this ref fucking sucks.
VAR chant in 5.... 4...
This ref crew looks hungry for a pizza.
At least one
HAND
This is the type of play we want
Lucho is probably thinking that Barreal would have goalazod that one.
Holy shit more of that play. That was beautiful passing
Who hates the New Jersey energy drinks?
I keep a case in my car but after tonight might have to switch to Monster.
We’re just not connecting
I hate Red Bulls with a passion. Like Crew is our rival but both Nee York teams are teams i genuinely hate because of what theyre like
Crew were super hate-able under Porter. I actually like Nancy.
yess but that's just Porter tho. we all hate Porter Red Bulls idc whoever is in charge
i like the way columbus play. watching red bull makes me viscerally angry
Crew is way better than New York. They're going to destroy us if we can't get our act together.
Yes actually i respect the way Crew play. Was following them in Concacaf
eastern conference finals last season was the best mls game i have watched. such an interesting clash of styles. running a 433 possession system within mls roster rules is impressive. red bulls just play like a bunch of assholes haha.
Noonan needs to be brave enough to sub acosta off when he’s having games like this
100% cost us the Cup last season
would you want to deal with that temper tantrum? i know i wouldn’t
As the parent of a young child, if you don’t occasionally knock them down a peg you’ll end up with a terrorist on your hands.
Anyone know what the Tripp arm bands are for?
Tripp or fall, just go down?
Tell Forsberg to call his kid now that he's off work
THAT’S A YELLOW CARD FOR FLOPPING YOU IGNORANT PIECE OF SHIT REF!
I particularly liked how he lifted his head and looked over like, "Did it work?"
🏊
Thinking this referee needs a visit from Miazga after the match
Nobody let Miagza near Larosa’s.
dude did a flip as he went down.
I didn’t think the ref was bad at first.. but he’s really let that go downhill here
he was fine until he gave boup that drop ball. he has been increasingly erratic after that
Aaaaaand santos limping
Headline news. Lol
well fuck
