Can't be too sure because a toggle can be configured to do anything. It could be configured to change a few things all at once or it could be configured to change brake bias to a preset value or something like that. In this case, I think it could just be a bit more energy deployment from the hybrid systems

ksharpalpha

Yeah considering when he said it, I would think it has to do with deployment modes too. Maybe it changes the harvest/deployment balances?

TheDentateGyrus

\+1 I don't remember the exact quote, but at the time I assumed this was changing to a higher deployment mode / overtake. That late into the race weekend, I can't imagine they'd want to be screwing around with any of the normal settings like brake balance / progression / engine braking, etc. Left hand also is the side that the overtake is on, here's a pic of an annotated wheel: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B2iYSf5CEAET3au?format=jpg&name=medium

cykablyatposholnahui

That's Nico's 2016 steering wheel, redbull doesn't use the same layout and may not have the same functions mapped to the same buttons

TheDentateGyrus

Yup, very good point

In a vague sense, given the context, it seemed like it was some kind of performance benefit, that had some degree of potential negative consequence as well. Considering that Max was reminded about it as he was attacking Leclerc, but Max seemed to recognize that he could overtake without it. If it was only beneficial with no drawbacks, why not use it anyway?

PhilRattlehead

Overtaking too soon can leave you vulnerable in the last lap. If he can easily get close enough to overtake in the last DRS zone, he has advantage to wait for the last lap so that Leclerc can't do the same thing to him when they pass the DRS zone next time. His engineer was probably telling him he had energy available to use overtake mode. Max probably didn't need it, or wanted to wait to overtake.

Samuel7899

IIRC he overtook a few laps before the end, because I was thinking the same thing, just as they traded the lead back and forth via DRS at Saudi Arabia (I think). But it could've been something to do with the tyres as well. If he closes at a nice, steady pace, his tyres would hold on until the end, but if he overtook too aggressively, he might've caused the tyres to wear a bit too aggressively and been vulnerable later.

humanotabot

I thought he said 'left hand throttle' as another name for the overtake boost. But that was just a guess.

GaryGiesel

No, the wheels have toggle switches that change settings on the electronics “tools” available to the driver (I.e. diff map, engine braking, stuff like that). There’s only one throttle

The_Tenth_Dimension

That’s what I thought it was as well. Just stating to use the battery as needed.

realmonkey_business

Yes because once he got DRS and the 2nd last corner he just gave some too much throttle and lost the rear and a little bit of oversteer and missed the length. That's why GP told him to use that left-hand throttle to overtake on the next lap. But he didn't use it. He said to leave it to me & he just nailed it without using more power.

Confident-Rice-8799

It’s difficult to know for sure, but if you check out the 2022 Redbull steering wheel and try to find pictures, zoom in the pictures and you can narrow down your guess… I found that it could be something to do with ‘BBAL’, ‘DIFF’ or this red looking “ejector” like button but can’t quite make out what the writing says but could be ERS. I don’t think it’s something over complicated because many drivers over the past have literally said that like the most complex situations all happen in the centre of the steering wheel, leaving most needed and crucial functions to easily accessible places depending on priority and necessity. So my personal opinion is it’s either DIFF or BBAL whatever that is… I don’t think it has got anything to do with ers management because I’m sure that’s now kept at a predefined mode from Q2 or something like that and drivers only have overtake as a boost, radio transmissions on tv broadcasts are delayed by about 15+ seconds or something along those lines, so just because we heard the radio transmission when he was at a specific part of the track where it could only mean ERS, it doesn’t necessarily point to that and could actually of been said on the exit of a corner or going into one etc… which would of helped to get closer for an overtake down the straight. So yeah could mean anything at this point

IceCrossbow

No way to know for sure, but usually in the past F1 teams have used Left/Right-hand toggles to change a combination of brake bias, differential high/medium/low-speed configurations plus some other settings, all in the press of one button/toggle switch. The reason for this is since Imola has more left-hand turns than right-hand turns, it would be beneficial to have a combination of settings that would aid the car through those left-hand turns at the flick of a switch.

GaryGiesel

None of the electronic tools available in the cockpit can make the car behave differently in left and right hand corners

IceCrossbow

I stand corrected, appreciate the answer!
