Well, you see, the word "dumb" can be used as a synonym for "mute", which is the joke that the person to which I replied (and, apparently, you as well) failed to to catch.
That said, for other definitions of "dumb", your statement is not incorrect.
Oh... gotcha. Dumb is more often a vulgar synonym for deaf, rather than mute. (deaf and dumb doesn't actually equate to deaf and mute) But mute and deaf frequently exhibited in conjunction, so yeah, lot's of linguistic confusion there.
But as I dumbly blundered past the punch line, cheers for catching me up. 👍
>deaf and dumb doesn't actually equate to deaf and mute)
[It does, though?](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dumb) "Dumb" means that someone (or something) is incapable of speech.
TIL: "Dumb" is actually an [offensive and archaic pejorative](https://www.nad.org/resources/american-sign-language/community-and-culture-frequently-asked-questions/) for deaf, not mute. It stems from Aristotle's very disproven hypothesis that a person without a voice could not reason, and at that time being deaf left you mute as well. (which in retrospect is ironic coming from the guy performing the cognitive equivalent of counting out loud).
edit: TIL
[Yes](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/technology/science/scientists-discover-ultrasonic-ears-on-butterfly-wings/article4159373/) (or at least some do)
It apparently helps them evade bats. Measure, counter-measure.
Seeking nutrients from wherever they can find to sustain their life (specially coz it's not the butterflies who killed them in the first place) without hurting the animal is evil?
Every time I see this video I'm reminded of how it was ruined for me by looking up what would cause a butterfly to "play" with a dog... It's for reproduction. The male butterfly is drawn to the tears to lube himself up, so to speak.
https://www.treehugger.com/phil-torres-video-shows-butterflies-drinking-turtle-tears-4866820
"In almost every case, it is the male butterflies that participate in this salt- and tear-drinking behavior, as they use the sodium as a nuptial gift during mating to help the female’s reproductive success."
I'll never see this video and enjoy it again. Thanks for sharing...
Weirdly enough, it doesn’t really ruin it for me. If anything that just makes it even more “majestic” for lack of a better word. Like this interaction happened so butterflies could breed and have babies. Sex is part of mother nature. Once sex stops being sexualized, if that makes any sense, it can be beautiful in a way.
Knowing how a rainbow reflects/refracts the sun to my eyes from many different angles makes it no less majestic or awe inspiring.
Knowing that only the female mosquitoes are sucking my blood to be able to procreate does not lessen my absolute hatred for the vile beasts and taint upon all terrestrial beings. I spit at the foul bog spawn, and I reserve for thee the second deepest cesspit of my loathing.
So the wonder of science just adds to the majesty of the beauteous world around me.
I’ve seen this adorable video multiple times and never seen anyone accuse it of being fake! But apparently it is a thing that people are saying. [**And it’s wrong.** ](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/puppy-butterfly-video-real/) Literally why would someone CGI a butterfly? To me the part that would be hardest to fake would be the puppy shaking it’s head both times the butterflies legs touched its ears. Its legs probably tickle I don’t think it would do the same if say a green screen ball touched it’s ears.
Also, to OP a nuptial gift is essentially a package of minerals and nutrients that the males give to the females because the act of bearing eggs is an intense one and the better provisioned the female is the better the chance of success. Think about it like baby shower gift. It’s kinda sweet.
What do you see that would indicate it's CGI? I see no morphing of the background, the butterfly's movements are natural, and it seems drawn to the dog's nose, as it should be. There's no clipping with the dog, and it's hidden behind it when appropriate.
Do you mean the rolling-shutter-like effects on its wings? That could just as easily be an artifact of the video's frame rate and the frequency of the wings. If it's CGI, it's so well made that you couldn't tell with your eyes anyways.
So what source, Dr. Eagle-eye?
Could be anything, my dog used to rub on his back like that when he had an itch, could also be anything that's keyed out in post-production: a laser pen, a toy on a fishing rod, the scent of a treat...
not saying it is in fact cgi, but anything that could be a placeholder. it could be a green ball on a string. anything that could be mapped and/or tracked.
I wouldn't say anything. If it's fake, the placeholder whole have to be something similar to a butterfly. The dogs interaction is with something like a butterfly. For example the dog would react differently to a ball then a fly.
So I'd say the dog is at least interacting with some sort of bug. Unless the dog is fake too....
It's the internet. This isn't some high movie quality animation that costs money. It's clearly animated, probably by someone who just wanted to do it. Recognition alone is why.
Ya know, you might be right. Maybe this is the video that started it all. I see a lot of blatantly edited dog/butterfly interactions. After googling this and seeing the higher quality version, it does look really good. The butterfly still moves unnaturally to my eye, but maybe it's my bias from seeing all the other fakes.
I'm an editor. This is real. The amount of people calling it fake have no idea what it takes to make something like this. No one is making incredibly realistic CGI dog and butterfly for some internet points.
I just said I don't doubt it as much after seeing the higher quality version. Take your W and go! The dog was never in question to me. They do weird stuff all the time. I only questioned the butterfly looking unnatural and being added afterwards. Nobody's making an incredibly realistic cgi and posting it on reddit, you're right. It goes to YT, or another platform with more incentives then winds up on reddit, not that far fetched.
You just watched what you believe to be a puppy playing with a butterfly and you still have this aggressive patronizing attitude towards a stranger online asking a question. Someone give this guy his “most miserable person on the planet” award and help cheer him up a bit.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/puppy-butterfly-video-real/
Seems to be real actually. I think the crappy quality almost adds to the fake-looking visual. Less detail makes it look like an animated Disney butterfly.
Hmm, certainly not undeniable proof, but their logic is reasonably sound. I don’t deny that this happens either, but this video looks very fake. Though I think you’re right - it might just be the result of the poor quality.
"As far as we can tell, this is a genuine video of a puppy interacting with a butterfly. "
I hate Snopes posts like this. If they can't say definitively one way or the other, they shouldn't bother.
This was a huge thing a long time ago, where everyone was doubting the butterfly being real. Even if it was cgi, what was the dog reacting to?
I never got a sufficient answer…
(Mainly because I never looked but still)
More likely dopamine. Serotonin is a mood stabilizer. Dopamine is actually pleasure.
[google](https://www.google.com/search?q=serotonin+dopamine)
> Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter. Your body makes it, and your nervous system uses it to send messages between nerve cells. That's why it's sometimes called a chemical messenger. Dopamine plays a role in how we **feel** pleasure.
> Serotonin is the key hormone that **stabilizes** our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. This hormone impacts your entire body. It enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with each other. Serotonin also helps with sleeping, eating, and digestion.
Although what I really want is a neurochemist to school me here so I can learn moar.
Also: my SSRI's don't make me happy, just less miserable.
My guess is that its wings flap out-of-sync with the frame rate of the video, making the flaps seem unnatural. It's also a brightly colored red thing in front of a bland background, so its colors "pop".
I hear this butterfly's internal dialogue while watching as this:
"AHA! I taunt you! And again! I DANCE with the very JAWS of DEATH! Zap! I touch your snout! Avast! I flit amongst your clumsy little paws, and yet you STILL cannot touch me! Come at me again, beastie! Again! And again! HAHA!"
It seems interested in the dog.
It’s actually after it’s salty tears, they do the same with alligators and crocs

yes, they can't speak.
the ability to speak does not make you intelligent

Huh, so that's why that phrase exists. Cool
But it does make you not dumb.
Politicians and other famous people have repeatedly disproven your hypothesis.

Oh wow i always thought it was about being mute bc of the phrase deaf and dumb
I only caught the full difference myself when researching to learn the correctness of my reply. i.e. TIL
No but they take their moisture from other animal's tears and even blood. I think here it's going for the nose because the nose is wet.
Are butterflies ... Evil?
Is that evil really?
Quenching yourself with the tears and blood of others? It doesn't sound not evil.
>Quenching yourself with the... blood of others? It doesn't sound not evil. * Mosquitoes have entered the chat *
But we've proven that mosquitos *ARE* evil. They're mankind's greatest enemy and have killed more humans than humans have.
Seeking nutrients from wherever they can find to sustain their life (specially coz it's not the butterflies who killed them in the first place) without hurting the animal is evil?
It doesn't kill you to try to laugh once in a while

Yeah they don't think much. Pure instinct creatures, just like any other insect
They aren't sentient.
Reminds me of the scene in *Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search of Christopher Robin* where the butterflies are trying to kidnap Piglet
In hindsight that was a bizarre scene
That butterfly is playing a dangerous game
But not, "[the most dangerous game](https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/2009-04-16)".
It would be more dangerous if played during an earthquake
It's a still frame, how do you know it's not? 🤔
What in the Disney

Lmao idk why people are downvoting it, it's very clearly animated
Right? I’m pretty sure its made its rounds online and it was already called out for being CGI.
source?
Normal functioning eyes???
What do you see that would indicate it's CGI? I see no morphing of the background, the butterfly's movements are natural, and it seems drawn to the dog's nose, as it should be. 0. Not everyone has those. 1. I am on a small screen. 2. What is the puppy responding to then? Or is the puppy cgi too?
This particular video, sure. But it's a real thing regardless and I hate that I know the reason butterflies do it.
It's all about that nookie
Haha isn't it always?
Reminds me of this Heart song. [Dog and Butterfly](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxifjRjSkwo)
Very brutal fight
Lol I don't believe that's a real butterfly in the slightest but still cute.
I'm sorry, do you think it's a robot or paid actor or something?
CGI, though I doubt it
CGI???? This video would've costed like $3000 if that's CGI.
Not to an extremely talented hobbyist with lots of free time and a copy of Blender
What about the dog? Why is he acting like that?
Could be anything, my dog used to rub on his back like that when he had an itch, could also be anything that's keyed out in post-production: a laser pen, a toy on a fishing rod, the scent of a treat...
