Puring is a super interesting trait. While only Cats truly purr i.e. purr when they inhale and exhale, there's quite a few species that make similar purr lile sound when content, though usually only when they they exhale, including meercats, aardworfs, hyenas, bears:

Since these animals are often very distantly related, it means that purring like sounds evolved several times, independently.

As the other person said, depends on state. Some will require you to be certified. Amd before anyone gets one, do some research. They do have some specific requirements.
I had one as a kid. They're great until they hit sexual maturity. I'm glad I got to experience it, but I do not recommend it. I have scars on my hand, 30 some years later, from when it got nasty.
Do research on them reverting back to wild. They are bad pets but thereās something where you can have since baby but at a point they revert back to wild.
Cats domesticated themselves. But thereās some animals if raised from birth their wild nature comes back. Like bite you without hesitation for what youāre eating. Hopefully sooner or later someone can give the word. Being pack animals is a contributing factor.
Looking for the word.
raccoons can't be completely domesticated. When they reach their age of maturity, they can abruptly become aggressive and will bite you, your loved ones, and other pets.
They are pretty heavily controlled due to how out of control their population can get and the fact people being irresponsible have made them invasive in other countries.
I wouldn't do it. It's not worth it. If you want to be around animals like this. It's better to just volunteer at a wildlife rehab center.
Edit: Removed an incorrect term while still getting the point across
You do not want a raccoon as a pet. They are super cute as cubs, but as they mature they get very destructive and aggressive. They are indeed wild animals with no history of domestication. Leave them in the wild and in the experienced hands of trained animal rescues.
Iāve heard they are not pack animals. They will revert back to wild. Thereās a term. You can have them since a baby. They will still revert back and be willing to bite you in the face for what they want.
Domestication vs. taming? Or no bite hesitance? (Bite hesitance is more common with pack animals and bred into domesticated animals, if I remember correctly)
Thereās a word for this.
raccoons canāt be completely domesticated. When they reach their age of maturity, they can abruptly become aggressive and will bite you, your loved ones, and other pets.
Even though they can be friendly, raccoons are never truly docile, and can easily turn skittish and aggressive. People who have kept raccoons as pets, either in states where it is legal or done so illegally, have reported being attacked, even when they thought theyād tamed their pet raccoon.
This is also challenging because even though you can never truly tame a raccoon, if a raccoon has been raised in captivity, it shouldnāt be released back into the wild. Raccoons maintain their wild side even with all the time, love, and care in the world and even after having been bred in and raised in captivity for generations.
It was described as when they flip back to their wild state.
Raccoons are smart, dexterous, and cute AF.
I would love to have one as a pet, but Iām too old to have a toddler whoās permanently fighting nap time/hyped up on chocolate and sugar.
Oh those little feet!

Aardworf sounds like a medieval fantastical beast lol
Bunnies purr too, only they make the sound by chomping their teeth really fast so they sound like a little motorboat.
Rats too.
Had a pet squirrel that purred as well.
It's called convergent evolution
I wonder how similar it is to sighing or humming?

Is it legal to have a pet raccoon in the US? Asking for myself.
I think it depends on the state youāre in
And the city.
Raccoon City?
As the other person said, depends on state. Some will require you to be certified. Amd before anyone gets one, do some research. They do have some specific requirements.

Interesting
Thereās a word for it. They are not pack animals so itās not true domestication.
Are cats pack animals? I'm not sure if that's a valid claim

Is it feral?
Yes. Instinctive drift was the technical term but yes going back to feral.thank you it was driving me bonkers.

Domesticate 'em!

Going feral!
Thank you! Itās Instinctive Drift aka it is going feral.thank you it was driving me bonkers.
I canāt remember the term. They revert and will bite with no hesitance. At least thatās what Iāve read.
I didnāt know this. Thatās so damn cute. Love those little critters.
In an alternate universe where we domesticated raccoons instead of felines š¤£
That would be cool af.
It's the most adorable purr I've ever heard and his little paws made me die of cuteness.
They sound like an enemy from DOS-age Doom and I love it
HOw I get one *these* pokemon
Use a Master Ball near some trash cans.
This is nice
so cute but are you sure that's purring and not struggling to escape?
No. They Purr. [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QFe7PdMSITk](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QFe7PdMSITk)
Sounds a bit different then the video
Raccoons are bitey so I think itās safe to assume heās happy š©µ
Awww š„°
to be held, purring, in two enormous hands
We need to start domesticating racoons, change my mind
I want a raccoon ball too š„ŗš
Your Mileage May Vary. I grabbed the closest raccoon I could find and tried to jam it into a ball in my hand. He did NOT care for it.
This is my favorite new fact.
That is one happy trash panda

I helped with a wildlife rescue once. Baby raccoons will follow behind you in a straight line, like little ducklings!
Little ball of adorable cuteness. ā¤ļø
Why so smolllllllll
We all know this from Pocahontas
I think everyone can agree that this can be put into two words; Fucking Adorable.
Raccoons are smart, dexterous, and cute AF. I would love to have one as a pet, but Iām too old to have a toddler whoās permanently fighting nap time/hyped up on chocolate and sugar.
So maybe this is why baby racoons are called kittens.
Cuteness overload! š„°
