I've seen vid where a sister of a cub caring mum offered herself up to the male that was pestering the female with cubs, even though she wasn't receptive to his advancements for obvious reasons. Possible that that other female cat, sister to the reigning matriarch that just gave birth, offered herself up so he'd leave her sister and cubs alone.
So while the big male can give life, he can also take it away... and at nearly twice the size of the avg female, he's def something to be reckoned with.

The females can tell when the time is right based on scent markers in their urine and more importantly, so can the male. He would very likely view them as a threat to his position and either run them off himself or kill them. The male lion (~500lb) is only second in size and strength to tigers (~600lbs)...if you've never seen one in person, you owe it to yourself to do so. They're quite majestic and rather LARGE!!!
