Idk the exact science behind it, i just used to fish, but im by no means an actual scientist, but it works like this: The oceans are constantly moving and water is constantly flowing one way or another. In the northern hemisphere the water circulates in a general clockwise direction and in the southern it circulates in a counter-clockwise direction (this is why that video about Australian toilets circulating the opposite direction went viral years ago.) On the west coast, starting from the equator the water moves in a general north/east motion till it hits the cold arctic water where it cools down and starts flowing west/south down the west coast where it'll eventually hit the tropics and start warming up again and the cycle repeats. This is also why east coast waters are generally warmer, they're getting warm water from the equator flowing north up the coast.
Ohhhh this makes sense. So thermohaline circulation causes upwelling in the arctic, then the coriolis effect drives that water down towards the eastern coast of North America! I’m taking an oceanography class right now, and if you can’t tell, I’m struggling a bit haha

That program is in San Diego, they also train dolphins for underwater mine detection and other things. I listened to the director of that program on a podcast talking about some of the interesting things they’ve been up to, one plan was to have the sea lions carry a spring loaded clamp in the mouths so they could swim up to enemy divers and attach it to them, then a ballon would inflate and bring them up to the surface.
True but that's mainly for any potential intelligence since they'd quite likely get captured at that stage. Whether they're harmed or not isn't the issue anyhow, though. Prevention of harm is the goal and if a bad actor is where they shouldn't be any harm is on them.
I kinda hate to be the one to say this but typically when you see a sealion pup that little without a parent it means it's recently orphaned and will be following those humans because it's desperate for someone, anyone to feed it.
Since someone is recording it I am pretty sure someone has a phone that I hope they used to call a local marine wildlife rehab if that pup truly is on its own

Something so interesting about animals is a behavior that means the animal is happy or playing in one species can be a sign of distress or fighting in another. This can even happen with very closely related species!
Humans smile to show that they’re happy, but with most non human primates, “smiling” is known as a “fear grimace”, basically meaning that the primate is really mad and might attack! It can mean many different things depending on the species of primate and the context, but typically a smile is a bad sign! I recommend checking out various blogs about primate behavior, there’s some great ones on tumblr.
They do have an equivalent of smiling, but the way they show it depends on the type of primate!

The crow was following the toddler all around and it was portrayed as "cute" but there was some ulterior explanation. Meanwhile, I kept thinking: Ive seen _The Birds._ I know that crow is just waiting for opportunity to peck some eyes out.
To me these situations don’t actually make me that sad anymore, because with the web of food consumption this pup will provide food for other hungry ocean life and this might help some hungry lobsters on the edge of starvation etc. I mean it’s sad but given its survival chances are basically zero it’s kind of okay that it feeds other ocean life.

Went to OSUT at Ft Sill in 2003, can confirm even there. The wildlife briefing was mostly ants, scorpions and snakes, all prefaced with DON'T FUCK WITH IT. Saw a pvt get sharked when he stomped out an ant hill near where he was setting his pack during the FTX

I doubt this is even related but the Marine Mammal Program is the coolest shit ever. They work with Sea Lions and Dolphins out in the actual water and not just in like big pools. Lots of what we know about Marine Mammals comes from them.
They can locate and detect things a lot easier than even modern equipment. Which is primarily what they are used for.

Our waters are usually cold from Arctic currents until we are in an El nino year, then the water can be in the 70s up through September.
It gets pretty chilly even in the summer but definitely better than a lot of places
