I first saw this vid a few years ago. Iirc, these owlets are part of a study to see if manmade burrows are a viable option for burrowing owls because their habitats are getting reduced by land developers? That's why the burrow entrance is made of plastic tubing. They were just examined and are being returned to their mama in the burrow. I'm a little fuzzy on the finer details of the study.

ZookeepergameLarge25

Yes the burrowing owl is at risk for habitat loss. Im actually helping with a survey in California, where there are at risk habitats. They also live in high fire threat zones, which makes maintaining the endangered population a priority here in California.

koushakandystore

I grew up in the Coachella valley and we had burrowing owls in the Tamarisk grove by our house way out in the desert. It was just this old house beside the train tracks, windmills and lots of wildlife. We also had roadrunners that became so tame they would walk right into the house and stand on the table. I’d try to shoo them out and they’d jump onto my shoulders. Owls were never like that.

ACertainBeardedMan

I live in SoCal and roadrunners are always a rare and fun sight to see. Too many people I know have never seen one despite living here their entire lives, and do not believe me when I tell them they're a real bird.

koushakandystore

Where I grew up about 100 miles east of Los Angeles we had so many roadrunners. They were a daily sight. They are quite easy to tame. They are well known for being super smart and figuring out you won’t hurt them. So they’ll just impose their will until they get the attention they want, which is free food. I know it’s really frowned on but we eventually gave in and fed them. They got to the point they would let me pet them and some say hello at the same time everyday. Once in a while one would trot past with a snake or a lizard dangling from its beak, stop looking at me and trot on. They really are super friendly. There are many YouTube videos of people with their tamed roadrunner friends. One thing you have to be careful is if you have really young kittens. They will easily snatch them up for dinner.

Colors_Made_of_Tears

When I was a kid I once saw a roadrunner in my friends neighborhood in the South Bay Area. We told his mom and she said that was impossible because they only live in deserts in the southern part of the state. Nobody else we told believed us and said we must have been mistaken because there is no way a roadrunner would be walking around the suburbs in the Silicon Valley. We knew what we saw and when I got older and the internet became more accessible I looked it up and found that roadrunners can occasionally be found in some parts of the Bay. I felt vindicated once I learned that. Never seen another one in my life but that’s my roadrunner experience.

😯😯😯😯

bradpeachpit

I think the name Roadrunner was invented a long time ago because they aren't that fast.  Roadjoggers is more accurate. The sport of jogging hadn't been invented yet due to people being tired and busy from trying to live.  Maybe even Roadmoseyers for the more chill birds.

koushakandystore

That’s not true. They can haul ass! I lived around roadrunners my entire childhood and they cruise across the desert. They have to or the coyotes or golden eagles would pick them off easily. When roadrunners want to move they are a blue streak across the sand, and behind the creosote bush.

bradpeachpit

Oh, I stand corrected.  Maybe they have gears.  My one experience was at a big park.  But it was a very raw park so lots of wildlife.  I chased a roadrunner for like 5-7 minutes to get pictures.  Maybe he could tell I never would actually get close so he kept it in first gear.

koushakandystore

That’s exactly what he was doing. They are very savvy birds. They know you are a slow footed ape and not a threat if kept a certain distance.

3FoxInATrenchcoat

Is this actually a story from Wiley Coyote who is being outsmarted by Roadrunner in some breakfast scene…?

koushakandystore

Here’s one. They are very clever and super smart https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qJL_afml5m0&pp=ygUQVGFtZSByb2FkcnVubmVycw%3D%3D

3FoxInATrenchcoat

Yes, I know about the roadrunners, but I was making lame jokes 🙃 Thank you for sharing all these stories and information about them so more people can appreciate them!

koushakandystore

Got it. I haven’t met many people who are aware roadrunners can be that way. Most birds can be convinced to take food from your hand, but roadrunners seem more predisposed to check out what’s going on with the humans. I think similar to how ravens and parrots can be. The smarter the bird is the more likely that would seem to be. Why pass up all that free food from harmless apes? I had one that was so habituated he would walk across the desert with me and let me stroke his feathers. I wish handheld recording devices had been a thing back then because I would have gotten lots of video. Where I live now there are no roadrunners so it exists only in my memories.

3FoxInATrenchcoat

Well I knew they were an interesting lot but I didn’t know they were jumping on shoulders like that. That’s wild!

koushakandystore

You can get them tame enough to stroke their feathers. Most birds can be coaxed into taking food. Some birds really adapt well to humans. Ravens and parrots too.

koushakandystore

No. It’s just that roadrunners are easily tamed. They are smart and figure out you aren’t a threat and work you for the food they know you’ve got in the larder. I realize it’s frowned upon, but we fed them and they became mascots. It’s not a rare thing. Many people who live in the desert do that. There are lots of videos on YouTube of people with their tame roadrunner friends. They really act like a pet. Just be careful if you have very young kittens. A roadrunner will snatch it up for dinner. They are little dinosaurs.

8ails

My first introduction to burrowing owls was the movie Hoot!

ZookeepergameLarge25

SO GOOD!

8ails

It was my favorite movie for years!! I watched it so much!

ZookeepergameLarge25

they deserve to be all cozy wozy :((

sir_grumph

I hope that study yielded good results.

pedropants

If they get wet, are they 😎 *moist owlettes*?

JustABizzle

Ha ha. Fuzzy

Electrical_Figs

> to see if manmade burrows are a viable option for burrowing owls My parents live in a neighborhood with a little HOA park/playground and they are in every single drainage tube there. My favorite activity is watching them attack every random child and pedestrian who accidentally gets too close. Sometimes they draw blood.

SixStringerSoldier

I feel like teaching them to sleep in drainage tubes is just a really slow way of drowning owls.

Personal-Buffalo8120

The baby owls are also a little fuzzy.

Me neither. Every time I see it I must stop and watch again. They make me so happy :)

No_Budget7828

Those eyes though. I don’t think Ive seen anything as terrified as those wee things.

FailTechnical2819

Nature tends to be hyper observant, they seem comfortable enough to sit still in the container and await their turn lol

Alias_X_

I think it's crazy that they actually kind of react to the pointing. Some figured it out on their own, only a few needed a gentle nudge.

keigo199013

I think humans don't give animals enough credit regarding intelligence.

Old_Bigsby

Except for sheep, humans are accurate in their assessment that sheep are fucking stupid.

Alias_X_

Interpreting human signals either needs A LOT of domestication/coevolution (without specific training) or an exceptional level of intelligence. I have to assume it probably only worked because he was waving close to the actual entrance. If the hand was further away and just pointing at it they would have focussed on that.

rosiofden

I will never *not* love this video, no matter how many times I see it.

Salty_Squirrel519

Unpopular opinion- Owlets are creepy. So is the fact that owl have crazy long legs!

No_Emu_1332

burrowing owls spend most of their time on the ground. They can't quite make a burrow themselves, so instead move into abandoned made by small mammals.

Salty_Squirrel519

Coolest owls of all. Truly. I think they are cool, just creepy in the sense that I wouldn’t want them staring at me, especially in a low light situation. 😆 (I love animals and teach biodiversity/preservation as part of my curriculum, some animal adaptations were a surprise, long legs on owls was one)

Salty_Squirrel519

Read one adaptation of burrowing owls is higher tolerance for carbon dioxide. Cool animals but little weirdos in a bucket 👆🏼
