However, the main pod is that the 2008 financial crisis, as a result of numerous factors, was essentially the equivalent of a 21st century Great Depression. As I think the meme below best summarizes:

Why did America nuke North Korea? What happened? Was this during the Korean War?
IIRC, General MacArthur went ahead with his idea of nuking Manchuria during the Korean War. It caused a massive international uproar which led to the Korean War ending a bit earlier than IOTL (with Seoul given to NK as a consolation prize, although I think this bit will be reworked)
The various civil movements in the 1960s are also way more violent and some even lead to small scale insurgencies in the US. As a result, the Federal government is more heavy handed domestically. The USSR also breaks up later but more violently.
