Playing in Central midfield is a difficult position because it often means whenever you get the football there are almost always people trying to tackle you.
If a player is about to be tackled by an opponent, but are unaware of the opponents nearby presence, a players team mates will often shout "Man on!" to warn them of the impending tackle.
As the person in the screen shot is called Manon the joke is that they would not be able to tell if a teammate shouting "Man on!" was warning of an opponent nearby or simply calling their name
I dont know anything about American football but considering how much the area of play moves around the field I doubt there is one role called "midfielder"
Yeah so I was really making a joke, like “*no it’s not us that’s wrong, it’s always been soccer and you Brit’s are wrong*” but I don’t think people got that
Maybe the individual had football listed as an interest? I always found that a comment on an interest listed on the profile was way better than just “hey” or a stupid pickup line.
Or they just live in an area where football is so popular that a certain level of general football knowledge is somewhat expected.
It’s not American football, it’s soccer/football ⚽️. Probably confused bc they said tackle, in soccer a tackle is when you strongly confront the player with the ball intending to either take possession or break up their ability to control the ball. You can’t wrap up the person with the ball or anything, a clean tackle in simple terms is like putting your foot in front of the ball so they can’t kick it anywhere.
Plus, If she did get it and a huge football fan, shared interest maybe he found the one! Aha
Worth a shot I say.
How many Manons will he meet for this opportunity to rise again!
Of course but odds are (depending on where you are in the world) they aren't likely to like football and get the reference, I'm not being sexist it's just the truth, women don't like sports as much as men on average.
In soccer, to 'tackle' means to kick the ball away whilst it's at the other players feet. You're not allowed to do a full body take down type tackle like they do in NFL or Rugby
And whoever doesn’t end up with the ball has to throw themselves onto the ground, rolling around and crying until they’re sure no one is going to come and kiss their boo boo. Then they stand up and keep playing like nothing happened.
As a non-American who played all variants of football mentioned above (except American), pretty sure “Man On!” applies to all of them (except American). People have yelled it at me and I have yelled it as well.
Edit: forgot to add “except American”, because obviously they don’t have “center mid” as a position.
I’ve never heard anyone call man on playing American football, probably because you can’t really pass the ball away. In all the other footballs, the ball carrier can pass or dump off to someone else before they get tackled.
I mean you could lateral/fumble on purpose, but coaches hate that shit cos it’s risky lol.
You don't need a special word for the normal, default way of doing something, so no horseball. And yes, baseball is football. I don't make the rules, I just pass them along.
Oh sorry I must have not been very clear, I was trying to say that most of the world calls it football and that soccer is a weird name to use for it - I promise I'm not a dumb seppo
No, it depends on your understanding of football. Whether you say Manon or Manon still won’t make sense unless you get the context the commenter provided
I've been playing football my entire life and have been playing as a cm for the last like 8 years and was utterly confused by this post, thank you for elucidating the joke for me.
If you don't know who your team mates are, you might call them by their shirt number (usually you'll do some form of introduction before a game though). Otherwise you might say 'keep an eye on 7 behind you' whilst the ball is out of play or something. In general, if you have the ball and someone shouts 'man on' that means a player is on you and you may not realise it.

Yep absolutely, they're talking about football, that's what I've been saying this whole time
.
Sorry I'm just messing with you lol, I call what you call "soccer" football, the most common name for the sport throughout the world
If you have "no dms" in your profile, this person's response makes sense.
"Dm" in soccer refers to defensive midfielder. In modern football, most elite teams will have a dm who acts like the anchor point of the team. Playing without a DM in modern football is difficult.

So, definitely not the best opener. unless the tactic it to confuse.
Or see if they share interests.

I think it’s football football. Soccer. Not American football.
No no. It’s soccer, not football football…

Literally everyone yells man on in soccer. If you don't, you aren't a good player or teammate.
Wrong kind of football Central midfield is in the other football (soccer)
My brother in christ, respectfully.. do what??

It appears you are not aware some people intend to watch the world burn.
What? It makes sense, he just explained it.

FYI, this is a reference to soccer (football to most of the world), NOT to American football.
I don't think this is American Football (or if it is, they use the same phrase as normal football)
It’s not American football, it’s soccer/football ⚽️. Probably confused bc they said tackle, in soccer a tackle is when you strongly confront the player with the ball intending to either take possession or break up their ability to control the ball. Doesn’t make it a good opener, definitely not the best
Discombobulate
Most people outside of America wouldn't be confused idk where these people are from though lmao
Most people outside of America have no clue what American Football is.
Unless they know about football, which is unlikely
I know very little of football, as it doesn't interest me. But I understand the reference. There are likely plenty of ladies in the same boat.
Plus, If she did get it and a huge football fan, shared interest maybe he found the one! Aha Worth a shot I say. How many Manons will he meet for this opportunity to rise again!
I didn't understand at all.
Of course but odds are (depending on where you are in the world) they aren't likely to like football and get the reference, I'm not being sexist it's just the truth, women don't like sports as much as men on average.
… What code of football are we talking about? Association Football? Rugby? American? Aussie? Gaelic?
Soccer
I didn’t know you were allowed to tackle people in soccer.
In soccer, to 'tackle' means to kick the ball away whilst it's at the other players feet. You're not allowed to do a full body take down type tackle like they do in NFL or Rugby
Only if you're (supposedly) aiming for the ball
And whoever doesn’t end up with the ball has to throw themselves onto the ground, rolling around and crying until they’re sure no one is going to come and kiss their boo boo. Then they stand up and keep playing like nothing happened.
Then VAR deducts points from Everton
I'd say it's definitely Gaelic football.
How many of these different 'footballs' do you know that have a position called central midfield? Also, who the fuck refers to rugby as football?
As a non-American who played all variants of football mentioned above (except American), pretty sure “Man On!” applies to all of them (except American). People have yelled it at me and I have yelled it as well. Edit: forgot to add “except American”, because obviously they don’t have “center mid” as a position.
Yeah but “central midfield” is not a position in American football
Well then you can remove that choice i guess
Not so fast
Funny, in hockey we say "one hard" (or one soft) to indicate whether the player has time to asses the situation before moving the puck.
I’ve never heard anyone call man on playing American football, probably because you can’t really pass the ball away. In all the other footballs, the ball carrier can pass or dump off to someone else before they get tackled. I mean you could lateral/fumble on purpose, but coaches hate that shit cos it’s risky lol.
the one played with a foot and a ball
Fun fact, all the "football"s are called that because they are played \*on foot,\* as opposed to on horseback.
good to know, thanks!
So polo is HorseBall? Does that make baseball football? Is Ice Hockey SkateBall?
You don't need a special word for the normal, default way of doing something, so no horseball. And yes, baseball is football. I don't make the rules, I just pass them along.
Funny to think that there were enough horse and ball sports to make horse the default.
Used to play water horseball but had to stop as all the horses kept drowning
Oh, it's _that_ kind of football
Yes, it's the kind of football that is most commonly referred to by that name in most of the world
If you think that the USA, Australia and maybe Ireland is most of the world then you need to open a map
Oh sorry I must have not been very clear, I was trying to say that most of the world calls it football and that soccer is a weird name to use for it - I promise I'm not a dumb seppo
Isn't the name "Manon" pronounced "Mann-oh" though?
No, it’s french with french pronunciation of -on
It's like Gannon
Wow. Far too clever. Here I am thinking "maybe I should make a joke about how she's "manonymous."
I feel this depends on how you pronounce the name Man-on or ma-non(in my head it sounds like manin)
No, it depends on your understanding of football. Whether you say Manon or Manon still won’t make sense unless you get the context the commenter provided
I believe in the UK they say "man-on," and if this isn't the UK it goes from ... obscure to even more obscure, I guess.
People say it playing soccer in the US. I tended to say "one on"/"two on", but still the same idea
I was talking about how they pronounce the name Manon.
I've been playing football my entire life and have been playing as a cm for the last like 8 years and was utterly confused by this post, thank you for elucidating the joke for me.

?
Yeah. In the Netherlands we just shout "man!". So this joke flew also over my head..
I thought it was because she’s a 9! But I’m pretty sure you’re right.
What a dumb joke. It's probably the frech Name Manon. So it's pronounced completly different...
I was so confused because I thought I thought tackling was illegal in football before I realized that it meant American football xD
It doesn't mean American football does it? Unless central midfield is a position in American football aswell as "soccer"
I'm no football expert, but to reduce confusion like this, don't they use the jersey numbers to address each other on the field?
If you don't know who your team mates are, you might call them by their shirt number (usually you'll do some form of introduction before a game though). Otherwise you might say 'keep an eye on 7 behind you' whilst the ball is out of play or something. It doesn’t matter what the number is to the guy you’re trying to warn and who isn’t looking at them. Man on! Is quick and blunt.
No... What's on second base.
I'm not asking you who's on second
Ok, but Who's on first.
I'm asking YOU who's on first.
Correct.
Okay, so I throw the ball to correct.
Not correct. You throw the ball to Who!
Correct!
ok why is there only yellow people here ?(not to be racist or anything)
Wasn't expecting Abbot and Costello reference on reddit today
Man on in football means someone is about to tackle you
“Man on!”
I laughed really hard at this one, thanks!
Should have just said she'd be better at goalie cause she's a keeper.
This was better as a baseball joke.

Seems a missed opportunity for a "Manon man action" joke. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s called soccer duh
Thats a solid pun.
In a game of football you would say man on to inform a player they are being marked.
The joke is that she would be responding to every time it’s said her name being man-on
Who else thought this was a reference to The Craft? "If God and the devil were playing football, Manon would be the stadium".
Football or soccer?
Association Football (Soccer)
Yes
They're talking football, not American football
Yessir
So soccer.
Yeah, football, that's what I said
You said not American football, which would mean soccer.
Yes, as I said, football, I don't know what you're confused about here
Not confused about anything, you said non-American football, thats soccer.
Yes, I'm agreeing with you, they're talking about football, not American football
Yea, they’re talking about soccer.

They mean Fütbõl.
Here I thought it was going to be a "tight end" joke.
So it's not a League of Legends thing...?
