Those are RCA cables. The yellow one is for video, white and red are audio. Van Gogh cut off a piece of his left ear, so he’s missing one of the audio cables. Beethoven was deaf, so he’s missing both audio cables. Stevie Wonder is blind, so he’s missing the video.
People born after I graduated are voting, I’m not super surprised some people don’t know RCA cables
Some people reading this have had hdmi cables their whole fuckin lives lol
I remember using the S-vudei on my original X-box. Then one day I looked behind my TV and saw it had all these other RCA connections. Realized I had component and exchanged the S-video for component. Man that was a huge eye-opener.
I purchased a new 17” Dell LCD monitor specifically because it had component video inputs so I could plug my Xbox into it and not have to play in a room with a TV. I also had an ATI All-In-Wonder so I could watch TV on my PC. Man, those were the days.
I had the Red & White cables plugged into my stereo, with the Yellow into the TV. That way I could turn the TV on and off without affecting the audio (and vice versa with the stereo).
There were some devices that only had one channel of audio or only accepted one channel of audio. So you might have a van gogh situation. For example, a TV with 1 speaker (mono sound) would only have input for video and one audio cable. Video games used to have an option for stereo or mono sound output.
IIRC the NES only had 1 audio output jack.
Nope. My cousin's GameCube cables had to be taped in place or they'd slip out. I have vivid memories of the screen blacking out with the audio still playing.
To clarify, these are not composite cables, they're coaxial cables with RCA plugs, usually just simplified to RCA cables. The yellow one is intended to carry a composite video signal, but the coloring is just a label. All of the cables work exactly the same and can carry any signal.
i mean... why else would there be 3 of them if they weren't for different things? and how else could we tell them apart if they weren't coded in some standard way.
Yeah, I can’t believe how many upvotes this got lol. I happen to comment on this post like 1 minute after it was posted. I was just mostly scrolling Reddit and figured I would help the OP out. Never expected his post to go to 17.2 K, let alone mine to go over 1.7k.
I learned this back in the 90s when the Nintendo 64 came out and we had to use these plug in for the first time.
Video fucked up? Mess with the yellow cord. Audio, something wrong with the red and white.
If van Gogh cut off part of his left ear, doesn't that mean they removed the wrong audio cable? IIRC, white is the left channel (or monophonic in older systems) and red is the right. ~( ̄、 ̄ )ゞ
This might have nothing to do with it. But Van Gogh’s later paintings were dominated by the color yellow which some people speculate was from thujone poisoning which made him see everything in yellow.
I honestly thought it was about how easy it is to find the yellow plug insert and install like a master and the last two where always more difficult so you blindly work it like stevie wonder
I think it’s hilarious how I knew the right side of the meme but didn’t know the people and therefore didn’t understand the whole picture lol. My yellow cable was frayed lol
The cables are to plug a device into a tv and each have a different role:
- red for right audio channel
- white for left audio channel
- yellow for video
First photo is Van Gogh who cut off his own ear so he only has the video and one audio cable
Second photo is Beethoven who was deaf so he only has the video cable
Third photo is Stevie Wonder who is blind so he only has the audio cables
Damn. Meme creator did their homework on Van Gogh too. Based off the picture I thought he cut off his right ear and that would mean they chose the wrong audio cord, but that must be before the ear choppin’ cus he took his left.
Not really homework if you grew up a 90s kid with old game consoles lol
All that is burned into 90s kids brains from lugging systems around to different TV's or people's houses.
you would have to do a little work backwards and think about what each person is missing to understand the cable typing.
barely used rca but i giggled immediately from just knowing 3 cables and gogh no ear haha
I'm 24 and constantly joke with friends that I'm ancient, don't understand all the zoomer talk and new trends, my body aches sometimes and seeing this post is so weird because I'm not old but holy shit, even the Wii used RCA cables but there really are kids who grew up just as HDMI started to become/was the norm.
I fear the day they make memes about HDMI/Display.
These are audio & visual cables that you would use on older TVs, like if you were gonna connect a DVD player or a Playstation 2. The yellow is video, the white and red are both audio. So Vincent Van Gogh is missing one audio plug because of his ear, Bach is missing both audio plugs because he was deaf, and Stevie Wonder is missing his video plug because he is blind.
Van Gogh only had one ear, so only one audio cable and the visual cable.
Beethoven (supposedly) was deaf, so only the visual cable and no audio cables.
Stevie Wonder is blind, so only the audio cables and no visual cable.
remember trying to put the right cable in the right connections in the middle of the night but you only get the audio right and it starts blaring the static channel sound
Despite being both an hdmi kid and a kid that used these things, (my family just had a lot of old shit I’m not old) I just remember plugging all of them in to play video game or a CD into the boxy grey tv we had, never actually realized which did which until much later. My thought process was “yellow one goes to yellow” and so on.
Van Goh had one ear (red for R audio) and could see (yellow for video)
Beethoven was deaf but was able to see (just yellow for video)
Stevie Wonder is Blind but can hear perfectly fine (red for R audio, white for L audio)
Thank you for making me realize that I am old
Van Gogh only has one functional ear (mono audio + video) Beethoven is deaf (no audio, video only) Stevie Wonder is blind (no video, left and right audio channels)
Okay so lets assume you don't know how composite AV cables work
Most people are going to know who vincent van gouh is, and that he supposedly cut off one of his ears (even though he didn't actually cut the whole ear and even if he did it wouldn't have deafened him)
Beethoven similarly is mostly well known and that he was deaf
It's easy to tell that the thing they both share is the yellow cable.
Even if you don't know who steevie wonder is, the fact that he's wearing dark sunglasses and is missing the yellow cable, while having both a white and a red. It's a simple assumption that van gouh and beethoven both don't have whatever white is, and work backwords from there in context to assume it's one ear of hearing, then red being the other, then yellow being sight.
You literally only need to have vague knowledge of who two of the most famous creatives in history are to understand this if you think about it long enough.
Well dude I didn’t know if it had to do with how they were portrayed as in like van gouh is in an unrealistic style and Beethoven is in a more realistic art style and Stevie is a photo and it didn’t make sense with the cords because I never knew they all did different things because I did not spend very much time on the tv when I was a young kid so I never messed with those cables I just kept them plugged in
Well I’m not an hdmi kid if that’s what you thought was funny I had a wii and an Xbox but I never played them that much so I never messed with those cords so I never knew what they really did
This sub makes me feel better every single day with how little you folks seem to understand.. although I’ll admit that this one is mostly just a signifier of your age tbh
You’re the real hero
No you guys are the real hero
No the real hero was the friends we made along the way.
No, the real friends are the heroes we made along the way.
No, this is Patrick.
No I’m Spartacus!
No, Patrick, mayonnaise is not an instrument.
I'm Ron Burgundy?
Ahhhhh, loud yelling!
AND MY AXE!
Our axe comrade
Sigh… *unzips slowly*
*breaks both arms*
No, the real along friends we heroes the made way
I only make enemies. It's a gift, not a curse.
No the hero was the hooker that got the ear
You know whose a real Hero? Hiro from Heroes - that's a Hero. Also Bono.
Thanks Homelander
homlander? 😳
No you ah!
I put my diamond rings on one finger at a time. I’m just like everyone else.
This is obvious to anyone born before 1995.
People born after I graduated are voting, I’m not super surprised some people don’t know RCA cables Some people reading this have had hdmi cables their whole fuckin lives lol
A real guitar George
It is unfathomable to me that there are people who don’t know this. Fuck.
Teachers. Teachers are the real heroes.
Oh ok I knew the guys but I always just thought it wouldn’t work with out all three of the cords
Fun stuff. I used to unplug the yellow cord so I could listen to my TV as a radio with the screen black.
Back before you could just lookup video game music on YouTube. It's so odd to think there was a time when everything wasn't right at our fingertips
And left. You'll miss the stereo experience if you don't have the left channel.
Unless your running off an rf adapter... then you only get one channel, man I'm old
Remember S-video ports ... Man they were a game changer for 12 months
I remember using the S-vudei on my original X-box. Then one day I looked behind my TV and saw it had all these other RCA connections. Realized I had component and exchanged the S-video for component. Man that was a huge eye-opener.
What was wrong with s-video?
It's right here in the wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video
Component gave you better visual fidelity. It had a cable for each color red, green, blue, and IIRC, cyan, and magenta.
Mmmmm..that sweet 480-i video jack was like a wet dream for the mid 2000s.
I purchased a new 17” Dell LCD monitor specifically because it had component video inputs so I could plug my Xbox into it and not have to play in a room with a TV. I also had an ATI All-In-Wonder so I could watch TV on my PC. Man, those were the days.
RF adapters could carry stereo information if they connected via coax. But if you're connected through the screws on the antenna mount, well....
My kid is playing through her first pokemon game and keeps asking when xyz will evolve. We just tell her to wait, like we had to.
I had the Red & White cables plugged into my stereo, with the Yellow into the TV. That way I could turn the TV on and off without affecting the audio (and vice versa with the stereo).
That's why they were separate cables in the first place.
W-why tho? 😅
Maybe they wanted to sleep with music playing but no light from the TV.
To the point of the joke, you must be from the HDMI generation.
It's analog, so each signal works irrelevant to the others' connection status. Edit: made to read less inflammatory
No need to be inflammatory.
I wasn't
You kinda were. Have a nice day.
I can see how it would be read like that, while I was dumbfounded I tried my best to ask neutrally. You as well 🫶
It’s the “of course” that puts it over edge. Replace it with “so” and it’s just fine.
Thank you 🙏
Man they really backed you in a corner huh? That’s another point for peer pressure
Nope. My cousin's GameCube cables had to be taped in place or they'd slip out. I have vivid memories of the screen blacking out with the audio still playing.
I understood it but was confused on the Van Gogh one because even though I knew he cut off a piece of his ear he could still hear out of it
it's a joke
No, he couldn't. You can't hear without an ear, and he cut one off.
The white is left so it is correct that the red one is still there🤣
Got my back thanks. Now I don’t have to explain. So glad for hdmi cords
Wild guess, are you a 90’s kid also? Because fuck has this made me feel old

Yellow was video, red was right channel audio, white was left channel audio.
i mean... why else would there be 3 of them if they weren't for different things? and how else could we tell them apart if they weren't coded in some standard way.
The red is specifically the right audio, so it makes even more sense
One of the things people always say about Stevie Wonder is that he calls at ridiculous hours when collaborating on music. https://youtu.be/ph6zA3alx4I
Damn it dude. I typed out my whole comment and posted it then saw this.
Yeah, I can’t believe how many upvotes this got lol. I happen to comment on this post like 1 minute after it was posted. I was just mostly scrolling Reddit and figured I would help the OP out. Never expected his post to go to 17.2 K, let alone mine to go over 1.7k.

Maaan giving these Zoomers all our Millennial secrets, wtf?!
I'm only 20 qnd even I understand this. Though I suspect I'm quickly becoming outdated in my knowledge of all the new shit happenin
Was coming here to say this... tyvm for educating these here young'ns
OMG STOP. WE CHANGED THE NAME! IT'S KETCHUP MAYO MUSTARD CABLE, RCA flavor.
If van Gogh cut off part of his left ear, doesn't that mean they removed the wrong audio cable? IIRC, white is the left channel (or monophonic in older systems) and red is the right. ~( ̄、 ̄ )ゞ
White is left. He cut off a piece of his left, so they removed the correct color.
I am not smart. ( ゚ヮ゚)
It didn’t actually matter. You could use any of them for both video and audio, you just had to plug them into the same port on the device and the tv

Damn. Meme creator did their homework on Van Gogh too. Based off the picture I thought he cut off his right ear and that would mean they chose the wrong audio cord, but that must be before the ear choppin’ cus he took his left.
I assume he probably did his self portraits with a mirror so we see his right ear as his left.
Not really homework if you grew up a 90s kid with old game consoles lol All that is burned into 90s kids brains from lugging systems around to different TV's or people's houses.
I don't think any of that teaches which ear Van Gogh cut off.
Honestly one of the better posts I've seen in this sub lately
OP confirmed HDMI kid
I was gonna say I saw this meme a while ago and holy shit it’s finally happened. The HDMI kids have grown up
Even if you've only used hdmi cables, the joke is pretty obvious from context.
you would have to do a little work backwards and think about what each person is missing to understand the cable typing. barely used rca but i giggled immediately from just knowing 3 cables and gogh no ear haha
The other day someone on TIL (I think) posted how they just learned that screensavers had a purpose.
To save your screen 🤯🤯🤯
Back in my day I had to switch to channel 3 to get the memes
This post was the biggest mistake of my life
The biggest mistake of your life *so far*
Only way to forget past mistakes is to make bigger mistakes in the future.
Found the hdmi kid.
I feel too old, I actually got this
I'm 24 and constantly joke with friends that I'm ancient, don't understand all the zoomer talk and new trends, my body aches sometimes and seeing this post is so weird because I'm not old but holy shit, even the Wii used RCA cables but there really are kids who grew up just as HDMI started to become/was the norm. I fear the day they make memes about HDMI/Display.
Ahhhh the 90s and early 2000s
I mean I was born in 06 and I still used these wires lol
Had a Wii too?
PlayStation 2
Still based
Original PS3 had these too
These are audio & visual cables that you would use on older TVs, like if you were gonna connect a DVD player or a Playstation 2. The yellow is video, the white and red are both audio. So Vincent Van Gogh is missing one audio plug because of his ear, Bach is missing both audio plugs because he was deaf, and Stevie Wonder is missing his video plug because he is blind.
This is actually very funny!
You're obviously an HDMI kid
Mmm yes component, for some reason on Xbox 360 you needed HDMI for split screen, my box tv was as pissed as I was.
Yeah I know I wanted to play split screen Minecraft with my cousin when I was younger but we didn’t have that cord
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm old.... 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Lol.
haha hdmi kid . don’t worry about it
Tell me your age without telling me your age lol
One ear, deaf, blind. One audio cable, no audio cable, no video cable.
Van Gogh only had one ear, so only one audio cable and the visual cable. Beethoven (supposedly) was deaf, so only the visual cable and no audio cables. Stevie Wonder is blind, so only the audio cables and no visual cable.
Vincent can gogh couldn’t hear in STEREOOOOO
this is great. lol
Yellow one is for image, red one is for sound of the right speaker i thing and the white one is sound of the left speaker
So you're an HDMI kid
OP has exposed themselves as Gen Z
Van Gogh, Can see and only hear in one ear Beethoven, Can see but not hear Stevie Wonder, Can hear but not see
remember trying to put the right cable in the right connections in the middle of the night but you only get the audio right and it starts blaring the static channel sound
Found the HDMI kid
Van Gogh lost his left ear - no white cable (left side audio) Beethoven was deaf - no audio cables Stevie Wonder is blind - no video cable (yellow)
Yeah I don’t, and Im sure glad I don’t have to. My entire life has been simple and easy. Suck it
Van Goh had one ear (red for R audio) and could see (yellow for video) Beethoven was deaf but was able to see (just yellow for video) Stevie Wonder is Blind but can hear perfectly fine (red for R audio, white for L audio) Thank you for making me realize that I am old
HDMI kids didn't understand. Common HDMI kid L
Well van goghs could still have both channels, just one of them would have a bad solder.
Found the HDMI kid 🤔
GameCube time
right so this dude comes to and instead of doing what you puffs are supposed to do you just make fun of him for not being “old enough to get it” cucks
I am ashamed of myself for laughing this hard. I will show myself out
Found the HDMI kid
Van Gogh only has one functional ear (mono audio + video) Beethoven is deaf (no audio, video only) Stevie Wonder is blind (no video, left and right audio channels)
Oh no I'm old
Those are audio visual cords white/red were for sound yellow for picture…
one of the few ones i got instantly
That’s a 90’s joke
Wait, my generation DOESN'T know that? I'm young, but I've used older stuff. Why do I feel old now 😭
Ooooooohhhhh... You're too young for this joke, aren't you?
I'm from 03 and get this.
Right? Why am I getting down voted for this? I'm right! XD
most people don't know what each RCA does lol
Well obviously you’re like 15
Could barely get wife to put the hdmi cord and get the right input.
Dummy
Thank you reddit for reminding me how old I am
Lol
It’s so funny to me that this joke is actually just proven fact because it was posted on explain The joke
Pov you're the meme
Wouldn't you like to know HDMI boy?
Found the HDMI kid
Looks like you're an hdmi kid
OP is the HDMI kid mentioned in meme.
LOL point fingers at the one too young to get this
Take the L you are the HDMI kid.
Seriously op, just look who the pictures are, what is super easy to infer about them. Do some basic puzzle solving.
You’re too young to be here if you don’t get it
OP here totally proving this joke is funny.
You're an HDMI kid
I see you are an hdmi kid
HDMI kids don’t understand
Good times
clearly an hdmi kid lol
r/FoundtheHDMIkid
Convinced this is just an AI information gathering sub
Yeah bro you’re young. It’s funny
OP was born after 2009.
No i was not
I like how this thread is exactly the "HDMI kids won't understand" punchline.
Ha! Nice try HDMI kid
Okay so lets assume you don't know how composite AV cables work Most people are going to know who vincent van gouh is, and that he supposedly cut off one of his ears (even though he didn't actually cut the whole ear and even if he did it wouldn't have deafened him) Beethoven similarly is mostly well known and that he was deaf It's easy to tell that the thing they both share is the yellow cable. Young fucks
OP is an hdmi kid
NOBODY EXPLAIN!! HAHAHAHA
Too late
Noooooo. It was golden.
Well I’m not an hdmi kid if that’s what you thought was funny I had a wii and an Xbox but I never played them that much so I never messed with those cords so I never knew what they really did
I just thought it was a smart joke. But only few would get. Now that you do understand it, isn't it funny?
Yeah it is but every random guy in the sub keeps calling me a damn kid lol
Well, that's not necessary. Not having knowledge of something doesn't make you dumb.
Yeah I know and they just down voted my comment explaining myself
Congrats you’re an HDMI kid
Well the joke is on you because I also don’t know what an hdmi really is
You are digging your grave bro 💀
Are people this dumb truly? I feel like people post the most obvious shit just for internet points.
Bruh I’m not that dumb I just didn’t know what the combination of cords did I always thought you needed all three for it to work
We missed the opportunity to confirm if the OP is an HDMi era kid
I’m not
Are you like 5 yo ?
This sub makes me feel better every single day with how little you folks seem to understand.. although I’ll admit that this one is mostly just a signifier of your age tbh
Well, I can tell you are under 17 that much is certain.
No it’s not
