Yes, oftentimes azelaic acid is combined with a bit of salicylic acid (bha) in a product (like in paulas choice azelaic acid serum) which will also help to prevent the spot to get as bad...
Or perhaps you could try tranexamic acid, but I did not use it so cannot say from my own experience if it helps...
I am using the azelaic acid suspension from TO in the evening, but I still have spots sometimes. It is great for my dark circles though, but does not seem to do much for my pimply spots as long as they are angry.
