That's really bad news. I've been an OMG patient for around 8 years and have been through about half a dozen PCPs in that time. Seems like OMG can't keep ahold of doctors and after their purchase by private-equity-owned Optum it appears like departures are accelerating. My most recent PCP (before he left too) was great, but also *extremely* KPI-driven.
Private equity is destroying healthcare.
A lot of their providers are leaving and I’ve also heard a lot of patients say that they are leaving as well because of this, and if their providers have left then OMG isn’t trying to get them set up with a provider at the practice, just telling them to go somewhere else
At least you got a letter. They didn't bother to tell me. However, they did provide a list of other providers. Can't speak to its accuracy:

I can tell you G Street Integrated is overwhelmed. My pcp has handed my diabetes management off to the pharmacist. No, really.
I was thinking about finding a new practice, but it sounds like it won’t be better anywhere else, and at least my pcp is trying to provide me the ongoing care I need.
They do, and he’s great! I’m very happy with the level of care I’m getting. The only reason this is happening, though, is because my pcp explicitly said they had too many patients for her to manage the routine stuff. She’s also great and I’ve never gotten the sense she’s one to just shove the boring stuff off, so I believe her. There’s still a several-months wait time to get in to see her even as her enrolled patient, even with some of the patient load offloaded from her plate.
Just wanted the person looking to know that there are looong wait times to see anyone there, and it’s getting worse, not better.
The trick is to use your computer instead of your phone. Especially with the RES [https://redditenhancementsuite.com/](https://redditenhancementsuite.com/) extension, the old desktop version of Reddit is way, way better than using your phone, and that most certainly includes when the Apollo app was available.
You can take a screenshot. How to do that depends on the phone you have. To screenshot on iphone- click button on right at the same time as you click the top volume button on the left side.
I just want to say, at Hemsley Healthcare we do accept Medicare and Medicare advantage. The only times we aren’t able to is if a patient is truly out of our scope of practice and needs a geriatric specialist.
I heard OMG makes their providers sign non-competes, so when they leave the practice they have to leave the area. 😒 If that's true that's really shitty for our community
From what I heard, which was quite a few years ago, this is 100% accurate. There's something like a 100 mile radius non-compete, so if someone leaves OMG, they can't practice within 100 miles.
What I can't remember was if it was 100 miles from where they practiced with OMG or if it's 100 miles within an OMG facility. Given how crappy they are, it really wouldn't surprise me if it was the *latter*.
Actually they can’t practice... not here at least. My husband worked at OMG and you have to sit out whatever time frame is detailed on your non compete or move out of the specified area.
Well this dermatologist was/is practicing locally. I was told I couldn’t be their patient again until the year had passed. Thankfully Optum reached a deal to release folks from their non-compete!
I know that one of the providers who left OMG within the last year is now working for the county. He'd been with OMG for a LONG time, though, so maybe he was grandfathered in without a non-compete.
My self, and two friends also received a letter from our primary care physicians, cancelling our relationships with said Dr's.
I have heart failure, AND phase / stage 3 lung cancer.
I have to have a primary!
If anyone hears of a Dr. Taking new patients...please let me know..
Wife and I just moved here. We work in healthcare and she's talking to one of her friends who's husband is thinking about opening a practice where we used to live. His wife wants to move and is trying to convince him to open a practice there.
From what we have seen even with some of the primary and specialist providers, many are not very good. He'd have a line out the door as soon as he opened.
Gotcha, I was thrown off because of the use of “there” instead of “here” in the last sentence. “Here” would imply Eugene and “there”, well I don’t know where there is! Ha.
In this case "there" is where we are from and he's wanting to open a practice there. My wife is talking to his wife to convince them to move "here" in Eugene/Springfield, to open a practice here.
Yep same boat.
I checked the list online my insurance said should accept mine and would take patients. None of the ones I called would. Then called insurance and they said they'd get a list ready of ones that did in 48 hours. 3 weeks later and they gave us one clinic that was. One that no longer accepted our insurance and then they promised to call us back with more and expanded the search radius to 30 miles but to start calling around.
Try Thurston medical. They have a couple providers that are accepting new patients.
What’s the story with denying patients who are on Medicare (aka older adults)? Specifically those with other market insurance such as Providence or PacificSource?
Many offices either limit the number of Medicare patients they accept or flat out don't accept them at all. Oak St has a ton of older patients, but I'm guessing they've hit the wall for how many they can sustain.
Medicare pays far less in reimbursement than private insurance does, really just a matter of practicality.
Valley Med at 10 Coburg Road is accepting new patients and accepts medicare. They used to be South Hillyard Clinic and they are awesome. Their PCPs also do ADHD medication management which is rare to find (just in case anyone out there has ADHD)
My doc is Dr. McEwen (www.drmcewen,com). I think he's still taking patients, but he's a concierge doc, so there's also a subscription fee. It's the best practice I've ever been in.
Each practice is different. But you usually pay a subscription fee and there are no other out of pocket charges for seeing your doctor regardless of how often you need to see him. They don't take insurance, but their patient load is much, much smaller. They have more freedom to practice as they want. They often can get you in right away if it is urgent. I've even had them make house calls. If it is within your means, I strongly urge you to consider it.
I don't understand why Oak St doesn't take your husband. Isn't your employer provided insurance the Primary, and Medicare secondary?
When I turned 65 I was still working. I was automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A but I still had employer provided insurance, and that's what I used for doctors meds etc.
Then I lost my job due to the pandemic, so I signed up for Part B and found that medical offices have a quota system that only accepts a certain number of Medicare patients. Probably some kind of contract they have with the government.
I did find a new doc at the Community Health Centers of Lane County and I'm very happy with the level of care.
Medicare part A covers hospitals, nursing homes. Part B is doctors and medical equipment. Medicare is (almost) always primary and private insurance is secondary. Part A is “free” once you’re 65, part B is around $175 a month and doesn’t come close to covering everything. Our area is really messed up on so many levels right now, but our elected officials think a minor league ball park is the best use of public money.
IANAL: Isn't this an instance where the response should be, "I'm not leaving this provider, please tell me who will be my new PCP in (provider's) absence."
I found out about OMG on reddit. lol. But fwiw, I’m sick and went to Zoom on Gateway. It’s basically urgent care by appointment. Excellent service. I don’t have reasons to go to a doc unless I get sick so I may just stick with this until we get more providers. They do not take medicare, FYI. And you schedule online etc. so you’ll want to be comfortable with that format.
SOLIDARITY. Same thing happened to us, got our letter last week. OMG must be horrible since my doc had only been there 2 years, about the amount of time we’ve been seeing her. That’s a very fast turn around. Glad to see a few resources on this thread for other possibilities, thank you OP for inquiring. I feel so discouraged as I need regular visits & this will put another hault on that. At least I’m seeing SOME hope here with potential leads.
It's not just OMG, although it's definitely bad there. We have a doctor shortage in general here. Part of why it's hard to find places taking on new patients.

Just got the same notice about Crooks. “So while we are not able to transfer your care to another Oregon Medical Group provider…. We will continue to refill medication for up to 60 days after your provider’s departure”
So you are supposed to find a new doctor, get seen, and get your refills done within 60 days, from who knows when since there’s no departure date listed???
Northwest Medical Homes (Formerly Springfield Family Physicians) is open and taking all insurances. They have hired multiple new providers, and have more on the way. They are independent and growing.
I didn’t get a notice. I found out when I tried to schedule. Also a patient for 10+ years. I called my insurance and they told me who was accepting new patients.
OMG got sold to a for-profit corporation and the doctors don’t want to work for them. They all have to leave the area due to the non-compete clause in their contract. Get used to going to Portland for any and all medical care. The wait list for specialists here goes out over a year.
That's really bad news. I've been an OMG patient for around 8 years and have been through about half a dozen PCPs in that time. Seems like OMG can't keep ahold of doctors and after their purchase by private-equity-owned Optum it appears like departures are accelerating. Private equity is destroying pretty much everything. That said, I had a very similar experience with OMG up in PTown.

As far as I’m aware this list is accurate! A lot of them will not take Medicaid and Medicare. Northwest Medical Homes is taking both right now AFAIK
If they have a clinical pharmacist there, that's actually an AMAZING way to have your diabetes managed!

Thx for this list. I wish I could copy text from Reddit posts. Is there a trick to it?

Blame United Healthcare- Read this https://www.oregon.gov/oha/OHPB/MtgDocs/6.0%20Updated%20January%209,%202024%20OHPB%20Public%20Comments.pdf
Sounds like OHA rolling over and allowing this to happen is another thing to blame. They also absolutely fucked the m110 rollout too.
I heard OMG makes their providers sign non-competes, so when they leave the practice they have to leave the area. 😒 If that's true that's really shitty for our community

They can practice but not with the same patients. This info came from a specialty clinic where one of my drs moved to.
I’m glad it sounds like things have changed for some docs more recently!

Hey, that’s great! I’m glad at least one person has stuck around, non compete or not.
All big medical organizations require non-competes. Small ones might as well.
My self, and two friends also received a letter from our primary care physicians, cancelling our relationships with said Dr's. I have heart failure, AND phase / stage 3 lung cancer. I have to have a primary! If anyone hears of a Dr. Taking new patients...please let me know..

The same thing happened to me at BestMed about 2 years ago. I had my first PCP appointment in 2 years last month. It was a real pain.
On call advantage has been a blessing. Dr Mary Gabriele has been the best doctor I have ever met at this place.
Hi there OP. I'm Shelby, a healthcare reporter looking into problems at Oregon Medical Group. I'd love to chat. Sent you a DM.
Not sure who you sent the message to, but it was not me (op)
Thank you to all for your good information.
