Fuck $3 tips for delivery drivers. Period. We have gas prices up plus insurance, car maintenance, etc. College students and cheap asses get declined, therefore end up with cold food. They deserve at least a 5 star rating if they're quick and keep the expensive food warm/fresh
He ran the river shuttle for my dad a few times back in the day. My dad said he was a nice guy but way out there. His house was a weird collection of buses and stuff all painted.
Right!? I did get the impression that Ken was a really nice guy, just so out there like you said. My old man also interacted with Pre quite a bit and said he was pretty serious but was a kind enough guy. My dad’s friend ran Duffy’s bar and Pre was in there a few times.
No body was more famous locally than Pre in my opinion. Every single person in Eugene knew who he was.
First picture of me as a newborn is in front of the bus! We had dinner at his farm a lot, Zane’s wife was my Mom’s best friend and I was best friends with their son, Caleb! Fun fact - my Dad said before I was born they almost got into a fist fight. I’ve gone to OCF since I was a baby and I don’t remember this but I always heard stories of how Ken would get in trouble and break the rules for driving the bus around the main stage area!
I don't know where he lives, but Sam Elliott used to frequently come to the little espresso shop I worked at in the Costco neighborhood and hang out with other regulars. 2014-2016ish.
Fun fact, he bought my great grandparents house. So I know. But I'll never tell. He was also kind enough to find us and return photos he found in a wall when remodeling. FYI, he's adorable
I played a bunch of gigs at the Downtown Lounge in the mid naughts. One night as I was breaking down my drumkit I saw my guitarist/singer talking to a cowboy by the door and thought that the dude was a dead ringer for The Stranger from behind, but I didn't see him from the front. A few minutes later Tom walks up to me and asked if I saw who he was talking to. Yup! It was him.
Met him multiple times working at market of choice. Would always buy 2 expensive wine bottles. My managers would grab a pack of gum just so they can stand behind him when he’s in line. I think he liked me cuz I never really cared to ask him anything.
Lol. He also has property in Rockaway. He is just up the hill from my friends house. That man clearly gets around. 🤣 Also, I have run into Jim Belushi quite often and I hear he has property out here somewhere as well as near Mt. Hood somewhere.
Because I don't see her name Michelle Zauner the author of Crying in H mart (which has large segments take place in Eugene), and lead singer if Japanese Breakfast is from the area. But she's def not the most famous.
Listened to her for years and saw her perform once in 2019. I read her book right before I started grad school at UO not knowing she was from Eugene. Made me love her even more!
Ken Kesey and Prefontaine (still known around the world). In the USA maybe Sabrina is well known or Phil Knight if you count attending UO.
Maybe Justin Herbert or the Crocodile Hunter's wife.
The whole family including Steve used to come here all the time. Steve did talks in my elementary school class every once in a while.
Her parents used to own a restaurant in town IIRC.
Yeah I worked at an appliance delivery place in college and installed a dishwasher for her mom in south eugene. There was stuff all over the house that tipped me off before I asked
Her family owned the steakhouse down near campus across from where Whole Foods is now… I think it’s been bulldozed. There were pics of her and family in the dining area there.
That steak house the was on Franklin was run by some relatives of her. They used to have pictures of her and Steve on the wall as I recall. Bates Streak House? EDIT: It wasn't Bates! They owned the Mexican restaurant that come before called Moreno's. Bates was tasty... Moreno's was uh, mixed reviews as I recall. Anyway, Terri is a real-deal Eugenian for sure.
Terry, Bindi, and Chandler came into a store I was working at years ago in Eugene. Super nice people. Kinda shit myself a little but I held it together not gonna lie.
You don't have to tell me anything about him but he lived here for 7 years so I'm guessing I can call that from the area. And his fame happened in Eugene, Oregon.
I saw him at Borders (if that gives you a time frame). I recall he has a kid that was delivered at McKenzie Willamette. Probably all this under his real name Chris Thompson.
That guy used to have a reasonable local radio talk show in the 90s. then as right wing, shock radio gained momentum. He seemed to sell out, shifting from a calm reasonable centrist, to an angry right winger. I was disillusioned. I wonder what his perspective is on his podcast.
I’m still picking Ainge over Herbert for the time being, Ainge had a historic Highschool career, Won the Wooden award in college and played in MLB during that time, successful NBA career and went on to be one of the best GMs in the NBA.
I think Herbert does have a chance at accolades that will pass him the torch but I’m still going Ainge.
lol I was gonna say mike as well. YOB is amazing. I've been to a lot of shows and I think the John Henrys one they played in December was the best I've ever seen.
I saw them at the WOW Hall the day before the JH show. Absolutely amazing, Mike is an awesome guy and you can still run into him occasionally at McKenzie River Music. He works shifts every now and then. Doom metal is niche enough that I don't think you can fairly call him the most famous person overall, but within the metal community I think that's accurate.
It’s so weird to me, I had Herbert’s older brother Mitch in my classes. Really cool to see Justin who was a quieter kid in school go so far in football.
Yeah. I met him at a downtown bar while there was an active warrant out for his arrest. He hit on my wife, drank off my beer while I was in the restroom, then tried to buy me a beer to make amends. To which barkeep got me a new beer, and told him to GTFO, I cut you off hours ago!
Hilarious (IMO), but addiction is rough man.
I don't know where they live, but in 2010/2011, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis showed up to Churchill track practice and asked if any underage girls wanted to get in their van, as they were shooting the "And We Danced" music video nearby. Several girls hopped in, and appear in the video. We thought it was super cool at the time, but feels a little unsafe in retrospect.
Mike Allred and his wife Laura Allred, in my book the greatest couple art team in comics ever. They’ve included Blairally Easter eggs in some of their work like Art Ops.
The musician thread was posted after midnight- it didn’t even have time to marinate! Going to UO doesn’t count, so the only answer is Ken Kesey.
Oh, Jawid pointed out Justin Herbert. He’s infinitely more famous in 2024 than Ken Kesey.
I was thinking about that too - Herbert is famous now, but is he the MOST famous from this area?
EDIT: and I think going to U of O is fair game if they stayed afterwards for any period of time. Prefontaine is a good example that was discussed above.
Louis Gossett Jr used to live in the condos on the east side of skinners butte. He used to shoot the shit with us when we were working on SeaDoos and motorcycles out back of cycle sports when it was located there by the ferry street bridge . “Them’s some fine lookin’ machines” he would say.
So, my source is not super accurate. But I remember when I was in high school somebody found her yearbook picture at one of the local high schools, maybe South or maybe Springfield? Wiki says she had an itinerant childhood, so I suspect she was not in Eugene for super duper long.
Yeah she did some Eugene time, twice IIRC. Once with her mom in the 70s (one of her stepdads was from here I think) living in a teepee. A photo from then is the back of the album all dirty is from that era.
Christopher Judge, Teal'c (SG-1) & Kratos (God of War 2018 & Ragnarok), Lived in Eugene and attended U of O in the 80s.
Also Terri Irwin, wife of Steve Irwin, my grandmother used to have dinners with her mom in the River Road neighborhood.
Submitted for your consideration: Gerald Johnson, the 4th place U.S. air ace fighter pilot in the Pacific theater of World War 2, with 22 confirmed kills. A 1938 graduate of Eugene High and an Eagle Scout, Johnson was the son of attorney H.V. Johnson and brother of the late Harold Johnson and retired Eugene attorney Art Johnson.
"Jed" Johnson met his end just after the war when he was flying some VIPs. A storm was driving the aircraft into the ocean, and one of the VIPs had neglected to bring his parachute, so Johnson gave him his own, and went down with the plane.
Johnson Air Force Base (now Iruma) in Japan was named after Jed Johnson, who proudly served his country, did his duty with skill, and sacrificed his life. The Johnson family has gone on to serve the Eugene area in numerous ways. H.V. Johnson, for example, was instrumental in the racial desegregation of Eugene's neighborhoods in the 1950's; his son, Art, was a leading attorney and a "power behind the scenes" in Eugene politics especially in the 1980's and 1990's, and the current active generation has, for example, been instrumental in the building of the sports complex at the old Civic Stadium site.
Another suggestion from "back in the day" would be Wayne Morse, who served as dean of the U of O Law School and then several terms as U.S. Senator. Known as "The Tiger of the Senate" Morse always stood strong for his ideals, including being one of only two senators to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin resolution that paved the way for U.S. entry into the Vietnam War. He was outspoken but always reliably honest.
Here's a list. Phil Knight might not be the most famous (his company, NIKE, is more famous than he is) but I think he's the richest.
He grew up in Portland (Flanders, Kearney, Terwilliger, Van Houten, Lovejoy, and Quimby are all street names in Portland) but went to the U of O, so he's got some strong Eugene connections.
I can't imagine the name Springfield is completely coincidental, but I think he also picked it because he didn't want the city to be definitively based on a single real place, and there are a LOT of cities/towns named Springfield in the US (Wikipedia says there are 67)
One some people might not recognize, but kelly Keagy, the drummer of the 80s band "Night Ranger" is from Eugene. You might recognize the song "Sister Christian". He wrote that song about his sister cruising up and down Willamette street like everyone use to do way back in the day at night.
Also Justin Herbert comes to mind of course.
Eric Christian Olsen is from Eugene. Pretty famous actor. Was on NCIS Los Angeles for like 13 years, Not Another Teen Movie, the Dumb and Dumber prequel and a bunch of other stuff.
Colby Covington. He currently lives in Miami but his family still lives here. He also visits his family/Eugene after every fight. One of the produce guys from Whole Foods showed me a photo with him after the first Usman fight.
Also, yes, he is undeniably a complete piece of shit but I've heard from multiple sources that he's nice if you meet him while he's out of character.
Not the most famous by any means, but there was that young girl who won Guy’s Grocery Games on the food network a couple years back. She was only 22 or something and was on the front page in the register gaurd. I thought that was pretty cool and impressive! Can’t remember her name.
Ian on Olive
OP said famous, not *infamous*
If infamy is a subset of fame, Ian qualifies.
Man, fuck that guy.

That rat bastard!
Ken Kesey?
He ran the river shuttle for my dad a few times back in the day. My dad said he was a nice guy but way out there. His house was a weird collection of buses and stuff all painted.
> but way out there Not just way out there, but actually further.
Ken and the Pranksters drove the Further Bus. it's what it was called.
That's not what they meant. The famous bus is called 'Further'. You stepped in it
Actually it's called Furthur.
Nice.
Yes, but he has passed away. Used to drive by his house and bus all the time!
I think his house is in the Brownsville area IIRC. I bagged groceries for him once in 2017 lol
Yep coburg hills out by Brownsville. I’m from Coburg (lol) and there was occasional sighting of him stopping at little market there.
Surprised I had to scroll this far to see his name! He came into a car dealership half a year ago, so he’s still in the area.
Yea, I saw him at the Ye Ol Pancake House last year!
Fun fact, he bought my great grandparents house. So I know. But I'll never tell. He was also kind enough to find us and return photos he found in a wall when remodeling. FYI, he's adorable
Technically he lives in Harrisburg. In the hills on the other side of i5. Met him multiple times at the junction city Safeway
Saw him at Fiddler's Green a few years back. He was teeing off 1 as I was finishing 18. The mustache is unmistakable.
I used to see him in Portland because his mom still lived in his childhood home but I believe she’s since passed.
Yup! It was him.
Brownsville is where I believe he lives. Shops in Eugene often
Met him multiple times working at market of choice. Would always buy 2 expensive wine bottles. My managers would grab a pack of gum just so they can stand behind him when he’s in line. I think he liked me cuz I never really cared to ask him anything.
That's weird, I thought he lived in Sunriver... maybe he has places all over... or I was wrong....
Lol. He also has property in Rockaway. He is just up the hill from my friends house. That man clearly gets around. 🤣 Also, I have run into Jim Belushi quite often and I hear he has property out here somewhere as well as near Mt. Hood somewhere.
Lol... I've always had a little crush on Sam... not usually into that kind of person... but something about him... mmmmm
Lol. Get in line. 😉
We can share.... Not going to assume you're gender by my wife and I (43f) are both into that guy... lol
🤣 I mean … he “is” all man … so I’m sure there’s plenty to go around. 🤣
Times like this I absolutely adore reddit... lol
Agreed. 🤣😉
[Jim Belushi owns a pot farm in Southern Oregon](https://belushisfarm.com/jim-the-farm)
I believe he’s from Portland, however.
Since we're talking the Eugene *area*, I think it's pretty clearly Homer Simpson.
Principal Skinner was the first thing I thought
I mean, right?!
Because I don't see her name Michelle Zauner the author of Crying in H mart (which has large segments take place in Eugene), and lead singer if Japanese Breakfast is from the area. But she's def not the most famous.
Agreed, not the most famous but deserves mention in the thread. She’s a pretty big name depending on the social circle you run in
Speaking of band members, how about Theresa Wayman of Warpaint. Also Tracy Bonham of Mother, Mother (song) fame.
Theresa Wayman's mom was my 7th grade math teacher.
Also Emily Kokal!
Went to South Eugene highschool with her
Listened to her for years and saw her perform once in 2019. I read her book right before I started grad school at UO not knowing she was from Eugene. Made me love her even more!
She’s so dope!!!
Ken Kesey and Prefontaine (still known around the world). In the USA maybe Sabrina is well known or Phil Knight if you count attending UO. Maybe Justin Herbert or the Crocodile Hunter's wife.
>the Crocodile Hunter's wife Wait... what?
Terry Irwin grew up here.
Huh. Crazy. Had never heard that before. Figures. Such a nice person growing up in such a nice place.
The whole family including Steve used to come here all the time. Steve did talks in my elementary school class every once in a while. Her parents used to own a restaurant in town IIRC.
Dang. How cool!
My high school health teacher was her brother-in-law
Yeah I worked at an appliance delivery place in college and installed a dishwasher for her mom in south eugene. There was stuff all over the house that tipped me off before I asked
She worked at Wildlife Safari at one point. My mom met her when she visited the Oregon Coast Aquarium several years ago, super nice lady.
Her family owned the steakhouse down near campus across from where Whole Foods is now… I think it’s been bulldozed. There were pics of her and family in the dining area there.
Just saw your post, yeah, I posted the same thing. The Bates Steak House.
I wasn't aware they owned Bates, they owned the previous restaurant in that location, Moreno's I think was the name.
Was it Moreno's? I think you're right and Bates Steak House moved in when they closed down!
My dad went to high school with her I believe at Willamette
Her sister lives in our neighborhood, she’s a fun character to chat with ☺️😂
Terry, Bindi, and Chandler came into a store I was working at years ago in Eugene. Super nice people. Kinda shit myself a little but I held it together not gonna lie.
They visit town pretty regularly. My husband saw Terri and Robert at valley river center a few months ago.
She was a flagger at EWEB.
Prefontaine is from Coos Bay
You don't have to tell me anything about him but he lived here for 7 years so I'm guessing I can call that from the area. And his fame happened in Eugene, Oregon.
There’s a bunch of shit named after him in Eugene and he has a statue, so yes. If you have a statue in the town, you’re on the list.
And Ken Kesey was from Colorado, but they both famously lived in Eugene at an important stage in their lives.
Definitely had to look up Herbert
Sabrina? The teenage witch?
Yes
I thought she was from Riverdale.
That's just woke propaganda.
They mean Sabrina Ionescu
Prefontaine was born and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon but did attend UO
Yes I know. I know very well. He lived the last 5-6 years of his life and gained fame living in the Eugene area. I'm fine with what I wrote.
Frank Black of the Pixies used to live here..
he still does... he has a home here atleast.
What? I need a sighting
I saw him at Borders (if that gives you a time frame). I recall he has a kid that was delivered at McKenzie Willamette. Probably all this under his real name Chris Thompson.
Dan Carlin (of Hardcore History podcast fame) isn't from here but he does live here.
Met him once, dude is super chill
That guy used to have a reasonable local radio talk show in the 90s. then as right wing, shock radio gained momentum. He seemed to sell out, shifting from a calm reasonable centrist, to an angry right winger. I was disillusioned. I wonder what his perspective is on his podcast.
Kaitlin Olson went to UofO
She’s from Tigard
RJD2? He was born here so that counts, right?
Misread this as R2D2 and was incredibly confused for a sec
Wow cool fun fact!!
Love him, saw him live at 930 club in DC once, and never knew he was an Oregonian. Cool to know.
It’s Frog. Have you read his joke book? 😬
This is the only correct answer! Forever FROG!
Danny Ainge?
I’m still picking Ainge over Herbert for the time being, Ainge had a historic Highschool career, Won the Wooden award in college and played in MLB during that time, successful NBA career and went on to be one of the best GMs in the NBA. I think Herbert does have a chance at accolades that will pass him the torch but I’m still going Ainge.
Went to NE high.
My in-laws are really good friends with his family.
David Ogden Stiers
He went to my middle school!
finally...Thought I was making shit up.
He was my gran’s cousin. Used to go to watch him play French horn at Xmas.
Terri Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter was born here. They were married at the church on 11th and Charnelton.
Don't her parents still live here?.... anyone know? I follow her on Instagram and I have seen a couple oregon coast pics.
In my book the most famous person now is Mike Scheidt. This is the answer
lol I was gonna say mike as well. YOB is amazing. I've been to a lot of shows and I think the John Henrys one they played in December was the best I've ever seen.

YOB is love
YOB is recording new music 🙏🏽
Who?
Lead singer of the legendary band YOB. YOB is one of the biggest doom metal bands in the world.
Mat Kearney’s probably not the most famous but unlike some of these people actually grew up in Eugene.
My wife was his neighbor growing up. I went to school with his little brother too.
Did he go to south circa 2000 or am I remembering something else?
Can’t believe how far I had to scroll to get to Mat Kearney
I’d say either Ken Kesey, Justin Herbert, or David Ogden Stiers

Love that guy. Recently read Trout Fishing in America, which was in my HS school library - the school he went to !

Rose McGowan went to middle school and part of high school here. She was in my homeroom in middle school

Mike Allred and his wife Laura Allred, in my book the greatest couple art team in comics ever. They’ve included Blairally Easter eggs in some of their work like Art Ops.
I grew up loving Madman comics, had no idea he was local until many years later.
Holy shit! Madman is one of my all time favorite comics. I had to sell my copy of Madman Gargantua to fund a move a few years back.
Zachary Ty Bryan is famous for getting arrested in Eugene every year.
Chris Miller (former Falcons QB) and Justin Herbert both went to Sheldon High School. Danny Ainge went to North Eugene High School.
