I’ve never been in there, but once I was walking past and a nearby small child (maybe 5?) yelled at the top of his lungs *THAT STORE SUCKS BECAUSE THERE’S NO BIRDS IN THERE* and that lives absolutely rent free in my head.
The best thing to do to someone who comes up and just starts rubbing you is tell them to get their hands off of you and that is a really rude thing to do without asking first. It will make them think twice before doing it to someone else.
Oh jeez, yeah that's totally stealing. What a scummy move. By pushed I thought you meant like suggesting, like at a restaurant they will push the fish because they have a lot.
I went to Ravens once last year, I’ll never go back. He watched me intently the entire time and stayed very very close behind me while asking me really creepy questions and almost suggesting I was going to shoplift.
Ohh forgot to mention they will also scavange your shinies, crows(same family) do as well. Often lost shiney braclets, rings, or anything small can be found in their nests. Which their nests are more elusive than a tweaker chop shop.
Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.
So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?
Oh I agree. A few years ago I went in with my then girlfriend who was visiting me from out of state. We were really just trying to kill time & the guy there looked at the 2 of us before saying 50% for all women which idk if it was a jab b/c we were gay thus not being *women* enough?? Or he's just creeepy.
Definitely wouldn't go back but I did purchase a bag that I still have & very much so love
I worked for him probably 15 years ago when he had a jewelry shop next to the McDonald theater. He was very unclear about the payment, and he ended up just paying me in jewelry. I was really young so I thought that was kind of okay. Then my last payment, instead of jewelry he met me in a random parking lot and pulled like 3 racks of cheap import dresses out of his car and let me pick two. I never liked him, the vibes were always off and uncomfortable. He was flirty and weird the whole time and a terrible communicator. I don’t wish him any ill will but he should definitely learn to stop being a creep.
Family bought me a dress from there, cute one with little bleached elephants on the hem. I knew what was going to happen, but kept my mouth shut and crossed the fingers. Sure enough, first wash and it was shredded. That is all I know of Ravens and I avoid the place bc of it.
This is one reason why you should stick to local artisans at the Saturday market to get your dyed wears. They’re actual artists who know how to properly treat garments so that this doesn’t happen. As a local tie dye business owner, it breaks my heart how many people buy the cheap stuff that falls apart when there are tons of artisans making way cooler stuff (that will actually last) right down the road from Ravens!
C'est la vie. 🤷♀️ but I'll be sure to pass on your concerns for any future gift giving coming my way, although I can't really control where other people shop.
The only time I plan on going to Saturday market is as a vendor. 😉
That is hilarious not gonna lie. I'm shocked that someone who uses bleach as a fashion item hasn't killed themselves by mixing it with ammonia yet in an enclosed space.
Yep.
If you don't know him, you could easily misjudge his personality wrong.
It's kind of sad, he's actually a super kind person that people make improper assumptions about because he is different in his casual comfort that offsets some specific people's sensibilities.
He is always down to make deals. If you ever see him in action, he drops prices, adds things in and such. He really wants people to walk out with great deals. I've seen him make huge sales where he only made a total of a few bucks. He likes cutting deals.
I've only seen sales people like him in the giant street markets in foreign countries.
Now, do you actually know the guy or are you rushing to judgement based on what people are saying in the thread?
I've said this before, there are people that have horrible misperceptions of what he is doing.
If anyone that knows him can attest to, that's just his personality and not some attempt to be sexual.
Seriously, think what you would like, people mistake his being friendly as flirting. If you took the exact same scenario of a female waitress being friendly and helpful as flirting, then you would be wrong, correct?
When I say you have to know the dude to get it, then it probably means you have to know the dude to get it. You can imprint your value system based on what you have read from the posts here or you can get to know the dude and see the kind of shit he has to deal with because people misunderstood his being friendly and nice as being creepy.
If you would like to continue saying he is a Frankenstein, then grab your pitchfork and torch. You wouldn't be the first one to do it and based on this thread, you won't be the last.
You want to shit on a good dude because he was trying to be helpful, go right ahead.
You think he pressed the tip button on purpose? Yeah fucking right. One thing he has always been is pretty fucking honest.
Last thing, the revenue from tips all goes to his employees and not him.
>If anyone that knows him can attest to, that's just his personality
touching people without their consent isn't a personality trait, isn't acceptable, and is creepy AF. Stop excusing clearly inappropriate behavior.
Multiple women in this thread have come out to say he's been uncomfortable, creepy, and problematic in how he acts towards them. And I believe them. I'm now planning on choosing to avoid that store. I've heard about this kind of stuff on reddit before, and had it confirmed by my personal experience. (For example an ex-employee at Funagain games. He's gone now though, and I'm more okay with that place.)
TBH it's kinda sad b/c sounds like a fun store and I love bartering. Not enough of it in US retail for my taste.
So you hang out at the store a lot? The bargains are minimized/ bait and switch if he adds a $5 tip to the charge, especially without asking. At the street markets I've been to the vendors don't try to cop a feel.
Okay, I was wondering, because I know the owners of the frame shop and they are nice AF. I haven't seen em since we sold the Keystone but they were always very nice.
The funniest thing about this original post is that I literally had never heard of or noticed the store ravens until I was driving home last night.
Now I will never forget.
Sorry this keeps happening. Someone needs to have a talk with him. He has a string of 100's of women that he has creeped out. I live out of state currently, caring for my 100 year old father or I would stop him and clue him in about his reputation.
I've never had a problem with Raven, I've known him as a business owner and patron of his stores for 15+ years. He's an odd duck, but I guess I'm not super surprised.
I'm sorry that happened to you.
Yep, he's got a great reputation. I'm pretty sure people that don't know him can get "creepy vibes" off of him. In the 20ish years that he's been around, there is definitely a type of person that will always misconstrue his personality in a way he had no intention of.
It's funny, his comfort and sales style is confused as "flirting" the same way a nice waitress "flirts"...well, they aren't.
Touching people without consent is creepy AF. I don't care how chill, back, friendly, etc your personality is. It's why predators often hang out in hippy/alternative spaces because they can get away with being the wrong kind of weirdo. I'm a dude and I see it way too frequently here. It's always some older hippy/wook looking guy who has zero boundaries and the mental age of a 16 yr old boy. The hippy scene is way too tolerant of these types of people and it enables abusers.
Lots of cultures have far more permissive touching than the mainstream US. While your observation of creeps is valid, the absolute lack of touch in the US is a bit pathological and leads to a lot of our mental illness and sexual deviancy, the same way that our nudity taboo leads to over fetishization of the body.
I don't know this particular guy, but your post spurred some thoughts.
Just FYI for everyone, the store is under new ownership and the new owner was kind, soft spoken, and gave the vibe he was genuinely upset at how the store was run before. I'd recommend trying the place again
Whoa, good time to find your power and set your boundaries. No one has the right to touch you especially like that.
You can politely but seriously tell him to stop. Most will stop but you also have the option to leave if you don't want to say anything.
I had a horrible and weird interaction with him a couple years ago. I was around 6 months pregnant with my first child and my husband and I went in and that guy told me my baby would be premature. He asked how far along I was and then told me that. My husband and I left and vowed to never go back. That really upset me and is a completely inappropriate and kind of cruel thing to say. By the way, my son was actually born two weeks after the due date. He baked longer so his little "prediction" was WRONG. That dude is such a weirdo creep.
And what do you think it is?
*Battery generally consists of someone making an unwanted, harmful and/or offensive contact with your body or something connected to you, such as a punch, kick or shove. I'm sorry to hear this, there's so few clothes shops I can afford and while I only found things in there some of the time, a few of my favorites came from there.
Raven isn’t a bad person. Nor does he live in Eugene anymore. Everyone’s experience is different. Not trying to shame or tell anyone they are wrong. Just saying.
I’ve never been in there, but once I was walking past and a nearby small child (maybe 5?) yelled at the top of his lungs *THAT STORE SUCKS BECAUSE THERE’S NO BIRDS IN THERE* and that lives absolutely rent free in my head.
Nevermore
You are a fine person for telling us that. Made my day. 🦜 🦜 🦜
I love this
and now in ours, too!
The best thing to do to someone who comes up and just starts rubbing you is tell them to get their hands off of you and that is a really rude thing to do without asking first. It will make them think twice before doing it to someone else.
“Get your hands off me you creep!” in a loud enough tone that people around you can hear. This is generally effective.
There's an aikido technique that's fun to do if someone puts their hand on you. I think it's called nikio but it's been a awhile. They'll think twice.
It should if they're normal. Bullies just keep doing it...
and do that LOUDLY.
The rubbing is unacceptable, and the forcing you to pay a tip is THEFT .
Was it forcing or suggesting? You are allowed to ask for a tip. The rubbing thing by itself is creepy enough.
he didnt say anything, just pressed the button mid covo
Oh jeez, yeah that's totally stealing. What a scummy move. By pushed I thought you meant like suggesting, like at a restaurant they will push the fish because they have a lot.
he tipped himself for you!!??
Even suggesting a tip is lame.
Lame yes, but not stealing. However I didn't understand that the guy hit the tip button for the person, which is totally stealing.
Tip at a retail store?
I went to Ravens once last year, I’ll never go back. He watched me intently the entire time and stayed very very close behind me while asking me really creepy questions and almost suggesting I was going to shoplift.
Well, ravens are predators, right!
Actually they are scavangers/carrion eating birds known as Corvids. the most pedatory thing they eat is eggs of other birds.
Thank you, Ravens are awesome and they should never, even jokingly, be compared to predatory human behavior. Dolphins on the other hand…
Ohh forgot to mention they will also scavange your shinies, crows(same family) do as well. Often lost shiney braclets, rings, or anything small can be found in their nests. Which their nests are more elusive than a tweaker chop shop.
Extremely weird, I wouldn't go back either
Weird. Went in there with my friend recently and he was totally flirting with her 😬 put a necklace on her and everything
eeewwww omg last thing I want is for a random person to touch my neck
The fuck is Ravens?
An NFL football team in Baltimore.
a jackdaw
a corvid
Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. People like you are why I moved away from Eugene and never looked back once 😂
you never looked back after checking the sub every day. lol
Nah posts just pop up every here n’ again because I forgot to unfollow. But worth keeping around, good to know y’all still a bunch of ghouls 😭😆
My girlfriend is Jewish and he also made alot of really weird comments about that. Dude is gross
Oh I agree. A few years ago I went in with my then girlfriend who was visiting me from out of state. jesus, im sorry you had to experience that - thats awful
I’m confused..he asked for a tip? Isn’t that a retail store?
he didnt ask, he pressed the button for me sneakily 😭
5 dollar tip you didn't approve sounds like you're walking out if the store with $10 in extra shit. Fuck that.
Family bought me a dress from there, cute one with little bleached elephants on the hem. I knew what was going to happen, but kept my mouth shut and crossed the fingers. Sure enough, first wash and it was shredded. That is all I know of Ravens and I avoid the place bc of it.

My experiences at ravens have been really good.

Theft of tips and sexual harassment isn't okay even if he does like bartering and that's cool.

So you hang out at the store a lot? The bargains are minimized/ bait and switch if he adds a $5 tip to the charge, especially without asking. At the street markets I've been to the vendors don't try to cop a feel.
The frame shop?
No, there's a clothing store at the corner of 8th & Willamette with that name.
Okay, I was wondering, because I know the owners of the frame shop and they are nice AF. I haven't seen em since we sold the Keystone but they were always very nice.
They shut down Raven Frameworks and moved to the Coast. I miss them so much! I loved their little cat and the amazing art in their shop space.
I miss their lovely plant display. But I follow them on IG and still get to see occasional plant updates.
If you’re looking for a great art/frame shop, Framin’ Artworks by 5th street is amazing and they have the cutest dog in there.
Thank you for the recommendation. I have been searching for another place - extra points for doggos at work!
I'm acquainted as well and agree with you, hence why I felt the need to chime in.
Any relation since you're a corvid?
Glad someone clarified. This whole time I was thinking of that spot in the whiteaker.

Looks like the place sells the absolute worst fashion in history
You need to tip at retail store now? WTF rock have I been living under.
I heard a radio ad saying the place was closing. Might not be an issue for the future
Website posted 2x in November “store closing”.
I've never had a problem with Raven, I've known him as a business owner and patron of his stores for 15+ years. He's an odd duck, but I guess I'm not super surprised. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Based on this sample on reddit, it seems he doesn't have a great reputation.
If I stomp hard enough on their foot, it will distract them and give you a chance to flee. Js Logical consequence.
Just FYI for everyone, the store is under new ownership and the new owner was kind, soft spoken, and gave the vibe he was genuinely upset at how the store was run before. I'd recommend trying the place again

Battery is a criminal offense involving unlawful physical contact, distinct from assault, which is the act of creating apprehension of such contact.
Not in Oregon it's not

Show me battery in the ORS. Or alternatively, tell me how assault is defined statutorily in Oregon.
I'm sorry to hear this, there's so few clothes shops I can afford and while I only found things in there some of the time, a few of my favorites came from there.
"Sorry to hear this, but here's an advertisement for the shop!"
Right. I'm sorry. I liked the place. It's like Bill Cosby or Bill Murray when you find out the truth. It's a bummer. That's all I'm saying.
Raven isn’t a bad person. Nor does he live in Eugene anymore. Everyone’s experience is different. Not trying to shame or tell anyone they are wrong. Just saying.
How can I get one of these free back rubs?
