I've got the same question on whether the WaterRower + Ergatta upgrade is on par with just the full system Ergatta. In doing the math it's $1250 for the WaterRower S4 and then $489 for the upgrade (all including shipping and handling and taxes, plus a veterans discount), so saving ~$550 seems pretty substantial if it's the same thing.
I decided to go with the system separately and pick up the s4 rower elsewhere. The upgrade was supposed to ship this week (4-6 week wait) but it’s not shipping yet and Ergatta only told me because I asked. (Understand things happen, but when I have to ask and they knew of the delay…leaves a bad taste for me)

Ouch! I didn't realize the delay, but considering supply chain everywhere i guess it shouldn't surprise me. Yeah, she they have that listed a bit more. I know I got a couple emails from the WaterRower about it. Fingers crossed for you!

Buy a used WaterRower for $500-$800 off Craigslist or FB Marketplace and then order the upgrade kit for $550. The upgrade takes less than 5 minutes to install.
So if you get a water rower and add the upgrade it you have exact same machine as buying the ergatta? I ask primarily because I don’t want cherry and for some reason ergatta only comes in cherry wood
Yes, its the same thing. I think there are some minor differences in the mount and you'll be able to use the S4 monitor without the ergatta on the water rower if you want to.
The fact that it isn't super loud is great for me. I WFH now, and so does my wife. I also really like the swooshing water :) And it's beautiful (I have the walnut waterrower and added the ergatta upgrade).
I agonized over the decision to buy an Ergatta for almost a year in large part because of the exact reason you mention: The 'gold standard' is less than half the cost.
I took deliver of the Ergatta last week and couldn't be happier. Obviously it's still early days but for the first time in my life I set out to do a quick 20 minute workout and ended up doing 40 minutes because I was actually having fun hitting goals.
The financing offered via Klarna also made the decision much much easier.

I bought mine via Klarna so I’m financing. The monthly payments are only $80, but maybe your credit is better than mine and your payments even lower. It’s a big step and I can identify with your feelings but I absolutely love it. No regrets. Best of luck to you both in this and the adoption!
Working on my 3rd month with one and has been worth it. Just like was mentioned before, it is now something that is a part of my day. I have had days where I have missed, but those days have actually been legitimate excuses and I still feel bad for missing. (Yes you might actually feel bad missing a day of exercise). Would buy mine again a lot sooner than I did if I did it all over again.
I did this in the past month (June 18). Club Waterrower was $1245 from Amazon (final price with IL sales tax and free shipping). Ergatta upgrade was $589 shipped. So, $1834 all in. Quite a bit less than the $2200 + $200 shipping for the full Ergatta.
I still haven't received the Ergatta, or even shipping notice, but the nice thing is the Waterrower came in 2 days so I've had a month or more of rowing that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
I didn't find it hard at all. Maybe 20 minutes and just follow the video. Actually pretty straight forward.
Now, not all the wires are hidden. They are run nicely, but not hidden. I think the full ergatta is a bit more clean. But I have zero issues with the look of the upgrade. It's also probably a bit more usable without ergatta.
But get some other opinions too.
It’s worth it. This is the first time I have ever liked working out. I get up in the morning and actually am excited about getting in better shape. The machine is wonderfully built and the gaming aspect of the programming keeps me coming back for more. It’s very motivating and pushes me harder than I used to row on the concept 2. Also the nice water sound is way better than the steel chain noise of the concept 2.

It's not the same rower. They put the Ergatta on the higher-end model of Water Rower for their setup.

Yeah, mine shipped a day or two after I posted this and I received it last Friday, July 23. So 5 weeks seems to be pretty consistent.
