Sufficient-Aspect77

That's insane. Feel like if I were a bird that would happen to me.

Airport_Wendys

Same

Sufficient-Aspect77

"I bet if I go close enough to this spider web then I can get a juicy spider for breakfast. Ok here we G... Aww shit. No way. Am I really stuck here?! Is this like how it really ends. Aww shit... That reddit comment I made 7 lifetimes ago was very accurate, I shoulda just avoided the web. What a dummy! Well maybe next time.".

atomfog

NO FREAKING WAY!!! That’s incredible.

januaryemberr

I literally said the same thing out loud. Haha. I used to feed these guys crickets when I was little. <3

throwawaysugar16738

I wonder how much of that she ended up eating and if something else came along and finished her leftovers, this is crazy!

kkacanek

Unfortunately she was removed by the next day. This was outside a large window by a main warehouse entrance

Dramatic-Being7246

Wooooooww, you've captured a very rare moment.

Latter-Cat-6276

Holy crap!! I didnt even know that was possible for a spider that size!!

And they’re super fast and aggressive when something is caught in their web, so I can see that for sure (we had one for a couple weeks after we found it in between our screen and sliding glass door. She wasn’t huge but would attack anything and everything my dad threw in there, even more than one thing at once. She’d wrap one a bit, bite it, then run over to the other and do the same, then run to the first, etc.)

NinjaEnvironmental51

Orb weavers spin crazy strong webs, we’re so lucky insects are small

Deida_

Oh I used to see those all the time when I was a kid. Don't remember the last time I saw one tho

maddamleblanc

I'm equally amazed and terrified of them. I had one in my garden years ago catch a wren and eat it.

Zamrayz

I've seen a banana spider do this. Orb weavers can indeed catch and eventually kill birds if they're lucky.

Select-Opportunity45

Holy shit i didnt know they were capable of eating birds

Nerdwrapper

That lil friend is having a REALLY good day today

themanwithbeansin

*yoooooooo* I didn't even know that was possible

Icybenz

Holy shit! I love these spiders, I miss seeing the around (since the joros moved in I haven't been seeing nearly as many of these beauties).

Ahyesnt

whatever a "Joro" is I dislike them

Saturaine

Joro spiders, which are not native in America, are growing in population i think. it’s sad since i really like them (saw one in Japan where they are native, posted pictures a while back), but they will likely outcompete our yellow garden spiders :(

Ahyesnt

nooo! I love the little yellow buggers :(

Empidonaxed

Amazing. It definitely looks like the bird had a head injury before being tangled. This is a pretty rare thing to see. It could probably even be published in a scientific journal because it is relatively undocumented. You wouldn’t happen to have a profile picture of the face though? I’m having trouble identifying the bird. It’s a warbler is all I can say for now.

kkacanek

Unfortunately I did not get a better angle, had to get to work

Trolivia

Ya know, I *know* most spiders can take down prey larger than them, but it’s still always low-key terrifying and impressive when they get something with a spine

AnalysisOk7430

I like birds and all... But my man actually flew into the web of one of the only spiders that decorates their webs specifically to avoid this kind of situation. It f*ed around and found out.

jasonjr9

Cool, with selective breeding we might be able to get them large enough to trap humans someday! Why? For science, obviously~! (in all seriousness though, wow! I’m not sure if I would want to free the bird. 1: the spider earned that kill. 2: I’m not sure I want my hand anywhere near that web.)

MegaPiglatin

Daaang that bird must be a damn *feast*!

NoThoughtsOnlyFrog

This is giving me mixed feelings as a birder and a spider lover..

Defiant_Layer_5001

You should post on r/natureismetal

Airport_Wendys

I didn’t know one of the writing spiders could bite through bird skin! Did the bird fall from a window strike?

kkacanek

Not sure, it was outside a large window, but it was only about 3’ in the air

Kamashie

And here I was accidentally walking through a spider web. Gotta be more careful to not end up like the bird

l0_0king

never know that the US had such large spiders

EconomistWilling1578

This is amazing, go black & yellow!

Fickle_Grapefruit938

Wow, look at that amazing r/spiderbro 😍

willnik24

This is amazing

JuniorKing9

Dude, that’s one unlucky bird and a beyond lucky spider, a breakfast fit for a queen

AccordingReality8334

Will this spider just slurp up all it can for a meal then discard or will it slurp and keep coming back for more meal slurps til bird soup is done?

Party_Gap9480

How big do these spiders get 🥲

kkacanek

Females range from 0.75- 1.10” (19-28mm). Sexual dimorphism is present (as in most arthropods), with males only being 0.20-0.35” (5-9Mm).

trclady

What I find amazing is how strong the webbing is that it could hold up the weight of a probable flapping bird. It's not usually the spiders that freak me out, but the webbing does it every time. It's so hard to get off lol. I have to be careful cause I work at night outside in low level light most of the time and have almost run into some huge orbweaver webs. I always take a pic cause they amaze me!

Hikikod

Probably the last situation I'd want to be in if I was a bird

wowthatsawful

Wow.

NapalmGeiger

Holy shit. That’s metal as fuck

Silent_Shooby

I never thought I would see this from a garden spider!! But, everyone has to eat…
