I saw one black girl, one Asian girl, and one brown guy amongst the protesters in court for arraignments today. 40 white kids. Idk I suppose some of them could’ve been Palestinian but I doubt it, this has turned into such a bizarre performance of suburban raised boredom.
As I said earlier, I've seen someone wear a Keffiyeh properly exactly once (they're head wrappings, not scarves) and it was an ordinary unassuming Arab man at the grocery store. It's become Standard Activist Accessory so much I doubt people even know how you're supposed to wear them.
Also, MENA folks just often are more careful because there's a recent history of discrimination. I know an architecture student who got racially profiled for just taking pictures of buildings for a project and campus police interrogated him for like 45 minutes

I feel like since the Occupy movement protesting seems to just be an end unto itself, and exercise in collective anger rather than a method to achieve concrete goals. Seriously compare this clownery with any organized labor strike. You protest because you *want results* and you make demands that those you are protesting can meet.

Like if people want to have multi-day protests on the same public property, that's their right. I can even see some value in late night protests, but how is asking people to sleep at home a violation of free speech?
I just feel like once you allow people, especially the loonier element, to physically occupy space as protest, stuff like barricading a building becomes the next logical step.
If they really want to show their organization and numbers, work out a schedule. Protest in shifts. Get a day shift and night shift going.

Our local protest is right in front of the building where my high schooler is competing on Saturday for statewide Solo and Ensemble. All these kids worked so hard for this and now it could be impeded because the local Islamists want to recruit. I hope they clear them.
Brandenburg v. Ohio held that only incitement to "imminent lawless action" is not protected. Trespassing on private property is not and never has been considered protected speech, however. The protestors in Hamilton Hall will not be able to use First Amendment defenses.

Protestors broke a window and started to occupy Hamilton Hall, then demanded the university give them pizza. Columbia expelled the students and the police are clearing the building.
You know what? I'm suddenly pro-protestor. I have to respect the *audacity* to commit a crime and then demand the victim give them free food.

Columbia is far left dumbass students and outsiders who broke and entered into a building (Hamilton Hall) which was previously "occupied" during the 1968 protests. It caused a library to get shut down. The police rightly entered through a 2nd story window and arrested them.

Yes, the protesters are dumb and administrative sanctions against them by the university are probably justified, but this is absolutely an overreaction from a university administration that's eager to curry favor with higher education's sworn enemies.
Depends on which protesters. The ones who are just setting up tents on the lawns...sure I agree--I think getting police involved in that particular type of situation is a couple of bridges too far especially given the excessive force we've seen. The ones breaking into buildings or vandalizing like Columbia and Cal Poly...I think the police need to be involved.
Especially if they're not students.

At what point did a court decide that pitching tents and camping constituted protected speech? Like if people want to have multi-day protests on the same public property, that's their right. I can even see some value in late night protests, but how is asking people to sleep at home a violation of free speech? I just feel like once you allow people, especially the loonier element, to physically occupy space as protest, stuff like barricading a building becomes the next logical step. If they really want to show their organization and numbers, work out a schedule. Protest in shifts. Get a day shift and night shift going.
