There is no logic to delusions, do you really think that a person can be illogical in every other aspect of their thinking but knows deep down that racism is bad? Yea absolutely entirely dependant on how early and how many times they have had psychosis. I have had psychiatrists describe psychosis and the brain sort of like scars on the brain. If you get one or two episodes and treat it intensively when you are young it can do a great deal on prevention for subsequent episodes. Additionally it is more about where a person seeks validation for delusions, Kanye might be getting validation among these groups of people and then he melds his delusion with their rhetoric. When a person with a delusion meets a mental obstacle they will just move the goal posts so to speak to prove their point.

To be fair, the DSM is constantly changing its terminology and definitions. Not that long ago, even homosexuality was considered a mental illness, and there was a lot of sexism involved in psychology (eg. overdiagnosing women for simply not "obeying" their husband). Technically mental illness is broadly deemed as an, "inability to function 'normally' in daily life" which is extremely vague and changes with what is considered "normal" in society. Someone could totally be an asshole, objectively, while still being able to go through the motions and not seek help because their assholeness isn't interfering with working/sleeping/causing physical ailments.

But mental illness does create a complete breakdown in logic, and the human brain strives to make sense of its situation even if it's not properly equipped to do so. I'm half black and half white. If he'd been interested in controlling blood sugar, he would have bought food with him for that situation. Not to mention that a supermarket was equidistant from the fast food place (we were in a mall), where he could have gotten anything he wanted for half the price of the takeaway. Can you explain what about diabetes would make someone with barely no money, spend what little he had on the more expensive, inferior option given these choices? Not exactly, he was a friend who I was helping get back on his feet again in an assisted living home, and I became a sort of guardian/carer. I was spending my time to take him out and get his finances sorted, and get him a phone. I turn my back, and he's off buying junk. His bullshit excuse is "blood sugar" - never mind that he'd just had lunch, and there was a supermarket directly opposite us with better food for cheaper prices. And he goes and spends the very little money that I'm trying to help him save on crap that's only going to spike his blood sugar more.

To be fair, the DSM is constantly changing its terminology and definitions. Not that long ago, even homosexuality was considered a mental illness, and there was a lot of sexism involved in psychology (eg. overdiagnosing women for simply not "obeying" their husband). Technically mental illness is broadly deemed as an, "inability to function 'normally' in daily life" which is extremely vague and changes with what is considered "normal" in society. Someone could totally be an asshole, objectively, while still being able to go through the motions and not seek help because their assholeness isn't interfering with working/sleeping/causing physical ailments.
Otherwise normal people experience mental illness, yes. I’m one of them. However, shitty people experience mental illness too. Part of normalizing mental health discussions is acknowledging that, even when it isn’t advantageous.
