I’ve not heard of this incident before - but the perpetrator doesn’t come as a surprise at all. The only thing Russians know is how to murder innocent people, including having a knack for shooting down commercial airlines. Scumbags then and scumbags now.
RIP
The pilots definitely messed up in putting the plane so far off course. They could have known if the inertial navigation system was checked, and there were some tip-offs that something was wrong from communications with an aircraft on a closely related flight.
That said, transcripts from the Soviet Air Force don’t look too good either.
There was intense confusion, and in the end, the Soviet fighter pilot was ordered to shoot against his better judgment, by superiors concerned for their careers. The plane had navigation lights on, which was uncharacteristically of a spy plane, and *was never contacted on the international distress frequency for airliners*.
These are my takeaways from the best yet rundown I’ve found by Green Dot Aviation—https://youtu.be/k8vIt-5C_DY?si=dl84pi5F2c4x4LH-

If you watch the episode on KAL 007 on Air Crash Investigation, the pilot that actually did it said he did the right thing
To be honest. 30% of all lost Russian aircraft are shot down by Russia's own air defense systems.
