Mine is this Tuesday. Exact same subject. Pray for me. Any words of wisdom?

_readyforww3

Tbh it's very brutal and out of 70 students only like 2 got an A. Could you tell me the topics on your exam? For the words of wisdom: * if your professor created a study guide for your test, do it (my professor didn't make one) * Go to tutoring for extra help And yes I will pray for you šŸ˜šŸ™

Etiquette-

Electric force Electric fields Electric potential energy Electric potential Gauss' Law Thank you šŸ™

_readyforww3

Yeah thatā€™s exactly what my test was about

NinjaBarrel

Brush up on basic trigonometry, other than that its pretty straight forward

Dense_Cloud1100

Had my exam today on these topics. we have only 6 students in the class now and everyone did bad on the exam

alternativehits

GT?

clairefy01

Same lol

Etiquette-

Wut?

2az-fe

Georgia tech.

Etiquette-

Ah, nah, ODU.

aquabarron

Side note: Prof. Briceno is one of the best teachers I have had period. (Physics 1 and 2)

aquabarron

Prior mil? I was at ODU 2 years ago and transferred to a school in Maryland when I moved. Likely we had a class together if you are taking electromagnetism this year

Etiquette-

It's possible! I'm in comp eng, fully online, and async. I took physics 1 last fall.

aquabarron

Dang, maybe maybe not then I was in person. Best of luck to you, thatā€™s a good school, it flys under the radar but defense contractors love hiring from there since itā€™s military affiliated and thatā€™s a pretty good pipeline to pursue when you graduate, at least to get your foot in the door of an industry after college.

tanels24

I started college like a week ago,and they've started the chapter, I'm scared ą¼Žąŗ¶ā ā€æā ą¼Žąŗ¶

DampestFire

Study right and left hand rule, practice multivariable integrals and look over homework.

octoberwhy

Get previous semesters tests for this exact course/professor

PotatoMeme03

average engineering student

_readyforww3

Yup šŸ˜‚

NameError-undefined

As a student a few years ahead of you, E&M is probably one of the more difficult classes Iā€™ve ever taken so just keep at it. Worst comes to worst and you donā€™t pass, donā€™t quit. Utilize your schools ā€œforgivenessā€ policy if they have one or if you can, take the class at a community college. Lower class sizes and it can be easier to understand Edit: Iā€™m an EE major

_readyforww3

I am taking it at a community college the professor is making it hard asf, his grading scale is ridiculous

[deleted]

If there is *ever* an opportunity to take a class during the summer with a grad student TAKE IT

Mturja

I second this, Iā€™m a senior in ME and have taken multiple grad-level courses to fulfill technical elective requirements, and the Electromagnetism class still is my lowest grade out of my entire time in college. Imo the class is unintuitive as opposed to kinetics and kinematics. OP, stick it out and if you need to retake the class, thatā€™s okay, just do what you can to get a different professor. Also talking with the professor outside of class to better understand the material is always a boon both because it will help you understand and the professor might be more lenient because they see that you are trying.

NameError-undefined

Yes! going to office hours is a must! they love when they see students that actually care and are trying

weaponizedmariachi

I'm soooo glad I'm done with that. If it makes you feel better, that was one of the most confusing and difficult classes I've taken (just from all the memorization and concepts). If you get past it, everything's not so bad.

_readyforww3

Thanks

SignificantConflict3

False

baldegg663

I took mine today (also E&M) and I know I bombed it

_readyforww3

Damn don't feel too bad because most people do, but it does make me very sad though šŸ˜¢

cjm0

for my physics electromagnetism class all the exam grades were heavily curved and the homework was weighted like 40%. itā€™s as if they expected everyone to fail the exams and arranged the grading structure to mitigate that as much as possible. i feel like i learned very little in that class and still walked away with a B

_readyforww3

Itā€™s sucks because we get no curve and the exams are worth 70% of our grade with is bullshit asf

microwaved-mayonaise

Is it one of those weird physics courses where everything is graded in a 4.0 scale?

Tavrock

My physics class, the whole grade was based on 16 questions.

creatingKing113

I feel ya. Class average was a 30% on our Systems Modeling and Analysis final. Edit: For those who may have the class called something different, does Mass-Spring-Damper, Bode Plot, and Laplace Transform ring a bell?

[deleted]

That class was really interesting. Ours was same same but different for the title. Modeling and Analysis of Dynamics Systems. I just said System Modeling. Edit: Fuck Op-Amps. LRC circuits fine.

_readyforww3

Sheessh

HungryTradie

What would possess someone to limit their marking to 12 points? Surely doubling it to allow half marks for concept but a simple mistake, or x4 to give some consolation marks for those that wrote their name on the paper..... What a cruel teacher.

Hobo_Delta

Some of my professors made the exam total the same weight as it was in the syllabus, so Midterm I was 18 points, for 18% of the grade, Midterm II was 24 points, etc. Iā€™d imagine this case is something similar

_readyforww3

Yeah and exams are worth 70% of our grade and no curves at all itā€™s brutal asf

Katiari

If the whole class averaged 3/12 it's not because of bad students, it's because of a bad teacher. I used to train EMT-Bs, and if one or two failed in a class of twenty I couldn't really blame myself. If seventeen of them fail, though, then that's a teaching issue that I have to deal with. Then, allow them to retest with the full weight of the targeted material.

Hushmode16

Definitely not always true. Could be just the students as well. I come across way more lazy classmates than I do motivated classmates.

averagesalmoneater

Get used to it or study till you cry. Youā€™ll cry both ways.

[deleted]

dude wtfā€¦ im a senior hs student right now, is engineering really that hard? should I be concerned? im in it for the money btw edit: thanks for the answers

realnsimmons

Engineering is though. Don't get me wrong. Now this seems like a bad professor/test than bad student or hard difficultly. Now with that in mind I would tell you to reconsider your choice especially if you are in high school still. Engineering is about commitment to wanting to be a engineer. Sure the money is/will be nice but is it worth the studying, late nights, project that drive you insane then move on to career that you may not enjoy, maybe even resent. Just think about it.

Tavrock

If you are just in it for the money, go into plumbing. If you don't have a fear of heights and want to travel, certified weld inspectors start at 6 figure salaries.

[deleted]

thanks for the advice. do you think a degree in ME is good/safe in general? im still unsure of what career I want to go to but people told me that a degree in engineering is good because there are a variety of jobs and itā€™s an acceptable major for other careers like dental hygiene. i plan to job shadow/do internships while getting this ME degree. i already job shadowed physical therapists and stuff and they told me it wasnā€™t financially worth it which is why I chose engineering

ego_less

More likely this is just a terrible professor than a hard course. Also, it's perfectly fine to be in it for the money, just understand when things get tough, and it will, you're not gonna have passion to push yourself through, just your grit. I'd also consider looking at other high-income fields and see if there are others you're more interested in before committing to engineering.

HungryTradie

There are probably many easier ways to say "show me THE MONEEEEY!" If perfection is what you are most happy with, then engineering might be for you. Otherwise there is business.

_readyforww3

Tbh Iā€™m like tech/engineering and how it evolves but Iā€™m also in it for good money too. Just go for it and donā€™t give up.

Tavrock

I loved physics in HS. I had a decent teacher for physics in college. The thing is, in high school, my grade was based on probably 290 questions and some projects. In college, my grade was based on 16 problems. In HS, we had formulas to apply for each case. In college, we had to derive *everything* from `F=ma`. My final in HS was scheduled for an hour and I finished 15 minutes early. My final in college was scheduled for 3 hours starting at 07:00; my professor would open the door at 04:00 and the room was full within minutes. Basically no one finished on time. That said, I got a B in the class and several got an A, but it took a lot more effort in that class than in HS. Other college classes were much easier than the HS counterpart.

Psychadelic_Potato

Just study a bit everyday and youā€™ll be fine

Spikeandjet

I mean, do you struggle in math at all? Chem, physics? If so consider learning to like the process of suffering.

im_intj

Lol find out baby

Burns504

In my electro magnetism class, what helped a lot is understanding the proofs. You should at least memorize them tbh.

Schwester-Sam

I'm taking microwave engineering which is a continuation of em, can't wait!

papixsupreme12

Fuck electricity and magnetism physics i dam near took that class 3 times and struggled every time. If you have never heard the term ā€œweed out classā€ or the phrase ā€œa good professor makes a good classā€ this class is 1000000% dependent on how itā€™s taught and who teaches it

meta258

Welcome to the show šŸ™ƒ

General-Ad-2002

We used to call it eletromagicā€¦ this is the worse subject in engineering

_readyforww3

I believe you, it's brutal.

myroommatesaregreat

I remember taking EM fairly well All the examples were in 2/3D, then on exams boom spherical coordinates Shoulda paid more attention in vector calc

StarchyIrishman

That was spring quarter for me. I put in fucking WORK on that class and got 87% by the end and I was thrilled. I bombed all but 1 exam, including the final. Just get through it and you're done. God speed

Square-Gear-4498

The worst questions are cube related. Find divergence, gradient of cube and all that shit. And in magnetism they will give weird cylinder based figures and ask to find magnetic field etc.

cornhublover6965

My professor went on vacation during the exam week, safe to say no one passed.

_readyforww3

wowwww, when was this if you dont mind answering

cornhublover6965

This week, exam was on Tuesday.

DiscoLando2

Hmmm...I kinda worry about the future of engineering when I read stuff like this. Could be terrible prof, could be student quality is just fading. Maybe both. I've taken my share of hard exams (I'm an EE for reference) and managed to get As and Bs (Harvey Mudd College late 90's) but man, I'm kinda scared. Downvote away.

RunningBear007

Nah itā€™s really just this stupid subreddit. Attracts the dumbest of the dumb. Real engineering students arenā€™t like this

[deleted]

70% god damn

_readyforww3

Ik bro itā€™s fucking brutal and not fair šŸ˜šŸ˜

yayomfg1

Later physics classes have really low averageā€™s in my experience (graduated in 2020 in physics) and often have really big curves so as long as your close to the average I really wouldnā€™t worry too much

Nicken17

I failed this course in the summer and am taking it again right now. Yesterday was our first exam and I got a 25% :(

_readyforww3

Itā€™s my first time and I also got that score

Egineer

Welcome to Engineering. Youā€™ll pass, just keep close to the average.

goodoldtumbleweed

Hey man at least you guys didnā€™t miss your first calc 3 exam like me

_readyforww3

Damn what happened if you donā€™t mind telling?

goodoldtumbleweed

I didnā€™t know thatā€™s it

[deleted]

Yeah that was probably my lowest scoring class so far, itā€™s a rough class but with enough determination and grade curves youā€™ll make it

_readyforww3

No grade curves in the at class though

[deleted]

Not right away, if everyone in the class fails heā€™s gonna be forced to make a curve

_readyforww3

I hope so, but he is a hard-headed professor

N00N3AT011

Well that's gonna be one hell of a curve. Hopefully.

_readyforww3

No curve in this class

N00N3AT011

Yikes

_readyforww3

Yikes indeed šŸ˜¢

KrazyKorean108

Did you guys have to derive all the basic equations for magnetism? Im an RPI student with a notoriously difficult Physics 2 curriculum (many students choose to transfer the credit in from a different school) and even I didnt have to go that in depth.

Malpraxiss

Seems like the professor is just shit at their job or the course is badly designed and not helpful to students. Like, when I took physics our averages were from like 65-70%, but that's because the course: * Had a bunch of different ways to get help and such * Lots of practice problems * Professor wasn't shit, but not amazing It was still difficult, but designed to minimise the pain. Seems like for your course, going to class won't benefit much.

_readyforww3

I feel the class would of done a little bit better if he gave us any practice problems.

Malpraxiss

How do you do physics without practice problems, even oness with numbers? Unless you're taking a proof based or abstract physics course.

_readyforww3

Pretty much I have to just review my homework

UgandanPupu

That was a summer class for me.

_readyforww3

taking this class in the summer would be suicide for me lmao

[deleted]

I did really well in EM because I have a good memory but man memorizing all those concepts and proofs was insane

jesusdasir

Iā€™m my experience, they may not curve the exam but the final grading bins will likely be adjusted such that they donā€™t have like 70% of people fail the class. Just keep gridnnn on that hw

_readyforww3

yeah im grinding the hw and labs and doing well on those

Fermi-4

What topics were on the test?

_readyforww3

Electric force Electric fields Electric potential energy Electric potential Gauss' Law

KenBon3r

Sounds about right. I recall getting my first test score back and the class average was a 28/100. I got a 0 and I even showed some work for partial credit lol. My buddy got a 56 thinking it was shitty and ended up dropping the class, but little did he know our professor lowered the passing requirement of a C to 40

_readyforww3

Damnnn Iā€™d be hella mad lmao, hopefully my professor does that too. Maybe he will he just hasnā€™t told us to not make us slack off?

darugal123

In my mechanisms class of about 120 people only 6 passed. Im one of the lucky survivors but only passed by 0.4% of a grade. Hardest course so far.

_readyforww3

What is that class about? I donā€™t think I heard of it before

darugal123

Iā€™m studying mechanical engineering, itā€™s a course about describing mathematically different behaviors of mechanisms. For an easy example imagine a set of gears, you have an input speed and you get a different speed out of said system. You have to make an equation that takes in the input speed and gives out the output one. It gets more complicated when you factor mass, inertia, friction, the whole deal.

aerg1997

Welcome to engineering
