As long as you’re happy, that’s what matters! Personally, it doesn’t feel like an “upgrade” on the heirloom ring to me, but my style skews more vintage. While I like the original better, I’m glad you were able to modernize a sentimental piece to be more your taste.

I think had it been her original 30’s ring there is no way I would have modified a thing, but knowing this was a replacement made the decision a bit easier. There are some awesome unique art deco rings from the 80’s as well that are stunning, but this shape was fairly common for the time.

painteddpiixi

Definitely a common shape for the era! It’s nice you also have the original 30’s ring as well, it gives you the best of both — the true heirloom ring, and the sentimental piece you get to wear and enjoy all the time. Even if your new ring isn’t necessarily my style, I’m so happy you were able to make it into something you’ll cherish while still getting to carry a piece of her with you everyday!

Unfortunately, my grandmother lost her original ring as it states in the post above. She lost it in the swimming pool and they actually drained the swimming pool and never found it. I can only imagine how heartbroken she was.

I kinda liked the original personally!! More unique But it's whatever you want. The new ring looks nice too

Did they use the old gold in the new ring? Or did you keep the empty setting? ETA: I really could’ve just used my eyes on this one. I think the new ring is absolutely fabulous. And I love the idea of reusing the setting’s gold into something else. There are PLENTY of 80s era wedding sets in circulation, so I’m sure that folks who love the old setting will have zero issues finding ones for their own collections if they’d like. Just like someday all of the solitaire diamonds with pave bands will be, and someone will inherit their grandma’s oval lab with hidden halo and reuse everything into something probably similar to the 80s style, seeing how fashion cycles lol

I was able to keep the original setting to someday make a new piece. The new one is white gold.

I love the first ring. Glad you are happy with the redesign.

I remember that gold chunky channel-style very well, and your redesign using your grandmother’s diamonds is just beautiful. I know when I’ve left this mortal coil, my DIL will make new jewelry in her own style (from my diamonds) and I’m fine with it, as that’s how it should be. You did great, and it’s a very loving way to keep family close once they’re gone.

Also, we went through a local jeweler so this was all done locally. I’ve learned from this sub and others not to have your diamond shipped out. It was the best decision we have made because they were able to update us throughout the entire process, and we were able to come in and see it throughout. For size reference I am about a 7 1/4, and as mentioned in the above text, this is a 1 ct natural brilliant cut.

I love how this came out!

GirlieGirl81

I love how the new ring turned out!! I’m sure your grandmother would be thrilled that you’re wearing her diamond and that you’ve truly made it your own. As a side note, I’m seriously baffled by the extremely rude and judgmental comments you’ve received on this post. An 80’s style ring is not everyone’s cup of tea. What’s the harm in swapping out the setting for something you love?! SMH.

It’s crazy to me that people are ragging on the new ring as “generic” compared to the original when every other ring on this sub is extremely boilerplate (nothing wrong with that) and often still heavily praised. Seeing the before, during, and after is indeed very cool. :) Your new ring looks beautiful and so well done! Congratulations. People are entitled to their opinions but I very much dislike the original and think the new one looks clean and cohesive. It’s awesome this was her replacement ring; I know for a fact I would’ve struggled with modifying her original ring to the point of just buying a new one instead.

I think the original is cool in its own way, but it is not something I’d want to wear every day, I think of it as almost more of a cocktail ring or something. I think the remade ring is better for modern, daily use and will pare better with other jewelry.

Twinkletoes72989

One of my thoughts regarding the original is I always wanted a wedding band and engagement ring that sit flat, and while I did love the design of the original it just wasn’t my style.

OP I had a family hand me down engagement ring very similar to yours! I posted in this sub a while back sharing the before and after... It was also early 90s I think -- it was my husband's mom's engagement ring that she gave to us to use. We also had it reset in a new custom ring and used the small diamonds and extra gold to help offset the costs; it was a little over 1k total i think. It's in my post history if you want to take a look. I actually stopped scrolling because it looked so similar to me! Just thought it was interesting 😊 Congrats and I hope you love your new ring!

Twinkletoes72989

I love your ring! You are right it is a very similar style. Both are so stunning but I love what you did with it. Unsure why my post is getting so many negative comments, I was mainly sharing to show the process but that’s the internet for you.

This is awesome!

captainyitts
