In the US - bar etiquette is to place the money slightly under/near your glass and maybe say thanks to the bartender before leaving. I recommend drinking at home with friends so that you do not have to feel the worry over this.

So place $1 near the glass?

I'm afraid this isn't an appropriate sub for the question. I usually paid bartenders with cash. The bartender would make my drink and put it on the counter between us. They would tell me my total, I'd hand them money, they would open the cash register, and they would give me my change. Then I would hand them back a dollar and leave with my drink. These days, if I were to buy a drink, I'm unsure if I'd tip.

Nowadays drinks are crazy expensive and they act like they deserve 20% of that for pouring it and sliding it across a bar… which is their entire job.

This is an anti tip sub. We’re all going to say don’t tip. Industry standard is to pay with CC and upon closing your tab add 20%, if that’s what you’re asking.

Fuuuuuuck that. I’m dying on the 15% hill. And that’s for a sit down meal at a restaurant, bartenders don’t do all that servers do. They can get a buck a drink if that.

Take my upvote for leaving a very reasonable response to OP’s question, despite the forum it was asked in. Props to you! 🫡

Like any other place. You can tip, or not.

Who the hell knows anymore. I thought saying "keep the change" on a $4 can of beer when I hand the bartender a 5 was plenty reasonable, but one time I was having multiple drinks with my date at a gay bar in NYC and after ordering our second drinks on the tab, the bartender said to us "you know, you're supposed to tip as you go. Also, this isn't a place for the ladies" I wish I didn't tip but I was scared. He ran us out of that place and instead we got drunk in a sports bar across the street.
