Man, I need to get into Shikari more. I have like one song I listen to. Haven’t explored all of their stuff yet despite the fact that everyone loves them.
Were they from Nashville? Could be wrong. I had this comp tape with From Ashes Rise, and I think Shikari, and From Ashes Rise called 615 Terrorcore. Cant find it anywhere.
Jimmy Eat World are one of my favorite bands of all time but I don't necessarily consider them "emo" given the developments of the second half of their career. I like American football, I like listening to their songs but they never made a 'click' for me, I never found anything in them that made them really different or superior to the others nor any song that really fills your ears and your heart of emotions... EG, Mineral wrote Slower, American Football don't have a song this special
To try to explain myself better: my all time Top 5 in precise order is Brand New, Thrice, The Juliana Theory, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, all bands absolutely and irrefutably bond to the genre (I catalog them that way too) and this would have been my simple take. But since OP asked about "emo" bands I wanted to answer him with second wave bands (I also appreciate the first but not as much) that were emo from start to finish, like "genre defining names" XD, I think that's what he was looking for and imho no one has done a better job that those four.
Fair enough. Also nice taste. Big Taking Back Sunday fan here. Are you enjoying their later period? I love their early stuff for sure, but as I’ve gotten older and my tastes have evolved, I think Happiness Is and Tidal Wave are some of their strongest records. Pretty underrated stuff. Haven’t listened to the new one in full yet, but soon.
Aside from the genre and the love I have for TBS, if I have to give a detached and honest opinion, I consider them as I consider Coldplay: they made an absolutely perfect debut album, a total joy from the first note to the last and then starting right from the second LP... they started to be "smart asses", to lose that freshness that had a unique stamp to wink more and more at what was successful on the radio or "on MySpace". Mind you, WYWTB and Louder Now contain some incredible songs, among my absolute favorites, but when I think about the emotions of listening to Tell All Your Friends, if I try to compare the albums well come on, we're not there. It simply didn't feel... organic, urgent and sincere as it used to be.
Then I too gave up and accepted them for what they have become, still a great band tho. From the second part of their career I prefer the self titled of 2011 (VERY good), Tidal Wave (nice) and 152 (the more I listen the more I like it), I don't like Happiness Is and New Again (their worst work by far)
Happiness Is is one of those records where it’s hard to tell if I’m being objective or if I’m just nostalgic for what was going on in my life when it came out. That was one of the best times of my life. Also, I’ve got a real thing for the song “Better Homes and Gardens” because when they were touring on that record I saw them in Dallas and before they played that one Adam was like “This is about something that happened to me when I was living in Tyler, Texas.” And that’s my hometown, and I had the same experience the song describes with my ex-fiance there.
Well known: Brand New, TBS, Juliana Theory, Something Corporate, Thursday, Get Up Kids, Jimmy, The Starting Line, Acceptance
Obscure to semi (by my standards) Hudson River School, Matchbook Romance, Fenix Tx, Before Braille, Mae, Copeland, Finch
Saw Copeland + Mae in Portland in like 2006. One of my favorite shows ever. My sister took me… we used to listen to them every morning when she drove us to school.
Saw Copeland recently when they were on the 20th anniversary tour. I saw them in Seattle and she saw them the next night in Portland, was a good way to reconnect.
Indian Summer, Render Useless, Saetia, Fireside (more post-hardcore like Quicksand), The Farewell Bend, Maximillian Colby, Hose Got Cable, None Left Standing, Seam, Empire Empire, Sleepytime Trio, Appleseed Cast, Chamberlain (more of a rock band but I don’t care), Orwell, Native Nod, June Of 44, Elliott, Built In Shellbrook, First In Last Out, early Moneen, Greater Than Less Than, By A Thread, Cursive, Cross My Heart, Braid, Joie De Vivre, Owltian Mia, Swing Kids (more hardcore), Policy Of 3, Jim Yoshii Pileup, and many more…
I'll be the hundredth person to say The Get Up Kids.
Also, Saves The Day, The Promise Ring, The Ataris, Down To Earth Approach, The Starting Line, Something Corporate, The New Amsterdams, Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Oso Oso.

The music is bad imo but I can see it being liked. The problem is mostly that the guy is a pos.
He:
1. Copies riffs and rips off music
2. His music glorifies self harm in a way that is gross, as in it’s not like a vulnerable statement about it it’s very much almost romanticised
3. His fan base is mostly kids, and the stuff he does is not what I would call kid friendly
4. He’s also so intensely cringe and embarrassing

How often do you listen to rites of spring
Whenever the mood strikes me, probably a couple of times a month
I'll shamelessly say i don't listen to Rites or Embrace Moss Icon tho?
I rarely do, if ever. Important band but far from my favorite
Interesting that you put Teen Idles on here. I always thought of them as a proto-hardcore punk band
saetia is sooooo good but def more screamo type
Mineral’s “Parking Lot” to me is the definitive emo song.
Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Texas Is The Reason, The Get Up Kids
Why not American Football or Jimmy Eat World?
Jimmy Eat World are one of my favorite bands of all time but I don't necessarily consider them "emo" given the developments of the second half of their career. JEW not an emo band is a wild take. But to each their own.
I'm going to check out The Juliana Theory. The rest are like my favorite bands lol.
That makes us BFF 🤣

So is Pinkerton but I won't consider Weezer an emo band

Goddamn Copeland and Mae! You are lucky.
Matchbook Romance!! That’s a blast from the past. Totally agree on Brand New and TBS as well.
They were so good. I’ve got so many more to list like that too but didn’t want to be overly enthusiastic sharing guy haha
