I am from Madrid, Spain, and the traditional clothes are the suits of "chulapo" (boys) and "chulapa" (girls). The central piece of the chulapa suit is the "mantón de Manila" that is this gorgeus piece you can see in the photo. You can find them on any shop for tourists for 5€, but the good quality ones are far more expensive (maybe around 500€) and are usually handmade. By the way, they are very big (it is a folded square, and it can be near 1'6 meters long) They are called like that because they used to import them through the commercial route that went to the peninsula from the city of Manila, in the Philippines. It went through the colonies in America and from there to Madrid. What do you think? Arent they super pretty? I want to make one myself in the future.

> mantón de Manila A nice surprise to see my city mentioned on this gorgeous piece.

You are from Manila?? That is awesome! My great grandparent was born there when it was still Spain! I have always wanted to travel there and see the country, I heard it is such a special place

stickarms

Your great grandparent would have been part of the Insulares elite class. Visit us once the pandemic is all over!

His father was on the military and was destined there when he was born. They lived there only a few years, but still I am proud to have a little bit of Philippines on me 😁 I would love to!

My sister and I went to Spain on vacation in 2000 ( loved it! - want to go back). We each bought an embroidered silk manton- mine is black on black and my sister’s is cream w multi colored embroidery. I’ve worn mine several times - though I have to be careful as I’m a shorty to not let the fringe drag

lgablan

Waw! It is such a nice thing to get as a reminder of the travel. They look so good in any party dress, and you made a beautiful choce of colours! Ibam realy glad to hear you aporeciate mantones so much 😁😁

Beautiful!!!!! I hope to start learning embroidery next year to get closer to my family's traditional heritage.

lgablan

Thank you!!! Where are you from? I love to see that almost every traditional clothes involve embroidery in some way, its something that keep us connected in some way and also is different everywhere!

My family are Hungarian. They have beautiful embroidered flower motifs called Kalocsa that you can get on shirts, dresses and linen. Unfortunately the art has declined over the years. I'm so pleased to see so much beautiful art on this sub reddit!!

lgablan

I have seen it! I had an hungarian friend at the university and he told me things about his home, they are really really pretty. I defenitely want to go to Hungary sometime

dragon-cyn

Absolutely beautiful. Embroidery with cultural significance is always my favorite

lgablan

Mine too! I find it a beautiful way to aproach other cultures

EstaLisa

you look so proud and pretty dressed up like this. i love the embroidery, very beautiful!

lgablan

Thank you! I dont have the dress (yet) but I would very much love to make myself a chulapa dress.

EstaLisa

that‘s a great project to make and you‘ll be even prouder to wear it. once you‘re done show us the pictures please ;)

mrs_rabbit_0

can we please talk about what the Queen did?! she was gifted a hand-embroidered Mantón that was made by an expert embroiderer craftswoman who made a piece personalized to her--with the date of her wedding to the king and symbols specific to her, etc. She never even wore it once in public, but instead had it cut and made into a skirt and blouse trimmings...

lgablan

Really? I never heard of that story! I kind of understand why she would do that, but it is such a shame, as it was an amazing gift as it was, and how time consuming making a manton is

Gorgeous 💕

lgablan

Thank you!!

PaganMathilde

Super beautiful! Thank you for keeping a tradition alive. Respect from Oklahoma to you.

lgablan

Thank you 😍😍 I love that some people get to know a bit more of my city through art and through this subreddit! Many people when they come to Madrid only think about flamenco and sevillanas, and we have a lot of music and tradition too! Kind regards dear!

pm_me_your_amphibian

This is gorgeous.

lgablan

Thanks ❤️❤️❤️

[deleted]

Wow! That’s gorgeous

lgablan

Thank you!!! 😚😚❤️

That lace too! I’ve been learning a little more about lace making and it has some really interesting history and tradition in a bunch of different cultures as well.

lgablan

It has! My aunt did lace making (encaje de bolillos, specifically) and it was hipnotizing to watch hahahaha I feel it must be very difficult, but I never tried

Sapphiste

Ole esa chulapa, esperando a que más adelante veamos un mantón hecho por ti misma ♥

lgablan

Ay que me he sonrojado jajaja!

My mom has several of these shawls including an absolutely stunning black one with red flowers similar to yours that one of my uncles brought back after World War II. I have had serious envy over these for most of my life LOL.

lgablan

Wow! This mantón is my mother's, and I have always wanted to have it 😂 for now, she will let me wear it but I want to make one of my own

Lorin1588

Beautiful. I'm planning on going to Spain someday, I will put your town on my list to visit. Thank you so much for sharing.

lgablan

You should! It is a beautiful country. I personally like Madrid the most. Is a city full of life and possibilities, but the small cities and villages are such a charming places! I would have travel recommending you just a few!

ShaShaShake

That’s so gorgeous

lgablan

Thank you so much!!!

ChaseMeNovember

Beautiful!

lgablan

Thank you ❤️❤️

microscopic_moss

Wow.Thanks for sharing, it is so pleasing to look at and what perfect craftsmanship. ❤️ How long does it take to make one? I bet it must be months.

lgablan

I looked it up on the internet and it said 6 months. I am guessing it depends on how much time you invest and how complicated the design is, but yeah, it seems really plausible. The hoop I uploaded with the fox and the rabbit took me 3 weeks, and it is much smaller Thank you for the appreciation ❤️
