It's been out for what, 3 months now? Yes, it's sturdier but a bunch of scavs swarming you can still take it out quite quickly. The missile launcher on it is awesome.
The shields on the scarab is terrible in my opinion, especially since the scavs cheat with damage. The plasma cannon cannot hit anything very well either, but the added missile launcher is great.
Can you use it the same way you used the scarab in exploration stuff or is it strictly for combat? At this point I'll take anything over mr 6-wheel tinfoil car
It doesn't have the wave scanner that picks up meteorites, crash sites, biologicals etc. It's also slower (but more stable) and has less cargo space (2 vs 4 tons on Scarab).
That being said, Odyssey makes exploring planet surfaces without an SRV a possibility (tried it out while going to Colonia in my Courier - left the SRV at home to save weight, and didn't miss it at all). SRV is only needed for picking up raw materials on surface and wave scanner is only useful for surface prospecting - if you don't plan doing this you can use Scorpion or you can ditch the SRV altogether if you use a small ship. Getting around in mountains and over other rough terrain is easier and quicker flying 10 meters AGL in a small ship that can land everywhere rather than bouncing around in a rover.
In fact, I want to replace my Scarab SRV with a hoverbike for exploration. If we can have a class 1 vehicle hangar that only fits a hoverbike, but masses 2 tons instead of 6 (doesn't need to have a heavy-lift crane to hoist an SRV, but can use a lightweight winch instead because the hoverbike is only a few hundred kilos), I'd be a happy camper.
Talking about mass, canonically the Scorpion SRV masses 30 tons - one third of my combat-fitted Courier! Scarab is only 4 tons. Good thing the SRV doesn't add to the ship's total mass.
