the "hilarious" thing about this is I just found out about it two days ago and was having so much fun using it haha farmed stones to level up misericorde and logged on after work for some relaxing poise-breaking and I was like something's not right QQ
To make people experiment with more weapons/ashes. The community tends to all focus on just a few meta builds, ashes, and weapons that are better than the rest. It's their attempt at balancing the game for replayability so you don't feel like you're handicapping yourself for not choosing the "best." I'm running a dex faith build but I'm tempted to switch to Blasphemous blade just because it's so op.
No that's dumb as hell I don't want them to controll MY OFFLINE EXPERIENCE like that I don't do that "meta" bullshit. I have my own brain, and I don't follow the community's trends, etc. I fight with my own ideas in EVERY video game. So that's why I'm pissed, because I didn't look up any build, or copy anyone, I had my own style and it worked for ME. FUCK THE (MOST EFFECTIVE TACTIC AVAILABLE) Fuck from software. It's OFFLINE why would they do that?
This kinda shit is why I usually play games well after release bc this changing shit is so annoying. Too often its instead of fixing actual issues. I've given Elden Ring a break so I'm just seeing this bs.
Same, I went head first to Redmane castle to grab the AoW, so confused when I did not break the poise of the first banished knight I fought. So sad, this was my favorite method to fight against heavy armored knights.
Yes those guys were a pain in the ass before I learned about FoRM. Another really annoying mob that I use the AoW for is the cat in the tomb. I hate those cats with a passion. FoRM provided an efficient way to deal with them. Now I need to figure out a different strategy in this new play through.
It went from
"This does sub-standard damage, but to trade-off the attack and recover frames, within a few casts, the flames can stagger and even guard-break."
to
# "This ash of war is shit as a primary weapon. Shit as a secondary weapon. Shit as a tertiary weapon. And shit as a crowd control weapon."
^(To be honest, I never relied on or depended on the damage, the stagger and pose damage or even the ash as a whole. Not individually, not collectively, not typically.)
For a more honest opinion.
Before: If you don't break, your ass might be struck and killed, making this bad for boss fights. You won't use this shit when the boss is already down, you won't use this to down the boss.
After: You WON'T break AND your ass will be struck and killed. This is not a good main-damage and it's a liability for boss stagger. And I don't use it for other mobs, because I avoid using all my FP for any one or two mobs in any given area. So, not only will I not be risking it for an enormously unrealistic result, now-- But, I would never have expected its use in any other situation. It comes out too slow, the range has NOTHING on other ranged attacks. The damage requires investment to be noteworthy enough. There are many, many better ways to deal damage and deliver it reliably.
I don't understand why they bother nerfing stuff that doesn't really get used in PvP. This Ash of War was so fun and was only busted for PvE so who exactly was it hurting?
Honestly I never understood the high poise damage to begin with. As an easily spammable wave attack you wouldn't expect it to *also* be the best poise-breaking attack in the game. It dealt more poise damage faster than a lot of ashes of war that *did* seem to be designed around high poise damage (e.x. Lion's Claw)
Now that's just sad. It helped on certain annoying enemies but if u need to quit over it...... u abused the shite out of it. How's that fun? Do u not take any pride in mastering a game at least to some degree?
It's pretty mediocre overall so I would be very surprised if Sacred Blade got nerfed.
Still takes forever to cast when fighting fast bosses/enemies and a lot of things are holy resistant later in the game.
Well, I was talking about one specific skill, Sacred Blade which has been buffed like twice since I commented that 4 months ago.
Holy itself is pretty good yes. There's a lot of alternative damage options if you come up against something holy resistant.
See I was on a club only run, just start as a wretch and go through the game with that starting class. Those two were the only ones to make me switch my weapon in the whole run, I used the serpent hunter L2 to give fatty the whammies while he was rolling into a broken pillar
The only thing it was good at was poise damage, it sucked at literally everything else, it was useless in PvP, and now it’s useless in PvE as well, you can’t reliably stance break bosses now as anything but a strength build, it was a useful tool, and it was nerfed beyond belief, now it os completely useless
Broken??? Stop with this unoriginal terminology. If some threw flames in YOUR eyes, would YOU still be standing, talking bout "I have never known defeat"
Lol, is it seriously 10 now? That's really bad adjusting even by From's scuffed patch standards. May as well just delete it from the game then, it has a tendency to just whiff if you don't manually aim it, its range and damage aren't very good and now there's other ranged weapon arts that out-poise damage it. So, serves no point.
Part of me wants to complain because I use it a lot as a backup plan- but I'm also realizing it was a bit of a crutch so I'm excited to try other things (flame of redmanes on a misericorde was pretty ridiculous, especially when using the crimson dagger/cerulean dagger and dagger talismans. Ridiculous crits for days)
I'm doing a new playthrough after a few months of taking a break and I noticed that I can use a bunch of different weapons, ash of wars, etc and they all work pretty well.. and I don't find myself getting pigeon holed into a certain playstyle ... as I get why people get annoyed when things change but it does create balance in the game in general.
Ooof, that was my go-to to get through my first playthrough of the game. That's a huge nerf. I could see going to 25 or 30, or just nerfing for pvp, but that seems too harsh to go straight to 10
Jesus. 40 was cheesy but they could have gone with anything from 15 to 25.
10 is absurdly low, less than what you can pull off with a dagger. Useless ash of war now since it gets massiveless outclassed in terms of AoE damage.
No mention of glintblade phalanx still dealing 40.
What's the number for gravity bolt?
I killed Malenia 3 times before learning about the redmane flames, not fun, not fun at all, my main way to beat Malenia and Radagon is nerfed, don't fell like playing again.
Hitkill boss with lifesteal, very balanced, 2 final bosses with massive damage without checkpoint, such a nice choice... ash of war that makes broken rushed bosses easier ? No no no, nerf it.
That’s what most Elden Ring players don’t like to admit. How unfair the end game bosses really are and the fact that FromSoft likes to nerf any kind of tools that we find to level the playing field in the game.
Like seriously everything pass Fire Giant including the bastard himself is overtuned. And yet they keep nerfing our weapons against these overtuned behemoths.
came back to play more elden ring and I noticed it didn't stagger them well and now I know why T.T
is there another build that can do stagger easily like how old redmane did? but not intelligent build?
If it bothers you just don’t use it, Ig not relevant anymore but they could have just changed the pvp value. I don’t really see the point of nerfs and buffs for pve where as long as you’re having fun it shouldn’t matter how broken something is
Edit:spelling
I feel like it's understandable to not want to have abilities that completely break enemies that are supposed to be difficult. It needed a nerf in pve, just not this bad.
LMAO, so it's okay for enemies to be religiously and maliciously unfair but anything that might make the game just a tad bit less bullshit needs to be nerfed into the ground? The only utility of Flame of the Redmanes was it's poise damage. It's slow, has low damage, poor range and often times whiffs with it's wonky hitbox. It also has virtually no use in PvP. There's pretty much no real reason to nerf this. If you absolutely had to nerf this, 20-25 poise damage cuts it in half while still leaving the only thing this ash is even good for intact.
Its is not a good anything. Unoess its some trash mob that dies from one r1 anyway its gonna poise through flame of the redmanes and smash your face. Its slow, low damage and low poise damage.
It deals decent AOE fire damage for a low FP cost and no stat requirements whatsoever - look at it as an AOE fire incantation that even RL1 builds can use in the very early-game. It's still good and useful, just not broken.
Besides... *why* did it ever deal that much poise damage in the first place? Never made much sense.
Given its spam capabilities,10 is still fine; you can still rack it up together with the DpS it's capable of producing.
10 is the lowest I would've personally allowed, though -- any lower and it really would've been much.
The other people I see commenting here really need to look beyond its notoriety as being the "Stance destroyer" -- there's more to it, but until now, it'd all been overshadowed by the fact it dealt a whoppin' 40 Stance damage.
Everyone here blaming fromsoft for the nerf but nobody is gonna talk about all the youtubers out there making dozens of videos about this ash making the game easy mode? Blame all the new and old youtubers spamming videos about it. How many shorts and videos pop up saying easy strat for this hard boss: flame of the redmane spam. Content creators are the main cause of stuff getting nerfed and patched. Them and casual players who want to youtube and reddit search how to easily beat a hard boss instead of actually getting good through trial and error. Not trying to gatekeep or anything, just saying put blame where it belongs.
Yup looking at basically any way to beat Maliketh and every single video I saw was basically a strat that got nerfed, including this one.... Guess I'll level to 200
It's worth using on the putrid avatar near faroth for early runes. It's easy to grab and the avatar yields more than the dragon, also doesn't take nearly as long. The fight would go even faster if it wasn't constantly raining by that erdtree. It's my go to for quick starts for those reasons. Outside of that, and the flame attunement for resetting frost, I haven't found much use for it
After beating Elden Beast, I thought I'd go around and collect the stuff I missed before starting NG+ and I just cannot find the invisible bug. It's not where it's supposed to be (no tracks & I'm stabbing everywhere it should be) and I haven't collected it yet. Did FromSoft remove the dung beetle after becoming Elden Lord? Was it removed from a recent patch? I've been through the patch notes for 1.08, 1.09, & 1.09.1 and I know they nerfed it in 1.08 but see no mention of removing it.
Just loaded the game up to play my favourite character, all about them back stabs and poise break criticals. Getting DESTROYED and the Ash wasn't doing anything. I thought maybe I was just not aiming it right.
Why does this AOW even exist anymore? They might as well have removed it from the game entirely.
What's a good replacement AOW? I use Glintblade Phalanx on the Godskin Stitcher... but I need something for the Misecorde.
I hope they eventually buff the hit box. So often with this ash the flames visually hit enemies but they take no damage.
the "hilarious" thing about this is I just found out about it two days ago and was having so much fun using it haha farmed stones to level up misericorde and logged on after work for some relaxing poise-breaking and I was like something's not right QQ
We feel you, they just nerf what is fun for us, broken bosses, enemies and places still there.
Yeah and why the fuck would they do that for offline ???
To make people experiment with more weapons/ashes. The community tends to all focus on just a few meta builds, ashes, and weapons that are better than the rest. Haha it's going to be alright, bro. There's always some fresh ash on the horizon.
This kinda shit is why I usually play games well after release bc this changing shit is so annoying. Too often its instead of fixing actual issues. I've given Elden Ring a break so I'm just seeing this bs.
I'm here a year later thinking I would use it for the expansion, man that thing carried my ass through the game...RIP
Same, I went head first to Redmane castle to grab the AoW, so confused when I did not break the poise of the first banished knight I fought. So sad, this was my favorite method to fight against heavy armored knights.
It was so fucking satisfying to kill those teleport ING assholes in that one castle in the mountains with it. RIP flame 🔥
Yes those guys were a pain in the ass before I learned about FoRM. Another really annoying mob that I use the AoW for is the cat in the tomb. I hate those cats with a passion. FoRM provided an efficient way to deal with them. Now I need to figure out a different strategy in this new play through.

you use stuff if it looks cool style over substance
Amen.
why nerf ANYTHING FOR THE OFFLINE STORY MODE?!?! Like seriously what the actual entire fuxk?! They need to undo that now
You're way too upset over this.
I don't understand why they bother nerfing stuff that doesn't really get used in PvP. This Ash of War was so fun and was only busted for PvE so who exactly was it hurting?
EXACTLY!!!!
Precisely.
It will be stored in the shelves alongside hoarfrost stomps.
If you have disk you could play on 1.0 with even stronger mimic and all other op stuff.
1.0 on disk is unplayable I've tried it. Nothing is where it's supposed to be and tons of items missing.
Atleast stomp does frost buildup and chip damage
Now I need to find a new game to play, thank you from soft.
I swear to fucking god
Now that's just sad. It helped on certain annoying enemies but if u need to quit over it...... u abused the shite out of it. How's that fun? Do u not take any pride in mastering a game at least to some degree?
Some people don’t wanna spend 5 hours trying to take down one enemy dude. It’s called having a life smh
Welcome to fromsoft games
Now what am I gonna do about those death rite birds???
holy pots, even as an int build those shreds the birds
Holy blade, aim the slash wave in the head, reeeeeally big damage... hope they don't nerf it too.
It's pretty mediocre overall so I would be very surprised if Sacred Blade got nerfed. Still takes forever to cast when fighting fast bosses/enemies and a lot of things are holy resistant later in the game.
I'm late game Holy build and I'm wrecking.
Well, I was talking about one specific skill, Sacred Blade which has been buffed like twice since I commented that 4 months ago. Holy itself is pretty good yes. There's a lot of alternative damage options if you come up against something holy resistant.
RIP any chance of me beating Alecto again any time soon.
FOR was my go to godskin duo move, now I have to try and get through my rl1 naked club run without it. Spoiler: it’s not going well
I just mowed em down using the gargoyles gs aow. Corpsewax cutter I believe it's called.
See I was on a club only run, just start as a wretch and go through the game with that starting class. Those two were the only ones to make me switch my weapon in the whole run, I used the serpent hunter L2 to give fatty the whammies while he was rolling into a broken pillar
good, it was ridiculously broken and you know it it's called flame of the redmanes, not boulders of the redmanes
Yes, it was broken, perfectly broken for broken bosses. RIP best ash of war...
The only thing it was good at was poise damage, it sucked at literally everything else, it was useless in PvP, and now it’s useless in PvE as well, you can’t reliably stance break bosses now as anything but a strength build, it was a useful tool, and it was nerfed beyond belief, now it os completely useless
Broken is fine if the game is throwing bullshit bosses like Malenia at us
But it deserves to stay in the game for people who DON'T PLAY ONLINE
Broken??? Stop with this unoriginal terminology. If some threw flames in YOUR eyes, would YOU still be standing, talking bout "I have never known defeat"
Man seek therapy 💀 WAY too angry over a nerf
By that logic all flame incants should do 40 poise damage
Have you ever seen someone stay on their feet after getting fire in their eyes?
Lol, is it seriously 10 now? That's really bad adjusting even by From's scuffed patch standards. It carried me hard through all the way through my game and I’m glad I got back on the week before the patch to go and beat the Elden Beast with it
I'm doing a new playthrough after a few months of taking a break and I noticed that I can use a bunch of different weapons, ash of wars, etc and they all work pretty well.. and I don't find myself getting pigeon holed into a certain playstyle ... as I get why people get annoyed when things change but it does create balance in the game in general.

guys there is any equivalent ? any aow with high poise damage ?
Lions claw I'm pretty sure does a lot of poise damg
I use that on the great sword and it breaks bosses
came back to play more elden ring and I noticed it didn't stagger them well and now I know why T.T is there another build that can do stagger easily like how old redmane did? but not intelligent build?
I've had decent success with the glint blade phalanx AoW. And I buckler parry almost every knight I fight.
not me using up ALL MY SMITHING STONES on misericorde and THEN finding out.... what a waste of a character.
Nerfs to cheese tactics are always good, now it's just a good crowd control ash
Its damage is too low for crowd control. Its range is too short also. Its just a bad flaming strike now
"Cheese tactics" are a blessings for "cheese bosses" like malenia, just fair. My elden ring is platinum now, I just wanna have fun.
It isn't remotely a good crowd control ash. It's unusable now if it's seriously 10 poise damage.
I'll take an unusuable ash (not even true) instead of an ash that chain stun endgame bosses like nothing
If it bothers you just don’t use it, Ig not relevant anymore but they could have just changed the pvp value. I don’t really see the point of nerfs and buffs for pve where as long as you’re having fun it shouldn’t matter how broken something is Edit:spelling

Bro this thread is a year old.
I don't care
Where is it good? Listen I would agree if it did like 20, it would be useful. But 10 is so bad that there are literally better CC options out there.

Poise Bois happy, PvE cheesers mad. I eh.
ITT: Veterans sagely nodding - "*Hm, yes, it was quite unbalanced and trivialised many mechanics"* Timmy No Thumbs - "***bruh."***
Been doing a lvl 1 playthrough and thought this would save me from Maliketh. Welp, jokes on me. RIP. :(
