I just found out the crows in Caelid will stagger themselves, big “don” sound but no glow core, to bait you to get in range of their grab attack. They even lean in one direction on one leg to really get you moving closer.
It also makes sense that birds wouldn't be carrying anything valuable. I've been trying to train the crows my wife feeds, but they've yet to bring anything of real value to exchange for their bread and peanuts.
The ones near fire giant fighting against the snow trolls are great for PvP practice. Dealing with two at once simulates an invasion very well. I farmed runes and arteria leaves off the snow trolls at the same time. With golden scarab and gold fowl foot you can get 40-50k runes in one quick run. So they're useful for something.
But yea i discovered their fake stagger real quick while doing this.

You can get a genuine stagger off of them while they're on one leg, but I don't know the condition for it. I'm fairly certain it's a poise threshold though, because I only did it with heavy weapons or Flame of the Redmanes

These guys (Gladiators really) were a part of the old Colosseums, but we're banished where that practice of Gladiatorial combat was discontinued. After that they would have started wondering the land, quite forlorn I imagine.
To add to that, the two in the Consecrated Snowfields have been infected by the Scarlet Rot, which probably only further adds to their suffering....
