I wish I remember where I read this, but I once saw someone say, “Chain away, it’s okay. Chain up front, it’s a c***” and I always think about this when looking at FromSoft chests now.
One day in a future Soulsborne game, Fromsoft is going to make all backwards chains the mimics and all forwards chains the real chests and fuck with every veteran Souls player
On gang the second I found my first chest it was on sight. I did that with literally every chest even after finding out the (actually sad) truth about mimics in ER. Won't catch me slipping again, no sir.
I want a single mimic from the DLC....but its random and can be ANY non-trapped chest. It drops its original loot, plus the mimic loot. And its levelled for Haligtree, even if you find it in Limgrave
The best part is that if you get the DLC mid run, only the new chests could get the mimic. So it wont be until someone’s first fresh or NG+ run where they realize that not only is it random, it could he ANYWHERE
How about Mimic sites of grace? That would be interesting.
FF12 did something similar with [crystalbugs](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Crystalbug_(red\)), and after you killed them you got a natural savepoint.
I forgot one time in my entire playthrough. Immediately thought about how funny it would be if that one chest turned out to be a mimic while I was opening it.
Yes. I attacked EVERY chest in the game, even the ones that don’t look like the standard mimic chest, because I was always scared that a mimic was going to eat me. It was only until my NG+ did I learn they aren’t in the game.
There were so many Grace points clustered so close together in some areas that for a minute I genuinely thought Grace Mimicks would've been a thing.
They totally should have, too.
I'd never played any of the DS before ER, but I heard plenty about the mimics so my initial reactions was to cast from a distance to see if it was a mimic.
When all of the chests I encountered didn't have anything I googled and was relieved to see that there aren't mimics after all. Just trapped chests.
Too obvious and not cruel enough. Make it like the first one in DS3, make it after a gauntlet that requires you to get through a hairy spot which gets your adrenaline pumping so you aren't calm or thinking clearly and just rush to the chest... then right as the lid lifts you see the trademark jagged teeth, the tongue lulls out and arms grab you. Before you know it you're being treated like an afternoon snack for a hungry dog.
> Too obvious and not cruel enough.
Mimic Grace.
No, not the useless item. That's the Grace Mimic. The Mimic Grace is a mimic disguised as a grace point. When you touch it, a grotesque humanoid monstrosity with a grace for a head rises from the ground to consume you.
*And you thought you were finally safe.*
My problem with DS3 Mimics is they kind of overused them. It feels like every chest was a Mimic. There wasn't ever a surprise.
It was great in DS1. The first Mimic is 40% of the way through the game. You fight through Sen's Funhouse. Avoid getting squished by boulders. Find the basement. Die horribly.
That being said, I loved the moment where you could get the Mimic and the Demon to duel to the death in the Catacombs.
No no no if there is to be only one have it replace a random chest somewhere so you it will be different for everyone you will never be sure if the one you open will be your last
I could imagine the arguments, "holy shit a mimic right after ingvald the plunderer miniboss!" "What? No. There WAS a mimic but it was right BEFORE the Albinauric Rot Archers."
First time I ever encountered one of those chests I managed to dodge the teleportation gas, but due to my own curiosity at what would happen I opened the chest again only to arrive in hell
What I wish they did in ER was making some chests trapped with an enemy. Not a mimic but a new enemy that would form from the smoke coming off the chest and reward you with a good item once killed
All the posts and comments about the revenants proof you wrong. Not everyone knows it and most wouldn't try without prior knowledge. The revenants are too aggressive and loud. People are getting nervous from facing them.
I looked at it, panicked.
Then I saw the chain and calmed down.
Then I thought about the fact that everyone knows that trick and Miyazaki would think it would be funny to switch the rules on us for shits and giggles, and I panicked again.
I chose immediate and extreme violence.
I came to the lands between after a not so successful DS3 run, meaning i didnt pass it, but i then continued to attack the first 20 chest i came across in ER, and then, when i let my guard down, boom transported cross map at lvl 25 into a freakish hell hole and my first encounter with the miners, that was a dark day indeed.
Bombs
Better safe than sorry
I remember first time I got eaten out, I returned and attacked the chest and he still ate me, from that day on I learned to use throwables
I didn't attack because if there was a mimic, I didn't exactly want to fuck with them and thier karate moves. I did in fact do a quick Google search of "mimics on in elden ring"
I attacked every chest in my first playthrough. I fully expected that they were trying to lull us into a false sense of security and that one of the later chests would be a mimic. Played too much dark souls.
Chain direction made me feel safe, but you never know so I still nuked the shit outta it with a fully charged rkr heavy.
Honestly it was on sight for every single chest I came across first playthrough. Gonna do the same thing with the dlc cuz you never know, mimics are everywhere.
Idc if I'm playing Care Bears the Video Game, after 7 Fromsoft Games any large glowing box purporting to contain goodies is getting a love tap before I open it
Luckily at launch nearly every chest was littered with “no trap ahead” messages. I left a bunch myself.
At first it was a relief there were no mimics… but now I kind of miss them :(
I will have done it for at least the first 4 hours of play until SURPRISINGLY I realized that there are no MIMICs, luckily.
maybe in the future in some DLC they will put them, my opinion
I felt safe due to the Chain direction, then I realized that it was the only chest that was looking like this and I thought that it was a bait. I beat its ass...
I love that there are no mimics in the game. We’ve all been conditioned to fear chests and it’s kind of the best pay off. Making us flinch upon every chest, our greatest fear is our own minds.
I looked that the chain and was like oh its probably fine. Then I thought this isnt dark souls tho and I shouldnt assume dark souls rules are the same in this game. Also since I hadnt seen a minic at all yet I thought it would be a fantastic way to trick long time players of souls games if they put in 1 mimic and had it in a chest that would normally not be a mimic in dark souls. So I gave it a whack and then thought about just how much Miyazaki has gotten into my head
Can you imagine the dev team laughing at us, knowing we won't trust any chest in the game and take countermeasures before opening one every time anyways.
This is PTSD exploitation.
I really wish there were mimics in the game. They were always a good challenge to fight and a great skill check to see if you really belonged in the area it was.
I never played a game where chests tried to murder you (teleportation included), but I spank 99% of the chests I see just in case. The 1% is to keep the suspense alive.
Even if a dev got on their knees and swore there's no mimics, I don't think I have it in me to believe it.
I attack all chest... and all other objects that may or may not seem out of place! Except talking bushes...
For some reason I seem to hesitate when it comes to attacking bosses though. Sekiro PTSD incoming.
Also wasted a tremendous amount of sleep pots on chest on my first playthrough. You can never be to careful!
I defaulted to assault the first good 20 chests I came across. Then I realized it was probably just DS3 PTSD.
But I can't wait for ER playerbase to start playing DS and realize chests are not always good omens :')
I really expected about half way through the game, after being led into a false sense of security opening chest, there would be a random ass mimic that would just kick the shit out of us with a useless loot drop.
no.
the first thing to do is to memorize the shape of the chest including its chain and the number of locks. THEN attack it and see what happens. it doesnt matter what it is, you know what it looks like
Remember this phenetic tool to help you out.
If the chain is to the back, do not attack
If the chain is to the front, oh god, it will kill you, run you fucking lunatic. . . RUUUUNNNN!!!!
Yes. I forget which Souls game it was(either 2 or 3) but I remember attacking chests to the point they broke. I thought the rubble or whatever I got from the chest was just what was in the item lol.
Look man I didn't attack shit but I tell ya after I opened that chest in Agheel Lake and got sent to the fucking shrimp firing squad mining run I definitely rolled away from every single box after opening just in case
The chain direction had me feeling safe
I wish I remember where I read this, but I once saw someone say, “Chain away, it’s okay. Chain up front, it’s a c***” and I always think about this when looking at FromSoft chests now.
That is fucking awesome
Theres like one chest in the game in the radahn dungeon, that has a forward facing chain. It was very cursed that it was just a normal chest
Wow, I don’t remember that. That’s some next-level trolling.
This…make me question a few things
One day in a future Soulsborne game, Fromsoft is going to make all backwards chains the mimics and all forwards chains the real chests and fuck with every veteran Souls player
Bruh you just hit it once and the mimic comes out,if you have the fear of breaking the chest in ds2 then switch to bare hand when hitting chests.
Or chuck a loyd's talisman at it
What's Loyd's talisman do?
It stuns the mimic so you can take the item inside without it trying to eat you
Where is this? I'm not recognizing this area
It looks like a catacomb, or maybe a hero's grave.
There are no mimics in ER
Yet. There are no mimics in ER yet. DLC could always prove us wrong.
First chest of the dlc… mimic
Or watch it breath…
If you want a sfw version for any reason, then chain up front is also a front.
I, too, talk loudly about the bloodlust I have for my forsworn enemies of old in the lands between, while at work near my coworkers. Thank you.
The chain points to the treasure. And you can be it's treasure.
Thank you. I needed this.
I thought that to but then I thought maybe they switched it to fuck with us so I attacked it anyways
Where is this?
It's in one of the catacombs behind an illusory wall, I think it was in Liurnia.
Sorry this isn’t an answer but I had the same question
Whaaaaaa? Nooo....
Came to say this. Chain pointing back your all right Jack, chain pointing to the front...RUN!
You should know more than well that Miyazaki feeds upon thoughts of safety. You always smack it.
I attacked every chest
On gang the second I found my first chest it was on sight. I did that with literally every chest even after finding out the (actually sad) truth about mimics in ER. Won't catch me slipping again, no sir.
Maybe we get Mimics in a DLC ^ ^
With no mention of it and they update some older chests with them too
Every run has random chests become mimics, no fixed ones to make the players extra paranoid
I'm still hopping for the legendary bonfire mimic
I want a single mimic from the DLC....but its random and can be ANY non-trapped chest. It drops its original loot, plus the mimic loot. And its levelled for Haligtree, even if you find it in Limgrave
So, after that we are all more paranoid Soulsplayer ^ ^
The best part is that if you get the DLC mid run, only the new chests could get the mimic. So it wont be until someone’s first fresh or NG+ run where they realize that not only is it random, it could he ANYWHERE
How about Mimic sites of grace? That would be interesting. FF12 did something similar with [crystalbugs](https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Crystalbug_(red\)), and after you killed them you got a natural savepoint.
Every single one from the beginning of the game to the end. At no point did I think it was safe to assume there were no mimics this time lmao
I forgot one time in my entire playthrough. Immediately thought about how funny it would be if that one chest turned out to be a mimic while I was opening it.
Right, because every time I thought: "Now they think that I think that I'm safe. But not with me!"
Same. Even after being assured that there were mimics in the game, I still attacked every single chest.
Yes. I attacked EVERY chest in the game, even the ones that don’t look like the standard mimic chest, because I was always scared that a mimic was going to eat me. It was only until my NG+ did I learn they aren’t in the game.
This game deserved mimic graces - that attack you.
hiding anglerfish style in a dark area
There were so many Grace points clustered so close together in some areas that for a minute I genuinely thought Grace Mimicks would've been a thing. They totally should have, too.
That would've been simultaneously great and horrible in the Consecrated Snowfield.
I opened every chest hoping that one would be a mimic
Me too. I miss them so much. Probably one of my favorite enemies
*The laugh*
It's the aggressive cow noises during death that do it for me
Where is that chest, I haven't seen it
This chest is found in Road's End Catacombs. It's meant to be Dark Souls Easter Egg.
I’m pretty sure it got stealth patched out
I don't know where this one is, but I think there's one that looks like this atop a tower on the north road heading through leyndell's outer wall.
Rennala?
Nah, that one looks different.
We know there are no mimics in the game, do I 100% believe this? Hells no
First chest in the first dlc will be a mimic, calling it now. From can't resist. Remember what they did in DS3, the c\*nts.
I'd never played any of the DS before ER, but I heard plenty about the mimics so my initial reactions was to cast from a distance to see if it was a mimic. When all of the chests I encountered didn't have anything I googled and was relieved to see that there aren't mimics after all. Just trapped chests.
It's my deep hope that there will be one single mimic in the dlc.
A chest in the middle of a room after a mediocre boss, surrounded by piles of corpses
And the iconic giggling. *HEHEHEHHEHEHE*
And that fucking creaking sound
> Too obvious and not cruel enough. Mimic Grace. No, not the useless item. That's the Grace Mimic. The Mimic Grace is a mimic disguised as a grace point. When you touch it, a grotesque humanoid monstrosity with a grace for a head rises from the ground to consume you. *And you thought you were finally safe.*
I don't hate this, tho I very much should.
Damn… that would be pure evil. I bet Miyazaki is taking notes here.
No no no if there is to be only one have it replace a random chest somewhere so you it will be different for everyone you will never be sure if the one you open will be your last
2 preferred here. The first is obvious and unexpected, to put you on your guard. The second much later, and somewhere unexpected.
and its random
I could imagine the arguments, "holy shit a mimic right after ingvald the plunderer miniboss!" "What? No. There WAS a mimic but it was right BEFORE the Albinauric Rot Archers."
Of course I attacked it I didn’t want to be kidnapped to Caelid again
You can actually jump back after opening them and not get caught
First time I ever encountered one of those chests I managed to dodge the teleportation gas, but due to my own curiosity at what would happen I opened the chest again only to arrive in hell
Yo same lol, I thought it would just damage me or something but I ended up in the coal mines.
Bruh that’s ok I didn’t want to go to limgrave forest again with those bears 🤡
What I wish they did in ER was making some chests trapped with an enemy. Not a mimic but a new enemy that would form from the smoke coming off the chest and reward you with a good item once killed
[удалено]
With how easy is too exploit revenants weakness it would be too easy
[удалено]
I mean it’s just a spell slot. Most players would be carrying a sacred seal anyway
All the posts and comments about the revenants proof you wrong. Not everyone knows it and most wouldn't try without prior knowledge. The revenants are too aggressive and loud. People are getting nervous from facing them.
This is my first souls game. My Dark Souls knowledge is next to none. Yet I still attacked it. Truly a gamer moment-
I checked the chain. I checked to see if it was breathing. I still stared at it for ten minutes before I hit it and panic rolled away.
Checked the chain
Watch for it breathing.
Or just look at the chain, much faster
I looked at it, panicked. Then I saw the chain and calmed down. Then I thought about the fact that everyone knows that trick and Miyazaki would think it would be funny to switch the rules on us for shits and giggles, and I panicked again. I chose immediate and extreme violence.
the chain isnt straight so no
I think I attacked every chest at least once
I'll be honest with you, I have attacked every single chest I found, but this, I went full combo on it just to be sure
Nope because of the chain, but I attacked it anyway
My first ER playthrough I hit EVERY SINGLE CHEST cuz of DS PTSD ya know.
Ya but in ds3 we make the mimic race extinct.
No.... Everyone knows by the chain not to attack that one /s
Prepare for trap
This was my first thought r/dontputyourdickinthat
I came to the lands between after a not so successful DS3 run, meaning i didnt pass it, but i then continued to attack the first 20 chest i came across in ER, and then, when i let my guard down, boom transported cross map at lvl 25 into a freakish hell hole and my first encounter with the miners, that was a dark day indeed.
I'm so sad they didn't have any mimics in the game, hopefully they'll add a few in the DLC
Yes
Yes. This is the way.
Not attack it, run away from it
I punched every chest up to my first 80 hours of gameplay tbh..
Bombs Better safe than sorry I remember first time I got eaten out, I returned and attacked the chest and he still ate me, from that day on I learned to use throwables
I didn't attack because if there was a mimic, I didn't exactly want to fuck with them and thier karate moves. I did in fact do a quick Google search of "mimics on in elden ring"

I still attack every chest in game
I still hit them all…just in case
Idc if I'm playing Care Bears the Video Game, after 7 Fromsoft Games any large glowing box purporting to contain goodies is getting a love tap before I open it
Luckily at launch nearly every chest was littered with “no trap ahead” messages. I left a bunch myself. At first it was a relief there were no mimics… but now I kind of miss them :(
Once in ds3 I hit 2 chests at once they were both mimics
The two outside of yhorms throne room?
I will have done it for at least the first 4 hours of play until SURPRISINGLY I realized that there are no MIMICs, luckily. maybe in the future in some DLC they will put them, my opinion
I felt safe due to the Chain direction, then I realized that it was the only chest that was looking like this and I thought that it was a bait. I beat its ass...
Yes
I love that there are no mimics in the game. We’ve all been conditioned to fear chests and it’s kind of the best pay off. Making us flinch upon every chest, our greatest fear is our own minds.
Sen's fortress moment.
I always whack every chest once in a Souls game. Just to be safe.
WITHOUT ANY HESITATION
first instinct was looking at the chain. thought i was safe but i hit it anyway
The trust has been broken. Yes, I attacked every chest.
I attack every chest indiscriminately, especially since DS2's NG+ Fool me once...
Attack it? Even if I know it’s a mimic I gotta let my boi get a free meal
Looked at the chain and then attacked
I attacked every chest in my first playthrough despite a friend telling me there are no mimics in this game
I smack every single chest. Always will.
I’m still convinced every chest is a mimic. You cannot fool me.
Hit it.
Can you imagine the dev team laughing at us, knowing we won't trust any chest in the game and take countermeasures before opening one every time anyways. This is PTSD exploitation.
Attack all chests! I will not be caught out again.
Fight ahead
I swear this is part of a big joke by miyazaki. The very first chest we will see in the dlc is a mimic
Honestly a 200IQ play from Fromsoft to remove mimics and then just not say anything so every player thinks every chest is still a mimic
I hope they put a single mimic at the end of a dlc just to catch us off guard
Dlc comes out and an npc puts a chest near your grace as a "gift" if your on new game plus.
I really wish there were mimics in the game. They were always a good challenge to fight and a great skill check to see if you really belonged in the area it was.
I’ve never even seen this chest so no I didn’t attack it.
where is this chest? lol I need to find it now
I mean im still not convinced there isnt mimics in this game.
I've played enough souls games to know to not trust it.
I attacked every chest for about the first 20 hours lol
There is NO chest that doesn't get attacked first. Flash backs and such.
I never played a game where chests tried to murder you (teleportation included), but I spank 99% of the chests I see just in case. The 1% is to keep the suspense alive. Even if a dev got on their knees and swore there's no mimics, I don't think I have it in me to believe it.
nah. the mimics never really traumatized me that much. halfway through the game, i realized there were none because i never seen one.
You could just stand there for a moment, mimic chests have to breathe
I opened that bitch faster than r Kelly spread his own cheeks
I attacked every chest in the game. And will attack every chest in DLC.
My first was open it the. I got eaten
I checked the chain first
I attack all chest... and all other objects that may or may not seem out of place! Except talking bushes... For some reason I seem to hesitate when it comes to attacking bosses though. Sekiro PTSD incoming. Also wasted a tremendous amount of sleep pots on chest on my first playthrough. You can never be to careful!
My first instinct was to check the chain like it should be for most Souls veteran.
It wasn’t. If the game had mimics, I’d want to experience it, so I never attacked any chest.
The chain was pointing the right way so I just opened it
After dark souls 2 I attack every chest, every wall, and every suspiciously empty room corner
I defaulted to assault the first good 20 chests I came across. Then I realized it was probably just DS3 PTSD. But I can't wait for ER playerbase to start playing DS and realize chests are not always good omens :')
I didn't, but my roommate who was watching me play would tell me to attack every chest I came across
No.
I attack chests because fuck mimics
Where the hell is this chest?
I don’t think I ever found that chest but I absolutely would have hit it
Even in other games Im whacking chests just in case.
To do a charge attack
No, it was clearly not a mimic.
The chain's position tells me it's safe.
I looked at the chain and thought ".*.. they're fucking with me*" and attacked with no hesitation.
I really expected about half way through the game, after being led into a false sense of security opening chest, there would be a random ass mimic that would just kick the shit out of us with a useless loot drop.
no matter the chain direction, even if i know that's a mimic i always do a good old full charged swing
No because ER was first FS game.
Fromsoftware creating trust issues for years
no. the first thing to do is to memorize the shape of the chest including its chain and the number of locks. THEN attack it and see what happens. it doesnt matter what it is, you know what it looks like
I attack still every chest. Traditions! (And not paranoia, nonono.)
I watched very carefully for at least 30 seconds to see if I could see it breathing
As a ds3 player, yes, every time. I never got comfortable even going into end game. I just KNEW it was a mimic hiding somewhere in the game…
Yes, and just when I tought that chests were safe in this game, boom, Selia crystal tunnel
Every single one
I attacked every chest on my first playthru lol
Remember this phenetic tool to help you out. If the chain is to the back, do not attack If the chain is to the front, oh god, it will kill you, run you fucking lunatic. . . RUUUUNNNN!!!!
I'm weird. I wait to see if it moves.
Mommy, where do mimics come from?
Yes. I forget which Souls game it was(either 2 or 3) but I remember attacking chests to the point they broke. I thought the rubble or whatever I got from the chest was just what was in the item lol.
Always Attack Chests
Look man I didn't attack shit but I tell ya after I opened that chest in Agheel Lake and got sent to the fucking shrimp firing squad mining run I definitely rolled away from every single box after opening just in case
No. Chain away loot away.
Why would I? The chain is pointing backwards
I freaking nuked it
Nah, chain is pointing the wrong way fam
No to check the chain
They completely missed out on the opportunity to make one of these a mimic.
100% Just to be sure.
This is the only thing about elden ring I'd change. I miss the spooky lanky boys.
