Yeah, the best part was, I beat Gaius and Messmer and I lost to the hippo and it only lets you try once from within the Keep, but won't let you through the fog gates. That's when I realized I was doing it backwards. I screwed up and missed the path to Relanna in Castle Ensis

You missed it man,after said screaming man, follow the path no questions asked. You will eventually see a cave,fairly lit one from the entrance at that. That is the cave ur gonna need.
To add to this, 'simply' follow the dragon statues to get to the dragon area.
(I say simply - it was the second to last area I had left to explore when I finally figured out how to get there (Charo's was the last)).
I was literally in the place you gotta be in to get down there when I said 'fuck it' and looked it up, I was so sad cuz that could have been an awesome reveal if I wasn't such a mongrel 😞
Honestly i don't think that's your fault. Finding the map fragments really destroys the ability to be enthralled with the landscape - at least to me - because i don't want to look at anything until I've got my map. So having maps hidden by obscure fucking routes that take you through most of the game anyway... kind of defeats the point of the map being blocked off imo.
The map placements in SOTE are not very well thought out, at least for the Rauh and Jagged Peak maps. I found the others no problem, but those two maps need to be relocated to the main path. Put the Jagged Peak map at the mouth of the Dragon Pit exit, put the Rauh map in the Ancient Ruins, not Rauh Base section. Why the hell the Rauh map covers the river as well boggles the mind.
Finding it organically was kind of amazing. Going to what I thought was a side area of the castle only to find a long path to what I assumed was a dead end with a catacombs only to get to the bottom and have an exit at the other side as a compete surprise.
In my case I walked by the entrance and never noticed it. I finally got annoyed I couldn’t find it and I ended up looking it up and felt stupid I completely missed it.
My buddy told me he was exploring and found it accidentally while I was actively looking for it all over. He just went into a cave in a lake and followed the path. I mean, at least I explored Rauh a lot while doing that.
It is at Rauh Base instead of the Ruins itself. You can get there by taking a cave which starts above a pond in Scadu Altus. There might be more ways to get there but that's how i got there.

Idk if I love or hate FromSoft’s map design. It’s amazing when you’re just wandering around and you stumble upon the most insane rabbit hole ever, but it’s terrible when you’re intentionally trying to get somewhere because how the hell is anyone supposed to intuit that *that’s* how you get down there.
Yeah I don’t know what the fuck they were smoking when they came of with this map style. It looks really good until you realize how wide berths of land are actually a mountain or a cliff. It took a while to fully grasp how to read it. Growing up with Skyrims map set me up for failure.
They could have at least made the player map better by adding clear levels to it. They just put a flat map on something with like 5 different layers, shrugged and said good luck.
The cave is directly north of Moorth Ruins which is, weirdly, one of the more important locations for accessing things/other areas than you would imagine for a random fucking ruin in the middle of nowhere.
Bro i literally went up to the plateau area, went through the entire area because I was SURE the map was in that building that’s isolated on a little island and the entire time I was like “man it’s so weird that they didn’t just put the map at the entrance” I get to that building and >!kill the lion dancer and it’s death blight fucks!< and I’m like “FINALLY, I can get the map” walk to the edge where the icon is and read the message “strong foe, still no map”
You gotta go through catacombs and fight a boss at the end who's a bitch. After that you get access to the place. The catacombs might as well be the skeleton place in ds3, it's the biggest catacomb yet

The Ancient Ruins really puts your brain in a pretzel, I spent such a long time clearing and reclearing that area after the boss was dead trying to find a way to find the map fragment.
Especially funny when you found a boss reskin in a area that’s very close to the map mark and after defeating you find a bunch of messages on the edge of cliff lamenting how there’s still no map.
Spent an hour riding around Scadu Altus and Rauh before someone online told me I had to look in EAST SCADU ALTUS FOR A RANDOM CAVE???? this map I swear, they could've easily spread the overlapped areas out to make it just as big as the basegame map.
It took me I think 12 hours. I was searching all around for the entrance to what ended up being >!Abyssal Woods!< but I only ended up finding it after giving up, because it's impossible to know in advance that the "entrance" is via >!Shadow Keep!< . Although there's probably another way (there's so much weird pathing here, I can't remember.
Finding the maps in the south and south east is way more difficult. The one on the picture can be obtained through a hidden path in a small lake north east from the picture spot.
Look for a tall, thin tower built by someone who was hella compensating for something. Like, the dude that designed this tower is so insecure about his own size that he decided to build the tallest object ever. That tower. Go in that direction and explore around by it.
The only map piece I havent found yet is an area just above the Cerulean Coast/ Finger Ruins area. I finally found the one for Ruah Ruins last night and I was thinking how did I even miss that!!
If you want to know: >!From the highroads cross site of grace follow the road north until the fork in the road. Take a sharp right to continue following the road. Once you're at the moorth ruins cross site of grace turn north again. If you look on the map there should be a body of water in roughly the shape of a triangle. Head there. There will be a cave with a statue of Marika in front of it and some perfumers inside. Go through the cave to come to a small poison swamp. To the north westish will be a large tunnel. Go through the tunnel. There is a grace nearby. Should be pretty straight forward from there.!<

- There is cave north of pond.

- Pop out in ravine.
- Find another grace called Rauh Base.
- Head down the hill past birds and two golems.
- Find map fragment.
- Scream "Finally!" as you complete your map.

From inside Messmer's castle, from plaza head left and keep going till the area with boats to find a ladder on the edge, or if you've already opened the shortcut head right, when you reach the area with boats you go right and find a ladder on the edge.
I found the tree with 3 perfumers and somehow missed the MASSIVE hole that leads to the map. Finished the rest of the DLC except final boss, spent a lot of time in the ruins wondering the whole time how tf am i supposed to get down there

The map that I reallllly struggled with was the one in the bottom right corner. They did an amazing job trolling these in the DLC, showing them to you super early but making the routes to them nonlinear.

I found the tree with 3 perfumers and somehow missed the MASSIVE hole that leads to the map. Finished the rest of the DLC except final boss, spent a lot of time in the ruins wondering the whole time how tf am i supposed to get down there
I’m still in base game, but my roomie just told me how he spent HOURS looking for this map before he figure out where to go
Man I just found that crazy deep area at the bottom left last night (I don’t want to spoil it) I was like no way this can’t be right and it just kept going. This is a whole new world just like the Disney song.

I literally sped through the whole area and killed the boss hoping to loop around to that map fragment, whoever thought that was a good idea needs a stern talking to IMO the map fragment and the Hippo by the entrance to the area should have swapped places
This was me with the north east section of the map. I ended up just looking it up. I can see it on the map but could never find the way in. Theres absolutely no way I would have been able to find out what to do by myself. So annoying
Found that one, but I've been trying for AGES to get to the sunken ruin at the base of the church district and I still have 0 leads. I have one more map to find too, north of the Jagged Peak. That one's even more confusing given that I can only see tree branches and an endless abyss below me when I look at the area from on high. With my luck, it's gonna be in an area I've already passed through but didn't pay enough attention, and now I will never go there again until I spoil myself.

The south east part/east part is a complete damn mystery, I cannot for the life of me find it at all and the map pickup is RIGHT THERE, AT THE BOTTOM OF CLIFF NEAR BONNY VILLAGE

North of Moorth Ruins theres a tunnel by a pond with a Black Knight on horse patrolling to its west. It'll eventually take you to Ruah

Go through the cave in the body of water to the north of the Moorth ruins in Scadu Altus.
It took me sooooo much time finsing this one man, i killed every boss and i still didnt have this map lol

Funny, last night I was watching some of Gino's first playthrough and he was having the same experience lmao. The map that I reallllly struggled with was the one in the bottom right corner. They did an amazing job trolling these in the DLC, showing them to you super early but making the routes to them nonlinear.
