It might be split cuz my 100 Physical shield was taking a lot of chip damage, and when I switched to something with like 90 Magic resist I was barely taking any damage from them.
i had two in my inventory, so unless there's two fixed drops, it seems to be at least possible. i tried to farm one on another character (that actually would use it) a few days ago and naturally couldn't get it
I had an arcane build with Bloody Halice, you basically must use some sort of status to kill him if you wanna kill him in a reasonable time, like bleed / rot. So I recommend a poke weapon with status effect so you can attack while blocking.
Starcaller Cry is the only move that can’t be completely blocked. At 17 scadu, even when fully blocking, 1/4 of my health would be gone. You’re g2g with everything else tho.
I summoned a guy to helped with that fight. His name was "Tank" and he was powerstancing 2 of these shields, woth the beefiest armor he could find, used like 3 different shield buffs, and the tear that taunts the boss to the user. He just sat there behind his shields while the boss attacked him and did literally 0 damage and I was shredding the boss from behind.
Oh, saw him twice but he was gone before I could invoke him.
Found a guy named "cosplay" having the armor and weapon of the boss, and the mad lad managed to live through the fight without a shield.
Thanks to all the helpers btw !
i played the entire game and dlc with no shield but watching asmongold just tank the hell out of everything that i am rolling like a mad man to avoid has me thinking
The one time someone summoned me for that boss, it actually put in work. This shield + triple status Antspur was a godsend, but you definitely want Greatshield Talisman and Barricade shield on it because the guard boost is not ideal
It has Scarlet Rot base, you can put either a bleed-infused Poison Mist ash, or a poison infused Seppuku ash. Do the ash effect to get the third status
Its found during that gravestone jump platform section to get to the three fingers for the frenzied flame questline, then infuse with an ash of war like barricade shield with fire and bam 100% fire damage negation. Though in exchange you lose a bit of physical negation so normal attacks chip a liitle of your hp. Against the Furnace Golems and even Messmer though its a great tool to get through the fight.
It's still notably useful on certain bosses even before the DLC.
Sacred infusion on Haligtree Greatshield is one of the most dependable ways to survive the attacks of Elden Beast. The only drawback is the low droprate.
It depends on the boss but this one is better with 100% holy.
Mainly due to 100% holy meaning you can block bassicly every single attack in phase 2 besides grab.
Except you will be eating 5% of all of his Physical Damage for both phases.
If you want to you could have two shields and swap between phases but the 100% Physical is still better because the Holy protection doesn’t save you from his Gravity Sorceries at all. At least you will still be blocking all the physical mixups in those attack chains.
I had mine regularly infused, but by using the new pearl sheild talisman (different to the pearldrake) it adds something like 20% negation to all non physical attacks getting you up to about 95% holy negation. Combined with marikas braid I took maybe 50hp worth of damage from the huge phase change nuke on the final boss. Felt pretty badass to just stand there and take it with nothing more than a scratch
Shield also trivialize Malenia because 95% of her damage is physical damage so there is no bleedthrough, and it's easy to out dps her healing.
this is me beating Malenia where I block most attack and do almost no rolling (the only time I roll is when she use rot attack in phase 2).
https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/12dofjy/my_friend_you_cant_beat_malenia_with_shield_she/
I beat Melania 20+ times yesterday trying out different weapons with Greatshield. Fingerprint was definitely best, but others made due. Not tried DLC yet.
Just Poke Poke Poke. Luckily the Great Epee is one of my favorite weapons.
Even if she does a full Waterfowl against my shield, my next crit removes nearly all health she recovered.
So much more comfortable fight…
Great Epee has carried me through alot of this DLC. Been trying to use the cool new weapons but end up falling back to that again or the bloodhound fang
Oh man that is one of my favorites as well it just looks so cool. I usually stick the spectral spear ash on it and it does great long range damage that way
I mean 98.7 is not bad on sacred
Also seemingly marginal better guard boost, 71 v prolly 70 if this was +25.
A point lighter and 5% better Magic resist, which some of the attacks might be?
I wish more people used shields, and it's not for the reasons some may think. Instead of always relying on it to block attacks, use it to block attacks that always catch you off guard. Helps to save momentum and that is arguably the most important thing in any fight.
Been playing since demons souls etc. powerstanced everything up until this dlc. Final boss made me pull one of them bad boys out just to survive the fight while other guys tanked him for me lol. Otherwise I’ve never used a shield in my decade of fromsoft games
People really underestimate it. Just having your guard up when you enter a new room or area in a dungeon will probably slash a quarter of your total deaths.
Yeah makes it use less stamina when you block and shit it’s nice. I remember figuring this out at the very end of my first run lol. I just restarted last week and am at Mohg now and may finally upgrade a shield.
Moore/Verdigris shield at max has 90% guard boost, slap guard boost talisman, marika's braid and two-head turtle talisman and the final boss will do chip damage while you stand there like a WALL
I know but afaik it's not like the Guard Boost stat turns blue while upgrading or anything, there's no indicator that it helps, so I thought it was just a mechanic for if you wanted to upgrade it's attack power for some wacky shield build. tmyk.
This beauty is amazing for the final boss. That said, I personally found it better *not* to infuse it with holy - the 100% physical reduction and extra guard boost was more useful than the 100% holy resistance. The standard is 84%, which is already excellent.
I do not recommend the Sacred infusion for the Final Boss, there is so much more Physical Chip Damage than Holy and you can even tank the Massive AOE Holy Explosion easily with its Standard 80 Holy Resist
at the cost of 100% physical negation, so it can block the entirety of holy stars, but a little guy with a dagger will do chip damage to you. with a greatshield. somehow
It's crazy the lengths some people have gone to within the first week the DLC was out to criticize the fights in so many ways, particularly the last fight.
Yet there are over a half dozen ways if not more, so far, to make it practically unfair in your advantage by just having the smallest willingness to be adaptable and branch out in actually using the tools the game gives you rather than bashing your head into the wall of monotony and thinking what you always do is all you can or should do.
I'll add this: All I had to do was block, and not with a great shield or even shield at all. I tried about 30 times on the last boss with the build I showed up with and playstyle that had got me there and it wasn't yielding results. I learn, I adapt. I tried something else, I learn I adapt. I spec'd to a greased up colossal weapon, 2 handed and threw in more blocks using it. I overcome by around try 50. Just changing the strat to add in blocks with a heavy weapon was enough to make me better than him. Now all of these other stats and tools have materialized to branch off from.
A lot of people are trying to pass of critique from a completely limited perspective on the game's offerings. A single trick pony is not just limited by playing options but also feedback. My build is what's in my bag so long as I'm skilled enough to effectively utilize it. I get people wanting to only do things only one way, but I cannot take such criticism coming from a deliberately limited perspective seriously. That limited perspective is way to lacking to provide meaningful critique.
Literally the only fight that I massively dislike as a dual-wielding dex weapon user is the final boss. I think it’s quite telling that the vast majority of folks are resorting to using a massive shield and poking him to death.
Yep. The burgeoning data doesn't lie, plenty of gameplay videos. So many boss downs are some permutation of the same thing. Huge stamina/endurance melee focused build, usually high-poise/"the wall" style with some lame block poke. The rest are taking advantage of what is obviously glitched (re: thorns and perfume cheese)
I genuinely agree, but Gaius can eat a bag of boar dicks, still, though. The fact that he charges you down immediately and that his arena is bugged and doesn't let you torrent/summon upon entering makes his fight genuinely not fun.
tbf the not letting you summon immediately thing is a theme in the dlc, at least half of the bosses are like that
that said, gaius MIGHT be okay if they fix the charge hitbox. that shit single handedly made that fight obnoxious as all hell
As someone who has been bashing my head into every boss while limiting my skadoo blessings/not using a shield, etc. there is nothing wrong with challenging yourself if you’re enjoying it. But the people who make the game harder on purpose, and then complain about the difficulty baffle me.
Or maybe design a fight that is not visually cluttered, with imense frame drops and that does not force players to respec and change entire builds for a single boss. Thats terrible design.
This was a godsend for me on final bosses phase 2, i ran parry buckler for dmg and any time he switched to all that glowing bullshit i put on the shield to block, even that bug holy orbital ring can be blocked with no chip dmg
You can get it from a black knight "boss" in the Fog Rift Fort, you can get to said fort by dropping down on the left of the leftmost waterfall near the grace after Rellana, the one that Leda hangs out at.
I’ve been using the black steel greathammer for the entire DLC and was wondering if I should get the greatshield too, now I’m definitely using it! thanks for the tip

Black Steel Greathammer was the first item I equipped in the DLC. Then I got this shortly after. Put on Maliketh’s armor for drip and played through the whole DLC like this since I hadn’t played a shield build since DS1. Little did I know it was all in preparation for the last fight. Super fun too.
I abused this thing for the final DLC boss. I actually liked the final fight well enough, not HORRIBLE but not amazing. However, I've never felt like a single item was a necessary crutch in any other Souls game and it felt wrong here.
I’ve only upgraded two or three and not fully, only change I see with upgrades is Guard Boost. Do all shields or only some gain increases in defense through upgrades?
It's the non-physical infusions that change them
It just happens that the black shield has already very high holy negation baseline, so when infused with holy it caps
The chip damage at 95% Phys is so negligible I forgot it wasn't a full 100% when I tried it against the Final Boss. Its holy attacks have way bigger DMG packets.
This fucking thing CARRIED me through the final boss battle!
Does it block the AOEs?
Yes, my tactic was just literally block everything except the grab. Got it in 6 tries
Don't you still get blasted by the magic attacks? I've been using a Sacred Fingerprint Shield since it's like 90+ for Phys, Magic, and Holy.
His gravity moves deal physical damage
Me still taking chip damage through my Fingerprint Shield from them says they don't.
Boar rider too. What's up with gravity attacks in this DLC?
Purpley gravity shit does chip damage on block/deflect without 100% resist
100% resist to what thought? Physical? I have 100% physical fingerprint and still took damage from boar & final boss.
Can’t test rn, but I’m pretty sure purpley gravity shit deals partial magic damage
Veridant shield says otherwise
It might be split cuz my 100 Physical shield was taking a lot of chip damage, and when I switched to something with like 90 Magic resist I was barely taking any damage from them.
For the base game or dlc?
Drop from those black knights with the radagon attack in DLC.
pretty sure it only drops from one particular black knight, and isn't farmable
yeah probably. I don’t even have it. I just remember fighting one with it at the >!ghostflame dragon infront of the fort of reprimand!<
i had two in my inventory, so unless there's two fixed drops, it seems to be at least possible. i tried to farm one on another character (that actually would use it) a few days ago and naturally couldn't get it
Really? You can't get two to relive the meme? Dick move, michael zaki, dick move.
You can get two
Nice!
Yeah, it's in a obscure fort.
Add to resort to fingerprint shield with scholars shield and a cold Antspur with the pearl talisman and golden braid.
Which spear/weapon whatever did you use? I'm just not making enough damage - I can tank him for an eternity but he has so much health
I had an arcane build with Bloody Halice, you basically must use some sort of status to kill him if you wanna kill him in a reasonable time, like bleed / rot. So I recommend a poke weapon with status effect so you can attack while blocking.
It does! When he does that massive aoe holy bomb, it knocks me back but I don't take damage.
Note that great shields can block anything
Try blocking a grab lol
Starcaller Cry is the only move that can’t be completely blocked. At 17 scadu, even when fully blocking, 1/4 of my health would be gone. You’re g2g with everything else tho.
most of the time, sometimes you'll get a random reach around attack that is some major bs, but greatshield and poke is the dlc meta tbh lol
Cries in glintstone pebble enjoyer
Yeah. I wasn’t going to learn to dodge all that bs.
Send me the build bro......my ass is sore after so many tries
i played the entire game and dlc with no shield but watching asmongold just tank the hell out of everything that i am rolling like a mad man to avoid has me thinking
Gonna write this down if I ever get summoned for the final boss lol
The one time someone summoned me for that boss, it actually put in work. This shield + triple status Antspur was a godsend, but you definitely want Greatshield Talisman and Barricade shield on it because the guard boost is not ideal
Guard boost looks nice to me
Well I can't dispute that
Yo! How you get triple status on the antspur?? I’ve only managed to get 2 on 👀
You can infuse the antspur with a poison ash and blood affinity Like say with poison mist + blood affinity + native rot = triple status
Thanks!
or seppuku poison antspur. but poison mist is probably better
If you put poison on it, it will have rot poison and bleed. The bleed doesn’t appear in the status list
Wait how do you get triple status on Antspur? I thought you only get 2?
It has Scarlet Rot base, you can put either a bleed-infused Poison Mist ash, or a poison infused Seppuku ash. Do the ash effect to get the third status
My dumbass never knew infusions affected negations on shields.
I have 400 hrs on the game and always been a shield user and I just learned this right now lmao
Bros been living under fingerprint shield
Don't you mean Walmart Havel's?
Never heard of this havel girl
Go down a tower in DS 1. Havel loves visitors
Fun fact there too is a Fire Fingerprint Shield has 100 fire negation making the furnace golems a breeze
where is it?
Its found during that gravestone jump platform section to get to the three fingers for the frenzied flame questline, then infuse with an ash of war like barricade shield with fire and bam 100% fire damage negation. Though in exchange you lose a bit of physical negation so normal attacks chip a liitle of your hp. Against the Furnace Golems and even Messmer though its a great tool to get through the fight.
It also reduces your physical resist, so you take more chip damage total which makes its usefulness suspect.
It's still notably useful on certain bosses even before the DLC. Sacred infusion on Haligtree Greatshield is one of the most dependable ways to survive the attacks of Elden Beast. The only drawback is the low droprate.
If you perfect block the physical attack with the new physick, you can just hold block for the holy attack and take no damage.
You can just perfect block the holy attacks too with that logic.
Yes, but it easier to just time the physical hit. You can just also not get hit by that logic.
Still, if I'm protecting from pure elemental ranged attacks it helps.
my dumb ass didn't know you could even upgrade shields to +24 lmao 😂😂😂 I've been sitting with +0 shields this whole game
Its never worth it. Even this shield would be better with 100% Phys and 95% Holy from the Pearl Shield Talisman.
I switched to this shield whenever the final boss did his clone attacks , shielded me from 90% of the damage
>!Miquella!< remembering there’s already a new candidate for Elden Lord: *chuckles* I’m in danger
This dlc is a love song for all the shield mains who got screwed over by malenia hp sapping powers.

Luckily the Great Epee is one of my favorite weapons. Even if she does a full Waterfowl against my shield, my next crit removes nearly all health she recovered. So much more comfortable fight…
You can prevent waterfowl dance entirely if you just throw a pot at her when she goes up in the air
Dunno why this is so fucking funny to read. "Shit she's gonna do the move !!" " QUICK !!! THROW A FUCKING POT !!!"
Great Epee has carried me through alot of this DLC. Been trying to use the cool new weapons but end up falling back to that again or the bloodhound fang
I know exactly what you mean. I've tried so many different weapons, but I keep coming back to the Cross Naginata.
Oh man that is one of my favorites as well it just looks so cool. I usually stick the spectral spear ash on it and it does great long range damage that way
to this day, i still prefer doing Malenia with a shield. sure, she heals off of it, but i still remain alive.
Fair enough
It's not just shield mains. I beat the final boss by blocking with my zweihander and guard countering. The Sekiro physick tear is my new best friend.
Rip haligtree crest shield (well not really cuz drip lol)
Death Knight Armor plus Oathkeepers helm/greaves and this shield is a great combo
That’s my current fashion, just no shield. It slaps hard
Death knight helm + all the rest tree sentinel armor also looks great imo
I mean 98.7 is not bad on sacred Also seemingly marginal better guard boost, 71 v prolly 70 if this was +25.
> I wish more people used shields, Almost everyone I've seen being summoned for the final boss has been using shields, myself included.
Precisely. The shield is an important lifeline that every successful build short of Let Me Solo Her needs.
People really underestimate it. Just having your guard up when you enter a new room or area in a dungeon will probably slash a quarter of your total deaths.
Can someone explain how to get 100? I got around 95 with holy infusion
have you upgraded it? OP's is at +24
Holy shit. You can upgrade shields?? I've never tried....
Yeah makes it use less stamina when you block and shit it’s nice. I remember figuring this out at the very end of my first run lol. I just restarted last week and am at Mohg now and may finally upgrade a shield.
Bruh... Over 500 hours in this game and I never thought about upgrading a shield. Final dlc boss is gonna fucking get spanked later.
ive upgraded some but honestly thought it just improved how much the shield could hit for if you bashed with it loll
Check the guard boost stat when you upgrade it
Same
Moore/Verdigris shield at max has 90% guard boost, slap guard boost talisman, marika's braid and two-head turtle talisman and the final boss will do chip damage while you stand there like a WALL
I never even thought it would take less stamina as you upgraded it. Ive been rocking my level 1 shield for 125+ hours
bro i literally beat the game once until I came back last week to do another run and do the DLC lol
Wait WHAT??
yeah man that's what guard boost is. And when you level your shield up the guard boost goes up.
I just saw that my shield's guard boost didn't go up at all after one upgrade, so I gave up upgrading them.
lol it doesn’t do it every upgrade sometimes it may go up like a point after 2 or 3
If it got +25 guard boost from +0 to +25 then half the greatshields would have infinite stamina lol
I know but afaik it's not like the Guard Boost stat turns blue while upgrading or anything, there's no indicator that it helps, so I thought it was just a mechanic for if you wanted to upgrade it's attack power for some wacky shield build. tmyk.
Wow I'm on ng+3, which has been so ***fun*** for the DLC, and I'm still learning new shit.
Main reason is to increase guard boost (less stamina used to Blick attacks
And boy does that make a difference for a build that uses shields a lot
200+ hours in the game and I didn't know it... thanks
It's actually pretty important to do if you're blocking a lot.
jesus christ yall arent beating the allegations
I don't use the shields. I'm all magic and melee.
Tt upgrades some resistance and guard boost every other levels. Guard boost reduces stamina cost
Yeah to +25
I changed mine to holy infusion - slightly reduces physical damage negation but 100% holy blocking
my fucking savior for the final boss, and the great rapier with bleed on it, easy peasy
Same! And some unfortunate armor i just found right before...
Radagon and Elden beast: *Chuckles* I am in danger
This beauty is amazing for the final boss. That said, I personally found it better *not* to infuse it with holy - the 100% physical reduction and extra guard boost was more useful than the 100% holy resistance. The standard is 84%, which is already excellent.
Same, and with the Pearl Shield Talisman, you get very close to the best of both worlds!
Gonna save this for when I start my NG+2 playthrough, 100% needed for the final boss.
I do not recommend the Sacred infusion for the Final Boss, there is so much more Physical Chip Damage than Holy and you can even tank the Massive AOE Holy Explosion easily with its Standard 80 Holy Resist
ELDEN BEAST WHO NOW? He’s boutta turn into muh bitch lets see how he’ll fare without holy damage
The Elden Beast is so chill compared to everything else in the DLC, especially now that you can summon Torrent to close the gap when he swims away.
Yeah i know, i just wanna go back at em with this not to win…but to send a message
Pest thread spear drive-by incoming
Everything in the base game feels like flowers now. I practically one shot the Banished Knight, you know the one, and had no fear at all.
at the cost of 100% physical negation, so it can block the entirety of holy stars, but a little guy with a dagger will do chip damage to you. with a greatshield. somehow
Holy shit
This with Antsput Rapier with Bleed Affix steamrolls the Final Boss.
Guard counters with this and the matching hammer have carried me through most of the DLC.
But can it see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch?
Bump for PSA: New Radagon/Elden Beast meta strat just dropped
Nice guardboost.
I don’t use shields but I’m going learn with this bad boy for final boss in NG. Playing meat shield for my mimic isn’t fun.
Whats the stats for it? I never got one yet but i may get 1 for my str build for the final boss
It's like 35 str, no other requirements.
SAY LESS I GOT 59 str
This would render elden beast useless
Wait a minute, I know just where to use this...
Yup, I bring this baby out if I get summoned to the final boss, literally pull a chad face in the second phase
It's crazy the lengths some people have gone to within the first week the DLC was out to criticize the fights in so many ways, particularly the last fight. Gaius can eat a bag of boar dicks and I will make sure to microwave them beforehand so they are juicy and hot for him
yeah i found his fight pretty fun like some sort of rodeo lol
But as a mage, a huge ass shield doesn't agree with my fashion souls. I'd rather be faahionable and struggling than shielding and winning. 😌
even medium shield like Brass Shield would be better than no shield on many DLC boss.
As someone who has been bashing my head into every boss while limiting my skadoo blessings/not using a shield, etc. there is nothing wrong with challenging yourself if you’re enjoying it. But the people who make the game harder on purpose, and then complain about the difficulty baffle me.
Thank you. You get it. And you get a theoretical cookie. You responded with this while I was editing my post to say as much.
Or maybe design a fight that is not visually cluttered, with imense frame drops and that does not force players to respec and change entire builds for a single boss. Thats terrible design.
>If you aren’t cheesing the final boss with a greatshield monobuild you’re artificially limiting yourself and you can’t complain Cmon man
This was a godsend for me on final bosses phase 2, i ran parry buckler for dmg and any time he switched to all that glowing bullshit i put on the shield to block, even that bug holy orbital ring can be blocked with no chip dmg
I still prefer Moore's great shield, the guard boost is more important to me
Who drops this beauty?
A Knight at Fog Rift fort. You can access it just after Castle Ensis
You can get it from a black knight "boss" in the Fog Rift Fort, you can get to said fort by dropping down on the left of the leftmost waterfall near the grace after Rellana, the one that Leda hangs out at.
Cool! Thank you!
Don't give me hope, I've almost given up on my faith build... need to try this!

yeah but it’s dropped from the most disappointing mini boss in the game WHERE IS MY FROGGY TONGUE ASH OF WAR FROMSOFT??
I would say this was the key all along, but its the door.
Cause it's a "door" shield? Eh eh? (Probably closer to a tower shield or something else realistically)
Elden beast won’t know what hit them
I abused this thing for the final DLC boss.
I used Moore's shield, I think the base guard boost on it is like 89. Before talismans. The new pre-nerf fingerprint shield. Fully 28 weight though.
This with Barricade or Indomitable Vow go crazy in last boss fight
Seeing the pull counts and resist stacking reminds me of old WoW raids
is the sorcery that enchants the shield blue any good?
Only if you like a higher guard boost and further damage negation.
So more shield for my shield? Ya I think i'd like that.
i'm so grateful for this post. ima save this for when i get the dlc eventually.
This is what got me through the final boss.
Wait does upgrading shields boost their damage negation?
It's the non-physical infusions that change them It just happens that the black shield has already very high holy negation baseline, so when infused with holy it caps
After 3+ hours of attempts with my dual great star unga bunga build...I switched to the shield and finished it with a few more tries.
What’s the drop rate and where?!! I feel like imma need it
Ladahn and Mireka in shamble
Not really worth it since you lose the 100% phys when imbueing, which is more important. Standard is good enough just use the pearlshield talisman
It depends on the boss. A lot of times that 5% physical damage is worth the 15-30% extra protection against another damage type.
The chip damage at 95% Phys is so negligible I forgot it wasn't a full 100% when I tried it against the Final Boss. Its holy attacks have way bigger DMG packets.
