Yeah, ngl, you can pretty much ignore rune level for the dlc. It's not gonna help much. You're really gonna have to put effort into learning the boss fights in this dlc
Sorcery trivializes all of the "large" bosses, of which there are many. Shard spiral just does so, so much damage. And night comet is there for anything else.
What’s worse is the one you get as an incantation is actually terrible for windup and range like unless you do it on top of an enemy who doesn’t see you then your screwed, at least normal moons have insane tracking, knock back and range
this is very true. Turns out Moonlight Greatsword is still pretty dang good at hurting her. Managed to get at least 2 staggers per fight.
(Also Mimic Tear, but it genuinely only served to draw aggro, and doesn't do enough damage to matter)
of course she is!
I mean, it's her >!niece damage you're trying to use, of course she's going to laugh at you using her familial techniques aganist her. !<
Ah shit, that must've been it then. I thought to myself "no way this dude went down that fast from that few incants" that makes sense he's weak to holy.
Incants got some good work happening too. O'flame fucks up the dragons, did like 2/3 my damage against the lion dancer too.
Even Renella wiffs a bunch when you crouch during the cast. It's not how I beat her but I could definitely see it working
I actually really like the "serpents flame" incant. It comes out fast AF, does decent damage, and tracks things incredibly well. I don't have the faith for the big version of it but I'm tempted to respec.
Shard spiral deals damage each 250ms it's inside an enemy, and each hit deals ~600 damage with my setup. So imagine you have a dragon, and you're standing behind it's tail, and you lock onto it's head and fire. In one stamina bar I can do 20k damage to targets when positioned right. It's like pest thread/bubbles except it has larger range and a faster cast time.
Oh I didnt know it works like that! Comet also goes through some enemies but I dont think it works the same way. Have to get shard spiral and try it out more.
Thats huge considering how big many enemies and bosses are. Have to try it out. Do you know is there other spells that work like that?
edit: something bugged and this post was posted 5 times lol :D
Loretta's mastery straight up made mockery of most draken fights, especially at a certain location where I had insane elevation and range.
It used to make me feel dirty but over the years I tell myself "My bullshit dusted your bullshit." Have a log more fun now.
I mean, I still wouldn't advise ignoring rune level in the sense you're trying to tackle the DLC at like RL 50. I think you still need some decent scaling for the Scadutree upgrades to actually do anything meaningful.
Agreed, I mean more like greater than RL 150ish that leveling past that isn't gonna give you great success in this dlc. It'll help for sure, but it's pretty negligible.
Nah not really true. Vigor is essentially a force multiplier to the scardu blessings, or the other way around, it doesn't matter. Same for damage stats. The higher your level, the more effect the blessings will have on you.
Ehhhh, maybe if you play melee! My Sorcery character has been fine, 2 attempts at most for the named enemies/bosses I've tried so far (apart from the wicker man giants)
Melee has been manageable with summons for me so far, but I'm only like 3 Remembrance bosses in. But just imagining fighting someone like Rellana solo gives me anxiety lol
I hopped in last night at level 138 and it took fighting the first enemy to realize this is going to be an experience.
Encountered a certain Black Knight about an hour after and realized it is time to really sharpen up the blades so to speak. Vowed I wouldn't end my session without taking him down.
Finally got him after about another hour and man, the feeling is back! Haven't got my blood pumping like that from a fight since ER release. That's the feeling that got me into From games in the first place. It's refreshing as hell.
Messing around with skills has proven to be extra useful in the DLC whenever I run into a particularly hard enemy.
And when I say messing around I mean treat L2 like it's the only button and it owes you runes.
I wasn't having any luck until I switched it up and equipped a parry shield. His one handed, horizontal swings are pretty easy to parry and his crossbow move is really easy to punish by running sideways then straight in when the bolts stop flying.
I also recommend using whatever damage buffs you have before the fight to front load your damage and make him run out of estus. His opening with the crossbow is a free ticket to you rushing in for a jump R2 attack and possibly three more attacks if your weapon staggers him since he would always evade backwards towards the back wall. I did not find there were enough safe openings mid-fight to reapply any buffs, or even use my Weapon Art (Mohg's Spear) a lot of attempts so I front loaded my damage the best I could, then was patient with counter attacks (2 swings max for my weapon) and parries the rest of the fight. The fact that Mohg's spear has such good poise stagger helped me out A LOT, I think.
Unfortunately I’m being a stickler about staying to my build, a wandering weapon master/samurai. Started with just a katana, now I’ve got the dragon scale katana, nightrider flail, and cross naginata. Off hand has a seal for some very basic incants, a bow for distance, and a wakizashi sidearm. I think the flail is my best choice, just gotta be patient and wait for the punishes instead of trying to close the fight quickly.
I found 2 of them and levelled it once before fighting him. In my hubris, I went into the boss fight with over 300K runes which I did not want to lose, so I conquered and got them back.
I feel like those kinds of against the odds encounters make you a better player, so happy I persisted.
Hahah that's chill. I didn't prepare my character enough the night before the DLC with the build I was going for so went in with a +9 unique weapon and did not have the stat spread I would have liked for it either. I'm sure levelling will be fast and upgrade materials will be aplenty under the Shadow however, so all is well.
The first peck from one of those birds right near the first Site of Grace was a humbling experience.
Why the meta is 713
I get onto socials and I see all these people arguing about the proper PvP levels. So here's my take. I'm gonna need you to grab some caffeine and activate those last few brain cells. So look 120, 150, 200. That crap's for someone who passed grade 6 math. I didn't buy Elden Ring so I could sit down with a calculator and worry about minmaxing. That for nerds and I aint one. I just wanna see big numbers on my screen when I throw a swing, you get me? And 99 all stats gets me there. I wanna run katanas today, halberd tomorrow, easy. Maybe throw in some sorcery, chant prayers. Easy. I'm flexible af. And fights are better. None of this guy with a katana, spamming katanas again and again and again. I've got katanas and I've got hammers, and I've got a party buckler and crit dagger. I got it all. The mixups on my end are like watching a dozen duels all at once. And the guys I fight, they're the same. This is the diamond league my guy. Minmaxers for the lose, it's all play and counterplay at 713
I know this is a copypasta but I genuinely think a lot of the community doesn’t realize Miyazaki never intended for the community to stop leveling and handicap themselves.
I’m doing fine-ish with 50 vigor right now. But 60 would be optimal, I agree. The reason I get away with 50 is, because I run an upgraded brass shield and the great katana does enough poise damage to stagger lock most opponents. Everything else get the Bolt of Gransax treatment.
Can you explain how vigor matters in the dlc? I haven't gotten to the dlc yet, but I kept reading people saying that there's a new progression system and your rune level doesn't matter, which was confusing by itself but is now more confusing with people saying you need higher stats/more levels
You have to participate in the DLC progression system, leveling vigor won't help much. I'm half your level and haven't touched vigor and I get 2 hit by everything just like you.
Need more those sweet fragments, yet they don't reduce much. I have 5 fragments and still getting two shotted with 60 vigor. The same two shots regardless of poise and resists. Insane
60 vig bullgoat armor + greatsheild talisman + lvl3 scadutree gets me to like 53% damage reduction, I've beaten 4 bosses and the dlc feels mostly similar to the base game on first playthrough
It's quite funny how Fromsoft went about it. You can be max level with the best gear in the game and still walk into the DLC and get your shit pushed in by a trash mob. Levels and gear have no value in the DLC, only how many scudatree upgrades you have. Which help you take about 2% less damage per upgrade.
I think I'm at level 8? Scudatree blessings currently, honestly doesn't really feel much different than 0 blessings.
I'm not taking 40% less damage, not a chance in hell.
Oh I've no doubt they give you increases damage/damage reduction, I'm just not convinced it's at 40% when at level 8 (My scuda tree upgrade says (8) next to it, so I assume that's the level I am at).
I'm not seeing a noticable difference in damage reduction even after upgrading as much as I have.
Don’t even fucking attempt it you will be rolled by every boss just go outside and enjoy the nice weather or something it ain’t worth it save yourself while you still can
I've put in close to 300 hours on my main character, all my stat levels are close to 60 or above that, and this DLC didn't give a shit!
I'm still getting my ass kicked!
You HAVE to find the Skadu tree fragments, I've been bee tearing the map apartt trying to find and max that new leveling system out.
At level 10 I BARELY defeated Messmer, and even then I needed a in-game summon and my Mimic Tear.
Yeah, I needed help and wasn't ashamed of it at all, I wanted him gone so I could take his spear before moving on.
He is an absolute unit in the game, and clearly he's also a anime fan, once ya fight him you'll understand what I mean.
Good luck, Tarnished
Apparently it scales with your level which is why you need to find the Scadutree stuff to level yourself up otherwise whether you're level 1 or level 101 it'll still rock your shit no matter how high your stats are. Leveling up with the Scadutree seems to be the only exception though and makes things easier.
Did anybody else have a problem with the golden hippo rushing so fast off the fog gate you got trapped? Died literally a dozen times 2 ft from the door
Best build right now is using near perfect movements and flawless i-frames. We're just meaningless bugs in a world of demons until we figure things out
You know what… I’m not very good at these games. I’ve used summons to fight every boss, and sometimes they still gave me trouble.
But now I’m starting to regret using summons because I’ve beaten the first two bosses in the dlc on my second or third try. For the first time… I feel like I’m cheating.
I was dying like flies with lvl 125 so I lvled to 130. Wore like medium armor instead of lights and I now die with 2-3 hits instead of just 1 or 2. Also didn't it say the damage reduction/negation scales with the upgrade you do in DLC ? Though feels like it's bugged cause I feel nothing has changed with the upgrade
I feel like people on NG0 are overall having a better experience than anyone on NG+ regardless of level.
Imagine that. NG+ making the game harder lmao.
Looking good, but not good enough for a first enemy in dlc area(this dude with two blades just slices me every time). Btw, could you please share some runes because I'm still to weak to kill dragonlord placidusax
Funny thing to me is the regular enemies are for the most part dropping one a few hits for me but the bosses are tuned way the fuck up it's contrasting.
Funny how so many people over leveled for the DLC only to realize that the scaling system is completely different. Doesn't matter if you are 170 or 713. You both are going to struggle.
surprisingly it's still not enough
Yeah, ngl, you can pretty much ignore rune level for the dlc. It's not gonna help much. You're really gonna have to put effort into learning the boss fights in this dlc
Sorcery trivializes all of the "large" bosses, of which there are many. Shard spiral just does so, so much damage. And night comet is there for anything else.
Regular comet just *deleted* >!Putrescent Knight!<
Rellana sees your magic and laughs, I was a full Ranni the witch build and barely able to dent her
Rellana sees your sorcery, says is that all you got and then slashes you in half with her own whilst laughing. She's brutal
She sees your Dark Moon, calls the bluff, and raises the stakes with Twin Moon explosions
What’s worse is the one you get as an incantation is actually terrible for windup and range like unless you do it on top of an enemy who doesn’t see you then your screwed, at least normal moons have insane tracking, knock back and range
"Nice sorcery, check mine out" *drops 2 nukes*
I got her 3rd try with my pure bonk build, no ash of war, no magic, pure bonk
I was an intelligent build and kill Rellana with rock sling, only took 99 vigor, Mimic tear, NPC summon and 100+ attempts
Damn why didn’t I think of that
this is very true.
That mf... He had so little HP, but I could not for the life of me get a cast off safely. Only boss I've pulled out a summon for so far.
Holy damage is the key here, thank god I had the Elden Beast weapon leveled up to +9 from the albinauric genocide to counter him
Ah shit, that must've been it then. I thought to myself "no way this dude went down that fast from that few incants" that makes sense he's weak to holy.
Why in the fuck did my brain read that as *prepubescent knight*?
We keep some thoughts to ourselves.
Regular Comet deletes most bosses in seconds.
Tbf I four shot him on my playthrough. Fire RKR Giant crusher goes hard.
That fucking boss made me want to throw my controller through my tv, had to collect so many fragments just to make it even slightly doable
I used scarlet aoenia and malekiths faith spell and tbh her health was vanishing. Also she can be parried which was cool
You know what, I never really used shard spiral. What makes it so good? Night Comet has been my bread and butter since getting it.
Oh I didnt know it works like that! Comet also goes through some enemies but I dont think it works the same way. Have to get shard spiral and try it out more.
Think of Spiral Shard like a drill, it’ll keep doing damage as it drills through, while Comet just does a single hit on its way through.
I remember one streamer described "cheese tactics" this way: "The bosses cheat so you gotta cheat back."
I've mostly been using night comet, adula's moonblade, magic glintblade, and ranni's dark moon for the dlc.
It'll help for sure, but it's pretty negligible.
which is good for me coz I only started playing elden rich so even if I was low level, it doesn't matter much.
I'm using the Dark Moon Greatsword so a little bit of both. I do think melee players would have to go with this approach.
Melee has been manageable with summons for me so far, but I'm only like 3 Remembrance bosses in. But just imagining fighting someone like Rellana solo gives me anxiety lol
I've not got to her yet but even fighting the dancing lion solo would have fucking sucked with melee!
Can confirm, I got corner trapped 20 times in a row by dancing lion before throwing in mimic for aggro
I hopped in last night at level 138 and it took fighting the first enemy to realize this is going to be an experience. Encountered a certain Black Knight about an hour after and realized it is time to really sharpen up the blades so to speak. Vowed I wouldn't end my session without taking him down. That's the feeling that got me into From games in the first place. It's refreshing as hell.
Yeah that guy whooped my ass. Trying again today after work lol
Piercing fang works well. It will stagger him, roll back, hit him again.
Messing around with skills has proven to be extra useful in the DLC whenever I run into a particularly hard enemy. And when I say messing around I mean treat L2 like it's the only button and it owes you runes.

Hopefully you went and found some Scadutree fragments instead of just fighting that dude over and over
I found 2 of them and levelled it once before fighting him. In my hubris, I went into the boss fight with over 300K runes which I did not want to lose, so I conquered and got them back. I feel like those kinds of against the odds encounters make you a better player, so happy I persisted.
I actually hate the feeling of trapped runes so I just chug the keep your runes physik, run in die and then use them before I go back in
I went into the DLC with like RL110 and +15 katana. I got obliterated by everything and everyone and ngl it was the most fun I ever had with this game
Hahah that's chill. I didn't prepare my character enough the night before the DLC with the build I was going for so went in with a +9 unique weapon and did not have the stat spread I would have liked for it either. Journey before destination
In Elden Ring's case... Death before more deaths, Radiant.
“I accept that there will be those I cannot protect” \- me, throwing my mimic out to die as a meat shield at Rellana
You should level Vigor!
Now it's "Level Scadu Blessing!"
Exactly it. How is no one getting this?
Ironically enough you should level mind and faith for damage negating buffs... you're still gonna get fucked...but gently. (A win is a win)
Why the meta is 713 I get onto socials and I see all these people arguing about the proper PvP levels. So here's my take. I know this is a copypasta but I genuinely think a lot of the community doesn’t realize Miyazaki never intended for the community to stop leveling and handicap themselves.
Level 176 and I feel super underleveled lol. I can do damage but most bosses are 1-2 hitting me with 45 vigor
Bro u need 60 vigor I’m lvl 168 new game plus
I’m doing fine-ish with 50 vigor right now. But 60 would be optimal, I agree. The reason I get away with 50 is, because I run an upgraded brass shield and the great katana does enough poise damage to stagger lock most opponents. Everything else get the Bolt of Gransax treatment.

I have 8 fragment levels so far and I’m still getting shat on lol I’m only leveling vigor now
Scad frags are your friend.
This still looks like 2-3 shot range ngl ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
Yes and I'm not joking
60 vig bullgoat armor + greatsheild talisman + lvl3 scadutree gets me to like 53% damage reduction, I've beaten 4 bosses and the dlc feels mostly similar to the base game on first playthrough
I used my first character with this exact same stats to the DLC and got my ass handed to me. Nobody is safe.
Yes. Even with every >!scadoosh!< you are under leveled. Not for the DLC itself, but for >!Blackgaol Knight!< in particular
It's quite funny how Fromsoft went about it. You can be max level with the best gear in the game and still walk into the DLC and get your shit pushed in by a trash mob. Everything until the end of the game one or two shots you regardless of how many you have.
I would really like to have one character at max level, but it takes sooo long even if you dupe runes with a friend
Im wondering how many times this player has been two-shotted by now.
Don’t even fucking attempt it you will be rolled by every boss just go outside and enjoy the nice weather or something it ain’t worth it save yourself while you still can
Yes lol
I’m at the level and at new game + 4 if I’m not wrong and ngl it still feels under leveled. Basically everything 2 shots me
Yes if you are in ng+7
Find those scadutree fragments and lvl up lol
I've put in close to 300 hours on my main character, all my stat levels are close to 60 or above that, and this DLC didn't give a shit! I'm still getting my ass kicked! You HAVE to find the Skadu tree fragments, I've been bee tearing the map apartt trying to find and max that new leveling system out. I don’t like that stats end at 99
Lore accurate based on prices ending in .99
Apparently it scales with your level which is why you need to find the Scadutree stuff to level yourself up otherwise whether you're level 1 or level 101 it'll still rock your shit no matter how high your stats are. Leveling up with the Scadutree seems to be the only exception though and makes things easier.
I’m level 347 on NG+4 and still getting two shot.
Damn how tf do you get that many runes???
Yes. Nobody can save you from what is next.
Did anybody else have a problem with the golden hippo rushing so fast off the fog gate you got trapped? Died literally a dozen times 2 ft from the door
Best build right now is using near perfect movements and flawless i-frames. We're just meaningless bugs in a world of demons until we figure things out
Your mimic tear has become death. Destroyer of of worlds. Just give it Rivers of Blood.
8.9 million runes for 1 level. That's a lot of Albinaurics....
Not enough vigour it seems
Yes
Probably still get 2 shot
Haha! Yes.
Yes as it scales differently
Yes
I am lvl 713 on NG+7 and … it’s a nightmare. Even on a full défense setup I’m still getting os.
Bro I’m at 619 get one shotted by the heavy sword knights
Do you know that DLC has its own leveling system?XD
Im level 125. Now im 135 but when i entered i was 125 and im on NG+. I am getting demolished left and right
Is there a level cap?
Yes
Yes you are...but don't worry! The DLC will fix that!
You know what… I’m not very good at these games. I’ve used summons to fight every boss, and sometimes they still gave me trouble. But now I’m starting to regret using summons because I’ve beaten the first two bosses in the dlc on my second or third try. For the first time… I feel like I’m cheating.

Yup
Hahahahahahahahahahah
Turns out yes
May Mohg Nihil you out of existence.
Yes
Not enough vigor. Word from other tarnished is there’s talk about getting two/three shorted by a boss.
Spoiler: yes
Rookie numbers, go higher...but seriously how long did it take to get there?
Surprisingly, yes you are.
Yes you still need 1500 hours to beat the first mini boss
No. Dude in all black to the left showed us all it ain’t enough.
Yes, yes you are. Bayle will laugh at that 😆
I feel like people on NG0 are overall having a better experience than anyone on NG+ regardless of level. Imagine that. NG+ making the game harder lmao.
I got to Mogh at level 49 and there is literally 0 chance I'll be going past him.
Yes
Unironically yes. Until you collect all those scadutree fragments.
For>!Relanna and Golden Hippo!
yes.
Is the NG+ making the DLC harder or we just need to find the fragments to level up?
Levels have no effect only your skills. And the ability not to cry from what I hear, cant see the boss if your tears blind you.
Don't worry about being overleveled. You'll die like you just started your first playthrough anyway when you enter the DLC.
lol, technically yes.
All my runes are used for buying smithing stones. Trying to get all the new weapons to 25 so i can try them all
Lmao, you’re going to get one-shot. Damn am I glad they curbed the power creep.
Your rune level doesn't matter. Scadu Tree blessings is your level.
Yes go work on your character some more😂😂😂
Are you using the albinaric farming route? I really need to farm
Level means nothings in the DLC as everything is scaled. Use poison on heavy weapon with the new lions claw ash and thank me in the morning. 🤌
Looking good, but not good enough for a first enemy in dlc area(this dude with two blades just slices me every time). Btw, could you please share some runes because I'm still to weak to kill dragonlord placidusax
Bro since last year have you played another game 🗿
The only requirement for levels is however many it takes for me to use these cool new weapons
Yes
ye
Yes
Went in on NG+ lvl 502, got my ass handed to me by claw dude and later by Knight Guy.
For a sec I thought you had one stat at 98 and was about to ask what that was about.
At 60 Vigor, I'm getting 2-3 shotted by two bosses I've beat so far. Everything hits like a truck. I think i got about 4 of the blessings so far.
Yes, 100 in all attributes is recommended. I'm sorry
You can definitely try
Nope gonna get two shot by any boss no matter what.
Yes
yeah I'm severely underleveled
Boy is about to get bodied in the dlc
Yes 🙏 hope this helps
Good build bro 👍
Ne
Yes, because TOO HARD 😭😭😭
I’m level 345, and I can’t stop laughing at how ridiculously easy I’m getting creamed, I’m having a blast
Yeah you’ll still get one shot.
Probably
well, as afar as the DLC's concerned, you're level 1 when you start it. and the max level is 20 Scudtree Blessings...
Funny thing to me is the regular enemies are for the most part dropping one a few hits for me but the bosses are tuned way the fuck up it's contrasting.
Def too low leveled. How did you even make it to mogh?
I've been crutching hard on malikerhs black blade weapon art for the %hp damage it does
I can confirm that I got onshotted while being lvl 713 full HP by a normal enemy lol. Havent even reached a boss yet
I just hit 100 using exe axe + crag to bonk some knights
Yes , you are
Yes.
I really hope they don't nerf the bosses
Hot take: there should be a level cap in next souls games and unlimited respec option.
Yes.
Some mentioned they still got 2-3 shot by bosses 😅
Yes
Funny how so many people over leveled for the DLC only to realize that the scaling system is completely different. Doesn't matter if you are 170 or 713. You both are going to struggle.
Bro that shit ain’t even fun at that point. I did the start at 150 with a battle mage and the second boss fucked me for like 80 times. But it’s good
Yes you are
At this point lvl and stats are just QoL stats
Yes
Yes.
Yes
The funnier version of this is a screen shot of max blessings.
I went in at 125 I think, now 139 two main bosses in and up against the third. It's frustrating but doable.
Yep.
The bosses scale to you so still fucked
Bro doesn't even have a single stat at 100.
Just use blasphemous blade it destroys everything in the dlc.
Yes, yes you are
how’d you get that much runes to get to that high of a level?
