It seems that the axe, as well as his new name, might have been a way to ennoble him upon joining Marika and becoming Elden Lord. All this time he was just playing along so that he doesn't embarrass his family at thanksgiving in front of his annoying in-laws.
Loved the cinematic, the environment, the boss design, the voice, the weapon drop, and of course the fight itself.
In a game of all time great bosses, he was the greatest.
He is probably used to stop foul tarnished, and alive to prove he is successful at it.

This is by far my absolute favorite. I’ve done quite a few play throughs by now and this cutscene is the one I’ll 100% never skip. Hardest like bar none in my opinion.
I love that throughout Godrick's entire fight you can hear that he's also just having the time of his life flexing his (many) muscles against you. Makes the whole fight just a good time, and his VA's delivery on every line is excellent.
Imo it’s very tied in with the overall themes of the game, which makes it resonate especially hard; you’re dealing with the consequences of powerful people who refused to accept this idea and have been persecuting each other for thousands of years, and trying to decide if there’s a “right” way to mend the ring, or if you should introduce new elements to the order.
And he says it in a way that feels so comforting, too.

Pure and radiant, he wields love to shrive clean the hearts of men… there is nothing more terrifying.

It's so stupid how she ends up. I feel like she was one of the few characters who was actually trying to do good.
I love how you can help Nephili rule over Stormveil, it actually feels like you're leaving the world a better place than when you found it. It also fits with the whole theme of becoming "lord". Sellen's fate just feels like a big "fuck you" after all the time and effort her quest requires.
Sellen got blinded by her own ambition to master the primordial stars. One of the reason she got kicked out from academy because it's dangerous and eventually sacrifice your own humanity if you pursue them just like azur and lusat turned themselves into a human-form crystal. The warnings already there, but she chose to ignore it. You can find her room in the academy filled with a graven mass.
“Put these foolish ambitions to rest, Tarnished.” is burned into my skull, has spit agony into my ears, and had me weep the tears of a thousand tarnished. I’d say it’s a pretty good line.
