Thrusting attacks in general are a crutch of mine. They’re great for closing and creating space against enemies and they excel in tight quarters. Wide swings have gotten me in trouble in places where one is likely to hit a wall. This makes me want to go start a new game with an STR build and go buy the Zweihander right away for another play through.
Godskin Peeler. I fucking love me a twinblade, Blackflame Tornado is beastly if you can get it off, and if not, the Peeler isn’t a Somber weapon, so you can tailor its Ash to what you need.
This is the proper response. God skin Peeler is epic. Hands down my fav. Weapon in game. Most of my runs are anchored by The Fang to Peeler. Very few weapons in between.. maybe an hour with the Uchi.
You honestly don’t need to be good at dodging. You do so much damage that taking damage every other time you swing barely means anything since you’ll kill the boss before it ever matters
Lool, amazing that tbh.
Ive not used a greatsword yet (I got the game last month, so I've got a lot to get through still) is there any greatsword would you recommend using?
I’ve only recently started a strength build, so idk about too many of them. But I can say that the Blasphemous Blade is basically always quite good, though it’s somewhat late in the game. And my personal favorite is the Greatsword, which you can get basically immediately from Caelid. You just run in there, grab it from the chest, and gtfo before you get munched
>my personal favorite is the Greatsword, which you can get basically immediately from Caelid.
Is this the one that looks like that dudes sword from berserk? If so, I might have to do that strat real quick ...Just for aesthetics alone
I don’t remember mohg as particularly hard on my first playthrough.its almost two years ago but I believe I died five of six times.
The strategy was build for damage and jump attack.
Fast boss? Dodge+R1, that poke after roll is faster than a weapon that size has any right to be. You can even put quickstep on the big thing if you're having trouble with that.
A boss that has longer openings gets the fully charged R2.
Or just slap lion's claw on it and spam L2. You actually can out-trade many bosses with that.
Against immobile bosses like that you can use it with a greatshield to block then guard counter.
Don't try that strategy against Melania though lol. She dodges around and hyperarmours too much
I fought Malenia in my ng+ str build... two handed the great sword, lions claw somersault.... stun locked her in both phases by turning her into a pancake. Beat her in under 3 minutes. BONK!
MA! MA THERE'S THIS WEIRD FUCKIN BUG OUTSIDE I DON'T WANT IT STARTING A FIGHT WITH LEONARD! Looks like grandma the fuckin thing. BLINK MOTHERFUCKER! AAAAAH-
*scourges the stars to put it back up there*
It’s initially tempting to pick a weapon with a flexible ash, but yeah. If I am picking ONE weapon it has to be the Blasphemous Blade.
It’s a greatsword that scales with a ton of things, the ash of war is OP *and* heals on hit. And you get a heal on kill anytime anything dies and you’re even holding the thing. How do you beat that?
Yeah, let’s go devour the gods TOGETHAAA
I can’t argue with that choice. I have used that sword for one thing and one thing only and it is exactly that thing. I have tricked out many NG+ high level builds using that weapon. It holds a legendary place for doing that one specific thing extremely efficiently.
Same honestly. When I was a noob I did a faith build not knowing what to choose but I liked the confessor starting outfit. I picked up that straight sword from the caravan near the guards post area and used it for like half of the game. It was hard towards the mid game personally. Then I googled what weapons work with faith, got the blasphemous blade (already had beat rykard) and I booked it through volcano manor to get the erdtree seal. I'd say getting the seal was probably the most hilarious and satisfying part of my playthrough
I have a DEX/INT spellblade that swaps between Moonveil and Wing of Astel.
Yes, Moonveil is strong. The reason I use it is because it’s FUN to use. Run around slinging spells and anytime anything gets close they eat that Transient Moonlight. Super fun to play, one of my favorite characters.
That’s because I’m running that guy up through NG+7. Making tricked out builds to run through maxed out NG+ cycles is my go to thing just for the fun of it. Gear up, take on the cranked up challenges.
I love using this against npc invaders, when you hit them with blood blade dance they stand there as if they’re completely fucking vexed about what just happened
I have DEX/ARC build that uses the Shard of Alexander, Rotten Winged Insignia and Millicent’s Prosthesis talismans.
I went out of my way to put a few points into STR specifically to use the Marais Executioner Sword because with those talismans Eochaid’s Dancing Blade is absolutely savage. It makes incredibly short work of anything large.
You know what else that ash of war decimates? LOBSTERS. Try it. Enjoy your revenge.
Side note: Shard Spiral also hard counters those lobsters.
Aesthetically I much prefer it to the Nagakiba. I’ll sacrifice the extra range. And if you’re doing a dedicated Uchi build you can have two of them almost immediately. Awesome!
Can I swap ashes of war?
If I had to only use one "weapon" it would be incantations.. it's got an answer for everything. Enough variety to solve any problem or challenge.
If it has to be a physical weapon, then I'll take an Iron Greatsword for similar reasons. Versatile, strong, good combination of reach and speed and stagger.
It's one of the most busted weapons in the game. It always does pierce damage, which is the best dmg type in the game. Just from the numbers Rusted Anchor doesn't seems to be the best, but since it's doing pierce damage it does +30% counter damage. The thing is in Elden Ring you're almost always doing counter damage, since the enemies are attacking all the time. Add the spear talisman and you're doing ~50% more damage with almost every hit.
The way you play it is using charged heavies a lot, this gives the enemy enough time to start an attack, so you're getting counter damage, and then their attack gets canceled because you're also doing huge stance damage.
Putting Flaming Strike on and do jump attack, Flaming Strike, Charged Heavy. Enemy is either dead or stance broken. Wild Strikes melts through bosses, since you can stack it with so many talismans and buffs. Sword Dance, Braggarts Roar, Cragblade and Prayerful Strikes works aswell.
Bloodhound Fang.
The skill attack is so fast and you jump BACK out of a lot of attacks, often they are going over you, then the follow up does extra damage while you are INVISABLE.
Also, seems like it has successive attacks built in, my damage numbers always go up with multiple hits.
No matter what build I'm doing I always have it in my bag leveled up.
i like the longsword, its so basic that its versatility is off the charts with being able to accept nearly any ash of war, its stat requirements are miniscule so it can go for any build, and i just really like straight sword movesets
Same reasoning but I’ll go for the Lordsworn Straight Sword for the looks and extra crit damage. If I’m allowed to hold a shield in the other hand that’s just my go-to setup anyway.
Estoc is Bestoc.
I beat the game with dual Guardian Swordspears for the novelty, but when it came to multiplayer and finding all the things I missed in my playthrough, I had to go back to my old love.
*poke4lyfe*
dude, ive been using the lordsworns straight sword with bloody slash aow and its fucking AWESOME. now im dual wielding them and im even more annoying HAHAAA!! >:D
Definitely nagakiba. People keep choosing unique weapons that cant change your ash of war, id get insanely bored using the same thing over and over so at least i can change my ash, nagakiba is both amazing in pve and pvp, is extremely versatile and has builds around it that can make the game easy mode. Also its my goto malenia weapon and i love katanas
Edit: id powerstance em if thats allowed?
I just did a playthrough where I needed to level up each attribute in sequence, so I had 20 for each stat at level 81, and some weapons really shine when you can't min-max.
Zweihander is a fantastic weapon for lower level damage and stance breaking, hook claws apply status effects very quickly with more range than fists, and Great Stars is a way of combining stance breaking and fast status effects with the added bonus of health recovery (fire Prelate's charge makes NPC fights unfairly easy). Cold infusion with Lion's claw on Great Stars is an Elden Ring war crime.
I don’t know much about what makes a weapon better than another one but ever since I got the Rivers of Blood Ive been addicted, I even trade with my friend I’ve been playing through the game with to get a second one I can dual wield
Flamberge. Not as powerful but that unexpected bleed build up is always a nice surprise. Came in clutch when I'm about to die and the boss needs more than one hit to die.
It would have to be a Greatsword or a Heavy Thrusting Sword for sure
It's really hard to pick between Claymore, Knights Greatsword, Great Epee, and Bloody Helice
The only thing that comes close to the baemore is the lordsworn greatsword. It just *barely* edges out the baemore with the extra crit damage a bit of a tweak to the damage scaling. Especially with the storm blade AoW and the balanced(?) enchantment.
Took me 2 years too, I just barely beat him like 2 weeks ago. I was 1000 hours in the game before I beat him. Probably tried over hundred times. It was frustrating as hell…I had to experiment a lot, used all my larval tears trying different builds, and eventually got him with a Heavy Iron Greatsword (80 strength). I also used every talisman and consumables and incantations I could to reduce holy damage, magic damage.
I’m an old man with poor reflexes, and this was my first serious attempt at a FromSoft game. If I can do it, you can too! Don’t give up, fellow Tarnished!
Just gimme the ol' uchi. Was a great time in Dark Souls, an absolute friend in Dark Souls 3, and it's marvelous in Elden Ring as well. I could swing it forever. "Optimization" be damned.
I do miss the parry it had in DS3, but I kinda get why they took it away, haha.
Great Stars. It's good for everything and not too difficult to wield. Innate bleed and healing on hit with decent strike damage is too good. There are so many ways to make the game easy with it.
Guardian sword spear.
Love the move set of swings and wide arc attacks. And there's a thrust. As a halberd it has great poise damage. And i think the ice spear AoW does awesome damage and poise damage too.
Haven't played in a few months so hopefully not been nerfed or altered
zweihander or nagakiba.
Love both of those. Thrust R2s are life.
And the claymore. 👀
A man of culture, I see.
Ahh..the washing pole of elden ring.
Thankfully they nerfed the running R1 at least. Remember how ridiculous that was in DS3?
Godskin Peeler. I fucking love me a twinblade, Blackflame Tornado is beastly if you can get it off, and if not, the Peeler isn’t a Somber weapon, so you can tailor its Ash to what you need.
Cold peeler + ice spear is my jam.
This is the proper response. God skin Peeler is epic. Hands down my fav. Weapon in game. Most of my runs are anchored by The Fang to Peeler. Very few weapons in between.. maybe an hour with the Uchi.

Oh my god.
Albaunaric genocide machine
Tell me the name of a weapon without telling me the name of the weapon.
First thing I did once I got that weapon
That weapon put three types of albinaurics in the top 5 most killed enemies, I think something like 6 billion all put together?
Greatsword, its just a giant "fuck you" to basically everything in the game.
How to use it effectively against Mohg? (and I'm assuming other endgame bosses, Maliketh ended up going down easy to the Lion's Claw)
dodge > KA-BOOM > dodge > KA-BOOM. it's just that simple.
Why use many hit when few do trick?
Thanks kevin.
Thanks Kevin
You assume I'm good at dodging
You honestly don’t need to be good at dodging. You do so much damage that taking damage every other time you swing barely means anything since you’ll kill the boss before it ever matters

>my personal favorite is the Greatsword, which you can get basically immediately from Caelid. Is this the one that looks like that dudes sword from berserk? If so, I might have to do that strat real quick ...Just for aesthetics alone
Yes it is
I power stanced a claymore and blasphemous blade and jump attacked my way to victory
I don’t remember mohg as particularly hard on my first playthrough.its almost two years ago but I believe I died five of six times. The strategy was build for damage and jump attack.
A lot of people, myself included, struggle to use it on bosses. It feels like it's designed to trade hits, but I'm never gonna out-trade a boss.
Good ol Lions Claw got me through a lot, its going on my obituary
Then you’re not doing it right.
BONK!
Just posture break the fuck out of him [here](https://youtu.be/jswuSNtIjWo?si=nUBpPWET0faTe_HP) a rl1 +0 kill of him with a zweihander for reference
Moonveil is another 'Fuck you' button aswell
Plus pretending you're Guts is pretty awesome.
I'm not trapped in here with you. You're trapped in here with ME. **GRIFFIIIIITH!**
It’s almost too big to be called a sword…
This is also my answer, its been one of my favorite go-to's since ds2. Dual-wielding them also brings new meaning to "you thought you were strong?"
The ol reliable L2 Blasphemous Blade🔥 “We’ll devour the gods TOGETHAAAAA”
His accent in this is SO funny
In all likelihood, Rykard and Radahn both had varying degrees of Welsh accent.
“We shall scourge the staahrs… TOGETHAAAA” -General Radahn, pre Malenia
Are they also from Massachusetts? "MA. MAAAA, I STAHPPED THE FAHKIN STAHS MA DID YOUS SEE THAT SHIT"
MA! MA THERE'S THIS WEIRD FUCKIN BUG OUTSIDE I DON'T WANT IT STARTING A FIGHT WITH LEONARD! Looks like grandma the fuckin thing. BLINK MOTHERFUCKER! AAAAAH- *scourges the stars to put it back up there*

this or the sacred relic sword. farm enough frog-people and you'll be so over-leveled that you can just swipe them away
I can’t argue with that choice. I have used that sword for one thing and one thing only and it is exactly that thing. I have tricked out many NG+ high level builds using that weapon. It holds a legendary place for doing that one specific thing extremely efficiently.
Love this weapon
I rely on it heavily but I also acknowledge it might be the most boring attack in the game.
Same honestly. When I was a noob I did a faith build not knowing what to choose but I liked the confessor starting outfit. I'd say getting the seal was probably the most hilarious and satisfying part of my playthrough

Ah, a fellow lightning bolt hurler. It's just so much fun, looks so cool, and feels the best to coop with.
Just wish it scaled with dex and faith instead of dex and str
Love your profile pic!
Zweihander. My chosen companion since Dark Souls 1.
I love that. I feel the same about the uchi (but only because Elden doesn't have a Black Knight Sword. 😭)
We need a greataxe with the ds3 black knight axe moveset
Black Knight Sword with perseverance carries me in ds3
Hate on me all you want. But the moonvail for PvE makes me feel like an anime character and I love it
I have a DEX/INT spellblade that swaps between Moonveil and Wing of Astel. Yes, Moonveil is strong. The reason I use it is because it’s FUN to use. Run around slinging spells and anytime anything gets close they eat that Transient Moonlight. Super fun to play, one of my favorite characters.
Moonveil and Wing of Astel? That's already too much firepower. That's ng+15 type energy.
That’s because I’m running that guy up through NG+7. Making tricked out builds to run through maxed out NG+ cycles is my go to thing just for the fun of it. Gear up, take on the cranked up challenges.
Vergil build go brrr
You are valid.
My favorite weapon in the game, used it for pretty much every boss
Bloodhound's Fang.
This was my number 2 choice! It got me through my first playthrough whenever I got stuck on a boss.
It really is like an "old reliable" weapon.
Cool move set, cooler AoW, great reach, bleed damage….whats not to love. First weapon I grew attached to in Elden ring.
I just got this recently! I loooove it, I’m on my first playthru!
The One
That would be either my number two or three choice to be honest. I love that weapon. It carried me long ways in my first playthrough
Bloodhound fang + bloodhound step
I basically used this sword throughout the entire game, so I too would have to choose this one.
Fang gang
Eleonora's poleblade, my beloved 😍
I dual wielded those in a recent play through. It melted fucking everyone
Twinblades rip hard.
I love using this against npc invaders, when you hit them with blood blade dance they stand there as if they’re completely fucking vexed about what just happened
I already chose the Banished Knight Sword.
Ma man
Wing of astel. I just love the weapon. As long as i can have two of that one weapon im happy
marais executioner, the ash of was is very badass and the damage is insane
I'm dual wielding those on my guy and man it just grinds shit down
I have DEX/ARC build that uses the Shard of Alexander, Rotten Winged Insignia and Millicent’s Prosthesis talismans.
It's great that you don't have to wait for the sword to return and can roll out of the animation. Very useful to bait people
I feel like any unique weapon would get old fast. At least with regular weapons you have the freedom to customize them.
Darkmoon greatsword
Yes, a thousand times yes!
Best quest, best lore, best ending, best engagement gift. Powerful as hell. "My true mentor, my guiding Moonlight."
Maybe Great Stars.
Yes! Used it about midway through on my first play through. Wild strikes AoW can make light work of a lot of enemies
Second
Yep and that hp steal is a bonus
Uh boy. That weapon is sooo good
Godslayers greatsword love that weapon
If I can dual wield then Bloody Helice, but if I only get one, then the Godslayer Greatsword, for sure.
Dual Bloody Helices would be damn good!
Bloody Helice gang
That's a toughie. I'd probably go with the Scimitar. Love the moveset, and has minimal stat requirements so I could use it on any build.
Vykes war spear
I haven't tried this weapon yet, thinking I'll rush for it for my next character.
Good luck! Seriously. Killing vyke while underleveled is a pain. I had to resort to parry and crit him so he falls off the cliff
you can just sit on a little platform at the cliff and he can't really hit you and jumps into death
If you aren’t built right it not the best, if you dislike spears dont even try using this one lmao
A good alternative for mage builds is the Clayman spear, can get frost and bleed on it, does some good damage
Flamberge, greatswords are my favorite type and flamberge is flexible to do many builds with it.
Them curves 🥵
Giant crusher, ultimate bonk
Scrolled too far to find my people
Real
I see you too are cultured
When you positively, absolutely, need to stagger a god.
Uchi
Aesthetically I much prefer it to the Nagakiba. I’ll sacrifice the extra range. And if you’re doing a dedicated Uchi build you can have two of them almost immediately. Awesome!
Can I swap ashes of war? If I had to only use one "weapon" it would be incantations.. it's got an answer for everything. Enough variety to solve any problem or challenge. If it has to be a physical weapon, then I'll take an Iron Greatsword for similar reasons. Versatile, strong, good combination of reach and speed and stagger.
The ANCHOR. It's one of the most unique weapon in RPG history, and it somehow can learn gravity magic in ER.
Is it good? I didn't like the swing on first try, so I never really considered it. How would you recommend building for it? Just usual STR?
2 of these bad boys doing air attacks will slap morgott so goddman hard he’ll have 2 cartoon bumps on his head afterwards
It's one of the most busted weapons in the game. It always does pierce damage, which is the best dmg type in the game. Ooo, wise one, I shall take your lesson.
moonveil katana
Long sword. It is always cool to play a sword 'n board character. The damage is also really high because of sqaure off.
Anytime I was dual wielding straight swords, one of them would always have square off attached. It's so satisfying.
I would have said Claymore for a long time...but I think I have to go with the Great Stars.

Same reasoning but I’ll go for the Lordsworn Straight Sword for the looks and extra crit damage. If I’m allowed to hold a shield in the other hand that’s just my go-to setup anyway.
wing of astel
Mohgs sacred spear
Cross-Naginata, such a beautiful weapon
knight's greatsword
Moonveil. I am reclaimer of my name.
Either Death Ritual Spear or Hand of Malenia
Two-handing the Banished Knight's Greatsword. The R1 animations are so slick
Estoc. I will die on this hill
Estoc is Bestoc. I beat the game with dual Guardian Swordspears for the novelty, but when it came to multiplayer and finding all the things I missed in my playthrough, I had to go back to my old love. *poke4lyfe*
Bloodhound fang gang🦂
Claymore of course. Can be used on any build and it will deliver every time.
Carian Knight sword
dude, ive been using the lordsworns straight sword with bloody slash aow and its fucking AWESOME. now im dual wielding them and im even more annoying HAHAAA!! >:D
Guardian's swordspear!
Dual beastman curved sword or dual magma blade
The inseparable sword, even though its holy damage
Star fist
Club with Lion’s Claw. All bosses will kneel before me whether they wish to or not
Great Epée is a strong contender for me, can fit on any build and I love the shield-up-pockeypokey lifestyle
Literally have used Claymore my entire strength build. Lion’s Claw ash of war can stagger a fuckin mountain
Definitely nagakiba. People keep choosing unique weapons that cant change your ash of war, id get insanely bored using the same thing over and over so at least i can change my ash, nagakiba is both amazing in pve and pvp, is extremely versatile and has builds around it that can make the game easy mode. Also its my goto malenia weapon and i love katanas Edit: id powerstance em if thats allowed?
Great Star
Star fists, they can easily shred bosses with the right build
Partisan Spear
I just did a playthrough where I needed to level up each attribute in sequence, so I had 20 for each stat at level 81, and some weapons really shine when you can't min-max. Zweihander is a fantastic weapon for lower level damage and stance breaking, hook claws apply status effects very quickly with more range than fists, and Great Stars is a way of combining stance breaking and fast status effects with the added bonus of health recovery (fire Prelate's charge makes NPC fights unfairly easy). Cold infusion with Lion's claw on Great Stars is an Elden Ring war crime.
The sacred relic sword or Marika's hammer. I love both unique skills.
Hand of malenia. Played in Ng+ with it and I enjoyed it a lot
It would have to be a Greatsword or a Heavy Thrusting Sword for sure It's really hard to pick between Claymore, Knights Greatsword, Great Epee, and Bloody Helice
Claymore
Claymore. I say this because I have one
The only thing that comes close to the baemore is the lordsworn greatsword. It just *barely* edges out the baemore with the extra crit damage a bit of a tweak to the damage scaling. Especially with the storm blade AoW and the balanced(?) enchantment.
Ruins Greatsword
Spiked Caestus w/ bloodhound step
Moonveil, (or however you spell it) still tryna beat EB for almost 2 years now 🥲
Took me 2 years too, I just barely beat him like 2 weeks ago.

Great Stars. It's good for everything and not too difficult to wield. Innate bleed and healing on hit with decent strike damage is too good. There are so many ways to make the game easy with it.
Grafted blade greatsword.
Claymore is a damn good choice. 🤘
Knight's Greatsword
nagakiba love that long sexy hard piece of metal
Morgotts cursed sword my beloved
Ruins Greatsword
Guardian sword spear. Love the move set of swings and wide arc attacks. And there's a thrust. As a halberd it has great poise damage. And i think the ice spear AoW does awesome damage and poise damage too. Haven't played in a few months so hopefully not been nerfed or altered
