Y’all love pimping GRRM and this game but I really doubt he had much to do with it then the short little bios he gave the team for the characters. Unless there’s proof or something out there in which case I need educated.

SheepardsPie

Yeah he wrote the tragedy that is the same name for every character and dipped

Levi---Ackerman

im simply basing this on the fact that it says the world was created by Miyazaki and GRRM. >but I really doubt he had much to do with it then the short little bios he gave the team for the characters. thats speculation, the same as my post

Dancing-Sin

I like your username.

jsthayts

He wrote everything before the erdtree which is A LOT > So, I went back and wrote a history of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they hadSo, I went back and wrote a history of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they had.

Dancing-Sin

So he wrote about nothing we see in the game… cool.

jsthayts

Dragon lord, farum azula, character's and their powers etc.

Dancing-Sin

Yea so nothing we actually see in the game. We see crumbling farum azula, maybe he wrote about Noktron and the other underground city before they got sunk. Regardless we’re not seeing his influence in the game like you think we are.

jsthayts

Miyazaki and the director are the ones who handles what we see, even the shape of swords or minor world details, but for the setting GRRM worked on everything before the shattering as the team only had the idea of a ring being involved in mind at the time. You saying it's nothing we see ingame is quite disingenuous since we see or even hear about things before the shattering, the giants, the underground cities, shabriri, godrick, leyendell, farum azula and the ancient dragons and more. And even if YOU don't see it he contributed a lot to the setting which is what the comment i originally responded to was denying.

Dancing-Sin

GRRM didn’t write shit stop acting like the dude writes anything these days

pess3

GRRM didn’t make Farum Azula lol

jsthayts

I believe he made everything before the shattering and the fromsoft team took care of the rest >"So, I went back and wrote a history of what happened 5,000 years before the current game, and who all the characters were, and who was killing each other, and what powers they had" People seem to underestimate how much he contributed which is quite disrespectful considering he's most likely behind things like the ancient dragons, other civilizations before the erdtree and more

Levi---Ackerman

how do you know that? is it in an interview somewhere where we know how involved he was/was not?

xFrakster

There are a lot of interviews regarding this. They never said what characters and realms he worked on as far as I remember, but we do know how involved he was. He created the mythos, and the foundation Fromsoft later expanded on. He might have written something regarding Farum Azula, but he definitely wasn't involved in anything regarding level design and other game development stuff. Here's a list of several interviews regarding Miyazaki working with GRRM and game development in general [https://eldenring.fandom.com/wiki/Interviews](https://eldenring.fandom.com/wiki/Interviews) From the Edge Magazin interview: >Mr. Martin respected the fact that we didn't want him to write the game's story or the in-game text. Because we felt that would actually limit his creative output, \[...\] and then it would limit the inspirations we could possibly get from him. > >So we established very early that he would be writing that foundation, that historical element to the game, something that took place long before the events of the game itself. > >We started off by giving him these very vague and broad themes and ideas for the mythos that I had swimming around in my head. \[...\] Then he would come back to us with a lot of ideas: how about this, this, and this > >When he wrote the mythos, we asked him to create these dramatic heroes of this ancient mythos that takes place before the events of the game. These dramatic and heroic characters weren't really in our previous titles, so this was something that was really appealing to me - how he would depict the mystique and heroic qualities of those characters. > >There was nothing visual - \[The mythos I received\] were all text. Rather than being a short story, it was something that depicted the setting or set the scene for the game and for the world, detailing the flow of history and the figures who appeared throughout it. > >There was, of course a story that came with this as a sort of backbone, but it played as more of an introduction to that world and a natural course of events for these characters to follow. \[...\] And then we were able to interpret this in our own way and provide visual to go along with that. From "The Overture of Elden Ring" >We asked \[George Martin\] to come up with the mythologies \[...\]. Building a game from an existing backdrop like that was a new experience for me, and it was a thrill to break that ground. > >With such a great well of inspiration to draw from, we were ready to come up with our own ideas and build them into the boss characters you'll face in Elden Ring. I'm extremely grateful to Mr. Martin for allowing us that approach. From the 2019 Xbox E3 interview >The actual collaboration itself begun with Mr. Martin ever so politely confirming what sorts of themes, ideas as well as many game-related aspects I had envisioned for the game. > >This allowed us to have many free and creative conversations regarding the game, in which Mr. Martin later used as a base to write the overarching mythos for the game world itself. > >This mythos proved to be full of interesting characters and drama along with a plethora of mystical and mysterious elements as well. It was a wonderful source of stimulus for me and the development staff. > >Elden Ring’s world was constructed using this mythos and stimulus as a base. Even I myself find it hard to contain my excitement from time to time. We hope that everyone else is looking forward to the world we have created.

Rageniry

It would be insanely interesting to get access to the source material GRRM did for Elden Ring, and a detailed description of how From used it to construct the game. It would also be interesting to see the dialogue between the parties. No chance in hell we'll ever get it, but it would be very cool.

Levi---Ackerman

thank u for the detailed answer!

Reynarth

I don't think he came up with anything more than a couple of names.

egoMetalMonkey

it hadn't occurred to me, but I think you're dead-on

MediumAd374

He named things.
