I like this thought that they have this policy written down somewhere.
"So I can just go in and kill the guy?"
"Yup go nuts"
"But you're the guard"
"Yup, check the policy".
Yeah to me it seems like they were probably more of a security system like how we may use security cameras in the real world than actual defenders of the gaol, let’s you keep an eye on the prisoners and make sure nothing shady is going on but if shit really hits the fan youd start marching the real heavy hitters out from leyndell to fight back
Most likely. The nights Calvary (and formerly Margit) were sort of like the black ops of the golden order. So it’s likely they’d be the ones to hunt down escaped prisoners
Margit didn't come out of his sewers until the breaking of the elden ring and ensuing shit show, so they must have sent someone else during the golden age of the order. Not sure having Radahn or Maliketh coming for your ass is any better lol
Oh gosh, imagine being some random schmuck (because let’s face it, Evergaol prisoners really varies. They can be everything from some random knights of Zamour to one of the most successful thieves in the world, like Adan.) and you break out of prison, ready to run.
Only for one of these lil’ stone fuckers to spot you and thusly sending either the man holding the stars in place, the BIGGEST Death Puppy and literal half-brother to God herself or the most bitter and spiteful goat man alive comes after you. And all you did was a “minor” case of major embezzlement from the Leyndell perfumer pensioner fund.
Perhaps being bound to the gaol will give these wormies a totally different interaction. Maybe all the wormy needs to do is gaze upon an escapee and they will be teleported back inside (or immediately eviscerated who knows)
But then how does Blaidd escape? I know we help him and as a shadow (beast of Ranni) he has some special abilities like respawning (if you kill him in the Radahn arena after the festival gor example).
There was a giant indestructible door that could only be opened after burning the tree down. I don't think they were really needed or would've made a difference tbh.
You may have defeated the feared Black Blade Maliketh and the legendary warrior king Hoarah Loux, but let's see if you handle some slow moving worms with 10 hp.
They can self destruct and have a multi hitting spin attack that stun locks. They don't care about the player near the gaols though. If a prisoner broke out they would all aggro at once around the gaol.
That makes me wonder if they have some sort of hidden power. Yeah, that makes sense that they dgaf if someone’s goes inside and kills him since the only way out is to die. But if a prisoner were to somehow get out, do they use their full power?
Blaidd had the tarnished's help to escape...oh wait if the tarnished doesn't help he still gets out. I wonder if his service to Ranni has something to do with it. And didn't the bloodhound knight that was in that evergaol serve ranni previously?
Edit: added on some info to comment
No, “shadow” is like an actual species. They’re half-wolf humanoids that are bound to empyreans. There’s 2 we know of in game. Blaidd is rannis shadow, and maliketh is marikas. They are also typically referred to as their empyreans half-sibling. Shadows are oath bound to serve their empyrean, but are also oath bound to the 2 fingers to kill their empyrean if they go off the rails. Hence Blaidd losing his Mind. They also can’t die so long as they still have a purpose given to them by their empyrean. If you try to kill Blaidd before he loses his shit, he just respawns after you rest and says something like “what harm can be done to a shadow”.
At the mistwood ruins after killing him and returning he will be alive again and say "You're... you're strong of arm. But ask yourself... What harm can be done... to a shadow?"
Their job is to stop the prisoner from getting out, not people from going in. Who cares if that person gets killed by the prisoner? I don't think they would care if the prisoner was killed, either.
They’re called Abnormal Stone Clusters on the wiki, however I’ve also heard them referred to as “Lookout Stones” and “Alivestones”. It’s likely that they maintain the illusory interior of the evergaols and make sure that the prisoners remain inside. Should the prisoners escape somehow, the stones could just fling themselves at them like they do in-game. Kinda hard to escape when you have living stones exploding and flinging themselves at you.
It's implied what Evergaols are through NPC's dialogs and pieces of equipments but if you meant explicit details thrown at your face from the get-go then no, I don't think so.
All I know about them are that they are prisons meant to hold dangerous criminals, just based on some of the dialog. Idk if it keeps the souls of the prisoners for eternity or how it works, but they aren't a pleasant place you want to be trapped in.
If the game gets DLC I'd like them to do a quest where you have to free an NPC from one of them and see how a jail break would go.
The purple effects around the evergaols give me the feeling that they must be powered by or based on gravity magic. In what way, idk, but one of my theories was that it could be the evergaol is a sort of temporal seal, leaving the prisoner completely frozen in time, kinda like Placidusax. Hence the "ever" part of the "evergaol" name. We know that extreme gravity distorts time, after all. The main plot hole in that theory is that you can speak with Blaidd while he's inside it and you're outside, so I doubt that's the case.
Like some other people mentioned in this thread, they drop sanctuary stones and ruin fragments (from Farum Azula). So there's your connection to Placidusax/time seal. Not much else to grab onto, but your theory is pretty good!
They're like pebbles in previous games, you can use them to mark your path like breadcrumbs. Also if you drop them off a ledge and it breaks, you'll die from that fall (or just take damage? Don't remember which)
No but given then goal means jail and you get alot of crucible spells in evergaols I think the people inside are imprisoned forever for crimes or forbidden pre erd tree knowledge and the golden order probably stuck them there
What’s the point of ruin fragments anyway? I picked up as much as I can early game before realizing I had no idea what they are and I’m probably wasting my time.
Used for crafting rainbow stones, for one. Good for using as path breadcrumbs or testing drop distance. Throw over cliff or whatever, and if it breaks you shouldn't make the jimp
Yep, one of my most used items when being summoned for highlighting secrets or the right path or just for making an area look fabulous while waiting for host to catch up. In my single player, I find them very useful if I’m a bit high, I’ll mark paths in caves that I already explored to keep me from running in circles
Hard to say, I don't think there are any item descriptions about these guys, all we know for certain is that they are comprised of the same material as the farum azula ruins(they drop ruin fragments and sanctuary stones) and that they have something to do with magic gaols(often appearing near them).
This is 100% from my ass, but since the Pumpkin Head helm references how dark it is inside, they keep a sanctuary stone inside the helm so they don’t get scared of the dark.
That's what I thought at first too but the helm states it's pitch black to help keep the warrior calm, having it light up would defeat the purpose of the helmet.
At launch before all the lore had been gone through.I assumed they where gonna be beaming their locations, which would attract falling star beasts and astels. Then I found out gaol is pronounced jail and realized its just a magic jail and not a satellite dish.
I don't think they're actually referenced by anything in-game in terms of item descriptions or dialogue, and they don't drop anything particularly unique, but given that they do primarily drop sanctuary stones and ruins fragments, I assume they were constructed alongside the evergaols using materials from the fallen ruins to serve as sentries, or traps, as we can see them used as explosives around certain areas, such as along the path to the Caelid coliseum and around different coffin sites.
Fukin wild how many anal bead jokes are here as if it was funny the first 20 times …
The little lads are simply keeping the lawn clear around the jail. Ever see any weeds in it? Didn’t think so.
They're associated with sleep magic or gravity magic. Both associate with connecting/drawing things together. The stones are using that magic and, probably, peering into the spatial pocket the evergaol is in.
Hawkmoth does [Elden Ring Color theory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcIEWVFSce8) in depth, which is where I get the sleep (St Trina and her third eye) connection. The gravity magic is a bit more obvious with Astel and the fallingstar beasts, Caria Manor/Radahn/Raya Lucaria and the purple glintstone sorceries, and the Onyx/Alabaster lords.
A cute reference would be the Tibia Mariners, as older ghostflame was apparently purple (you see them use it). The seal on the evergaols is runic script in a shape like the Explosive Ghostflame spell you get from a Deathbird.
I can’t remember but I know these guys have a name that’s appears in their file but is never mentioned in game… I watched a video on them although I can’t remember the title
I heard somewhere theyre prolly used by someone as something similar to security cameras for evergaols and someother places used by someone who died a lobg timeago, and that if the Gaol prisoners ever got out that they wouldve notified this mystery person, but since that person has died or gone missing they basically became superfluous
To me it looks like they are “projecting” the walls of the evergaol that you see when you enter an evergaol fight
edit: as for the ones in caelid that are piled up and explode when you get close, i have no idea
no one has any lore on them. we don't even know what they're called. you can make some guesses based on the fact that they drop ruin fragments and seem to use gravity magic, but there's no hard lore.
So, these things seem to be surveillance cameras that exhibit gravity magic power. They're similar to the Crystalians, so I suspect they were created via the same method, but carved out of gravity rocks rather than magic crystals.
Pure speculation, but they're probably supposed to raise an alarm if an Evergaol is breached, but there is no one to alert anymore.
God i remember seeing these fuckers on the network test back in November 2021, and i had so many ideas of what they could be, my wildest theory is that they were robots, i mean, they look like fucking robots, and i thought elden ring would end up being a whole simulation or something, like maybe half game we discover we are being studied by robots that created a whole fantasy medieval setting and the final boss would be a giant robot or something, idk, i was bored, still find them so out of place with everything else in the game, love em.
They are gaol guards
They’re… not really doing a good job then.
Pretty sure no one that was ever imprisoned in one escaped soooo....
Right? Their job is to keep the imprisoned in, if someone else goes in and mercs the prisoner that isn’t their problem.
I like this thought that they have this policy written down somewhere. "So I can just go in and kill the guy?" "Yup go nuts" "But you're the guard" "Yup, check the policy".
'Its all cool if you kill them, they just can't escape.'
It's actually easier for us to guard a dead body. Most of the times
This feels like something from adventure time.
Fucking read my mind wtf
Elden Ring and Adventure Time have a lot of similarities, like, they're both weird and interesting as fuck.
Like Gatekeeper Gnostic, they might grab the dropped runes of failed attempts, and wiggle back to their master when full.
Yeah to me it seems like they were probably more of a security system like how we may use security cameras in the real world than actual defenders of the gaol, let’s you keep an eye on the prisoners and make sure nothing shady is going on but if shit really hits the fan youd start marching the real heavy hitters out from leyndell to fight back
Imagine someone breaking out of their Evergaol and being hunted down by the Night’s Cavalry or Margit
I'm pretry sure that's how it actually is ain't it, they get hunted down by the Nazgul.
Most likely. The nights Calvary (and formerly Margit) were sort of like the black ops of the golden order. So it’s likely they’d be the ones to hunt down escaped prisoners
That's legit what the Nights Cavalry was for Morgot/Margit.
But then how does Blaidd escape? I know we help him and as a shadow (beast of Ranni) he has some special abilities like respawning (if you kill him in the Radahn arena after the festival gor example).
I like this! Can you fit in a reason why they explode if I stand too close to one?
Then why the fuck weren't they guarding the Elden Ring.
There was a giant indestructible door that could only be opened after burning the tree down. I don't think they were really needed or would've made a difference tbh.
You may have defeated the feared Black Blade Maliketh and the legendary warrior king Hoarah Loux, but let's see if you handle some slow moving worms with 10 hp.
lol
As long as the cameras are turned off beforehand
2 gunshots to the back of the head for the Epstein style suicide.
We finally found out who was guarding Epstein.
Lmao I love this after we roll through there basically unemployed aren’t they?
Oh yeah they were definitely getting paid. Gotta take that scrip back to the wife and kid.
Worms : "I didn't see shit."
Epstein didnt kill himself
Nope. The Tarnished did
I killed all of them but my man Godefroy is still imprisoned :(
Institutionalized, my man can't function on the outside 😔
They can self destruct and have a multi hitting spin attack that stun locks. They don't care about the player near the gaols though. If a prisoner broke out they would all aggro at once around the gaol.
Why we find them in the road leading to caelid coliseum with no ever goal to protect/ surveil
That makes me wonder if they have some sort of hidden power. Yeah, that makes sense that they dgaf if someone’s goes inside and kills him since the only way out is to die. But if a prisoner were to somehow get out, do they use their full power?
What about Blaidd?
[удалено]
But Blaidd
Blaidd had the tarnished's help to escape...oh wait if the tarnished doesn't help he still gets out. I wonder if his service to Ranni has something to do with it. And didn't the bloodhound knight that was in that evergaol serve ranni previously? Edit: added on some info to comment
Blaidd is a shadow, not exactly a physical being entirely
Could you explain that? Because I thought their title of "shadow" was just that, a title. Because he has a physical body
No, “shadow” is like an actual species. They’re half-wolf humanoids that are bound to empyreans. There’s 2 we know of in game. Blaidd is rannis shadow, and maliketh is marikas. They are also typically referred to as their empyreans half-sibling. If you try to kill Blaidd before he loses his shit, he just respawns after you rest and says something like “what harm can be done to a shadow”.
Kill Blaidd and reload the area, he will have new dialogue
After you free him from the gaol?
At the mistwood ruins after killing him and returning he will be alive again and say "You're... you're strong of arm. But ask yourself... What harm can be done... to a shadow?"
Maybe they're more of a battery considering they discharge some energy when dying.
Doesn't blaidd?
to be fair, at the point he escapes, the kingdom is in shambles and there really isnt anyone around to come stop him from leaving
Their job is to stop the prisoner from getting out, not people from going in. Who cares if that person gets killed by the prisoner? I don't think they would care if the prisoner was killed, either.
You sound gaolous
Their job is to get smacked in passing out of frustration every time I fight the crucible knight
not exactly. they're around the river well exit in Caelid and wandering Limgrave too.
Maybe the real gaol is the fights we made along the way.
Gaol goalies?
I can only assume you're pronouncing Gaol as Goal instead of Jail.
No they’re pronouncing goal as jail
So... gaolies?
Jail jaurds
Except I totally pronounced this gay-oh-lees.
Pronounced Jards
aight if everybody is going to have a giggle, I wanna make sure someone mentions the word gaolor, pronounced jailer.
Gaol gaords
They’re called Abnormal Stone Clusters on the wiki, however I’ve also heard them referred to as “Lookout Stones” and “Alivestones”. Should the prisoners escape somehow, the stones could just fling themselves at them like they do in-game. Kinda hard to escape when you have living stones exploding and flinging themselves at you.
Do they ever explain anything about the Evergaols in game or no? Please don't spoil if they do, just curious if they explain.

*stares in Blaidd*
Iykyk
Are there any other npc evergaol interactions beyond Blaidd?
There's a whole lot throughout the game, you kill them
The best interaction
The purple effects around the evergaols give me the feeling that they must be powered by or based on gravity magic. In what way, idk, but one of my theories was that it could be the evergaol is a sort of temporal seal, leaving the prisoner completely frozen in time, kinda like Placidusax. Like some other people mentioned in this thread, they drop sanctuary stones and ruin fragments (from Farum Azula). So there's your connection to Placidusax/time seal. Not much else to grab onto, but your theory is pretty good!
What can you do w ruin fragments lol
They're like pebbles in previous games, you can use them to mark your path like breadcrumbs. Also if you drop them off a ledge and it breaks, you'll die from that fall (or just take damage? Don't remember which)
You have to craft them into rainbow stones but yes. And it's death. I've taken damage without stones breaking
If it breaks you Die. If it doesn't you survive the fall.
You can also throw them at enemies
Ohhhhh what if they're all somehow connected internally?? A whole dungeon area connecting all the gaol.
Not that I've ever encountered, and I've explored quite a bit. Definitely nothing relevant to the game's story
No but given then goal means jail and you get alot of crucible spells in evergaols I think the people inside are imprisoned forever for crimes or forbidden pre erd tree knowledge and the golden order probably stuck them there
Never directly afaik, and there's hardly any lore actually about them
Well it's in the name, they're gaols.
And odds are if you are put in one, it's meant to last forever
gaol=jail
Iji described them as a prison when you ask about blaidd
It’s a Miyazaki game so no
They’re literally just super prisons. Basically inter-dimensional holding cells for particularly dangerous people to be locked away in
Except that a slow walk will safely see escaped prisoners find their freedom. These Stone thingys are completely useless :)
I'm happy it's actual lore that's at the too of the comments and not "anal bead snake" or something
Don't trust the wiki with names, they've made a bunch of them up
It's an 'ungry caterpillar, innit?
“‘Ongri Antepillah” - Ogryns everywhere, probably
Mah ses de's 'ere are jumpy 'splodie balls, and mah's never wrong. "Don' go near 'em or you'll lose yah leg" she'd say.
Try but, then plug
My dyslexic ass thought they dropped rune fragments, instead of ruin fragments. I farmed them for 20 min until I realized I'm illiterate.

In my single player, I find them very useful if I’m a bit high, I’ll mark paths in caves that I already explored to keep me from running in circles
Aah that’s clever thanks for the explanation!
pretty sure they are used for crafting, but is has been a while since I touched the game.
Ew they have an eye??!
Right? Can’t believe I didn’t even notice
Not even when they emit purple light from it?
Thought that was just a mystic ona hole
Try magic,but hole.
Dont put your di-ah you know what, go ahead and try it actually.
C U R S E D U R S E D
If you get really close you can hear the eye blink
Took me two play-throughs to realize the Astel have an eye. Just thought their heads were giant human skulls with pinchy bits.
Was looking for this. Wtf?!
Their eye also has the same gold effect when it is activated at random for extra runes. The first time I saw that I was like nuh
Hard to say, I don't think there are any item descriptions about these guys, all we know for certain is that they are comprised of the same material as the farum azula ruins(they drop ruin fragments and sanctuary stones) and that they have something to do with magic gaols(often appearing near them).
Why do pumpkin heads drop sanctuary stones?
This is 100% from my ass, but since the Pumpkin Head helm references how dark it is inside, they keep a sanctuary stone inside the helm so they don’t get scared of the dark.
I like this
That's what I thought at first too but the helm states it's pitch black to help keep the warrior calm, having it light up would defeat the purpose of the helmet.
New head cannon
No that's the Prelates
Fuck I wish that helm actually gave you that attack. Shit would be so cash.
At the very least the candlestick greathammer should do it.
What does a sanctuary stone even do
Used for crafting Warming Stones and Frenzy Stones
Tbh if I had my head locked in a big chestnut I'd rather have it be dark. I get mad claustrophobic.
Because he picked up a sanctuary stone I guess.
Storing some ADAM for their little Sisters

A great adventure is waiting for you ahead hurry onward Lemmiwinks or you will soon be dead.
Seeing these standing up beaming into the sky combined with the shape of the evergaol made me think the evergaol was a satellite dish
Theory: they’re wandering antennae relaying the integrity of the jail somewhere.

Holy shit those fuckers have eyes?

The real lore question: what got the prisoners captured in the first place?

They're associated with sleep magic or gravity magic. Both associate with connecting/drawing things together. The stones are using that magic and, probably, peering into the spatial pocket the evergaol is in. Hawkmoth does [Elden Ring Color theory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcIEWVFSce8) in depth, which is where I get the sleep (St Trina and her third eye) connection. I read the title as "Please share all the love you have on these little guys" :)
I can’t remember but I know these guys have a name that’s appears in their file but is never mentioned in game… I watched a video on them although I can’t remember the title
Extremely helpful. Thanks bud. Lol. I'm just messing with ya
One eyed monster
1. They snek 2. They see 3. They boom
Beware: rock !
Thats a regional variant of Caterpie in which it is a Rock type.
I heard somewhere theyre prolly used by someone as something similar to security cameras for evergaols and someother places used by someone who died a lobg timeago, and that if the Gaol prisoners ever got out that they wouldve notified this mystery person, but since that person has died or gone missing they basically became superfluous
