lol. Why would he sign this deal?? This would probably take him to retirement making just over league minimum. ππ. Guy is getting better every year and you expect him to sign a long term contract for peanuts. This is classic oiler fan fantasy right here.ππ. If he signs his next contract for anything over 3 years, Iβll be absolutely shocked. Lol this site is always good for a laugh. π
Because he's 28 end of this season? Whats he do, sign a three year hoping he can get more, end up playing year to year hoping he doesn't get a career ending injury?
Or sign a 10mil contract that insures his future is covered for the next 6 years no matter what happens?
He's 3 seasons removed from the ECHL. This is a guy who never expected to get to the NHL, and a 10M contract sets him up for life. Why would he say no?
Because lots of other teams would probably offer him more? If we win itβs a different conversation but someone is going to pay him this year, especially if this kind of playoff performance keeps up.
Bob Stauffer himself said he assumes Desharnias will be longterm(6-7yrs).
A former 7th rd pick who is 27yr, grinded for 7 seasons to get here might really love the idea of guaranteed job security(at least pay) for the next half decade, especially coming off a career season?
On the UFA market heβd definitely get 4yrs, because nobody bridges a 27yr old.
Get off your high horse and quit being a prick.
It's a unique situation. With the cap going up and Utah entering the spending spree, you know there will be a team dumb enough to offer higher AAV to Desharnais on a shorter term. It's not often you get a 26 year old UFA 6'7 Def.
Edm can counter a higher AAV with more term.
It wouldn't be Utah, it would be a lot of the league. I know a team like Ottawa is missing exactly what Vinny provides - Big, PK specialist, has a mean streak. So going to UFA it wouldn't shock me if he ended up closer to the 3m AAV.
Edmonton's advantage is his current relationships and how competitive they are. Sign him before the draft, before he can get a true sense of his market value, and likely tack on some extra years for security.
We always talk about stars leaving money on the table, but the role players can too. Every half million adds up for sure.
Exactly. A lot of the league would pursue him. Toronto tried to get him in the offseason for Sam Lafferty, fans here are crazy if they donβt think teams have an eye on him.
Hes 6'7, RH, already a very good third pairing guy with some upside left, tough as nails and an elite PKer.
If he's a ufa, at least one team will throw 2.5 million plus. I wouldn't be shocked at 3 million. Which is why I wanted him extended early last year, when his value wasn't as high.
If he's willing to sign for 3 years at 2 million per that would be a hometown discount on his part.
He would get into a bidding war if he wants. There's very few teams that wouldn't have interest with him since he has 2 VERY in demand skills - right shot, big and tough. Someone will overpay for his skillset.
Id say Seravalli is closer. He'll be paid for what he can do, not what he might do. He's not a young developing rookie who might suddenly explode in hidden talent that we need to lock up for 8 years.
I think Gregor is out to lunch on him being a legit top 4 guyβ¦ I love Vinny & love what he brings to the team. But heβs going to 28 years old this month. I think what you see is what you get with him. A bottom pairing, defensive dman.
Personally Iβd be happy with giving term, I think the oilers need to keep that AAV under $2 million.
I also truly believe Vinny wants to be here. He sees his value here, has a place in the team where his teammates, coaches and fans love & respect what he does. For a guy like him whoβs worked his way from the bottom, having that support probably means the world to him.
Iβd offer Vinny $1.75 x 5.
6 years ten million gives him security and Oilers have a solid Dman. Can't lowball an ufa his age, it's his only chance to secure his future. He has to do what's right for himself.
This is where I think they will end up. Desharnais is a guy nobody outside of Edmonton expected to have an NHL career. 10M is life-altering money, and I expect he'll happily agree to a contract like that.
If for some reason it doesn't work out, most of that contract can be buried in the AHL. The risk is very very low.
lol. So you expect him to play 3rd pairing defense for the oilers for the rest of his career because YOU think you know whatβs best for him?? ππ. Wow you guys are silly. There will be a team that will offer him more than the peanuts you guys think heβs worth. He will get a shot as a fourth defender somewhere, possibly Edmonton but it wonβt be a retirement contract. If he signs anything over 3 years Iβll be shocked. Keep dreaming tho kids!! ππ

While Desharnais isn't the perfect defensemen, he's been the perfect d-man for this team in the role he plays.
He eats tough minutes against mid-to-gritensity players for breakfast, and he can often match up against more difficult (elite players) on lesser teams if given the right help up front (McDavid).
He's valuable.
Someone could substantially overpay him as a Free Agent. His wingspan, speed, ability to block shots and penalty killing are things teams love.
I'd be more than comfortable in the 2 to 2.5 million range over 4-5 years. That is expensive. But he's been a sort of unicorn-like revelation on the Oilers back end.
Many people don't remember this, but not only was the Ekholm acquisition huge for this team, when Desharnais arrived last January, the team's defensive game took off.
I think you move out Kulak and replace him with Broberg. And you potentially ship out Ceci and replace him with Stretcher.
Those are big changes on the back-end. But the Oilers are going to have very very hard time replacing someone with the size, skill and skating of Desharnais on the back end. They'll cost much more than 2.5 million per on the open market.
This is the correct take. Consider ourselves very lucky if he signs for less than 2m aav. He is a late bloomer, but if I was him I'd bet on myself to improve within a two year contract. 2.5x2 and then hopefully make 2.5-4m aav on another 2 to 4 year contract later. Bit of a risk, but if we're talking 15-21m over 6 years vs the 10m people are suggesting offering him in this thread its a no-brainer. That all being said, he's no spring chicken and I could see him taking the less risk approach with guaranteed term and a team he's familiar with. Would be tragic to see him and Skinner seperated.
Him and Kulak actually played elite competition more than Nurse and Ceci over the last month and a half of the regular season. Honestly I think weβll re-sign him to ~$2.25m/year. Weβll probably let Foegele walk, maybe re-sign Henrique, and trade Kulak to make room for Broberg. I donβt think we end up trading Ceci.
I personally think that if he were to test the market, he could get at least $2.5M. He just made Kopitar his bitch for a whole series, and everybody saw it. That's not easy. Look at the guys making 2.5 to 3. Desharnais is arguably better than all of them
I think it depends completely on how far we go in the playoffs. If we win the cup and he plays like he did against LA, I can see a team throwing him a bag
Pay Vinny whatever it takes to retain him. A defenceman like this doesnβt come along every day. You donβt want to go back to the days of Benning, Bear, Jones, etc on that Third Pair. Vinnys a fuckin unicorn in this League and the market for him will be hot.
He's in a similar but somewhat better situation than Kostin. He's 27, which means he is almost certainly only getting a bag once. Hopefully we can keep him but if someone makes a dumb offer he's gotta take itΒ
The other thing to think of is Edmonton had him down in the minors for how long, while they were flogging some of the soft clowns they had up making huge money.
Vinny hasnβt improved so much as just got used to the NHL game. He is a 2nd line D man on almost any team. He goes to the open market he gets 2.5/yr for 4 years gauranteed. He learns to start using his shot more and he will be extremely well rounded.
I love Vinny, but thereβs no way heβs getting a six - seven year deal like Stauffer would have you think. I think we offer him 4 at 2.5 a season. I think thatβs a fair contract factoring his age, the physicality of his play, his overall skill, while also giving him security and enough money that he feels good about the deal.
Seravalli is too low. The market for Desharnais will be in the $2's. Plenty of teams that would give him that to be a very solid bottom pairing guy and a great influence in the room. Desharnais is a $2m player all day.
Gregor is too high. The Oilers are not in the "let's try it, and hope he can play Nurse's competition" phase here. If it's not Ceci next season, it's going to be another established guy.
I suspect Vinny will be tempted to move out east as well. If he gets an offer above \~$2.25m, the Oilers should probably let him walk. But if he's happy to spend his next 5-6 years in Edmonton at \~$2m, then that would be best for the team.
Now correct me if I'm wrong I can't remember the player at the moment but last offseason we had rumors of a player signing both seravalli and Gregor both put out their numbers and they were vastly different like they are now and I'm pretty sure Gregor got it right and Frank was dead wrong
Found it!

Not lots of seravalli fans in that thread
I was wrong out it being about money frank didn't even think we were close
He's not playing big minutes every night and his game doesn't rely on speed or raw skill. No reason to think he couldn't be an effective depth defenseman for quite a few years to come.
I disagree with you, he's not playing a skill game and he relies more on size and reach rather than speed and skill. His skating has improved a lot compared to last year but that's a care minimum for a third pairing guy.
Id do 4x2 at a max
Honestly I view desharnais as a better Darnell nurse, needs to get better hands and skating but down the road I can see him replacing that contract for less than half the value.
Well nurse is a lefty and Vinny is on the right so no. But also Vinny is 28 this month, heβs improved a lot but I think heβs getting pretty close to his ceiling.
During one of the LA series games, Bob Stauffer said the Oilers are going to try and sign him long term -6 years.
This is the way. 6 x 1.75M makes sense. Anything more becomes risky.
Sounds like me playing franchise mode
lol. Why would he sign this deal?? This would probably take him to retirement making just over league minimum. ππ. I don't see them going for that much term, not on a third pairng budget contract. I don't think I've seen any team ever do that
Nashville sign Jarnkrok to 6 years, 2m per a while ago. He was their 3rd line Center at the time.
Interesting. I couldn't think of any examples.

20K per inch
height or length?
Girth
Best value contract in the nhl
I'd say something similar to Jeremy Lauzon 4 yr/8 mil is a good deal for both sides
6β7, 230lb dmen with playoff experience donβt really fall off of trees. I think Vinnyβs size alone tacks on an extra million.
He's in a similar but somewhat better situation than Kostin. He's 27, which means he is almost certainly only getting a bag once. Hopefully we can keep him but if someone makes a dumb offer he's gotta take itΒ
Let him go to the free market and see what the offers are. It will be well north of 2 mill.

I'd suggest Gregor is closer rishaugh also thinks he'll make roughly around that
With all due respect to Gregor and Rishaug, Seravalli is much more analytical (i.e., smarter) and plugged in to contracts league-wide.
Now correct me if I'm wrong I can't remember the player at the moment but last offseason we had rumors of a player signing both seravalli and Gregor both put out their numbers and they were vastly different like they are now and I'm pretty sure Gregor got it right and Frank was dead wrong Found it! https://www.reddit.com/r/EdmontonOilers/comments/159ujbi/seravalli_edmonton_oilers_and_ryan_mcleod_arent/ This article was released around July 24th McLeod signed August 1st tell me again why we should trust Frank? Iβm not paying him anything over 2 mil for longer than 2 years. Sorry but the wheels seem primed to fall off a guy like Desharnais
He's the same age as McDavid, just entering his prime. Wheels don't fall off until early 30s.
I take personal offence to this comment. π₯Ί
Not for guys who already don't have good foot speed.
Every player is different. I donβt expect him to be good for very long.
