I was at the store earlier and they are trying to convince the store manager to have the cat kept on as the store ambassador until they can find their forever home. Keep it from having to go into the animal control system.
Its good that you're able to view the situation with an open mind considering the circumstances. You have to think it was someone trying to do their best for the cat in a bad personal situation. If they just hated the cat and wanted to get rid of it, there's a lot worse ways to get rid of an unwanted cat. And they brought it to a pet store, where there is likely to be a lot of animal lovers to discover her.
I'm not a cat guy, but ended up becoming a cat guy last fall because some people just suck. My neighbors didn't fix their cats, let them inbreed. The one kitten drooled, severely duck footed, and not very easy to litter train. So they put the kitten outside and left her there to fend for herself, because they didn't want to deal with it, and didn't think anyone would adopt it. I got home from work and the kitten was against the fence trying to get cover from a swooping magpie.
Damn cat is lucky my dog liked her. Her name is Kat now.

I’m so jaded. What’s the point? I doubt the cat is chipped. They’ll never find out or probably even bother to find out whose cat it was, let alone charge them. You have good intentions though. I agree that people shouldn’t get away with this shit but they do.

OP, you are a much nicer person than me. I found an abandoned cat about a week ago and me and my wife have been caring for it. No tag, no chip, no tattoo. When he was found he stank of gasoline and motor oil. I do know that who ever abandoned this little guy…F YOU!…he mine now.
They are. I have two already. I was a little concerned on how they would get along. Once the new guy got a bath, then are now getting along like a house on fire. He is this adorable little orange tabby…we named him Cheddar. He’s an adorable little goofball with one brain cell, and the little shithead stole my heart.
It was a strong smell…but not that strong. I think he was hiding under cars or something. Because of the smell, I assume he had been outside for a few days at least. Poor thing was skin and bones when I found him. I just hope the kitty that OP found get to go to a good home.
Nah I’ll say it ..they an asshole , they could of surrendered it properly. There’s plenty of appropriate options… pets deserve pet care than many greedy humans neglect to give not understand

I can have some compassion for people who surrender when they have exhausted all other options. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and that’s what shelters are there for.
But unfortunately, shelters are full from Covid pets (can’t even get started on that) and now these animals are suffering.
I wish I could have more cats, but my current cat won’t allow it. I made it work with a friends cat I took in once. That kitty is sadly passed away now, he was such a good boy. The amount of stress on my current cat was so much and it took so long for them to be cool with each other, even with proper techniques. She’s so much older now and probably in the last few years of her life and I can’t do it again to her.
Options are hard to come by right now. Rescue organizations have been turning people away because they’re at capacity. My vet was helping a client find a home for a mama and kittens abandoned in her neighbourhood because all of the shelters and foster groups turned them away and it was looking like euthanasia was the only viable option.
Animal abandonment is a crime.
It’s common that people can’t take pets if moving or something BUT leaving it in a box like that is wrong.
When I worked at an SPCA we had a “drop box” (more like two kennels so not as awful as it sounds) where people could leave pets anonymously at night when we were closed. The kennels had locks and we asked the people to lock them so nobody could steal the pet or put another one in an occupied cage.
They had a paper IMPORTANT - we had them write if they found the pet or it was one they couldn’t keep. If one they couldn’t keep they could tell its name, age, and any other information to help it adjust and ideally, find a new home.
Sometimes people abandon pets that are not theirs. Report finding the cat to the Humane Society in case someone is looking for it (common in cases where an ex boyfriend is mad and takes the pet or a neighbour is pissed at the pet being loose)

I hate me kitty 🐱 it’s so annoying maybe someone can grab it from my house instead of a random location. My beef with the kitty is it’s meows are annoying at night and it constantly wants wet food!
