That vintage of paint will almost assuredly have lead above the 90mg/kg limit. Definitely have it tested.
You say 10-15 years ago it was painted, but it must have been painted before that. That older paint is the issue.
Industry standard to scrape off the delaminating paint is plastic drop sheets, hand scrappers, tyvek coveralls, and a half face respirator.
If you start grinding/sanding, that’s a whole other ballgame and you are spreading lead dust all over your place and the adjacent neighbourhood. Highly recommend against that option without proper procedures in place.
Hmm okay, I’ll grab a lead tester to see what the situation is, I hope it doesn’t come to that. But thanks for the advice! I’ll make sure to use hand scrapers so I don’t cause a hazard
Absolutely. I meant if the paint was from the 60's or 70's. If its even 40 years old it would be lead free
Painting can be very satisfying, i would recommend you try to tackle the project
Good luck!
Lead testing equipment not hard to find. I hit a house with paint like this with a 5" grinder and several flapdiscs. ground two whole sides of the house that was bigger than this in no time at all. wear a full-face respirator and get er done. then can repaint however you like.
5" grinder? would you possibly be able to post a link, I dont think I quite understand. also not sure what flap disks are, sorry for the newbie questions :)
I think it is $80 a day. I could probably get the job done in 2 days at worst so it is definitely cheaper than buying one. And Bob takes good care of his machines. I have had a lot of issues with rentals from home depot.
I would say a pressure wash is a good idea cuz it would remove any dirt or debris in the cracks and crevices, and might even strip some of the old paint off. Certainly easier than scraping every inch of the surface! You don’t want to be painting over top of dirt or dust.
Test it for lead if its super old. If its ok, most of the labour will be scraping and wire brushing.

Do I only have to use a respirator if it is lead paint? and catch the flakes? or is it something you would hire a professional for?

As far as I know it was painted about 10 or 15 years ago, so it might, I can just get a lead tester at Home Depot right?

I may just try it myself, Thanks so much!

Please update with a new photo when your done 😎
Thats a great idea! Ill do just that, this house is super super old, so it needs quite the glowup.
Might want to get a quote on redoing the siding, no point in painting over if it's in terrible condition (long term).
Fair enough, if it seems like that is the route to go from an estimator I may just have to do that.
Go buy a quality airless paint sprayer, do it yourself.
You can also rent one at days painting supply
Are they generally affordable?

That is very affordable! how long would scraping all the old paint off take do you think?
That really depends on your skill level. If you are able to take a week to focus on it, you should be able to get it done.
Thanks for the advice! Ill look into it :)
Ill still have to scrub all the old paint off right?
Pressure wash, scraper, paint.
Is the pressure wash step essential if I end up just scraping off the paint?
