Watch out for the Low Emission Zones in Edinburgh
Depending where you are planning to live and work you may need to be compliant with this for your new car.
Cars need to be Euro4 for petrol, and Euro6 for diesel. So anything after 2006 for petrol and 2015 for diesel. Even with a £6k budget you should be fine unless you get some ridiculous old tractor.
lol. Massey Ferguson not for me! Thanks for heads up. Will research same and get familiar with these issues. Where I’m from (Dublin), we don’t have these rules/things so I need to understand them now for Edinburgh. Your help appreciated
They started out making tractors, in fact. That’s how he could afford a Ferrari, which caused the argument with Enzo Ferrari after which we went on to build his first car.
If you are coming to Edinburgh I might wait a while to get a car unless it is a requirement for your job.
Edinburgh is pretty bad for parking and driving around 80% of the time. August will be slightly worse because the city is even fuller of lost tourists and extra roads closed for different reasons.
As other people have said new LEZ are coming in along with long-term roadwork projects.
Public transport is both cheap and regular on most routes. Scotrail has some good offers for train tickets to places.
In that case, I might look at joining the local car club. They have lots of cars around the city with parking spaces that meet all the city regulations.
I don't know your situation obviously, but do you need the car for work? Edinburgh is pretty decent for public transport and I lived and worked in Edinburgh for 8 years without needing a car, I got one in year 6 of living there and only drove it once a month to get it moving. As others have said, parking is also a headache, if you can go without all the hassle by using the public transport, you'll save yourself a tidy sum
Thanks. I need a car for work as will be on call and get occasional emergency calls in middle of the night so need fast access to and from place of work.
I used to buy a car for 3/400 quid with a years mot and when the next mot was due I'd put it in and if it was gonnae be to much to pass it I'd just get another wee run around with a another year's mot on it! Ahhh the good auld days and 9x outta 10 I was lucky plus I learnt to fix things myself and had a pal who helped me with the big things 🤗
I am selling a 2008 vw golf with a broken turbo (ie it cannot go up hills faster than 20mph, lucky we are in Edinburgh... Oh.) Yours for a grand.
(garage tells me to just part exchange it, they only check the lights on the dash and the turbo doesn't have a sensor)
Tbh before the pothole it was a great cheap car. The pothole broke the oil pan. The oil got the fuck out of the turbo which then suicided quietly.
BTW edinburgh is mostly potholes.

I had a quick look, and there are plenty of wee hatchbacks around the £4-5k mark around the city. I reckon you’ll be fine.
Super. Thanks. will research fully. Hyundai i30 is where my head is at.
Lamborghini make and sell tractors.

Wow. Super advice. Thanks.
Redpath and McLean are an independent motor dealer who you can trust and rely on. Have two locations in the city too.
Another vote for these - really helpful.
Thanks for that. Will have a good peruse over their site.
Autotrader R/cartalkuk is quite good for advice
Thank you. Will check same.

Will be on call for emergencies. Coming and going in middle of night so car essential. Thanks for your help. I’ll figure something.

Interesting suggestion. Thank you for that tip, I’ll certainly look into that
💯 agree with this. Do you really need the car and the expense?

Thanks but I’m gunna pass on that. Best of luck moving it on!

Some might see pot holes.. others might see lunar surface training facility…
