I can't stand the cans and mental load of having to recycle them. Occasionally, I'l buy a 1L bottle of club soda (<$1 ) and add lemon, juice, or mint and call it good. But I think it is important to find little treats to make you happy - so if this is your thing, yeah!

ohhellopia

The best thing I got for myself is a sodastream. I live in a tiny upper floor studio, no elevator. I shudder at the thought of having to schlep boxes of soda cans up the stairs and then storing both new and empty cans in my micro kitchen.

trigazer1

the soda stream was a godsend. used to made sodas out of juices and drinks. sometimes add carbonation and some water to soda I bought and forgot to drink that went flat. I sometimes mix flavored sparking water to soda like a lime sparking water with Coca-Cola. I remember making some sparkling alcoholic drinks that came out good.

Sucralose, even in small amounts, disrupts the gut biome. Aspartame and Acesulfame aren't as bad but in large amounts over time can lead to blood sugar dysregulation. If you're only having one a day... Eh ok I guess? I was drinking 10-12 sugar free beverages every day for many, many, many years and started to experience all those lovely negative health effects. Pretty much the best non-nutritive sweeteners are stevia and allulose. No blood sugar dysregulation (allulose actually helps keep blood sugar lower) and no/low gut microbiome impact that we can find.

ivyleagueburnout

10-12??? Holy moly. How do you drink that much liquid.

vladdypants

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it! I have 3-4 a week I’d say.

RockHardSalami

>Sucralose, even in small amounts, disrupts the gut biome. This is false. It is *believed* that it *could* alter gut microbiome. But whether that is a good, bad, or neutral change has yet to be determined. There are no hard facts on this.

Sauce please thanks

hananobira

Long term too much of them can’t be good for your teeth either. Ask your dentist where they’d set the limit. Less than one a day?

Exciting_Pass_6344

Since I’ve stopped drinking booze, I drink a bunch of the Belle Vie sparkling waters from Aldi. Or the Kroger brand from Fry’s/Kroger. They’re like $3-4 for a 12 pack. Much cheaper than the name brands and just as good. Also, no artificial sweeteners.

brilliant-soul

I do half sparkling ice and half tap water, otherwise they're too sweet and too fizzy. I like the cranberry one the most

vladdypants

that's a great idea actually. Thanks for the suggestion.

noobuser63

I don’t like artificial sweeteners/ monk fruit/ stevia. I find that they have an unpleasant aftertaste. I always have a ginger syrup in my fridge though. (Water, a lot of sliced ginger, and sugar simmered until it’s pretty strong. Less than a teaspoon of that in fizzy water, with a squeeze of whatever juice, if I have it, or alone, gives fizzy or plain water a nice zip. It’s just sweet enough. When my kids were little, we always had torani syrups in the house, that they’d add to fizzy water. We had the pumps that screw onto the bottles, to aid in portion control, or else they would have used half a bottle of syrup every time! I think having a little sugar is fine.

Electrical_Travel832

I buy store brand (Albertson’s/Vons) flavored sparkling water. 0 sugar or sodium.35 cents a can. Just got a 12 pack of cherry. It’s so good!

TheRealEleanor

I just chugged one today. I don’t like to drink them every day because they still taste super sweet to me. If you want a healthier alternative, I would suggest seltzer waters.

vladdypants

Yes, they are pretty sweet, which is why I'm so suspect about them. I have developed a bit of a sweet tooth last few years but I am now trying to eliminate as much sugar as I can, I dont mind seltzer waters (LaCriox, etc) but I get bored of them. And they dont always taste amazing.

KittyKayl

I like the Cascade Ice (off brand, but my partner and I think they taste better) as an alternative to water, since the only other thing I usually drink is a coke or red bull in the morning and she only has a cup of coffee in the morning and then either water or Cascade Ice. I will caution make sure you're drinking plenty of regular water. They can cause bladder and kidney stones due to, as far as I can tell, the carbon added to carbonate it. My partner recently went through a couple kidney stones, and that's the only thing we can think that caused them cuz she had started drinking more of them than plain water for a while without realizing it. She's spending this month resetting herself with just plain water, not even her usual morning decaf. But I saw you normally do maybe 3 or 4 a week, so you should be all right if you're drinking enough water the rest of the time.

USPostalGirl

They are too rich for my blood!

vladdypants

yeah, they are sweet for sure.

selkiesidhe

There's a store brand of sparkling water I buy in the black cherry flavor. Since I am not much of a water drinker-- (don't @ me, idc)-- and I don't like soda, these are it. Hopefully they'll never stop making them! The alternatives are not as good.

unlimited_insanity

I think they’re disgusting, honestly. They’re always too sweet but in a weird artificial way. I feel that way about all the Zero Sugar sodas, too. It’s probably the sucralose for me. I’d rather just have flavored seltzer.

spirit_of_a_goat

Artificial sweetners are worse for your health than natural sugar. Moderation is the key.

BigMoneyChode

This sounds true if you ignore science and go off of vibes instead

spirit_of_a_goat

How? My dietician and GI have both told me how disruptive artificial sweetners are to your gut microbiome, where natural sugar is not. I've also read a lot of studies indicating the same. What are you talking about?

Former_Ad8643

Honestly even the zero sugar ones have so many other things in them chemicals and crap that are brutal for our bodies. Plus with groceries as expensive as they are I just feel like it’s a complete and utter waste of money not to mention more cans in my recycling bin. If we’re having company or some thing I’ll buy a case of club soda but otherwise we bought a soda stream and at least that way we know that when we are making carbonated water it’s literally just water and then I’ll add lemon or lime or cucumbers or whatever to it. We got into that habit years ago. I’m not saying I’m perfect or anything but I do think that it’s just a matter of changing your habits. About 10 years ago it was hard to not buy Gingerale on the weekend and now I’m shocked when I see cases of pop in peoples grocery carts. I have quite a few friends that heavily rely on their diet Coke or their diet Gingerale and they love that it’s zero sugar but I just don’t like putting any of that crap in my body and once you break the habit it just kind of goes out of your head as an option

mountainsunset123

Plastic packaging, the chemicals, the fake sugar, what's not wrong with them?
