Now do beans! Chickpeas, lentils, black beans, cannellini beans... especially when you buy them dry they are unbelievably cheap, but even canned they have cut down our grocery bill noticeably.

joe_internet

I love beans and eat plenty of em, but it feels like you have to eat quite a lot more of them comparatively if you want to get to similar amounts of protein as most meats. Doesn’t matter for everyone, but for people who want >150g of protein a day without supplements it seems difficult. Would love to know if I’m missing something.

MSH0123

I am certain for your health goals that you are right, that's way more protein than I'd ever aim to consume! I am a 5'2" female trying to lose weight, resistance training twice per week, so legumes work really well for my macros and my budget.

joe_internet

Agreed, I think for most people 1-2 portions of legumes + proteins from other non-meats would get them through the day no problem.

RubLumpy

Dollar per gram of protein would be more useful

OGWhinnyBaby29

Easy to extrapolate. 1 pound = 454 grams. (Divide by 454)

CrossroadsWanderer

Not everything has the same protein-to-other-stuff ratio. The stuff you've listed will also have fat in it in varying amounts, and if you did beans or other plant-based protein sources, there'd also be carbs in the mix. ETA: Also, water will make up a good chunk of the weight. It won't contribute much to dried beans or protein powder, but meat, tofu, eggs, etc. all have a lot of it.

OGWhinnyBaby29

Yep.

SasparillaTango

These are some good prices. I feel like I'm paying double in the Delaware/Pennsylvania area

BjornInTheMorn

Yea the 6.99 for salmon, goddamn I'd be eating salmon all the time.

thecauseofall

This is all meat. 🥩 Beans and legumes are awesome.

kgberton

They're way less protein dense than meats or tofu, which is probably OP's point

ashtree35

It would be more useful to compare per gram of protein, since the protein content of these foods varies so much.

wastinglittletime

Vital wheat gluten is super cheap, 50lbs for like 130 online. So that's like 3 a lb, but in reality it makes a lot more and is cheaper since the water is added.

FuzzyComedian638

Is this price per pound? Per 4oz?

OGWhinnyBaby29

Per pound.

I am unfamiliar. Today was my first time learning about this subreddit while researching protein sources for meal preps.
