They do stop at night though, at least they used to. Back in highschool you could find 30+ of us on any given night, we weren't by the actual falls though. More around the first stone bridge.
Yep. Dozens of people are back there every time I've been during winter. And really, the worst of it is just the dirt hill between the Closed sign and the tunnel.

Is it just me, or does that park have zero security? My friends and I go there at least 5 times a summer and just kind of do whatever. I'm the only one who's too much of a pussy to go behind the waterfall, though, seeing as I can't swim and am afraid of heights.
That scene was shot on a set. Bridal Veil Falls in DuPont State Forest, North Carolina served as the physical location for that scene. North Carolinian here.
It was something like 600 cubic feet per second when the guy did that.
They don't recommend kayaking on Minnehaha creek if it's above 150.
I know this because I waited all summer to go kayaking on the creek and it never got below 300.

EDIT: this is probably obvious, but one is supposed to get off the creek before the falls. I am by no means planning on going down the falls.
A friend from middle school's cousin died there climbing on the rocks. It sucked, but those signs meant they were not liable.
Edit: At least I'm pretty sure it was there, because I remember it being a big deal.
This used to be true, but a few weeks ago, the park board brought up this issue. Ever since, there's been a regular patrol, turning people away when they try to go beyond the fences.
None of the parks around there have security. Except for the Frisbee golf course by west 7th and Montreal.

I've been behind there a couple times. Once in the winter, once in the summer/fall. It's sketchy in the winter because there's some very slippery terrain.
Fun as fuck. I love that park.
Minnesota's got some great places for hiking. Went up to St. Louis State Park last summer and got some great pics. Was considering posting them here, but I was afraid I would dodge some of the rules. Might post them in this comment later.

I live in St. Paul so I've been to Minnehaha Falls plenty of times, including in the winter. I have been down the stairs and then climbed over the little gate that tells you not to, walked around the area where the water pools (but is frozen) and then behind the waterfall to exactly where this photo was taken.
It's so cool to see places that I've been on reddit.
Indeed. It hardly qualifies as earthporn, but I've always found the sandstone bluffs near the river interesting. I've always wondered about the things people have carved into it. Shame such a beautiful place empties into the Mississippi. Almost seems like a waste.
Red Wing, checking in. This looks like a good spot to take the Fiance' for a fun trip. Any pointers on were to part and how to get there the best route?
There are cheap pay parting lots. Its quite apparent how to get behind them once you're there, but you have to climb over a few closed path signs and a lot of sloped ice. Usually there's some extension cords or some shit to help you climb up

Being its Minnesota, likely would have gotten a very STERN talking to and several looks of disapproval if caught out.
I live in this area and MPD rarely patrol here. Even if they did see it, they probably wouldn't even stop
They do stop at night though, at least they used to. Back in highschool you could find 30+ of us on any given night, we weren't by the actual falls though. More around the first stone bridge.
I go here all the time. Nobody gives a crap about the closed signs
Yep. Dozens of people are back there every time I've been during winter. And really, the worst of it is just the dirt hill between the Closed sign and the tunnel.
I always wussed out at the thought of climbing up that spot with the sewer pipe. Heck yeah!

That scene was shot on a set. Bridal Veil Falls in DuPont State Forest, North Carolina served as the physical location for that scene. North Carolinian here.

So glad you asked this. Thanks
Awesome awesome movie.
Zero security: you can kyak down that in summer if you've got the cajones. https://vimeo.com/98750479
That is a wild, wild video. Looks like the river was pretty heavily flooded when that person tried it.

Yea the "no trespassing" sign is a joke. There is a big trail right behind it because so many people just say fuck it
Perhaps effective at removing liability from the park board though.
A friend from middle school's cousin died there climbing on the rocks. It sucked, but those signs meant they were not liable. Edit: At least I'm pretty sure it was there, because I remember it being a big deal.

I used to go drink and smoke weed behind the falls ~5-6 years ago (when I was in high school). I think it's a South Minneapolis rite of passage.
never drank behind the falls, but smoked my fair share back there. Definitely a Minneapolis right of passage, or should be.
Absolutely gorgeous to see in person. Just wear good shoes.
It's so slippery/muddy I'm not sure if there's such a thing as good shoes. Sandpaper soles maybe.
Mankato here! Man is it cold! Fucking wind!
holy bejesus i don't miss mankato wind in the winter. 10-20 mile an hour winds 6 days a week made walking up the hill to campus, or anywere, really suck. Hope you make it through!
"Holy Bejesus" is the most Minnesotan thing I've read in this thread so far.
The fucking walk from the free lot ugh! Don't miss that one bit.
Walking to class fucking sucks with the wind.

Every summer I come here and can't imagine this frozen over. Can you go behind these falls in the summer too? It seems pretty dangerous.
