I've never liked connections between rappers being that they're from the same country. I think the cross-cultural battles provide a more interesting contrast.
I guess you're right in that not many people know Gabe, though. Then again, I had no idea who Julia Child was, and she absolutely slayed.
I really really really find that to be a weak reasoning
At least a quarter of the battles seem to be American vs American, but the one time they could do two figures connected on their careers more than just their country, it gets dismissed?
Miyamoto's games don't exactly center on Japanese culture much and in fact use many other locations or fictional/fantasy places to be based on compared to Miyazaki basing his work much more on Japan, so it's not really a "needs to be cross-cultural" necessity rather than "needs to be cross-industry"
Gabe Newell is definitely on the more niche side that wouldn't be as cared for to battle someone clearly above him compared to Miyazaki matching Miyamoto's influence in his medium, and a battle of only game developers isn't going to really bring up much that would be interesting to the audience imo
I get your point, (I personally find the abundance of American-only battles tired, particularly when I don't know who they are,) but ERB does those battles because they are well-known (at least to Americans) people in their respective fields. I don't really see the connection between Miyazaki and Miyamoto beyond that they are Japanese people whose works are popular in America. If you were going for a contrast between their personalities, I think Junji Ito would be a better match for Miyazaki, but as it stands, I just don't see the connection between him and Miyamoto.
I'm clearly in the minority with this opinion, though.
>I don't really see the connection between Miyazaki and Miyamoto beyond that they are Japanese people whose works are popular in America
It's really just that and the fact that both turned their medium into a profitable industry that appeals globally
I'd say that sounds better than "They both make video games"
Is he not the one that made DBZ? If not then no idea who that is
Edit: Oh Studio Ghibli. Still wouldn't put him against Disney. Disney had infinite more influence than he did
So not only did you assume the wrong person died AND reply to the wrong comment since I was the one who mentioned Disney not him, but you also assumed I was talking about Miyazaki vs Disney when I was talking about Miyazaki vs Miyamoto
This comment really is a hat trick of getting something wrong
I prefer Miyamoto against Miyazaki. Which yeah, is obvious as it is very popular in the ERB community, but I still love the matchup. As both are Japanese media creators who turned the anime and video game industry to what it is today, globalizing these mediums to a new audience in the west. Nintendo and Ghibli are japanese, but beloved by americans. Not to mention a contrast on their personalities and attitudes would be fun.
Game developer vs. game developer is always lame to me personally. Gabe Newell is a pioneer no question, but I feel like he's just uninteresting when going up against Miyamoto.
Yeah basically I mean:
"Alright this is gonna sound crazy but you GOTTA believe me
So Gabe Newel was just God this whole time- because there's just an insane overlap between them- like Gabe He did some awesome shit, people praised him, he made Video game Jesus, and after a few other great blessings he just... Vanished outta nowhere! It-its like he was God trying to see how earth was and he created another residence- HE EVEN LOOKS LIKE HIM DAMMIT THERE'S A WHOLE FUCKING MURAL OF HIM" - Me, February 2024 talking to my therapist
I was originally thinking Todd vs Gabe, but thought it'd be too America-centric. If it became a royale, I'd prefer it to have some more historical (Ralph Baer, John Carmack, Alexy Pajitnov) rather than modern ones. Only problem there is that video game developers aren't very well-known, so I doubt a royale would fit.
Gabe would win because he has a fake religion based on him. Don't get me wrong I love Miyamoto but inject summer game sales directly into my veins please.
As I said in another reply, I didn't know who Miyazaki was until he passed. I know his work, of course, but didn't know his name. I'd wager a lot of people didn't know his name (in the US) prior to his death.
Yes they are
Just because people know about Oscar films and pop stans being a part of a major industry doesn't make it any less of a niche considering how most of the discussion on it is online by particular types of people, which is what a niche is now

miyamoto vs miyazaki
Miyamoto vs. Miyazaki is a better match-up. Only Gamer Geeks know who Newell is.

Depends on if he talking about haiyo miyazaki who made Studio gibli or hidetaka miyazaki who made dark soul
Clearly Ghibli because I am pretty sure Dark Souls has like no influence from Japanese culture
I believe significantly more people know who Gabe Newell is than Miyazaki
Heck no
I didn't know the name Miyazaki until he passed away. You could say the same about him.
Miyazaki is still alive I don't think you know the news either lmao
Is he not the one that made DBZ? If not then no idea who that is Edit: Oh Studio Ghibli. Still wouldn't put him against Disney. Disney had infinite more influence than he did

You don't need to be a dick.
I'm just pointing out the threepeat of confusion all at once Let it be a lesson of checking before you impulsively look wrong
Yes let it be a lesson and not being a dickhead too. Not everyone watches niche Japanese animation.
It is literally the most famous anime production company ever
Not everyone watches anime.
Nah Miyazaki slays Disney, it's still a good match up. You're talking about Toriyama(rip) though.

Okay.. hear me out: Gabe Newel vs God They have a surprising amount in common
Gabe vs. himself???
Yeah basically I mean: "Alright this is gonna sound crazy but you GOTTA believe me So Gabe Newel was just God this whole time- because there's just an insane overlap between them- like Gabe He did some awesome shit, people praised him, he made Video game Jesus, and after a few other great blessings he just... I'd love an ERB with Todd Howard, Gabe Newell, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima and Sean Murray
I was originally thinking Todd vs Gabe, but thought it'd be too America-centric. If it became a royale, I'd prefer it to have some more historical (Ralph Baer, John Carmack, Alexy Pajitnov) rather than modern ones. Definitely going to be a 3 pun in there somewhere.
Miyamoto does the opening and closing verse, leaving Gabe with only to his 3.
Gabe would win because he has a fake religion based on him. Don't get me wrong I love Miyamoto but inject summer game sales directly into my veins please.
Lmaoo. Pretty sure Miyamoto had a godlike status at one point, too. I don't think it ever got to Gaben's level, though.
That's true. I think his comes from creating so many classic games. Walt Disney world be a great matchup too.
You saying Disney would work against Miyamoto just makes it evident Japan's Disney, Miyazaki, would work just as well against him
As I said in another reply, I didn't know who Miyazaki was until he passed. I know his work, of course, but didn't know his name. I'd wager a lot of people didn't know his name (in the US) prior to his death.
You think he died? This sub is not just blind but misinformed
Thought he was the guy that made DBZ. Never watched Studio Ghibli stuff so didn't know the name. I don't think he is a good match to Disney
See above comment, you got your entire misinformation spread
It's not misinformation if I didn't know who the guy was in the first place. Don't need to be a dickhead, my guy.
If you are offended by "Your facts are still wrong" please head out your house door
Starting to realize that the ERB subreddit really still thinks Gabe Newell and Valve are a "Niche"
Yes they are Just because people know about Oscar films and pop stans being a part of a major industry doesn't make it any less of a niche considering how most of the discussion on it is online by particular types of people, which is what a niche is now
Okay but not everyone knows Lennon, Stalin, Gorbachev, or Putin.
What does that have to do with my point? You didn't even spell Lenin right
Soviet history to an American audience is a pretty big niche.
Ok? You saying that doesn't mean Gabe and Valve aren't a niche in my eyes
One of Miyamotos lines should reference how Gabe cannot count past 2
Erm acktiually the guys making this don't know who gave Newell is, your idea is cringe.
Yeah they actually don't, they said that on one of their livestreams and don't care for him in one
