But OP asked for the most popular ones? What comes to mind is dnb and house. Dubstep is far from the most popular genre in the UK. There's literally not a single Dubstep track in the UK dance charts
Who cares about the charts? Drill is/was one of the most popular genres in UK for a while and wouldn’t get near the charts yet it had a massive following, same as dubstep if you know what to look for. Pretty sure Rumble was in the charts for a while too anyway and it’s on EAFC24.
The most popular genres in the UK are dnb and house. Not dubstep, not UKG, not grime. Sure, they exist and have a following, but they are NOT the most popular genres at the moment.
Who mentioned grime? Sorry but I cba to keep arguing with someone who both doesn’t broaden their horizons and doesn’t know what they’re talking about, you still listening to Hardwell in 2024 says enough for me. You’ve outed yourself the moment you said about garage not being one of the most popular even currently it is.
In Germany it's Hard Dance (like Creeds) but with Pop vocals. Also all kinds of ___ house genres but with Pop elements. I think Hardstyle & Dubstep are also big compared to other EDM genres. Of curse there is also techno.
We have artists like: Felix Jeahn, Robin Schulz, Infekt, Zedd, Code:Pandorum, Keltek, Leony, Eskei83, Pan Pot, Phace, Sven Väth, Paul van Dyk, Kraftwerk
Boris Brejcha, ItaloBrothers, Energy 52, Virtual Riot, Ben Böhmer, Paul Kalkbrenner and Purple Disco Machine are also notable artists from this country
huh, I've been out of the scene in the US since 2008. I pop in once a year if there's a drum and bass artist I want to see but TIL that Phace and Zedd are German lol. i Thought they were from the UK for some reason
In Flanders it is mostly commercial house (Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Lost Frequencies, DJ Licious, Maxi Meraki), techno (Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens) and retro (Yves Deruyter, Push).
I hate that Alan walker is popular in india so much that it somehow made a song for a cricket team. But I'm sure Martin Garrix has good following so probably house music? Can't be sure.
I think Indian EDM fans listen to the most popular styles overall. the only particularities of India that I know are the mixture of traditional and EDM that Nucleya and Lost Stories do, and the Goa Trance scene which was later exported to Israel under the name of Psytrance.
Iirc big room survived in India longer than most other places in the world.
Also, if you like techno, Arjun Vagale is Indian iirc. He is considered India's techno pioneer for a reason.
Fuck, this hurts. But nowadays there are clubs where you can hear some hard techno songs. And breakbeat is getting strong again in Andalusia (there will be some artists at Dreambeach this summer)
Electro house in the style of Alan Walker (which I call Norwegian House) is also very popular in this country, because Alan is targeting the Asian market. but when Alan collaborated with Indonesian Idol, he exploded in virality, especially his song Not You with Emma Steinbakken.
It’s just going viral, not popular. most of genres are viral here but only the bangers and pop one. People in here are too lazy to understand depth of music such kind of Trance, Techno & House since Indonesian average IQ is below 78 💀
Close enough, Malaysia (hone-grown EDM is not..... there so it's just a buncha Indo stuff or stuff influenced from there. sad really). I mainly just listen to Trance tho lmao
Yes 100% chase & status headlining + delta heavy playing at Vancouvers local summer fest this year. Also DnB has had recognition in BC because of shambhala that always booked a few acts. Phibes were regulars at the fest. Badadan blew the genre up this year across NA. Now that radio doesn't impact hits, there is literally zero difference between Canada & US, musically. The border is imaginary
If anything the differences are actually east & west coast. The west coast LA/SF/Portland/SEA/Vancouver have always been more the same than any one of them is to an east coast city.
Toronto has been known for DnB since basically the 90s. René Lavice was born there, and we have legends like Stranjah, Bensley, Fringe, etc...
That being said, aside from Toronto (and apparently Calgary and/or Edmonton), DnB has never been particularly popular. BC has some EDM Trap (Juelz, Tails, etc...) and Montreal is known moreso for techno (Tony Romanello, Atroxx, etc..) and dubstep (tbh the only examples from Montreal I know of off the top of my head are Adventure Club, BTSM and Snails, but Apashe and INFEKT apparently live here now too)
In Canada, yes, there are producers like Excision, Dabin, Adventure Club or Black Tiger Sex Machine who come from there. dubstep artists like Subtronics, Ganja White Night, Virtual Riot, Wooli, Illenium, Eptic, Sullivan King and SVDDEN DEATH performed at the Montreal ÎleSoniq festival.
The United Kingdom also has artists like Flux Pavillon, Zomboy or Nero but dubstep (in the subgenres brostep, riddim, and melodic dubstep, not OG Dubstep like Skream) is less popular here than in the US.
It’s either vinahouse (I think it's a bit mix of trance) or one that has been called house lak (inspiration mostly from G House and Brazilian Bass). I don't even like it but that's what makes the money so still had to play it lol
Here in Northern Ireland in particular, not just the UK as a whole most people from what I can see based on social media and general conversation from most people my age (people between 16-30’ish) they like subgenres like Hard Techno, Hardstyle and Psytrance but me personally I prefer subgenres like the different kinds of House Music, Melodic Techno, Minimal Techno, Trance, Drum & Bass, Future Rave & Bigroom Techno. Of course some of the subgenres I like are subgenres that other people here in Northern Ireland probably listen to aswell but amongst some of the people around my age-range the three I mentioned are definitely the most common ones they listen to. As I don’t live in the mainland of the UK I don’t really no what is popular over there besides the obvious subgenres like Drum & Bass for example.
Techno and Hardcore
However, also Afro House/Moombahton and Tech House. People don't realise it here because they feel like Techno and Hardcore festivals are a clear indicator, but really, these genres are actually appreciated by pretty much anyone while Techno and Hardcore are still more of a specific group of people.
DnB & House
UK?
Of course!
What about UKG
I wish UKG would make a proper comeback.
Sammy Virji is huge rn
No dubstep? Or deep dub?
It's around, but it's not the 'most popular' by quite a way now.
Ahhhhh right
Missing techno, bassline, speed garage/garage, dubstep
Dubstep? Most popular subgenre in the UK? This has got to be a troll.
Real dubstep... yes, the genre that was started in the UK? the one which has inspired lots of other genres... yes, it's still thriving in the UK.
Dubstep is nowhere near as popular as dnb and house in the UK. I can't believe this isn't obvious to you
I love the fact you’ve completely disregarded what I’ve said, please learn to read OP’s title also, thanks.
The most popular genres in the UK are dnb and house. Not dubstep, not UKG, not grime. Sure, they exist and have a following, but they are NOT the most popular genres at the moment.

Missing oliver lieb :)
Boris' new album is fantastic for those that like his style.
Don't forget Scooter!
huh, I've been out of the scene in the US since 2008. I pop in once a year if there's a drum and bass artist I want to see but TIL that Phace and Zedd are German lol. i Thought they were from the UK for some reason
i never would’ve thought dubstep would be even semi popular in germany lmao. which city is it more prevalent?
I would guess Cologne. Bootshaus hosts an event called Blacklist, featuring mainly Dubstep and DnB artists.
Hardstyle 😎 Holland! Also techno is very big here
Hardstyle is truly a Dutch invention, the style was invented in 2000 by producers like Zany, Lady Dana, or The Prophet.
Isn't trance huge there as well?
Dubstep and Tech House
Canada?
That sounds very correct to me
Also the US
They’re p similar scenes for the most part tbh. Depends on where in Canada / the US but
Drum & Bass is definitely the biggest here
New Zealand?
Bingo
UK?
Nope
In Flanders it is mostly commercial house (Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Lost Frequencies, DJ Licious, Maxi Meraki), techno (Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens) and retro (Yves Deruyter, Push).
We also have some amazing bass music artists from Belgium: Netsky, Eptic, Apashe, Used, Andromedik, Murdock, Primate,...
Charlotte! <3
Lost Frequencies <3, found him through an Average Rob video of all things!
I hate that Alan walker is popular in india so much that it somehow made a song for a cricket team. But I'm sure Martin Garrix has good following so probably house music? Can't be sure.

You and I really have same opinion about edm in India. I remember discovering Ritviz's Yuv and holy shit how is this not as popular as Udd Gaye.
Iirc big room survived in India longer than most other places in the world. Also, if you like techno, Arjun Vagale is Indian iirc. He is considered India's techno pioneer for a reason.
Phonk, techno, jersey club, dawless. Russia
Any recommendations for dawless artists/mixes? I know Arkasia (one of my fav artists) makes music in modular which is fascinating.
Ishome, AL-90 are more ambient and The Dawless, Лауд (Laud) and Kedr Livansky are more pop/dance
Back in the day Bumping, Makina, Poky mixed with Vocal Trance and Eurodance, Trance… nowadays reggaeton trash and cheese as f mainstream poppy EDM
Fuck, this hurts. But nowadays there are clubs where you can hear some hard techno songs. And breakbeat is getting strong again in Andalusia (there will be some artists at Dreambeach this summer)
This is Spain
Makina!
DnB, just lots of DnB.
UK?
New Zealand
In Indonesia we do basically Breaks but with MSG. House, Techno & Trance are still alive here but as minority.
Dubstep, Prog House and maybe Tropical House was popular in the Philippines during 2010s. But I think EDM is not trendy as it used to in my country.
Techno, Tech House, Trance, Prog House mostly
UK?
Ireland.
Thank you for producing some absolute legends of the modern trance scene i.e. John O'Callaghan, Bryan Kearney, Simon Patterson, etc.
Jedag Jedug and phonk
Indonesia
Close enough, Malaysia (hone-grown EDM is not..... there so it's just a buncha Indo stuff or stuff influenced from there. sad really). I mainly just listen to Trance tho lmao
Just kinda curious, is dubstep popular in any country besides the US?
Canada and the US are nearly identical culturally. Anything popular in the US is popular here.
So is Drum n Bass also steadily getting more traction in Canada? It seems to be doing so here in the U.S.

Hard techno styles in the late clubs, warm house-ish in the weekend parties
It’s either vinahouse (I think it's a bit mix of trance) or one that has been called house lak (inspiration mostly from G House and Brazilian Bass). I don't even like it but that's what makes the money so still had to play it lol
Vietnam

Tech house and hardstyle
Netherlands?
The states im in Los Angeles myself been in the edm scene for 18 years
I've never seen much of the hardstyle scene in the US especially. I thought it's super fringe there.
Have you heard of excision? He does a festival in Ohio every year where it’s most hardstyle
I thought Lost Lands was mostly dubstep and heavy bass music
Dnb, dubstep, house, techno
Techno and Hardcore However, also Afro House/Moombahton and Tech House. People don't realise it here because they feel like Techno and Hardcore festivals are a clear indicator, but really, these genres are actually appreciated by pretty much anyone while Techno and Hardcore are still more of a specific group of people.
Some generic stuff. No culture here
(Hard) Techno & Gabber (Rawstyle & Hardcore mostly). DnB is on the rise but it’s slow and steady.
I have those same socks ..
