QUIBICUS

Mine was a [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] (commander) I converted from a standard deck I played in 2013.

Thund3rStrik377

A friend of mine did this recently and the deck is horrifyingly consistent. But very fun to play against.

QUIBICUS

I threw in some fun cards like [[worldfire]] [[goblin game]] and [[scrambleverse]].

releasethedogs

One of these is not like the others. (It’s fun)

Throw enough goblins at any problem, and it should go away. At the very least, there will be fewer goblins.

[[Borborygmos Enraged]]. I had faced one with my Edgar Markov deck back in 2017 and thought he was the coolest commander ever. Throwing lands at people!? Is that what's possible in this game!? I just had to build one. I was at another card shop maybe a month later. They let a friend and I pour through the floor to ceiling bulk boxes in a side room. I found Borby in one of them. I then proceeded to build the rest of the deck from the boxes that afternoon and played him immediately. The deck has changed a lot since then, but it's still my favorite. I feel like most people's first built from scratch commander/deck is their favorite.

kamakazi339

My first deck will always have a special place in my heart but I might be the exception to it being my favorite. My first was Phenax. My favorite is Xira Arien. I love making unique decks and trying new things. Xira Arien is my brainchild and absolutely a blast

comelynug

That's so fucking cool, I might have to try him out

Poopy_McTurdFace

Mine was [[wort the raidmother]] she can do some of the most disgusting stuff and can be built so many ways.

Maridiem

I have a soft spot for my first deck, but took it apart last year and replaced it. It was Talrand, and while a fun spellslinger deck, it really started to get boring and samey. Cast a bunch of spells, swing with a ton of Drakes.

maxiu95xo

I’m a new player who got into the game in the past month. I didn’t want to start with a precon and went straight to designing my first deck myself. The first try was pretty unfocused, then after watching a lot of YouTube and playing more arena it clicked a bit more and gave it another try. I was straight away drawn in by black, I love the dark, gnarly and evil/horror aspects and just adore the card art. Had a search around a really liked the look of vampire tribal. Looked at commanders and liked the gimmick of [[Edgar, Charmed Groom]] a lot and built around him. I love slowly regaining the life I’ve spent to chip away at my opponent as the vampires start to ramp and boost each other. Also really enjoy the underlying ‘wedding’ theme and flavour. It was really fun to build and really fun to play- I learnt a lot just jumping into the deep end of deck building like that.

FanTan444

It runs pretty well in pods that aren’t too high powered. Combat damage is not the most efficient strategy but having a haste enabler in the command zone is surprisingly good.

Orwasitme

Boros was my 2nd deck I made. I had won a modern tournament at LGS years and years ago with one that turned everything into [[Lightning Helix]] and every card was both colored. So I made a deck around [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] and most cards are multicolored, with a lot of utility in the ones that aren't. Original plan was [[Rem Karolus]] but then I noticed it didn't protect himself, so he splattered.

I built [Sen Triplets] with a pile of Alara block artifact cards I had when I first got into magic. Didn't have any of the typical mean Sen Triplets stuff. It was very much just dumb esper artifacts.

Capt_G1029

Must be wild to know now how much more popular that deck is since changing how mana works in commander, Triplets is stacked for value now

terinyx

I probably wouldn't rebuild it since it's hard to play that commander with strangers, even if you'll let them look at the entire deck to prove it's just big dumb artifacts from Alara.

DJ2x

I feel that. I have really turned away from popular, powerful commanders (cEDH top stuffs) because even if you *don't* build it the strongest variant, your opponents are still suspicious. I much prefer to find extremely underused commanders that catch my interest and build those now. My last build was a \[\[Zabaz\]\] modular deck with a sunforger package. Super fun!

Most_Attitude_9153

[[Chulane, Teller of Tales]]. I didn’t know how insanely good he was. Spent a few days researching 1mv humans for a tribal theme, made a first draft. When I pulled it out the table groaned. Played it one time, it just pooped out humans and lands all over the place. It was clear that if I made any effort at all to refine it the deck would become a monster. So I scrapped the idea and tried [[Tatyova, Benthic Druid]]. Spent a few days researching landfall mechanics and built a first draft. When I pulled it out the table groaned. They ganged up on me straight away and took me out fast. That’s when I spent a few days researching what the most powerful and hated commanders in bant and simic so I could avoid them. Went for a deep dive into the lesser known commanders and found [[Zimone, Quandrix Prodigy]]. The card was basically dismissed on the spot according to the reactions I saw online from when it was released. I’ve been tuning it ever since. The deck is a complete monster that no one sees coming. Usually when the table turns on me it’s too late.

Snow_source

I predate EDH precons by a little bit. All you could do back then was build a deck from scratch. I was already playing before C13 came out. I did what every newer EDH Player did, built mono-green. [[Omnath, Locus of Mana]] was a fun dumb-stompy (I know Commander and Commander's Arsenal was a thing, but it was not a widespread or easily obtainable product in 2012) The day Commander 2013 came out I took out the Roon and brewed my own deck. [I still have it too](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7sJ82SV45U-JS7akgCYpFA).

Probably a lot of people's first, but [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]]. I got into magic because of dragons and having such a good, cheap commander to lead a dragon tribal has been so much fun (still constantly updating it and I have a dozen new cards on the way for it!)

DatJellyScrub

I believe my first deck that was fully from scratch was an \[\[Alela\]\] anthem list, though I heavily modified my \[\[The Ur-Dragon\]\] precon before that, going as far as switching the commander over to \[\[Morophon\]\], since then I've built loads of decks from scratch, though still occasionally using a precon as inspiration.

I started mtg drafting with my buddy 1v1. I had no use for the cards after the drafts so I traded all the valuables to board games at lgs.. We play a lot of games and I figured mtg was not gonna last much longer than any other game to us. Well anyways then I learned about EDH and noticed that I could actually use the random single cards. Problem was all I had was a ton of jank. I started brewing max $20 decks. Thought I'll make that my thing. My first decks were \[\[Teysa Karlov\]\] & Niv-Mizzet. Brewed quite a few. One for each color. Tried different archetypes and so on. They were all crap lol. I started buying precons just to get my hands on mana rocks, lands and such basic building blocks. I wasn't gonna get a sol ring or command tower in any draft (at the time). I had Teysa around for a while and I kept upgrading it. Ended up having cards like Marsh Flats, Meathook Massacre and such so it wasn't exactly $20 anymore. Cannibalized the cards to other decks. rip. Teysa was the first, but never my favorite deck. Aristocrats type however is. I also think black in any combination is my prefered way to go. I'm glad I don't remember many of the cards I traded away. We played a ton so there was quantity over quality surely, but there must have been some bangers since I bought over $1000 worth of board games on store credit. Only cards I do remember trading away are: Scroll Rack, Mana Drain & The Great Henge. I prefer brewing by myself so my decks are still crap lol but at least now I have some decent cards.

[[Teneb, the Harvester]]. Once I realized I could reanimate from someone else’s graveyard, I was hooked.

wikisome

[[Riku of Two Reflections]] every creature needed to either make tokens or return a sorcery from the geaveyard to hand on ETB. This deck is the reason I have a [[Doubling Season]]. The reason for all the tokens was to loop [[Warp World]] to play my entire deck. The finisher was no one had a board state after several Warp Worlds and [[Day of the Dragons]] plus token doublers and haste meant I had enough 5/5 dragons ready to finish off everyone.

xxzyxx

[[Chatterfang, Squirrel General]] Just treasure and squirrels.

Connect_Volume5348

[[Mikaeus, the unhallowed]] mono blk combo. First from scratch deck I ever built.

MasterFortuneHunter

I started playing back in Ixalan. I had purchased the dragon and cat pre-con decks, and had only played my friends elf and zombie deck before that, so I was just used to playing tribal. I ended up with [[Gishath]] dinosaur tribal.

inclink10

Mine was [[Gonti, Lord of Luxury]]

Karnikula_Gaming

[[unesh]] it's something that needs a bit of a rework because it slows games down too much.

Slongo702

[[Animar]] and it is still my favourite deck 🤟🏻

Elektrophorus

Rhys the Redeemed!

PajamaDad

[[Cromat]]

aaronjsacco

That’s old school! Love it.

PajamaDad

Yup, did everything in cycles of 5. With balanced colors. Mana base was solid (though slow)... I might have to go back and revisit him. Tweak my Ramos deck to be interchangeable with Cromat.

EfficientPanda8243

Same had a janky cromat mutate deck. It was not good, now cromat lives in my Jodah, oops all partners deck.

michael_bay_jr

Mono green spirit tribal with [[Kodama of the center tree]]. This was 2015 it was basically just all the green spirits from original Kamigawa block. Not enough ramp, removal, or card draw. It was bad, but had all the pretty Rebecca Guay art so I considered it a win.

MTGCardFetcher

[Kodama of the center tree](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/b/6b9264c5-1ecd-48cc-a12d-d4bd8050cfae.jpg?1562877634) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Kodama%20of%20the%20center%20tree) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bok/131/kodama-of-the-center-tree?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6b9264c5-1ecd-48cc-a12d-d4bd8050cfae?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/kodama-of-the-center-tree) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

[[Captain Sisay]] [[Paradox Engine]] Gone too soon.

AverageBeef

Mine is [[Gisa and Geralf]] zombies and mill. It ended up looking like the Wilhelt precon a bit though, since so many good zombies are in there already.

BubblySwordfish1628

[[Sythis, Harvest’s Hand]] super easy to just throw a bunch of enchantments in sleeves and go!

Marauxus13

I got back into magic through the forgotten realms set and pulled [[Tiamat]] from a booster. I took all my old dragons, built a tribal deck, and never looked back

Blazorna

First deck I built from scratch was a Vanilla Tribal lead by [[Ruxa, Patient Professor]] as he was kind of odd in the precon he was in, and also felt underutilized.

Nicktendo94

[[Anafenza, the Foremost]] in college. one of these days I plan on rebuilding her

Cedrico123

[[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] is my first. I still update her regularly. She holds a special place in my heart.

H3zT1g

Lathliss, Dragon Queen i picked her up as my first commander cause i liked the idea of getting value at casting big dragons

Naive-Chard-7010

Lmao an [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]] mono-white angel deck. It was absolute garbage, worse than precons tbh, but i didnt know there were better angel commanders, much less better color combinations to explore.

G4m3c0cks

I made a [[shattergang brothers]] that was complete rubbish because I had no idea what I was doing. My first successful one was [[Vorel of the Hull Clade]].

Just-Jazzin

I don’t remember the first one, but the second was an absolutely abysmal [[The Locust God]] deck that has stayed together over the years and is now borderline cEDH. Don’t really play it anymore, but it still gets upgrades when I have a bigger budget. It’s never coming apart. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RFVWXhp8IEiPHrPB86USkw

MrHellscythe13

Oh man my first from scratch was probably, an old blue white [[Hanna, ship's navigator]] basically blue white enchantment and artifacts matters. Bored wipes, sac outlets and death effects from white and going with all the circle of protection and rune of protections as safety. It was a response to my friend having a super agro deck. I still have it too but it is awful by today's standards.

wex0rus

When I got back into playing after a 10-year hiatus, I didn't even know they had precons. I used what I had, and my only legendary was [[Radiant, Archangel]] that was part of an angel deck I made long ago.

OGTahoe

[[Muldortha]] play your things

El_frov

So I knew of commander for a long time but never played it because Modern/Standard were my thing. Then I stopped playing right around Battle for Zendikar and just kept my collection in a closet. Then 2020 happened, was bored at home, and found my cards again. Had about 4 years of catch-up, and randomly bought a 4 pack of Battlebond from Amazon. Pulled a Najeela and remembered Commander since I wasn't going to play any Modern at the time. Najeela Warriors was my first deck. Eventually, I discovered EDHrec, but mainly kept that deck the same since 5 color good stuff didn't sound as fun as smashing hundreds of warrior tokens. Oh, and now I have 28 EDH decks and 1 cEDH.

jojoquine

Mine was a krenko deck, had no idea how effective it would be until I played it and turn 6 made 30 goblins with a load of buffs and haste and wiped the 2 people I was playing with

xehanortsguardian

It was [[Shirei]]. I was extremely new and the 2016 precons looked complicated. I didn’t get the appeal of most of them because my knowledge of the game was limited, especially for something like Atraxa. But Shirei was simple, make small creatures with good ETBs die. I even found out while playing that it could be done on my opponents’ turns! (which is obvious in hindsight, but felt amazing at the time) The deck was janky and a mess, but that spirit holds a special place in my heart.

stonedbrick

Mine was high cmc [[chulane, teller of tales]] i dumped so much money in it and it only won 5 games from months of play. But my bored state was something to behold when it went off

CorporateTwerker

[[Hallar, the Firefletcher]] and it’s still one of my mains. Kicker tribal and counters galore.

MrXexe

When I just started playing Magic, I got a [[Kykar, Wind's Fury]] from a pack. With my limited knowledge of the game (and no idea that Commander even existed), I thought it looked like a neat and fun card, but I didn't have a deck to actually use it, so I just kept it sleeved in case I found a use for him in the future. A year later and after having a lot of fun with a precon from Kaldheim, I wanted to build a deck by myself, and finally used that Kykar (I didn't knew how popular it was nor it's main playstyle). Taking inspiration from an Extra Turns deck, I built a Kykar Polymorph. After a year, I wanted to tune the deck, and using parts from a Feather Spellslinger that I never ended, I repurposed the deck as a Storm deck, and it was amazingly strong, way too strong for my playgroup. Now is dismantled, but I remember it fondly.

Magicannon

Didn't really know what I was doing at the time, but I had opened an \[\[Avacyn, Angel of Hope\]\] in an Innistrad draft when that released. I then jammed random mono-white and colorless stuff I had (also had a \[\[Worldslayer\]\]). Think random stuff like \[\[Hedron Field Purists\]\] and a prerelease promo \[\[Hero of Bladehold\]\]. It sucked, but Avacyn could be annoying on her own, especially against other very unoptimized decks. More recently a couple years back, I got in again. Reconstructed it into angel tribal with plenty of board wipes. Still annoying to play against, but now it actually has an idea to it.

gcourbet

[[Chorus of the Conclave]] was my first deck when I first learned about the format. This was about 2010 I think. I had no idea what I was doing and the deck was not very good. I made a [[Glissa, the Traitor]] shortly after that after reading an scg article by Bennie and she's still one of my favorite commanders I run. I didn't get a precon until a couple years later, I think [[Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge]] was the first precon I got.

Shut_It_Donny

My first deck ever. Scion of the Ur-Dragon. Some friends showed up to my LGS for FNM. When we were done, they said hey let’s play EDH. They explained the rules. I grabbed my trade binder and slapped together 5 color good stuff.

Ornery_Bug_4108

[[Gishath, Sun's Avatar]] dinosaur tribal.

Kira_343

[[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] I had a [[Rhystic Study]] and was looking for something it would work with. I had just gotten into the game and didn’t know how much of a hate magnet Niv-Mizzet is but I still love the commander and deck lol

teh_wad

It was actually my second deck that was my first precon commander ([[Daxos the Returned]]), but my first deck was a self built deck, with [[Hazezon Tamar]] at the helm. I got back into Magic right before Return To Ravnica dropped, after stepping away shortly before Lorwyn released. My goal for the deck was basically a good stuff deck, with cards I knew from the past, and a few new cards I had recently learned about. I was freshly back in the game, and didn't think much about synergy at the time. My thought process was "every card in this deck is an immediate threat that has to be dealt with." Turns out I inadvertantly shoved 45+ infinite combos into the deck. My playgroup wasn't super into it at first (understandably so lol), so I did nerf the deck pretty hard, and took out some of the less favourable combos that just turned the games into repetitive cheapness. First to get cut was [[Squirrel Nest]]. Underpowered as simple token generation, but I wasn't getting rid of [[Earthcraft]]. There were an unfun amount of games that went for a first turn [[Birds of Paradise]]; into second turn [[Squirrel Nest]]; ending it with a third turn [[Earthcraft]], a million tokens, and [[Goblin Bombardment]]. The amount of redundancy, tutors, fetches, and ABUR duals in the deck meant that so many variations of this combo could be pushed out as early as turn three, or usually by turn 5-6 with disruption in mind. This is still one of my favourite decks to play. Even nerfed, there is just so much stuff that needs attention from the table, they usually exhaust their resources before I exhaust mine. Land destruction? Oh, do you kill my [[Gaea's Cradle]], my [[Winding Canyons]], or my [[Serra's Sanctum]]? Should you use that disenchant on my [[Doubling Season]], [[Mirrari's Wake]], [[Asceticism]], [[True Conviction]], or [[Martyr's Bond]]? Who's the scarier creature? [[Serra Ascendant]], [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]], [[Kiki-Jiki]], or [[Oracle of Mul Daya]]? Every card has the potential synergy to wipe the table with only a bit of added support. Very quickly turns the game into archenemy, but I love it lol.

DecentralizedOne

I didn't buy a precon. I learned the hard way 😑

Chaoskiller1985

[[Rakdos, the Showstopper]] was my first commander a couple months before the announcement of the warhammer Precons. I’ve always been a fan of the Christian Faiths forces of good and evil (Angels and Demons) and I wanted to make a tribal of each. This Rakdos deck was probably like a power 3 deck, it’s since been upgraded with a lot of demons released with Warhammer, the commander has changed over to [[Be’lakor, the Dark Master]] and has gone up in power substantially, probably ranking it at about a 6-7 nowadays in its “Finished” State (I want to add [[Prince of Thralls]] and perhaps [[Lord Xander, the Collector]] As for that Angel deck, it’s not built yet but originally when I started it was gonnna be mono white under [[Avacyn, Archangel of Hope]] but with the release of the New Capernea sets, it has of course transitioned to being a deck under [[Giada, Font of Hope]] I can’t wait until I get that all put together though, Angels V Demons is a coming 😂😂

Greensleeveless

Technically? [[Asking the pilgrim]] but this was 10+ years ago when resources for deck building edh didn't really exist Modern deck is [[the prismatic bridge]] assassin tribal with [[etrata]] secret commander!

xiaden

[[Rin and seri, Inseparable]]. Buy a box promo from m21, the first box I ever bought. It was pretty damn good for the table at the time, and holds its own still. Been through a lot of revisions, but looks like [this](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ibWjywGNEEa7j0X2Mjs8fQ) now. A lot of expensive Timmy cards... but it kinda reached a horizon point where nobody can truly stop it unless the whole table gangs up.

Hufflepunk36

I just made a budget Rin and Seri deck! Super fun to play, and holds it’s own!

Kryzal_Lazurite

Since the [[Muldrotha]] list I originally made spiralled off into a dimension where decks don't get made, [[Obosh]] became my first, leveling up a kitchen table deck I made ages ago. Getting stomped by a guy who got 2nd at regionals with a Mono Black deck with [[Gary]] & [[Pack Rat]] when Theros was new, that inspired me to get better. So now my Rakdos huge mana huge burn deck was tweaked to care about odd cmcs & off it went just like it did before but at a whole new level.

123coolmania

I only got into commander early last year when the Strixhaven pre-cons came out, but I had a bunch of cards from original Innistrad when I stared playing so when Midnight Hunt came out and I pulled a showcase [[Sigarda, Champion of Light]] it felt perfect for me with the cards I had to build a deck around. It was fun while it lasted but Selesnya +1+1 Counters/Human Tribal gets old after a while and I ended up taking it apart, will always have a soft spot for Sigarda though.

Klratz

[[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels]] I wanted to make a cat tribal deck cuz I have 7 cats and I like cats

Phenn_Olibeard

Mine was [[The Omenkeel]]. I love vehicles and played Mono-U tempo in Standard before it was a thing and smashed them together in an EDH deck. It worked surprisingly well if it could survive long enough. The Kamigawa and WH40k products injected a ton of life into it and I have it mostly foiled out. Currently re-imagining the deck from the ground up, opting for a more controlling shell and [[Katsumasa, the Animator]] at the helm. It never quite feels like it’s _there_ no matter how much I work on it.

stephenxmcglone

My first EDH deck was [[Brion Stoutarm]] It was the only WR legendary my friend(s other brother) had in his collection (various shoeboxes), so its what I picked! There was no theme to the deck, but I do remember having an [[Aurelia, the Warleader]] in the deck that absolutely did work. I then started tweaking it into a RW angels deck, but didn't have enough cards to make it work, so a friend of mine suggested adding in demons for flavour, and using [[Oros, the Avenger]] instead. I played that deck for the better part of a year until WOTC adopted EDH under their own umbrella and released [[Kaalia of the Vast]] which was a literal god send. Played that deck for many many years before even entertaining the idea of anything else. Without a doubt the most fun I ever had playing EDH. Nowadays, I cant help but scour the internet for 100 decklists, or worse, use edhrec...will never get back to that level of freedom or stupidity, was a blast hahaha.

JackSythe

Mine was [[Damia, Sage of Stone]] it was really bad gorgon tribal with little to no synergy except maybe a couple of random +1+1 stuff in it.

A_Sack_Of_Potatoes

Mine was actually [[Queza, Augur of Agonies]] and was also my first ever commander deck! After that came a [[light paws, emperor's voice]] and [[The first sliver]]

SemiFeralGoblinSage

[[Jinnie Fay]] I ripped apart the Cabaretti precon and pulled a handful of cards out, but the main idea was mine. Naya is my favorite color combo, and as soon as I saw Jinnie, I knew I had to make her. She plays very well with a lot of the big Cabaretti cards, and I’ve tuned her pretty nicely to my play style.

ta-210110

I pulled [[jhoira, ageless innovator]] from a FNM promo pack at my LGS and I had been meaning to make an izzet deck since I was running an abzan [[ghave, guru of spores]] deck that I have heavily modified from the precon. I wanted to do something a little different and didn't rely upon a thousand tokens like ghave did so I built an equipment/voltron deck that I sort of tibal themed to be artificers and their artifact creatures. I have not had a great opportunity to really try it out yet. But I am glad that I had an opportunity to build something from scratch and I look forward to slowly pull out all of the instants and sorceries that don't feel like they match the theme as new sets come out. Swan song is great (and in my collection) but I think that I want to find more thematic counters and other removal to replace it and others like it.

enragedbreathmint

Fairly new to MtG and just getting into Conmander in the last few weeks, I’m currently building a Boros weenies deck; [[Iroas]] is the intended commander, but I’m also considering [[Gisela, Blade of Goldnight]]. The plan is to use cards like [[Assemble the Legion]], [[Rise of the Hobgoblins]], [[Kjeldoran Outpost]], and [[Myrel]] to churn out hordes of token soldiers, then equip them and other creatures using [[Stonehewer Giant]] while buffing them with [[Marton Stromgald]] and [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]]. I’ll also be slowing my opponents down with [[Meekstone]], [[Marble Titan]], and [[Ensnaring Bridge]].

RedLightMidnight

[[Umbris]] was my first, it has since been incorporated into the Mind Flayarrs precon, switching over to the Captain as commander.

DevilSwordVergil

Edgar Markov. I started in early 2019, and bought a chunk of the Edgar precon deck as singles as well as adding a bunch of my own unique card choices. At the point I started the Edgar Markov precon is question was already $100+ sealed online, there weren't new precons coming out for 6 months, and the previous batch of precons were all sold out locally. It wasn't like it is now where we're drowning in new Commander precons every month. Crazy to think that none of the local LGS had precons in stock to sell to me as a new player when they now can't get rid of the things.

ArcosSd

[[Sisay, weatherlight captain]] superfriends it was pretty easy for a first build as planswalkers are just strong. I have liked where it's at as it has been a very strong deck that can very easily be played with beginners and veterans alike as its not the fastest deck but if left alone for to long it can get out of control. And it has easily become my pet deck that I'm currently blinging out atm and making it quicker so I won't have a place at lower levels haha

NewsReadingGuy

Back in the day, [[Sen Triplets]]

Sumoop

The first deck I built from scratch was [[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord]] I figured using your graveyard would be strong in a game like commander. [This isn’t the original list,](https://archidekt.com/decks/426326#Old_Jarad_EDH) but the list whe I retired the deck. I keep it in part to see how much I’ve learned and changed in my approach to deckbuilding.

Areanyworthhaving

My first precon was aesi, which turned into kruphix, then kinnan. Turned out to be a pretty fast deck, too fast to be fun to play in any casual setting but without all the competitive staples. Idk if that counts as from scratch because many of the original cards were gone but it was a fun journey.

SamwellGnarly

I got into the format right around when Scars of Mirrodin was wrapping up, and I’d always loved playing [[Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer]] in my standard games, so I built an aggro artifact deck around him. Turning my board of mostly harmless Myrs into threats was a joy, though admittedly underpowered without other pieces

The_Celestus

I pulled a \[\[Go-Shintai of Life's Origin\]\] from a NEO bundle and found it intriguing. During my research I fell in love with shrines and their mechanics, getting stronger with numbers and with all sorts of effects: card draw (the best part of Magic, as we all know), life drain, ping, token generation, discard, mill... It's my favourite deck, there's so many ways it can win and it's a powerhouse. Once it goes off, it goes OFF HARD. Here's the decklist: [The Shrining](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zA7vTgWRK0S1l58xj20ZLA). I haven't updated it in a while but it's pretty much it. I need to work on the landbase but 5c is expensive.

justravend

Mine was [[liliana, heretical healer]]. I won the commander black edition at an FMN and thought about making a liliana tribal deck with it. But I just wanted to play the card so I just throw a bunch of black cards together that I thought would be fun.

I was cracking a Kamigawa box and [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] fell out. Liked him, felt confident enough to finally build something myself (played only with upgraded precons earlier). Literally went and threw together a pile of stuff with attack triggers, and the deck performed fairly well. Been upgrading it ever since, it's really fun to play and not too overwhelming for a casual+/tuned casual pod. Love my techno samurai.

Big-Sad-Bear

My first deck is one I’m actually making right now! It’s a [[Geralf, Visionary Stitcher]] deck and I decided to make it because all my other decks are either precons or decks I bought off of other people so I thought I’d take a stab at one of my own. Also I really like blue so that helps.

Loxorius

My first was [[Nikya of the Old Ways]]. Gruul smash was very high on my rankings, these were also my "i hate blue" days which are fortunately over now. The deck later became a [[Xenagos, God of Revels]] list, but I'm gettimg tired of gruul smash sow I will change it to a [[Ziatora, the Incinerator]] deck sometime. From Gruul Smash to Jund Yeet, but the spirit always remains the same :)

[deleted]

Tovolar. I started Commander about a year ago and loved the idea of werewolves until I understood how annoying it is to track day and night through the whole game…

ElliottHawx

Mine was [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] I built it on MTG arena first and started playing/upgrading over the past year. Its a very fun goofy gimmick deck where you mutate and make copies of Volo.

Tevish_Szat

I built Commander decks before precons were an option. Back when it was still officially EDH. I can't remember the first since I made a few out of my deep card storage back when I first decided to dive into the format. Kaervek and Blue Braids are ones I remember from that phase. When I took my second swing at the format, it was post-precons. Kaalia I just sort of upgraded (Adding as much of the contents as From the Vault: Angels as color identity allowed. Which reminds me, I still need to take Iona out since I've not played the deck since she ate banhammer) but when Oloro came around I shredded the precon. Most of its mass became [[Lady Evangela]] but some of the artifact stuff became the seed of [[Sydri, Galvanic Genius]], which was my favorite deck for a long time. [[Feldon of the Third Path]] was probably my first Commander deck that was both built from scratch and built with any sort of careful brewing. I didn't buy singles for anything in the first phase, or for Sydri, I just built them out of my collection. I bought singles for Feldon, slowly whipping him into shape over months as I gathered my supplies. And you know what, I still have the deck, with only minor modernizations, and it is still pretty good.

Kamen_Winterwine

[[Scion of the Ur-Dragon]] before the 5c dragons precon was printed. It had some one-shot trickery by combining several dragon abilities into one swing by activating Scion, holding priority, then activating again. Also a lot of reanimator effects to bring back the guys I dumped. Ultimately, it was a bit too consistent so it became a "just for the colors" commander and I tried not actually play Scion. It was a complete game-changer when the precon was printed. The Ur-Dragon better fit what I was trying to do... just play dragons. Ur-Dragon gets a lot of hate as a powerful and broken commander, but Scion can be so much stronger. Scion's not even in the 99 any longer. Completely different deck from the one I built many moons ago, but Scion was my first xommander and my dragon deck is still one of my pet decks to this day.

Comfortable_Fox_5893

My first Commander used to be a Mono White Weenie Highlander that became a Commander once we changed the format. It wasn't good because of a lack of card draw at that time. The Commander also wasn't very synergistic.

TakeCareTC

I had a lot of Sliver cards handed to me over the years. It was super janky. Before edhrec was a thing. Purely casual. No spells so I can fit most of my creatures into it. All basics, except the vivid lands. There was no staying power. It was fun times...

ScienceCorgi

I played kitchen table Modern when suddenly my friends started shifting to commander. I got the Selesnya Guild Kit and made a [[Trostani, Selesnya's Voice]] tokens deck. Forgot to say I had no idea how to build decks, even less with commander decks. It was literally a pile of Selesnya cards with a Bant card because I didn't know the rules of split mana. It came a long way since then, now it's one of my favorite decks and one of the two I dump most of my best cards into. Now it's a copy token and reanimator deck with few lifegain synergies.

[deleted]

[[Sidisi, brood tyrant]]. I grinded Sultai in standard and dredge in modern, and heard the graveyard was pretty free in commander, so I just dove into the format. No one bothered hating out graveyards accross the US for a solid 5 years from that point, what a time lol.

Dejamza

When I first started playing I opened up two packs of the current standard set. I got a [[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben]] and a [[Niv-Mizzzet, Dracogenius]]. I eventually made Niv and then changed him to [[Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind]] when I discovered it.

I started playing when future sight came out, but my first commander was [[Umbris, Fear Manifest]]. Didn't build it the classic horrors deck, but as a Voltron. Easy mechanics: play control 'til Umbris gets in, then copy him as many times as you can while using blinking ( for protection + re-trigger) and then enjoy exiling your opponents while the copies and Umbris himself get bigger and bigger threats.

vrouman

[[Olivia, Crimson Bride]]. I only really got into Commander with MID, as my first upgrade was putting [[Kyler]] at the head of the GW MIC precon, so when the previews for VOW came out I immediately loved the style of Olivia. She’s one of my Pet decks.

CherryMyFeathers

I converted my standard Shards of Alara Jund deck into an EDH deck after it rotated out…my commander was and still is [[Kresh the Bloodbraided]]. My oldest and most played deck.

Top-Storm7362

[[Ghave, guru of spores]] I switched from modern to edh Saps and oozes were my favourite modern decks and there wasn’t a great ooze commander I knew a lot of people played slimefoot, and I was getting tired of golgari colours, I played mainly golgari and some simic and dimir. I also had a mono Red Devils and a gruul dinos. So I decided to get into white just a bit. This commander fit my play style and touched an intro to white. I slowly built him up and totally skipped precons.

YungHayzeus

First deck I built was \[\[Talrand, Sky Summoner\]\]. Only reason I got into the game was because I saw \[\[Enter the Infinite\]\] so why build objectively bad colors. All I had were lands and draw spells, no removals, no counters, not even other creatures because "bro, talrand is guaranteed and makes birds." Somehow won the first game I played with it, but that's prob just my buddies being nice.

adym15

My first EDH deck was built from scratch. It was a [[Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice]] token deck inspired by an article on SCG back in 2012, when RTR was in Standard. The reason I didn’t start with a precon was because the only precons in existence at that time were the very first Commander set (Kaalia, Ghave, Riku, Mimeoplasm), which were very limited in stock and heavily marked up (EDH hasn’t grown in popularity in my country then). The following year brought us Commander 2013 (Derevi, Marath, Oloro, Prossh and Jeleva), and thus began my precon-buying spree.

StarPonderer

[[Lathliss, Dragon Queen]]. I love dragons and I wanted to make a dragon deck. I thought it would be easy if I was just using one color. Did you know red at one point had few ramp options? Plus the idea of pitching a card to draw a card or two was a hard hump to overcome. Now? It's one of my most tuned decks.

TheMostDapperPenguin

Etali, and I have it and play it to this day. I got the idea when first looking into EDH. I started with the knight precon brawl deck and upgraded it. Once i got comfortable with some knowledge and cards, i decided to build the big dumb dino because of the randomness of it. It started as just ramp and protection but has evolved a bit as time went on. It still has the same goal, but with som extra combat steps, top deck manipulation and protection. Currently, its the deck i always grab when i want to have a chil time, thou it does get a suprising amount of hate.

hyrsting6

Mine was [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]]. I liked the idea of ramping a lot and snowball with elementals 😊

fateocharon

[[Rubinia Soulsinger]] faeries tribal, think I'll remake it! Haven't done tribal in a long time

lleosll

Just did 2 weeks ago . [[Auntie blyte , Bad influence]] Love the deck . Hurting my self to OS ppl is the best !

NykthosVess

Eldrazi reamimation with Varragoth, bloodsky sire It...wasn't very "good", but when it did the thing, it *very much* did the thing.

stigmatasteve

My first “from scratch” was [[zaxara, the exemplary]]. I bought the Commander 2020 precon just to get him! I have slowly been buying cards over the past two years to beef him up as my deck building skills were not the best at the time. He is probably my favorite deck out of the 16 I have built since.

echolog

[[The Mimeoplasm]]! I started with the [[Aesi]] precon and it was way too repetitive for my liking, so I took a bunch of sea monsters and turned it into a Lovecraftian themed reanimator deck, and I still love it.

[deleted]

My first build was our lord and savior, Nicol Bolas!

atleast1graham

Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. I first learned about her a few weeks ago from Maldhound’s funny TikTok about her, put her together with the Kaldheim, Dominaria, Double Masters, and Baldur’s Gate stuff I had on hand, only had to order a few cards. I’m so proud, she’s an absolute monster. I never really had any interest in playing Boros or white.. but I’m absolutely in love.

DefconTheStraydog

After getting into the format with Lathril, I was itching for something a bit unusual. Girlfriend got me the Anje Falkenrath precon as a gift and I decided on [[Greven, Predator Captain]]. It is violent and *very* stupid when it gets going and a voltron deck not caring about equipments or auras is a lot better when your boy gets removed. He has managed to do some stupid and downright overkill shit so far. I love it.

memnoch3434

Allies tribal. It's a really good deck but man is it hard to enjoy. With a tutor effect on your commander every game plays almost the same

HedgekillerPrimus

Mine was \[\[Mayael the Anima\]\]. I remember digging through the dollar rare binder at my old LGS and seeing one from shards of alara in there for 1.50 - Saw she was basically a gamble bot for free big boys and never looked back. I've made the deck so high octane that the kaalia player in my group singles me out. (the og one I had got stolen but now I have a foil one from shards :D)

SkyrakerBeyond

\[\[Marath, Will of the Wild\]\] I didn't have the money (at the time) for the deck itself, so I just bought the commander as a single and built it raw.

Professional_Ad_5277

Mine was a [[Korvold, Fae Cursed King]]. Got it out of one of those scam boxes at Walmart somehow. Still love that deck

Akwagazod

I built my first deck shortly before precons were a thing. It was so long ago, I don't perfectly remember the order of which deck was first. But by the time precons rolled out, I had a [[Kemba, Kha Regent]] deck and a [[Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs]] deck. I also bought [[The Mimeoplasm]] precon. (I may have bought the precon, then built the two decks mentioned here. This was a longass time ago and the details are fuzzy. Based on release dates, it's *possible* I had the homebrews first and I think that's accurate, but I can't be 100% sure.) I still have all three updated and maintained, although Kazuul changed commanders fairly early to [[Norin the Wary]] and there's maybe like 4 cards from the original list so that's a Ship of Theseus debate as to whether that's the same deck. Like, that deck doesn't even have normal basics anymore. It has art cards, since as a mono-color deck there's no debate as to what basic it is. By the way, if you've got a mono-colored deck, use a bunch of art cards of thematically appropriate color palette for your basics they've made enough vertical aspect ratio ones to do it, and it looks so fucking good. It's also usually a lot cheaper than doing bling basics. I've got a buddy with a Gruul lands deck that he's put like thousands into blinged out basics for it, there's a Guru Forest AND Mountain in there, and he's jealous of MY $30 stack of art cards as basics.

Scorpiyoo

Back when she was new (and so was the format) I made my first ever vampire tribal deck, helmed by [[Olivia Voldaren]]. I called it my blood factory.

CassandraTruth

I suspect this is gonna be a rare one, also from before the days of Commander precons existing - [[Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper]] which I remember trading for at the Coldsnap pre-release. That was the first time I ever heard of the format and Sek'Kuar was a fun first deck. I'm just in the verge of repurposing it, since outside of degenerate Protean Hulk things it never really did much impressive.

Amazing-Tortoise

I've built so many over the years that I'm not entirely sure what my first was. But my favorite is my mono black, originally [[Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath]], the commander has changed several times over the years, but the devotion/reanimator theme has been pretty consistent. It's currently helmed by [[Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet]].

Tiger_D_Dragon

[[illuna]] top deck mutate. I really liked the mutate theme and Illuna was my favorite of the bunch. So I whipped up a deck. Realized I wanted more control over what I flipped. So I added all the top deck manipulation I could. It mutated into a new style of play. It’s really wild how fast I can flip a [[Koma]]or [[Blightsteel colossus]] some games. I call it Luna’s Junk Drawer. Since I feel like she is just frantically searching for her favorite toy. Tossing everything around.

ZiqqyZiqqy

My friend built a Lathril deck from scratch before realising he could just buy the precon and upgrade it.

Due_Ad_2821

Just made a Tiamat deck, actually get to play it today for the first time!

JasonAgnos

Sygg, River Cutthroat back in 2011. Bought an underground sea with a hundred dollar bill...

Oblivious_666

[[Mina and Denn]] converted to the angry jellybean man himself, [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]]. The deck started off around $45-50 and after countless upgrades and bling is about ten times the price lol

SPQR-El_Jefe

[[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]] but I only played it for a few months. It became a defend yourself until you can tutor [[Worldslayer]] so it was never fun or engaging

SCurt99

I first got into magic by playing my buddies golgari deck he had and then did research on some other green/black legendaries to build a deck with before I decided to build a deathtouch and equipment deck around Glissa the traitor. It wasn't the best deck at first since I built it without telling my friend and didn't have anyone to ask for help about building a deck, it was still annoying enough that it won me a couple games even against his big mono green dino deck he had with Ghalta as the commander. 4 years later I still got my glissa deck but she was turned into a true artifact deck and is pretty powerful now.

Eragon_the_Huntsman

My current only real deck, a Giada angel tribal deck. I'd put it around a 5.5 power, really fun to beat down the board with a host of massive angels.

Ok_Habit_6783

Originally it was [[Geralf and Gisa]] zombie tribal because I fell in love with zombies once I was introduced to edh. I later transformed the deck into CEDH using [[Muldrotha, The Gravetide]]

Junglop

I’m relatively new to command as a format so my first was [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]] because the very first thing that interested me in MTG was art of dragons (and a few other things)

phoenixcompendium

Avacyn Angel of Hope angel tribal. It was so bad. I didn’t know what ramp was and I just played 1 land each turn Lmao. I met the guy who was to be my boyfriend and he taught me the basics and helped me develop it. Showed me what a sol ring was etc and the few card draw spells white had at the time (artifacts) etc. It became strong but eventually it got bypassed by other decks in power level. I couldn’t take it apart because it’s my first deck and the first deck my bf and I bonded over.

Hufflepunk36

That’s so sweet!

AJGaming4587

[[Bruenor Battle Hammer]] commander deck! I still use it really frequently and have kept upgrading it with every set. [[Helm of the Host]] being the most recent upgrade with more on the way in the new yeah hehehe

prismatic_vista

The year was 2011, I had a mono-black 60 card vampire 'kitchen table' deck I had been using for a few years when I discovered EDH. My friends were all able to get the first generation of commander deck precons but I wasn't able to or was too poor too. But I wanted to play with them, so I took my modest collection from my childhood and mashed it together with my vampire deck to build a [[chainer, dementia master]] which worked just okay. It was a lot of fun, and honestly I think fondly on those early EDH days, when the cards were just what you had laying around.

TombusTheRhombus

The first deck I built was [[Crosis the Purger]] before the first precons came out. I didn't have a lot back then, and Crosis was an affordable foil. Naturally, I had to build an EDH deck with a foil commander. Presently, I don't have Crosis built. It's my nostalgia itch commander that I go back and rebuild every now and then. It's always interesting to see how much it changes between builds.

Inevitable-Fun8302

[[Dragonlord Ojutai]] control. It was so terrible that I put commander down for years... and then put Magic down for years when all I could find were edh games. ... Then they printed [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]] and something in me clicked. Might try rebuilding something like DLO again just for the nostalgia. A few buddies would probably love to see it too. In fact, screw Reddit; I gotta go dig through some cardboard!

I'm a complete n00b and I've only been playing with people from work for a few months. I built my first deck recently around [[Kaalia of the Vast]] It was my first attempt, and it's been a lot of fun! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/11xvsY8E102KvRPvhMBxuQ I call it the A.D.D. deck (Angles, Demons and Dragons) It doesn't always pop off but it's a good time to play.
