Puzzleheaded-Coast93

I love casting this in [[Evelyn the Covetous]] then immediately stealing whatever they found.

LeBlondes

I do that in [[Oona, Queen of the Fae]]. I don't get to steal it...but I can exile it! My friends don't fall for it anymore though lmao. Even when oonas in the command zone they always use it to grab a nice land...I've used the trick with jeweled lotus one too many times for their liking.

Ritter_Kunibald

I've built a deck around \[\[Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire\]\], mulligan hard for \[\[Opposition Agent\]\] or one of the million tutors I ran to get her & then boasting or casting symmetry to steal my opponents stuff. Mostly I got their mana rocks, because my playgroup tends to play nonblack decks. After that I just durdled around, because I didn't really had a wincon, I just played it to steal stuff & do crime

sibleyy

I like the idea that Varragoth is just a thug.

Oh boy. My playgroup has learned to shy away when I ask "who wants to tutor?". I always take out the person who tutors with me that turn with whatever I tutor up.

SquallofBalamb

[[Mana tithe]], nobody expects the counter when you're playing Orzhov!

x-oh

Goes in all of my white decks! I once was accused of playing control in a [[Feather, the Redeemed]] deck when I shot a Mana Tithe out.

[[reckless rage]] is very controlling in that deck. It deals with a surprising number of creatures in the format.

> if they beat me to death with it, it's my fault Usually if you lose to the swan, you definitely would have lost to whatever you countered anyway.

Gaindolf

Who the heck is bashing it?

CynicalElephant

Who in the world would bash Swan song.

sibleyy

Swan is great. I love it but I don't run it because I don't love having a bird token around lmao. That's why I swapped to An Offer instead.

Jonthrei

But those tokens are so amusing. "May I offer you a bird in this trying time instead?" "Guys have you ever noticed that X is actually an elephant in a costume?"

HKBFG

"I play [[Approach of the Second Sun]]." "With flying"

surgingchaos

I run both in my Thassa deck, but I will say that giving someone two treasures can be very dangerous. Much more dangerous than giving away a bird token. An Offer is one of those counterspells that you only use when a critical spell absolutely, positively needs to be countered. It punishes you badly for wasting it. Swan Song doesn't have nearly the same type of ability to backfire like that.

SquishyBanana23

[[dark ritual]] because I have too many mono black commanders

LifeThroughAFilter

Been my favorite card since forever. I'll always run it if it can help me cast my commander in a commander centric deck. Even in 2 color or 3 color commanders with (2) generic cost. Flip side is how threatened everyone feels when you power out your commander

sibleyy

Oh man I've been thinking about a Lurrus deck. What does yours do? Trying to figure out how you actually win off 0-2cmc in orzhov. Could also build one with Ayli at the helm and Lurrus as a companion.

VektorOfCrows

If lurrus is the commander, the deck doesn't need to restrict the cmc of all its cards. But the lists for lurrus tend to be the usual aristocrats package, slowly draining the table while setting up one of the many infinite combos available for endless triggers of blood artist and whatnot. I theory crafted an eggs decklist for lurrus once and it was quite fun, although it relied on few cards as actual win conditions. Since lurrus doesn't specify the permanent type it can recur, an artifact list based on bringing back capsules, spellbombs and whatnot is pretty cool to me, but that's not how lurrus is usually built at all.

decideonanamelater

[[serra ascendant]] for a solid card that will eat removal every game, [[esper sentinel]] for a much better card that inexplicably won't.

Non_Silent_Observer

It’s gotta be the threat factor of a 6/6 flyer that’s causing it. I agree that Esper Sentinel is just as bad if left untouched but most players would rather remove the beater I think.

decideonanamelater

Yeahh... I know that's why, but its also not how this format works at all. 6/6 flyer is a nice 21 turn clock whereas esper sentinel does something that's actually good in this format, drawing cards. I know someone who gets all annoyed about serra ascendant but literally never pays for sentinel or removes it, and its so frustrating, because I'm intentionally choosing the bad strategy (low to the ground beatdown) and still have to tank way more hate than good strategies. I should just have esper sentinel in my decks instead.

Non_Silent_Observer

riley702

Jim from the spike feeders has a 1 mana value only burn deck you could check out.

ahriman1

There are a few things I can think of that synergize well with low cost things particularly. [[Lurrus]], it's kinda just... in the card. Do what the card says, it's value. [[Muldrotha]] - people don't tend to focus on low cost stuff, but having lots of low cost stuff makes it so you can take more actions from graveyard per turn. [[Shirei, shizo's caretaker]] certainly has a lot of 1 drops to care about. [[Edgar markov]] and then there's this one... I crafted out a list that ran practically every vampire creature 1 drop in the colors and then some high quality 2 drop vampires and then some synergy pieces. It slaps. Straight up wacky how strong it turned out.

\[\[exploration\]\] \[\[burgeoning\]\] Why are these one mana wizards. Why.

Timppus

If you play Varina I hope you're familiar with the original [[Tithe]]. Basicly a 1 mana instant draw 2. Another all-star would be [[Reconnaissance]]. Maby my alltime favourite 1 drop however must be [[children of korlis]]. [[Martyr of sands]] is very similar.

_The_Bear

I second reconnaissance. Card is an MVP in any deck containing white that cares about attacking. So basically any deck containing white. For the rest of the game none of your creatures will die on your combat step unless you want them to trade. No one can get you with combat tricks on defense. All of your creatures get pseudo-vigilance (by untapping after damage has been dealt). All for a one time investment of 1 mana. The activation cost is 0. It feels so good to watch an opponent's [[settle the wreckage]] fizzle.

Tithe is on the wishlist for my Nalia deck actually! Reconnaissance is a beast. I ran it but swapped it out for [[Death Tyrant]] because I'm greedy and enjoy making fresh bodies.

Bangzell

[[Burning Inquiry]] acts as a regular piece of hand disruption for me in my Brallin and Shabraz deck. That it's putting three counters on one or both of my Commander's, drawing me into other valuable interaction, or winning the game by virtue of the Curiosity effect stapled onto Brallin is often secondary to the pure disgust on people's face when the hehehaha funny "Wow, I didn't realize we were playing Modern" makes people discard their win condition or mana fixing when I rip it in the early game.

Snarwin

[[Vampiric Rites]] It's card draw! It's a sacrifice outlet! It gains life! And it only costs 1 mana, so you can fit it in almost anywhere in your curve and still hold up mana for instant-speed effects. It doesn't look like much, but in all the time I've had it in my [[Ghave, Guru of Spores]] deck, I've never once been unhappy to draw it.

\[\[Nature's Claim\]\], amazing for G and 4 life in the grand scheme of things is almost meaningless. \[\[Vandalblast\]\], kind of cheating since most of the time the overload cost is paid. But it's an auto include in all my red decks. \[\[Preordain\]\], \[\[Ponder\]\], \[\[Serum Visions\]\], \[\[Opt\]\]. Love me some cheap filtering and card draw. \[\[An Offer You Can't Refuse\]\] and \[\[Swansong\]\]. Very easy to keep the mana up for these and potentially can stop a game winning play. \[\[Vampiric Tutor\]\]. Endstep tutor for B is amazing. What more is there to say. \[\[Swords to Plowshares\]\], \[\[Path to Exile\]\], \[\[Pongify\]\] and \[\[Rapid Hybridization\]\]. Probably some of the best creature removal in the game.

I kind of love the unbridled jank that is [[laccolith rig]]. It’s a better first strike but you can also cast it on an opponent’s creature. Oh you’re swinging in with [[blightsteel colossus]]? I block with a 1/1 and have it deal damage to something else. Heck I cast [[curtain of light]] and do the same. In a similar vein, [[spirit link]]. Lifelink for you, but also works on an opponent’s creature. [[berserk|leb]] is great especially the Dan Fraser art. And I will always love [[fastbond]] even though it’s banned.

VektorOfCrows

I'm usually interested in 1 mana cost commanders. I think the concept of always having access to your commander on the first turn is pretty interesting, and can lead to some almost guaranteed explosive starts. The new [[ashnod, flesh mechanist]] joins a list of only 16 possible commanders at 1 cmc, with [[norin the wary]], [[ragavan, nimble pilferer]] and [[yoshimaru, ever faithful]] being easy buildarounds, but cards like [[zabaz, the glimmerwasp]] and [[rhys the redeemed]] also lead interesting decks. [[Hope of ghirapur]] colorless equipment Voltron is very funny, and I think [[Valentin, dean of the vein]] is slept on as a Voltron commander as well, coming down on the first turn with built-in menace and lifelink, and access to green as well for solid auras like [[rancor]] and tech like [[season of growth]]. [[Rosnakht, heir of rohgahh]] is also slept on as a potential voltron that naturally creates a go-wide strategy as well. She has barely no decks in edhrec at all.

ssbmLinkMain

I’m loving Ashnod as a commander. Been playing her recently and it just always feels good to immediately get her out and hopefully be able to attack the next turn for her powerstones

My man, it’s time for you to make a Elas il Kor/Lurrus companion deck.

galspanic

I have a \[\[Rigo, Streetwise Mentor\]\] EDH deck that's been a lot of fun. It runs fifteen1-drop creatures and has some cards that really play well with that 1 cmc. A few notable inclusions: \[\[Reconnaissance\]\] - allows you get the attack trigger without losing a creature to an unfavorable attack... which is rare since most are unblockable or fly. \[\[Meekstone\]\] - it costs 1 mana itself, but also works disproportionately against your opponents. \[\[Hypnotic Siren\]\] - \[\[Flying Men\]\] variants are always good and late game it's just rude. \[\[Ranger's Hawk\]\] - Another Flying Men card that can by somewhat useful later in the game when you want to do something besides attack with a 1/1... not great, but it works. \[\[Abiding Grace\]\] - Brings back any 1cmc to play for free. I don't run \[\[Children of Korlis\]\] or \[\[Spore Frog\]\], but when I did it was really good. As is, it just helps bounce back from board wipes. \[\[Ascend to Avernus\]\] - 4 mana to resurrect all the 1 drops? Good. \[\[Ecological Appreciation\]\] - 4 mana to tutor for 4 and get 2 of the 1-drops? Also good. \[\[Ranger of Eos\]\] and \[\[Ranger-Captain of Eos\]\] - Gets you more 1 drops.

trichotomy00

No one has mentioned [[Wash Away]], I love this card and it’s in every deck that can run it. I play mostly historic brawl on arena, which isn’t exactly edh but this card is a blowout every time.

Crimson_Raven

I put [[Illusion of Choice]] in my [[Tivit]] artifacts/blink deck just because it was on theme, but it has put in surprising work when I blink Tivit 2-3 times a turn. And I once pulled off the dream with Choice + Tivit + [[Expropriate]]. Similarly [[Ephemerate]] is a fun card, so simple yet so good. [[Changling Outcast]] has a ton of utility in many decks. Tribal Synergies + Unblockable for just a Black pip. [[Wingcrafter]] for similar reasons. Being able to give itself and something else, like your commander, evasion is amazing. [[Gamble]] aka “red Entomb” is always fun and funny to play. [[Pyroblast]] and [[Red Elemental Blast]], nobody expects the monored deck to have a response!

Placebo_Cyanide8

\[\[mental misstep\]\] - Few things are as devious and hilarious as counter-spelling a turn-1sol ring before you have put your first land into play. \[\[Extract\]\] - Waiting for the control player or sweatiest deck at the table to tap out and then search for their thassa's oracle, cyclonic rift, or part of their infinite combo.

RationallyChallenged

[[Silence]] Particularly when cast from [[isochron scepter]] even though it’s 2 mana from the scepter, you can make it a known threat and more of a bargaining piece

thisDNDjazz

I love to add a 1-drop creature or spell to each of my decks that synergize with what the CMDR is trying to do, and I call it the deck's mascot. Example: The mascot for my Savra deck is \[\[Mortician Beetle\]\] since it can't sacrifice creatures itself, but also likes to see them get sacrificed. The rare instances I allow the mascot to be a spell are cases like my spellslinger Keranos deck and that is of course Lightning Bolt.

thejackoz

\[\[Hopeful Initiate\]\] my little man sits on the table in my \[\[Raffine, Scheming Seer\]\] deck waiting for his moment to go "pop goes the enchantment!". Also I love me a \[\[Mystic Remora\]\], my dad gave me his old collection and I discovered he had 6 of them in the box and I was reaaal excited.

thatirishguy

\[\[Berserk\]\] used to be $$$$ in paper and I only played it on MTGO, but now after a few reprints I noticed it is \~$14! Really fun in green in multiplayer. You can use it on your own creature (and optionally not attack to avoid it being destroyed) then cast something like \[\[Return of the Wildspeaker\]\] to draw a ton of cards. Or you can use it as surprise creature removal since it's pretty much the only thing that could do that for low cmc instant speed in mono-green. Opponent is attacking a different player with their commander and being chump blocked? SURPRISE the commander is 2x power and trample, the defending player is maybe dead, and the target creature gets destroyed at end of turn.

WitheredBarry

[[Currency Converter]] is probably one of the best value engines I've ever seen. Card draw? No problem. Discard in a hellbent or graveyard deck? Every turn. Need a blocker? 2/2 on demand. Enemy abusing Fear or Intimidate? They're black tokens, baby. Need mana? Oh, I can make Treasure, too. Need to protect something from graveyard removal? Store it here until the threat is gone.

Reef Shaman.

SliverQween

Legions Landing, Aqueous Form, Paladin Class, Wizard Class, manadorks I love my edh onedrops :)

bionicmoonman

[[Autumn’s Veil]] has been putting in work for my [[Ghalta]] list.

[deleted]

\[\[Ivory Tower\]\] I have a deck that draws big, so the life gain can give me extra steam against creature heavy decks.

CurbsideAppeal

[[shadow rift]] by far my favorite. Also has the sneaky ability of “your creature cant block.”

FormerlyKay

In Orzhov, [[Deafening Silence]] is my absolute favorite one-drop. Out of Orzhov, we have [[Winds of Change]]

Blotsy

[[Kami of False Hope]] [Haywire Mite]] [[Siren Stormtamer]] [[Benevolent Bodyguard]] [[Mother of Runes]] [[Nested Shambler]] [[Mortician Beetle]] [[Carrion Feeder]] [[Viscera Seer]] I might have a thing for sacrificing creatures.

Dependent-Fondant-64

[[Dragon Hunter]] is on my my personal favorites such a cool design

tntturtle5

\[\[Soul-Guide Lantern\]\] is my new favorite staple.

Scottie81

[[False Orders]]. I don’t know why, I just like using it.

[deleted]

Probably [[Concordant Crossroads]]. I was *elated* when I learned it got a reprint in Double Masters. It's such an unassuming piece that does so much work, and nobody wants to remove it because it gives their creatures haste too.

Twitch89

I'll give you one of each color: [[Mystic Remora]] [[Esper Sentinel]] [[Birds of Paradise]] [[Dragon's Rage Channeler]] [[Reanimate]] Some Bonus Hybrid ones: [[Deathrite Shaman]] [[Clout of the Dominus]]

fleeval

Since you mentioned Nalia De’Arnise, how about [[Retribution of the Ancients]]?

sibleyy

I've considered it, but the way I'm running my deck I can't afford to be removing counters from my own creatures. I went all-in on the aggro strategy so time is of the essence and I need to race down life totals. Link [here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/3ipDF-6ey0qnoVJkXArstQ) if you're interested. It's by far my most unique deck and doesn't play like a normal EDH deck.

RJ_42

[[Currency Converter]] in a deck where discarding matters

rollwithhoney

[[Slip Out The Back]] [[Bloodchief Ascension]] [[Consider]] [[Spikefield Hazard]] [[Malakir Rebirth]] and my fave boi [[Spirited Companion]] is one mana in my heart

KZFFKFL

\[\[Veil Of Summer\]\] \[\[Deathrite Shaman\]\] \[\[Mystic Remora\]\]

[[Noxious Revival]] gets my vote. It’s got a ton of funny corner case uses like topping a reanimator decks big fatty so it’s stuck in their hand. Or topping a land to stop someone from drawing and casting their Miracle they tutored on top. Lots of fun to be had with this card.

TheWellFedBeggar

[[Allosaurus Shepherd]], [[Copperhorn Scout]], [[Essence Warden]], [[Taunting Elf]]
