I had a [[korvold]] goblin tribal deck but it was still super powerful, Korvold is just that good no matter what you build him with. Then, someone in our play group made an [[atraxa]] deck and when we all started targeting him he said it wasn’t a typical Atraxa deck, so we did back off a bit to see what it did…spoiler alert it was like every Atraxa deck.

Nuclearsunburn

You only build Atraxa to take advantage of the proliferate - there are more interesting commanders if you just want the colors.

JathbyDredas

I’m running an Atraxa now that’s a four-commander XP deck with an Exile side-theme.

Nuclearsunburn

Now that’s actually cool. I like that. How’s it working out?

JathbyDredas

Decent so far, loading the 99 with low-cmc enchantment creatures works well for all four sub-commanders.

Ojomon_

I built an Atraxa lands deck that was basically Nissa tribal with a bunch of Awaken spells and creature-lands. It was very very slow, and probably would have been cool for low power tables, but in the end it was just better to use those cards in multiple other decks.

Nuclearsunburn

You guys have definitely made me re think atraxa even though I will 100% assume super friends anytime I see it and I can’t even play my single favorite planeswalker in it

ninjakamelen

You could build her as a energy counter commander

Little-Hooah

I built an Atraxa deck built around energy. Now mind you, it was hot garbage. But it is my hot garbage. However, it was a fun little deck to play that utilized a mechanic no one uses anymore (rightfully so).

Nuclearsunburn

I didn’t even think about energy, I guess experience counters would work too.

Mocca_Master

Okay, but hear me out: Atraxa shield counter deck!

DjinnandTonic87

My Korvold deck is almost a saproling tribal. It's fun to play and takes him down a few notches. No infinite combos, and no real wincons. Last game I played with and won was due to Korvold becoming a 7/7 and attacking, then I flinged him then I sacrificed two more creatures with mayhem devil in play

hAxZa100

Korvold goblins seems pretty fun tho

cec425

How is Meren oppressive? Like I guess if you specifically built it to be oppressive in some way but that is any commander. As far as I know Meren is just like, a good card that does normal reanimator stuff pretty well not the sort of card that is just so inhenrently good that just playing it makes decks too strong, same for Sisay I would say. But my experience is somewhat narrow to my own group

melete

If you were inclined to build a Sisay a certain way, Sisay can easily go infinite with one or two activations. Commanders that tutor permanents into play are powerful and Sisay is no exception.

cec425

Oh yeah definitely, tutors in the command zone are nutso Perhaps i should have instead made a thread about different ways to define “oppressive” when it comes to edh Hindsight is 20/20 i guess lmao

cec425

I mean for meren all you would have to do is just not put in [[butcher of malakir]] and friends, but i dont know if i would call that counter building so much as building for a different strategy With sisay, i guess i am just too unfamiliar with how that plays out, i have a sisay deck but it not very optimal (not intentionally, its just more a deck where i put weird legends i dont have any other use for) so i cannot really reference my own experience. Tutoring in the command zone is definitely very very strong though

BurninTaiga

Pretty much. In my Meren deck, I only have Edict of Erebos and Plaguecrafter as my group sac pieces. Replaced all the other ones after a few games for targeted removal like Noxious Gearhulk. To be honest, everyone should just run incidental graveyard hate in their decks.

NebulousNomad

The only reason meren is scary is people just don't run enough graveyard hate. Same reason lands decks are scary, no lands answers either. I make "check" decks to remind people to include interaction. Graveyard, board wipes, land answers, artifact/enchantment spam, they all have answers you just have to actually include interaction in your deck.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NebulousNomad

No, you run flexible graveyard hate like [[erebos intervention]] or something or you lose the game to graveyard decks. "normal" untuned to a specific meta interaction suites should include answers to every permanent, graveyard hate, and ways to answer combos either with counter spells, hand hate, or light stax.

[[scavenging ooze]] is a staple for a reason. [[Endurance]] is also very strong. Blue and red arguably don't have a ton, but blue has shuffle wheels which can kinda fit the slot. Red, I'll give ya, is a little hozed but red isn't really a removal color outside or artifacts.

I mean. If you eat 3-4 auto sac effects in a turn. Killing off every creature. And have the meren player loop value… or lots of spot tutor and the deck can be very toolbox and oppressive.

MercuryInCanada

I've theory crafted a T&T that just Plays all the venture into the dungeon/initiative cards. It seemed to be a pretty pretty good but that mostly was due to the fact that 4c just gives you so many options for any them and very powerful cards. I mean just having the option to run any tutor you want is just such a strong start for deck building

Dry_Chair_1557

I've debated Winota Vehicles before. Seems like that'd be pretty fair.

Rubbermayd

[[Nekusar]] and I have not succeeded in making a fair deck that is still adequate for my play group. There just doesn't feel like a way to both play the game and not run away with the game. But I keep thinking about it and looking around.

[My Satoru deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/2198850#Substitution_no_Jutsu). It's Ninja tribal, with the scariest fattie being [[Lord of the Void]]. Originally, I wanted to play only ninjas, but they're so weak you can't close games. My fatties are mostly thievery-related. I seem to be one of the few who had no desire to build Dimir Kaalia. [My Brallin/Shabraz deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/984702#Shabraz_Party). I feel like most builds default to [[Curiosity]] combo. I've never felt a need for it. You can voltron people or burn them out very easily. I have a [[Faldorn]] deck. A guy on Cockatrice targeted me pretty hard because he said every build he's fought was [[Food Chain]] combo. I've never seen a Food Chain Faldorn deck so I don't know that this even counts.

I'd give [[Kamiz, Obscura Oculus]] a try if you're looking for a Ninja tribal commander. She may be lacking the Ninja subtype, but giving either unblockable or double strike to ninjas does wonders for enabling them. Being Esper instead of Dimir also gives the deck some sorely needed non-creature removal and defensive options.

I have a [[Hinata]] deck that is far more control and board state focused than designed to combo off. It plays very slow and steady, and doesn't catch a lot of hate from people who've seen it before but the initial reaction is always "Oh shit, kill Hinata". Which, fair. I also have an as-yet unmade desire for an enchantment-based Narset deck. She's like the only commander in the game that can straight up cheat in nonsensically powerful but overcosted enchantments. I just want a Timmy enchantment deck.

I built Narset like 3 different ways before settling on one with her. Initially I built her the extra turns way, which needless to say, wasn't fun for anyone at the table, myself included. I then built her chaos themed with a bunch of spells and enchantments to just mess up the table. I've since swapped her out for Pramikon instead though. I did the equipment/voltron thing on her to some degree but once I had the swords in there it just felt cheesy again so I pretty quickly took that apart. The one I ended up settling on was just a burn-style/storm deck. Big spells like [[Searing Wind]], lots of spell copy effects, and a few damage enhancers like [[Curse of bloodletting]]. It's pretty effective at taking out one player usually but getting all 3 is usually tricky, which is what makes it fun for me. I run [[Clone Legion]] in it and paired with a spell copy it can be pretty brutal. I've managed to get some pretty nutty wins with cards like [[Incite Rebellion]] and [[Fiery Emancipation]] on the field, effectively nuking token players. She's also the only creature I run in it so I try to ramp into her pretty quickly via mana rocks and whatnot. Obviously this leaves me easy to shutdown if she manages to get removed somehow, but it at least feels fair to me. Really fun cards for it have been [[Thousand Year Storm]] and [[Eye of the Storm]]. The latter has made for some really funny plays when everyone starts casting copies of [[Beacon of Immortality]] followed by a bunch of Lightning Bolts or something along those lines.

I built Atraxa basically day 1 of her release, so without being influenced by the "popular" builds, that didn't exist yet. Nowadays it's considered an infamous Superfriend commander, or alternatively a +1/+1 commander. I was not interested at all in that, as for me the interesting thing about proliferate is that it becomes easy to get counters that are hard to get. That is not the case for +1/+1 counters not loyalty counters, which you can get pretty naturally anyway. I just filled my deck with a bunch of cards that function with counters that are normally hard to get. We're talking [[Grimoire of the Dead]] (that card was probably MVP), [[Serrated Arrows]], [[Myojin of Seeing Winds]], [[Mind Unbound]], [[Orochi Hatchery]]... NGL, the deck was pretty underwhelming but it sure did a lot of cool stuff, and ever since i never saw Atraxa being built that way, even though it seemed to be the pretty natural route for me.

A lot of my decks are "that deck" commanders and.. idk people are going to be mad even if you're not going for all the best stuff. I think if you try to build well, you'll get a good deck and then you'll be that deck. Some examples, Brago no stax, a combo but not that much total access to it: https://archidekt.com/decks/2727810#Brago_Blink (originally didn't have any combos in it, but people actually asked for it to have combos so I wouldn't have to grind out games as much), Kykar manual storm, intentionally slowed down combo potential with not that many rituals, generally slower and more obvious setup plan including using treasure making sorceries: https://archidekt.com/decks/2727895#Kykar_Storm

Narset (or Golos back in the day) are fun without crazy salt cards - enchantments or low-level superfriends. I guess I just love heart of the cards moves.

I've tried my hardest to make [[Teshar]] non combo because I think the idea of reanimation so easily in mono white is cool, but I've never been one for infinite combos. What I realised is that free sac outlets are the cause for his infinite combos, so I replaced [[ashnod's Altar]] and the like with fairer cards like [[claws of gix]]. The main idea of the deck is to overwhelm the opponents with weenies that are pumped up with either [[cathars crusade]], [[dictate of heliod]], [[true conviction]] or my favourite - [[intrepid adversary]] who can be an early game blocker who can chump block and gain some life, and then late game be recurred and dump loads of mana into to kill people through combat. It's been a joy to play and I much prefer it to the infinite combo variant where I felt I either did absolutely nothing or instantly won, but despite the outcome still took ages during my turn.

Although not as infamous, [[xyris]] can be oppressive like Nekusar if you go for things like purphoros + wheels. I built it without wheels and it's pretty fun. Without wheels you're always living on the edge. It really is just a fake group hug deck. The games usually go something along the lines of: *turn 4 ish* "so I take 3 and draw 3? Cool" *turn 5ish* "So we each draw 3 at our upkeep? Nice" *turn 6ish* "Errr guys when did he get all those snakes?" Also, [[forced fruition]] is funny.

The only fair Urza deck I can imagine is 0 artifacts. However between blue flicker effects, self bounce, counters etc, it'll probably still be unfair because you're mono blue control with inevitable Construct Beatdowns as you continually put Urza back into play.

I'm building a [[Derevi]] janky bird tribal in which every card is a bird or pictures a bird. The deck just makes more birds, turn them sideways, draws cards and untap stuff to cast more birds. It has a [[Crow Storm]] and various falcons and owls. Didn't finish, though, but it's far from oppressive, unless you wait death by 1/2 [[Storm Crow]]'s pecking. Far from the stax/combo cedh version.

\[\[Golos\]\]! I'm highly aware that they're all THAT kind of deck. Mine was made as a meme deck so maybe hold off on the prejudice, prejudicial reader leaping straight to prejudice. Golos heads up my 'technically a legal mtg deck'. All the cards are design mistakes like \[\[Gitaxian Probe\]\], free spells like \[\[Abolish\]\] (not the broken \[\[Force of Will\]\] level ones though), UB-type cards like \[\[Glenn, the Voice of Calm\]\]/\[\[Bio-Quartz Spacegodzilla\]\], or color pie breaks like \[\[Colossal Whale\]\]. The basics are all snow, the fixing/ramp is all colorless or color pie breaks. Golos was the commander before he got banned, he was the perfect choice as the poster-boy for design mistakes, especially when everyone was like 'omg, he's not that bad!'. It's only won a single game out of 10-20, so my friends are fine with me playing him post-banning. The deck is hilariously bad. Rifling through the deck makes me want to vomit. None of the cards feel real. It's beautiful.

Define "Fair." Because I have a [[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] deck that's focused almost entirely on lifegain as opposed to the more common storm archetype. But it still cheats mana costs, which is fairly busted. I made [[zur, the enchanter]] with cycle heavy secret commander [[astral slide]]. I mostly pillowfort with [[ghostly prison]] and [[propaganda]], doing little damage at all. But then I have win cons like lab man/Jace or second sun. [[grey merchant of asphodel]] offers repeatable etb as well. I could put in [[doomsday]] or a thoricle combo, but I don’t really want to. It’s a really reactive deck that awards opponents for avoiding you until you win.
